قيم سوى قسما بالنجم حني هوى ما المعاف والسI swear by the star when it falls
The well-one is not equal to the ill-one
فاخلع الكونني عنك سوى حب مول العرب والعجمSo remove the two worlds from you with the exception of

2 O Imam of the Messengers
قمر طابت سـريرتـه وسجاياه وسيـرتـهA moon, his soul has matured
his natural disposition, and his comportment
صفوة الباري وخريتـه عدل أهل الحل والحرمThe choicest of the creator and His best
The most just of the people outside the sanctuary and within it
ما رأت عني وليس ترى مثل طه يف الورى برشاNo eye has ever seen nor does it see
a human like Taha in all of mankind
يم ى أثرا طاهر األخالق والش خري من فوق الثThe best one above the earth, a sign [of Allah]
Possessor of the purest of character and behaviors
3Casting Off
طاب يل خلع عذاري يف ھوى البدر التممCasting off restraint has become pleasant to me
On the account of love for the perfect full moon
بافتقاري وانكساري أرتجي نیل املرامWith my utter need and state of brokenness
I hope to attain my wish
یا عذويل ال تلمني ما عىل العاشق مالمO my censurer, do not blame me
For there can be no blame on the passionate lover
أدن مني واروعني أنا يف العشق إمامDraw near to me and relate this from me
“In passionate love I am the Imam”

4 The Goblets of Ardent Desire
دارت كؤوس الغرام ما بین املوايل The goblets of ardent desire passed around
Among masters
فزادتهم اصطالم حاالا عىل حالIncreasing them in annihilation
Spiritual state upon spiritual state
قلت لهم یا كرام هل ترضوا بحايلI said to them “O noble ones,
Are you pleased with my state?”
فقالوا يل یا غالم إذا كنت خايلThey replied “O young man,
(Only) if you are empty”
إين كثیراآلمال ضعیف األعملIndeed, I have many hopes
But am deficient in performing deeds
بالنسبة لكم عدم فرقوا لحايلIn relation to you, I am nothing
So be tender to my state
دارت كؤوس الغرامThe Goblets of Ardent Desire
5The Vision Was Clear
صفت النظرة طابت الحضة جاءت البرشى ألهل اللهThe vision was clear, the presence was sweet
The good news came for (O Dear Friend) the folk of Allah
قاموا سكارى لذي البشارہ جعلوا غمرة شكراا للهThey arose drunken for these glad tidings,
And held a hadrah in thanks for Allah
أيها الحاض أذكر وذاكر إياك تنكر حال أهل اللهYou who attend re-member and remind,
Don’t deny states of the fold of Allah
فسلم لهم فيم عراهم واعلم أنهم غابوا يف اللهAcknowledge the states taking grip of them,
And know they rose for the sake of Allah.
فالوجد بهم داعي يدعيهم يطرا عليهم يف ذكر اللهTheir ecstasy is a caller calling,
It seizes them when remembering Allah
ومن لم يجد فليتواجد قصداا يتعرض لفضل اللهYou who do not see, strive for ecstasy,
Expose yourself to the grace of Allah

6 The Vision Was Clear
هكذا قالوا ولذا مالوا ولقد غالوا يف ذكر اللهThis is what they said and for this they swayed
And went too far in remembering Allah
حتى قد ظنا من ليس منا أنا جننا بذكر اللهUntil it was thought, by those not of us
We went insane from invoking Allah
هنيئاا لنا ثم برشانا إن كان لنا حمق يف اللهWell done for us then and glad tiding if
We became crazed through remembering Allah
7My Lord’s Knowledge Has Sufficed Me
قد كفاين علم ريب من سؤايل واختياريMy Lords knowledge has sufficed me
from asking or choosing
فدعائ وابتهايل شاھد يل بافتقاريFor my dua and my agonizing supplication
is a witness to my poverty.
أدعو يف يساري وعساري فلهذا السFor this secret I make supplication
in times of ease and times of difficulty
أنا عبد صار فخري ضمن فقري واضطراريI am a slave whose pride
is in his poverty and obligation
يا إلهي ومليك أنت تعلم كيف حايلO my Lord and my King
You know my state
وبا قد حل قلبي من ھموم واشتغايلAnd what has settled in my heart
of anxieties and preoccupations
قد كفاين علم ريبMy Lord’s Knowledge Has Sufficed Me
8 My Lord’s Knowledge Has Sufficed Me
فتداركني بلطف منك يا مول الموايلSave me with a gentleness
from You, O Lord of Lords
يا كريم الوجه غثني قبل أن يفنى اصطباريOh save me, Most Generous
before I run out of patience
ا يعا يع الغوث غوثاا منك يدركنا رس يا رسO One who is swift in sending aid
I ask for aid that will arrive to me swiftly
ا يهزم العس ويأت بالذي نرجو جميعاIt will defeat all difficulty
and it will bring all that we hope for
ا يا قريباا يا مجيباا يا عليما يا سميعاO Near One Who answers
O All-Knowing O All-Hearing
قت بعجزي وخضوعي وانكساري قد تحقI have attained realization through my incapacity,
my submission and my brokenness
لم أزل بالباب واقف فارحمن ريب وقويفI am still standing by the door,
so please my Lord have mercy on my standing
9My Lord’s Knowledge Has Sufficed Me
وبوادي الفضل عاكف فأدم ريب عكويفAnd in the valley of generosity, I am in itikaf (solitary retreat)
So, Allah, make my retreat here permanent
ولحسن الظن الزم فهو خل وحليفيAnd Im abiding by good opinion (of You)
For it is my friend and ally
وأنيس وجليس طول ليل ونهاريAnd it is the one that sits by me and keeps me company
All of my day and my night
حاجةا يف النفس يا رب فاقضها يا خري قاضThere is a need in my soul, O Allah
so please fulfill it, O Best of Fulfillers
واظ وأرح رسي وقلبي من لظاھا والشAnd comfort my secret and my heart
from its burning and its shrapnel
فالهنا والبسط حايل وشعاري ودثاريFor joy and expansion is my state
and my motto and my cover
10 Glad Tidings
برشى لنا نلنا املنى زال العنا واف الهنا
هر أنجز وعدہ والبرش أضحى معلنا والدGlad tidings for us, we have attained our highest wish
Troubles have ceased, and well-being has come
Destiny has delivered what was promised,
And joy has become manifest everywhere
يا نفس طيبي باللقا يا عني قري أعينا
هذا جمل املصطفى أنوارہ الحت لناO Soul, enjoy the pleasure in the meeting
O eye, feel comfort
This is beauty of the Chosen one
His Light shines over us
يا طيبة ما ذا نقول وفيك قد حل الرسول
د نبينا وكلنا يرجو الوصول ملحمO blessed earth what can we say
when the Messenger in you rests
And we all wish to arrive
At Muhammad, our Prophet
برشى لناGlad Tidings
11Glad Tidings
فيع وصاحبيه والبقيع يا روضة الهادي الش
اكتب لنا نحن الجميع زيارةا لنبيناOh garden (Rawda) of the Guide and Advocate
And his two companions and Al-Baqi
O Lord ordain for us all
That we may visit our Prophet
حيث األماين روضها قد ظل حلو املجتنى
وبالحبيب املصطفى صفا وطاب عيشناAfter satisfying the longing
Remains the sweetness of what was harvested
Thanks to the Beloved and Chosen One
Our lives become good and pure
صل وسلم يا سالم عىل النبي بدر التمم
حب الكرام صىل عليهم ربنا واآلل والصSend blessings and peace, O Lord of Peace
Upon the Prophet, the full moon of perfection
And his noble Family and Companions
Send blessings over them, O our Lord
12 How Long Will My Heart Ache
طالم أشكو غرامي يا نور الوجودHow long will my heart ache for my Beloved, O you light of the universe.
و أنادي يا تهامي يا معدن الجودAnd call out to you, O Tihami O you treasure of goodness
هود منيتي أقص مرامي أحظى بالشMy utmost wish and desire is that I may attain to the vision
لم يا زاك الجدود و أرى باب السAnd see the door of Paradise, O your purifier of efforts!
يكفي يا نور األهلة إن هجري طالO light of existence O Allah, My abandonment lengthened
ي والعمر ول جد بالوصل جود سيدO my Master, Time has passed so be good with good
طاملا أشكو غراميHow Long Will My Heart Ache
13There is no god but Allah
ال إله إال الله ال إله إال الله
د رسول الله عليه صالة الله محمThere is no God except Allah, There is no God except Allah,
Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, Allah's Blessing upon him.
بها يثبت اإلميان بها يحصل األمان
ر أيها اإلنسان ال إله إال الله كرWith it Faith is confirmed, with it security is obtained,
repeat it often whomsoever you are, there is no God except Allah.
تكرارها ما أحالہ ما أبهاه ما أعالہ
تدين العبد من موالہ ال إله إال اللهHow sweet is its repetition, how very nice, how exalted,
it brings the servant close to his Lord, there is no God except Allah.
قد أتانا يف األخبار عن النبي املختار
أن أفضل األذكار ال إله إال اللهIt has come to us in the Prophetic tradition, on the authority of the chosen Messenger,
that the very best invocation, [is] there is no God except Allah.
جمعت معنى التوحيد ودلت بال مزيد
ر أيها املريد ال إله إال الله كرIt combines all of the meanings [and implications] of Divine Unity, indicating those meanings without any
need for commentary or clarification, repeat it often O seeker of Allah, there is no God except Allah.
ال إله إال اللهThere is no god but Allah
14 There is no god but Allah
ذاكرها ال يشقى الينال فرقا
هي العروة الوثقى ال إله إال اللهOne who repeats it often will never be saddened, nor will he experience any fear,
it is the most reliable grip, there is no God except Allah.
هي حصـنك الحصني هي درعك المتني
ذكر رب العالمني ال إله إال اللهIt is your buttressed fortress, it is your firm armor,
remembering the Lord of the Worlds, there is no God except Allah.
بها الفوز والنجاة فيها كل البكات
تنجي من كل اآلفات ال إله إال اللهWith it comes victory and salvation, through it comes every Blessing,
it saves one from every ruination, there is no God except Allah.
يئات بها تنمو الحسنات بها تحى الس
بها تنال الخريات ال إله إال اللهWith it every misdeed is eradicated, it causes all good deeds to proliferate,
with it all manifestations of goodness are obtained, there is no God except Allah.
عف قوى قم دوا فيها للض فيها للس
هي كلمة التقوى ال إله إال اللهIt is a cure for disease, it is a source of strength for every weakness,
it epitomizes God-consciousness, there is no God except Allah.
دور هي نور عىل نور هي شفاء الص
ذكر ربك الغفور ال إله إال اللهIt is the cure for [diseased] hearts, it is light upon light,
invoking your All Forgiving Lord, there is no God except Allah.
15There is no god but Allah
هي النعمة العظمى هي المقام األسمى
ليس تبقي ألم ال إله إال اللهIt is the greatness blessing, it is the most sublime station, it leaves no pain in its wake, there is no God except Allah.
هي شفاء العلل فيها إصالح الخلل
فاذكر ال تخش الملل ال إله إال اللهIt cures all maladies, it rectifies all defects,
mention it without fear of ever being bored, there is no God except Allah.
روا بها الجنان الزموها يا إخوان نو
إن مفتاح الجنان ال إله إال اللهAdhere to it O Brethren, illuminate your hearts with it,
surely the key to paradise, [is] there is no God except Allah.
الزموها باألسحار والعش واإلبكار
تستمدوا من أنوار ال إله إال اللهAdhere to it in the last reaches of the night, in the evening and the early morning,
derive [unlimited strength] from the illuminating lights, [of] there is no God except Allah.
نوب صوا بها الذ روا بها القلوب مح نو
إن أعظم املطلوب ال إله إال اللهIlluminate your hearts with it, eradicated your sins with it,
surely the greatest objective, [is] there is no God except Allah.
نيا ويف األخرى هي الرحمة الكبى يف الد
أعىل األذكار أجرا ال إله إال اللهIt is the greatest mercy, in this World and in the Hereafter,
it is the most abundantly rewarded invocation, there is no God except Allah.
16 There is no god but Allah
ال تغفل عنها وال تتك تنـزيه المول
إن املثل األعىل ال إله إال اللهNever neglect it, and never leave the exaltation of the Lord, it is the unapproachable ideal, there is no God except Allah.
حافظوا عىل األوقات داوموا عىل الطاعات
تنجيكم من اآلفات ال إله إال اللهUse your time judiciously, be consistent in your Obedience [of Allah],
it will save you from every ruination, there is no God except Allah.
يقارنها اإلقرار برسالة المختار
من حبانا من أنوار ال إله إال اللهJoin to it the affirmation of the Message of the Chosen [Prophet],
the one who has given us from the lights, [of] there is no God except Allah.
خري الخلق عند الله صاحب العز والجاه
د رسول الله خاتم رسل اإلله محمThe best of all creation with Allah, the possessor of glory and prestige,
the seal of the Messengers of Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.

د أرشف األعراب والعجم محم
د خري من ميش عىل قدم محمMuhammad is the noblest of Arabs and non-Arabs
Muhammad is the best of those who walk upon feet
د باسط المعروف جامعه محم
ـد صاحب اإلحسان والكرم محمMuhammad is a spreader of good and its gatherer
Muhammad is a possessor of beneficence and generosity
د تاج رسل الله قاطبةا محم
د صادق األقوال والكلم محمMuhammad is exclusively the crown of all Allah’s messengers
Muhammad is true in speech and sayings
د ثابت الميثاق حافظه محم
يم د طيب األخالق والش محمMuhammad is an upholder and protector of covenants
Muhammad is of pleasant character and disposition

Muhammads continues to be light from the beginning of time

د معدن اإلنعام والحكم محمMuhammad is an upright judge, possessing honour
Muhammad is the source of benefaction and wisdom
د خري خلق الله من مضـر محم
د خري رسـل الله كلهـم محمMuhammad is the best of Allah’s creation, from Mudar
Muhammad is the best of all Allah’s messengers
د دينه حق ندين به محم
د مجمالا حقاا عىل علم محمMuhammad’s religion is true, we profess and adhere to it
Muhammad is moderate and decent, befitting of a noble

د ذكرہ روح ألنفسنا محم
د شكرہ فرض عىل األمم محمMuhammad’s remembrance is a respite for our souls
Muhammad, showing him gratitude is obligatory upon all the nations

ت والظلم د كاشف الغم محمMuhammad is the beauty and adornment of this world
Muhammad is a remover of afflictions and darkness
د سيد طابت مناقبـه محم
د صاغه الرحمن بالنعـم محمMuhammad is a master, who had pleasing virtues
Muhammad is the one who the Most Merciful created full of blessings
د صفوة الباري وخريتـه محم
د طاهر من سائر التهم محمMuhammad is the Creator’s best and elite
Muhammad is unblemished from all evil suspicions

يف مكرمه د ضاحك للض محم
د جارہ والله لم يضم محمMuhammad is cheerful and hospitable to his guest
Muhammad never brought evil to his neighbour, by Allah I swear
نيا ببعثته د طابـت الد محم
د جاء باآليات والحكم محمMuhammad’s emergence caused the world to become delightful
Muhammad came with Qur’anic verses and multiple wisdoms
د يوم بعث الناس شافعنا محم
د نورہ الهادي من الظلم محمMuhammad is our intercessor on the day when humankind is resurrected
Muhammad’s light is the guide out of darkness
د قائم لله ذو همـم محم
د خاتم للرسل كلهم محمMuhammad is dedicated to Allah, with determination
Muhammad is the seal of all the messengers

صل يا سالم عىل الوسيلة
وشمس األنام طلعة الليىلSource of Peace, bless our means to your Presence
The Light of Man and Layla’s appearance
اق أمل الكؤوسا يا ساقي العش
من خمر األذواق يحيي النفوساLover’s Saqi come, fill our cups with wine,
which gives real life and truths beyond mind
حضة اإلطالق أبدت شموسا
محت الرواق عن وجه ليىلSun arose from the Absolute Presence,
Burning the veil from Layla’s countenance
اق حني تجىل مبتغى العش
يف ذات الخالق المول جىلThe Heart’s Desire, our Transcendent Master
In His essence drew closer to the lover
صل يا سالمSource of Peace

من بحر اإلطالق حني تجىل
بكل رونق جمل ليىلBy an out well from the Absolute Sea
Of all splendid things; ‘twas Layla’s beauty!
صاحت األطالق فوق المنابر
وصاح األزهار والروض عاطرBirds singing out songs above the pulpits,
Flowers and gardens breathing out pure scents,
رنت األوتار والحب حاض
ر بحسن ليىل غن يا خمStrings trill notes as the Loved One is present…
Sing more of Layla’s charm, dear wine merchant!
يا عني العيون ظهرت جهرا
بجمع الفنون كأساا وخمراRoots of essence, You appeared clearly
As cup and wine, all diversity.
23Source of Peace
جون طابت الحضة زالت الش
المكنون من كنز ليىل بالسLover’s sorrow fled, the presence came pure,
Sweet by the secret of Layla’s treasure
ابن يلس هام لم سقيا
من خمر األذواق فاين بقياIbn Yellis was enamored when he
Drank, died, was sated, then lived soberly.
الم خري البية عليك الس
ما سقي المدام يف حي ليىلUpon you be peace, best of Allah sent down,
Long as wine is poured there in Layla’s town.
24 The Full Moon Rose Over Us
طلع البدر علينا من ثنيات الوداعThe full moon rose over us
From the Pass of Wada
كر علينا ما دعا لله داع وجب الشGiving thanks is incumbent upon us
As long as a caller calls to Allah
أيها المبعوث فينا جئت باألمر المطاعO he who has been sent to us
You came with a command that is obeyed
جئت رشفت المدينة مرحباا يا خري داعYou came and honoured Medina
Welcome, O best of callers
مرحباا يا مصطفانا نورك الباهي أضاءWelcome O our chosen one
Your precious light shines
طلع البدر عليناThe Full Moon Rose Over Us
25The Full Moon Rose Over Us
رغم أنف الملحدين فيضه عم البقاعDespite the unbelievers
His generous overflowing has encompassed all quarters
لكائنات د درة لل صفوة الباري محمThe elect one of the Creator, Muhammad
The pearl of all creation
مع مدحه بلسم لروحي وله يحلو السPraising him is a healing balm for my soul
It is sweet to hear
أرشقت شمس الكمل بك يا باهي الجملThe sun of perfection rose
With you, O possessor of splendid beauty
اك حقا دائاا للخري ساع جل من سوExhalted is He who has made you in truth
You always hasten to that which is good.
26 O Most Merciful of Those Who Show Mercy
يا أرحم الراحمني يا أرحم الراحمني
يا أرحم الراحمني فرج عىل المسلمنيO Most merciful of those who show mercy, O Most merciful of those who show mercy
O Most merciful of those who show mercy, Relieve the Muslims of their worries
يا ربنا يا كريم يا ربنا يا رحيم
أنت الجواد الحليم وأنت نعم املعنيO Lord, O Generous, O Lord, O Merciful,
You are the Clement, the Magnanimous One, You are the best Helper,
وليس نرجو سواك فادرك إلهى دراك
قبل الفنا والهالك يعم دنيا ودينBesides You we hope in none, rescue us, O Allah, deliver us,
Before impending destruction and demise, that encompasses world and religion,
وما لنا ربنا سواك يا حسبنا
ياذا العال والغنى ويا قوي يا متنيO Allah, besides You we have none; You suffice
O Possessor of Loftiness and Self-sufficiency, O Powerful and Mighty
نسألك وايل يقيم والعدل ك نستقيم
عىل هداك القويم وال نطيع اللعنيO Allah, we ask You to grant us a leader, Who will establish justice so we may act uprightly;
Following Your upright guidance, and so that we do not obey the accursed
يا أرحم الراحمنيO Most Merciful of Those Who Show Mercy
27O Most Merciful of Those Who Show Mercy
ميع القريب يا ربنا يا مجيب أنت الس
ضاق الوسيع الرحيب فانظر إل املؤمننيO Lord! O You Who answers! You are the All-Seeing, the Close
That which is expansive has become straightened, So cast Your gaze at the believers
نظرة تزيل العنا عنا وتدين املنى
منا وكل الهنا نعطاه يف كل حنيOne that will remove from us our distress, One that will bring longings near;
And make near our well-being, Hopes given to us at all times
أسألك بجاه الجدود وايل يقيم الحدود
فينا ويكفي الحسود ويدفع الظاملنيBy the rank of the Grandfathers, You I entreat, For a protector who will establish the boundary lines
Who will establish them for us and be protected from the envious, One who will repel those who oppress
لوات يزيل للمنكرات يقيم للص
ني الح ات محب للص الح يأمر بالصAnd one who will abolish evils, And the prayers he will establish One who will enjoin righteousness, One who loves the righteous
يزيح كل الحرام يقهر كل الطغام
ن الخائفني يعدل بني األنام ويؤمOne who casts out everything unlawful, One who overpowers every tyrant
One who spreads justice between the creation, One who brings security to those in fear
28 O Most Merciful of Those Who Show Mercy
رب اسقنا غيث عام نافع مبارك دوام
نني يدوم يف كل عام عىل ممر السO my Lord! Send down providential, wide-spread showers, Rain that is blessed, beneficial, and lasting
Rain that Lasts each year, And remains through the passing years
رب احينا شاكرين وتوفنا مسلمني
ابقني نبعث من اآلمنني يف زمرة السO my Lord! Give us life as those who are grateful ::: And cause us to die as Muslims
That we may be resurrected among those who are safe ::: In the company of those at the forefront
بجاه طه الرسول جد ربنا بالقبول
وهب لنا كل سول رب استجب يل أمنيBy the rank of Taha, the Messenger, Hasten, O Lord, with Your acceptance
And grant to us every request, O my Lord, respond to me, Amen
عطاك ريب جزيل وكل فعلك جميل
وفيك أملنا طويل فجدعىل الطامعنيO Lord! Your gifts are munificent, And all of Your actions are beautiful
And in You our hopes are lengthy, So for that sake, be generous with those in want
29O Most Merciful of Those Who Show Mercy
يا رب ضاق الخناق من فعل ما ال يطاق
فامنن بفك الغالق لمن بذنبه رهنيO Lord, the grip has tightened, From doing that which is unbearable
So bestow your largesse: unlock the locked, For he whose sins render him under pledge
نوب واست لكل العيوب واغفر لكل الذ
واكشف لكل الكروب واكف أذى املؤذينAnd forgive every sin, And conceal every fault
And grant relief for every difficulty, And protect from the harms of the injurious
واختم بأحسن ختام إذا دنا االنصام
وحان حني الحمم وزاد رشح الجبنيAnd seal [our fates] with the best of ends, When our demise approaches
And the time death comes close, And the perspiration increases
الم عىل شفيع األنام الة والس ثم الص
حب التابعني واآلل نعم الكرام والصAnd then may prayers and salutations, be upon the intercessor of humanity
And upon the family, the best of nobility, and upon the Companions and Followers
30 Salawat
يا نبي سالم عليك يا رسول سالم عليكOh Prophet peace be upon you, Oh Messenger peace be upon you
يا حبيب سالم عليك صلوات الله عليكOh Beloved peace be upon you, May the Blessings of Allah be upon you
أرشق البدر علينا واختفت منه البدورThe full moon has risen upon us, and all other moons became hidden
ور مثل حسنك ما رأينا قط يا وجه السThe like of your beauty we have never seen, O face of happiness
من رأى وجهك يسعد يا كريم الوالدينWhoever sees your face becomes happy, O one of noble parentage
يا نبي سالم عليكSalawat
31Salawat
ايف املبد وردنا يوم النشور حوضك الصYour pure and cool water basin, Will be our watering place on the Day of Resurrection
أنت شمس أنت بدر أنت نور فوق نورYou are a sun, you are a full moon, You are light upon light
دور أنت إكسري وغايل أنت مصباح الصYou are the elixir, you are precious, You are the latern of your hearts
ـد يا رسول الخافقني ياحبيبي يا محـمOh my beloved, O Muhammad, O Messenger of the East and West
ــد يا ضياء كل عني يا مــؤيــد يا ممـــجThe assisted, the honoured, O light of every eye
qasida burda
34 On Lyrical Loveyearning
أمن تــذكر جريان بــذي ســلم
مزجت دمعـاـا جرى من مقلة بدمIs it because of your remembrance of the neighbours of Dhi-salam.
That tears mixed with blood are flowing (from your eyes).
يح من تلقـاء كــاظمة أم هـبت الر
وأومض البق يف الظلمـاء من إضمOr is it because of the breeze blowing from Kaazimah.
Or it is the lightning struck in the darkness of the night Idam
فـم لعينـيك إن قلت اكففـا همـتا
وما لقلبك إن قلت اسـتفق يهــمWhat has happened to your eyes, (the more) you tell them to stop, the more they continue flowing.
What is the matter with your heart, (the more) you tell it to come to its senses, (the more it is distracted).
ب أن الحب منكتــم أيحســب الص
ما بني منســجم منه ومضـطـرمDoes the lover think that his love can be concealed.
While his eyes are shedding tears and his heart is glowing.
يف الغزل وشكوى الغرامOn Lyrical Loveyearning
35On Lyrical Loveyearning
لوال الهوى لم ترق دمعـــاا عىل طلل
وال أرقت لــذكر البـان والعلـمHad it not been for the love, you would not have shed tears at the ruins (of your beloved).
Nor would you become restless at the remembrance of the cypress (tree) the high mountain.
فكيف تنكـر حبا بعد مـا شــهدت
ـقم مـع والس به عليـك عدول الدHow do you deny love after the testimony.
Borne against you by (such) reliable witnesses as your tears and your illness.
وأثبت الـوجد خـطي عبة وضـنى
يـك والعنـم مثل البهـار عىل خدLove has ingrained two lines of fear, and withered your face.
On your cheeks like yellow rose and the reddish tree.
نعم سـرى طيف من أهـوى فـأرقني
ات باأللـم ذ والحب يعتـرض اللـYes! Thoughts of the beloved came to me at night and kept me awake.
And love transforms pleasure into pain.
36 On Lyrical Loveyearning
يــا الئي يف الهوى العذري معـذرةا
مني إليـك ولو أنصفـت لم تلـمyou who reproach me, regarding my love, excuse me.
From me to you if you do justice, you would not reproach me.
عدتـــك حايل ال سـري بسـتت
عن الوشــاة وال دائ بنحســمMy state (of love) has been expressed to you, (now) my secret is no longer concealed.
From those who malign (me), nor is there (something to) check my agony.
ضتني النصح لكن لســت أسمعه مح
ال يف صمـم إن المحب عن العــذYou have sincerely advised me, I did not heed it.
For verily a lover is deaf to those who advise him.
ـيب يف عذيل إين اتهمت نصيح الش
ـيب أبعـد يف نصح عن التهم والشI regarded with suspicion the advice of the elders in reproaching me.
(Wisdom) in the advice of the elders is above suspicion.
37On Admonition About the Caprices of the Self
ـوء مــا اتعظت ارت بالس فـإن أم
ـيب والهـرم من جهلـها بنذير الشVerily my soul which is laden evil did not heed the advice.
Due to its ignorance, from the warning by grey hair and old age.
ت من الفعل الجميل قرى وال أعــد
ضيف ألـم برأسـي غري محتشـمAnd I have not prepared, for good deeds, a feast,
For a guest (that) has lodged on (my) head nor did I honour (him).
لــو كنت أعلـم أين مــا أوقرہ
كتمت سـرا بــدا يل منه بالكتمHad I known that I would not be able to honour him (it).
I would have concealed my secret, which is exposed, by dyeing.
من يل برد جمــاح من غوايتهــا
جم كم يرد جمح الخيــل باللـWho is there that can restrain my wayward-self from its waywardness.
Just as unmanageable horses are restrained by resins.
يف تحذير من هوى النفسOn Admonition About the Caprices of the Self
38 On Admonition About the Caprices of the Self
فـال ترم بالمعاص كسـر شـهوتها
إن الطعـام يقوي شــهوة النهمDo not try, through sinning, to subdue sensual desires.
For verily food, only increases sensual desires.
والنفس كالطفل إن تهملـه شب عىل
حب الرضـاع وإن تفطمه ينفطمYour self (desires) is like when breastfed.
Loves suckling but when you wean it, will stop.
فاصف هواهــا وحاذر أن توليه
إن الهوى مـا تـول يصم أو يصمThen stop its inclinations and beware that it does not overpower you.
Verily lust whenever it overpowers (it will) kill or maim (your character).
وراعهـا وهي يف األعمل سـائة
وان هي استحلت المرعى فال تسـمAnd guard it while it is grazing in (the field of ) actions
If it enjoys pasture, do not let it roam (graze) freely.
39On Admonition About the Caprices of the Self
ةا للمرء قاتلةا ــنت لـذ كـم حس
سـم م يف الد من حيث لم يدر أن السHow often has pleasure been considered good, whereas it turned out to be deadly.
Because he does not know that there is poison in the fat.
سائس من جوع ومن شبع واخش الد
خم فرب مخمصة شـــر من التـAnd fear the evil of (both) hunger and satiation.
For most times hungers (poverty) is more evil that overeating.
مع من عني قـد امتألت واستفرغ الد
من المحـارم والزم حميـة النـدمAnd shed tears from those eyes which have become full.
Of forbidden sights and regard it as obligatory (upon yourself) to guard your eyes from forbidden things.
يطان واعصهـم وخالف النفس والش
ضـاك النصح فاتهـم وان همـا محAnd oppose (your) self (nafs) and shaytaan and disobey them both.
And if both of them give you sincere advice regard it as lies.
40 On Admonition About the Caprices of the Self
وال تطع منهم خصما وال حكمــا
فأنت تعرف كيـد الخصم والحكـمAnd do not obey them both (nafs and shaytaan) as an enemy or as a wise (person).
For you know well the deception of (such) an enemy or a wise (person).
أستـغـفر الله مـن قـول بال عمل
لقد نسـبـت به نسالا لذي عقمI seek forgiveness from Allah from such sayings (preachings) which I do practice upon.
For verily I have attributed (claimed), through this, offspring from a barren woman.
أمرتـك الخـري لـكن ما ائتمرت به
وما اسـتقمت فمـا قويل لك استقمI command you to do good but I do not command myself to do the same.
And I was not steadfast (on deen) so then of what use (value) is my saying to you: "Be steadfast!" (on deen).
وال تـزودت قبـل المـوت نافلـةا
ولـم أصـل سـوى فرض ولم أصمAnd I made no provisions before death of voluntary (nafl) worship.
And I did not perform salaat nor did I fast except what was obligatory.
41On the Praise of the Prophet s
ظلمت سـنة من أحيــا الظالم إل
من ورم أن اشـتكت قدمــاه الضI transgressed the sunnat of him (s) who passed the night (in worship).
Until his feet complained of injury due to being swollen.
وشد من سغب أحشــاءہ وطـوى
تحت الحجارة كشــحاا متف األدمAnd he tied and folded, on account of hunger, around his stomach.
A stone beneath which is his delicate skin.
ـم من ذهب وراودتــه الجبال الش
ـــا شمم عن نفسـه فـأراها أميAnd high mountains of gold (tried to) tempt him.
Towards it, but he was (completely) disinclined due to his high courage.
وأكــدت زهدہ فيها ضورتــه
ورة ال تعــدو عىل العصم إن الضHis piety increased inspite of his need.
For verily need never prevails (overpowers) the infallible.
يف مدح النبيOn the Praise of the Prophet s
42 On the Praise of the Prophet s
نيا ضورة من وكـيف تدعو إل الد
نـيا من العدم لـوالہ لـم تخرج الدHow can the necessities of such a noble personality incline him towards this world.
For had it not been for him this world would not have come out of non existence.
د سـيد الكــونني والثقلـيـن محم
والفريقني من عرب ومن عجـمMuhammad (s) is the leader of both worlds and both creations (man and jinn).
And of both groups, Arabs and non Arabs.
نبينـا اآلمر النــاهي فال أحــد
أبـر يف قــول ال منـه وال نعـمOur Nabi, the one who commands, forbids There is non (parallel to him).
More truthful than him in saying "No" or "Yes".
ـذي ترجى شـفاعته هو الحبيب الـ
لكــل هول من األهـوال مقتحمHe is (Allah’s) most beloved, whose intercession is hoped for.
For every fear (and distress) that is going to come (on the day) of agony (and fears).
دعـا إل الله فاملسـتمسـكون بـه
مستمسـكون بحبـل غري منفصـمHe called (people) towards Allah, so those who cling to him.
Clinging to a rope which will never snap.
43On the Praise of the Prophet s
فــاق النبيني يف خلـق ويف خلـق
ولم يـدانوه يف علــم وال كـرمHe transcends the Prophets, physically and in (noble) character.
And (the other Prophets) cannot come near his in knowledge and noble nature kindness.
وكــلهم من رسـول الله ملتمـس
يـم غرفاا من البحر أو رشفاا من الدThey all obtained from The Messenger of Allah (s)
(Like a) handful (of water) from the ocean or (a few) sips from continuous rains.
هــم وواقفـون لديــه عنـد حد
من نقطة العلم أو من شكـلة الحكـمAnd they all stopped before him at their (assigned) limits.
(Either) of a point of knowledge or to gain one wisdom from (his) wisdom.
ــذي تم معنــاه وصورته فهو الـ
ثم اصطفـاه حبيباا باريء النســمFor he is the on e with whom, ended all outward and inward perfection.
And then the creator of all creation chose his as (His) most beloved.
منـزہ عـن شـريك يف محاســنه
فجـوهر الحسـن فيه غري منقسـمHe has no equal in his magnificence.
The jewel of (excellence) in him is indivisible.
44 On the Praise of the Prophet s
دع مــا ادعته النصارى يف نبيهـم
واحكم با شئت مدحاا فيه واحتكـمDiscard what the Christians claim about their Prophet
Then decide and say what you wish in praise of him(SAW).
وانسب إل ذاته ما شـئت من شـرف
وانسب إل قدرہ ما شئت من عظـمAnd attribute towards his personality whatever you wish of excellence.
And attribute to his dignified status as mush greatness as you wish.
فــإن فضل رســول الله ليـس له
حـد فيعـرب عنـه نــاطق بفمFor verily excellence of the Messenger of Allah has no (limits)
Bounds, that a speaker might (be able to ) express with his mouth.
ا لو نـاسـبت قـدرہ آيـاته عظمـا
أحيـا اسمه حني يـدعى دارس الرممIf his miracles were proportionate (according ) to his rank, in greatness,
Then his name would have, when called out brought decaying bones back to life.
لم ميتحنــا بـا تعيــا العقول بـه
حرصـاا علينـا فلم نرتـب ولم نهمHe did not try to (test) us with that which would confound our minds.
Out of keen interest (kindness) for us, neither were we suspicious about the truthfulness of his mission nor were we confounded (by his doctrines).
45On the Praise of the Prophet s
أعيـا الورى فهم معنــاه فليس يرى
يف القرب والبعـد فيه غـري منفحمHis perfect inner nature made people helpless from comprehending, so it was not understood.
Those near and far, except according to their (helpless) imperfect understanding.
مس تظهر للعينني من بــعد كـالش
رف من أمـم صغريةا وتكـل الطـLike how the sun is seen by the eyes from far.
Verily small, yet hurts (dazzles) the eye (when you stare at it).
نيــا حقيقته وكيف يــدرك يف الد
قــوم نيــام تسلوا عنه بـالحـلمAnd can the reality of him be comprehended in this world.
A sleeping nation whose description of him are (like interpretations of) a dream.
ـه بشــر فمبلغ العــلم فيه أنـ
ـه خري خلـق الله كـــلهم وأنـSo the extreme depth of (our) knowledge concerning him, is that he is a man.
And verily he is the best of all the creation of Allah.
وكــل آي أت الرسـل الكـرام بها
ـا اتصلت من نورہ بهــم فــإنEvery miracle which all the Prophets showed.
Verily they have been derived from his Light.
46 On the Praise of the Prophet s
فـإنه شمـس فضل هـم كــواكبها
يظهرن أنـوارها للنــاس يف الظلمFor verily he is the sun of virtue (and ) they (Prophets) are its stars.
Which show their lights to people only in the dark.
حتى إذا طـلعت يف األفق عـم هدا
ها العـالمـني وأحيت سائـر األممUntil when the sun rose his light spread.
Universally and gave life to all the nations.
أكـرم بـخلـق نبي زانـه خلـق
بالحسـن مشـتمل بالبشـر متسـمHow noble are the physical qualities of the Prophet s, adorned with good character.
(Who) was vested with beauty and disguised by pleasant temperament.
كالزهر يف ترف والبـدر يف شـرف
هر يف همم والبحر يف كــرم والـد(He) is like a blooming flower in its freshness and the full moon in splendour.
And the ocean in generosity and time its fearless courage.
47On the Praise of the Prophet s
كــأنه وهـو فرد من جاللتــه
يف عسـكر حني تلقاه ويف حشــمEven when alone, it appears sue to his grandeur.
As though (he is) in the midst of a large army and its retinue.
ا اللؤلؤ المكنون يف صدف كـــأن
من معــدين منطـق منه ومبتسـمIt is like pearls well preserved in oysters.
From the two mines, of his speech and his smiles.
ال طيب يعــدل تربـاا ضم أعظمه
طوب لمنتشـق منــه وملـتثـمNo perfume equals the dust (earth) which is touching his (s) body.
Glad tidings be to the person who smells it (the dust) and kisses it.
48 On His Birth
أبــان مولدہ عن طيــب عنصہ
يـــا طيب مبتـدإ منه ومختتـمHis birth distinctly showed his pure origin.
O the excellence! Of his beginning and his end.
يــوم تفرس فيــه الفرس أنهـم
قــد أنـذروا بحلول البؤس والنقمOn that day the Persians discovered that they (were going face misfortune)
Were warned with the approach of misfortune and punishment.
وبـات إيوان كسـرى وهو منصدع
كشـمل أصحاب كسـرى غري ملتئمAnd the walls of the palace of Kisra trembled and crumbled.
Like how the army of Kisra was scattered never to be untied again.
والنار خـامدة األنفـاس من أسـف
عليه والنهر سـاهي العني من سـدمAnd the fire (of the Persians) took a cool breath (subsided and died out), out of regret.
While the rivers (of Persia) had sleepless eyes (dries up) from excessive sorrow.
يف مولدهOn His Birth
49On His Birth
وسـاء سـاوة أن غاضت بحريتهـا
ورد واردهـا بــالغيظ حني ظـميSaawah (village in Persia) became grief stricken with the drying up of its lake.
And the (thirsty) water bearer returned in anger with disappointment.
كــأن بالنـار ما بالمـاء من بلـل
حزنـاا وبـالمء ما بـالنار من ضـرمIt is as though fire became wet like water.
Due to grief, while water was (affected by) the blazing fire.
والجن تهتف واألنــوار ســاطعة
والحـق يظهـر من معنىا ومن كـلمAnd the jinn was shouting (at the appearance of the Messenger s) and the Light was glistening.
And the truth (prophecy) appeared with these lights, and with their voices.
وا فــإعالن البشـائر لم عموا وصم
تسمع وبـــارقة اإلنذار لم تشـم (The disbeliever) became blind and deaf, to the announcements of glad tidings.
Nor did they hear and the lighting of warning was nor seen by them.
من بعـد ما أخب األقوام كــاهنهم
بــأن دينـهـم املعـوج لم يقـمAfter their fortune tellers had informed the people.
That their false religions would not stand.
50 On His Miracles
جاءت لــدعوته األشـجار سـاجدةا
تشـي إليه عىل سـاق بــال قدمThe trees answered his call, prostrating.
Walking towards him on shins (truck) without feet.
ا سـطرت سـطراا لم كتبت كــأن
فروعهـا من بـديع الخط باللـقمIt is though writing lines that were written.
With their branches, calligraphically writing of his perfection.
مثل الغمــامة أن سـار ســائرةا
تقيـه حر وطيـس للهجــري حميLike the cloud following him wherever he went.
Sheltering him from the intense heat, (as that) of an oven in the blazing summer.
أقسمت بالـقـمر المنشـق إن لـه
من قـلبـه نسـبةا مبـرورة القسـمI take an oath (of truth) by the moon that was split, it bears.
A connection with his heart (which shows) the truth of my oath.
يف معجزاتهOn His Miracles
51On His Miracles
وما حوى الغـــار من خري ومن كرم
ار عنـه عمي وكــل طرف من الكفWhat excellence qualities and noble deeds the cave contained (in it).
While every eye (of the disbelievers) was blind him.
يق لم يرمـا د دق يف الغــار والص فالص
وهم يقولون مـا بالغــار من أرمThe truth (sidq) and the true(siddique) in the cave were not seen (by the disbelievers).
And they were satiny "There is no one in the cave".
ظـنـوا الحمـام وظـنوا العنكبوت عىل
ة مل تنسـج ولم تحم خــري البيـThey thought a wild dove and a spider would not
Lay an egg, or spin a web for the best of creation.
وقـــاية الله أغنت عن مضــاعفة
روع وعن عــال من األطم من الدThe protection of Allah (made him) dispensed with double.
From armours and high forts.
هر ضيما واسـتجرت به ما سـامني الد
إال ونــلت جـواراا منه لم يـضمWhenever time caused me any distress and I took refuge in him.
I receive shelter from him which was not misused.
52 On His Miracles
ارين من يـدہ وال التمســت غنى الد
إال استلمت الندى من خري مسـتلمI did not ask for the wealth of the two worlds from his hand.
But I received a great gift the best hand that was ever kissed.
ال تنكـــر الوحي من رؤيـاه إن له
قلباا إذا نــامت العينـان لم ينـمDo not deny that his dreams are revelations (wahi), for verily his
Heart does not sleep , when eyes sleep.
تــــه وذاك حني بلــوغ من نبو
فليس ينـكر فيه حـال محتلــمAnd this was at (the period of) puberty of his prophethood.
At that time dreams cannot be denied.
تبــارك الله مــا وحي بكتسـب
وال نــبي عىل غيــب بتهـمGreat are the blessings of Allah that wahi is nor earned.
Nor was any Nabi accused (of lying when) giving knowledge of the unseen.
كــم أبرأت وصبـاا باللمس راحته
وأطلقت أربــاا من ربــقة اللممHow often has his hand granted freedom (cure) from disease by (his) touch.
And set free the insane from the chains (fetters) of insanity
53On His Miracles
ــهباء دعوته ــنة الش وأحيت الس
هـم حتى حكت غرةا يف األعص الدHe revived the starving year (of famine) through his dua.
Until it resembled a white spot on black times.
بعارض جاد أو خلت البطـاح بهــا
سـيب من اليم أو سـيل من العـرمBy means of a cloud which rained so abundantly, you would think large rivers
Gushing forth from the sea or like the torrential flood of Arim.
دعني ووصفي آيـــات له ظهرت
ظهور نـار القرى ليـالا عىل عـلمAllow me to describe the miracles of him (Rasuluallah Sallallahu Alayhi Wassallam) exposed (performed).
Like the lighting of fires on the hillside at night for guests.
ر يزداد حسـناا وهو منتظم فالــد
وليس يـنقص قــدراا غري منتظمThe beauty of a pearl is further enhanced in a necklace.
But its value does not diminish in the least when not strung on a necklace.
فمــا تطـاول آمـال المديح إل
يم مـا فيـه من كرم األخالق والشSo why should the ambitions of those who praise not increase towards
That which (him (Rasuluallah Sallallahu Alayhi Wassallam) ha of noble character and good habits.
54 On the Qualities of the Quran
آيــات حق من الرحمن محدثــة
قــدمية صفة الموصـوف بالقـدمVerses of truth from the Most Merciful (Allah Ta’aala) newly heard.
(As well as being) eternal which is quality (of Allah) Who is described with eternity.
لم تقتن بزمـــان وهي تخبنــا
عن المعـــاد وعن عـاد وعن إرمIt is not connected with any period of time, while it informs us.
About the hereafter as well as of Ad and Iram.
دامت لدينـا ففاقت كــل معجزة
من النبيني إذ جــاءت ولم تـدمWhich remains with us forever, therefore it is superior to every miracle.
Of the other Ambiyaa (for) when (their miracles) came but did not remain.
محكـمت فمــا تبقني من شـبه
لــذي شـقاق وما تبغني من حكمAbsolutely clear (as evidence) so it did not leave (room for any) doubts.
By the enemies nor so they require any judge.
يف رشف القرءان ومدحهOn the Qualities of the Quran
55On the Qualities of the Quran
ما حوربت قط إال عــاد من حرب
لم أعـدى األعـادي إليها ملقي السNo one opposed it ever except for the vehement enemy.
(Due to) the enmity of the enemy towards it,(but that he) refrained from it seeking a truce.
ردت بالغتهــا دعوى معارضهـا
رد الغيور يـد الجــاين عن الحرمIts eloquence refuted the accusations of its objectors.
Just as a respectable man keeps off the hand of a transgressor from his harem.
لها معــان كموج البحر يف مـدد
وفـوق جوهرہ يف الحسـن والقيمIts meaning is like the waves of the ocean in helping (one another)
And the (Qur’an) transcends the jewels of the sea in beauty and value.
فمـا تـعد وال تحـص عجائبهـا
أم وال تسـام عىل اإلكثــار بالسIts wonders cannot be counted nor comprehended.
Nor would you (be) satiated by its constant repetition (recitation).
قرت بهـا عني قاريها فقلت لــه
لقـد ظفـرت بحبـل الله فـاعتصمIt cools the eye of its reciter, so I said to him
You have succeeded with the hope of Allah, therefore hold steadfast onto it.
56 On the Qualities of the Quran
إن تتلها خيفةا من حر نار لظى
بم أطفأت نار لظى من وردها الشIf you recite it due to fear of the heat of blazing fire.
Then you have doused the blazing fire with its cool water.
كــأنها الحوض تبيض الوجوه بـه
من العصاة وقــد جاؤوه كالحمـمIt is the Houze-e-Kauthar with which faces are illuminated.
Of the sinners even though they came to it (with faces) black as coal.
اط وكـالميزان معدلــةا وكـالص
فالقسط من غريها يف النـاس لم يقمIt is like the straight bridge like the scales in equilibrium.
Justice, without which, amongst man cannot be established.
ال تعجب لحسـود راح ينكرهــا
تجاهالا وهـو عـني الحـاذق الفهمDo not be astonished if the jealous person rejects it.
(Feigning ) ignorance while they are shrewd.
مس من رمد قد تنكر العني ضوء الش
وينكر الفم طعم المـاء من ســقمVerily the eye rejects the ray of the sun due to dust.
The mouth rejects the (sweet) taste of water due to sickness.
57On the Ascension of the Prophet s
يـا خري من ميم العـافون سـاحته
سعياـا وفوق متون األيـنق الرسـمYou the best of those to whose court seekers of bounties resort.
Running the (mounted) on the backs of fast camels.
ومن هــو اآليـة الكبى لمعتبـر
ومن هـو النعمــة العظمى لمغتنمAnd O you who is the greatest sign for he who takes a lesson.
And O you who is the greatest bounty for a person who avails himself of it.
يت من حـرم ليــالا إل حرم رس
كم سـرى البدر يف داج من الظلمYou travelled by night from one sacred place to another.
As the full moon travels trough intense darkness.
وبت ترقى إل أن نلـت منزلــةا
من قاب قوسـني مل تدرك ولم تـرمAnd you continued ascending until you attained a position.
At the distance of two cubits length, as has never been attained nor sought.
يف إرسائه ومعراجهOn the Ascension of the Prophet s
58 On the Ascension of the Prophet s
متك جميع األنبيـاء بهـــا وقـد
والرسـل تقديم مخـدوم عىل خـدمAnd you preferred due to your position by all the Ambiyaa.
And Rasuls just as a servant gives preference to his master.
ــبع الطباق بهم وأنت تختق الس
يف موكب كنت فيـه صاحب العـلمYou passed the seven heavens with them.
In a procession in which you were the standard bearer.
حتى إذا لم تدع شــأواا لمســتبق
نو وال مرقىا لمســتنم من الـــدUntil you left no gaol (for) any competitor to strive for.
In closeness, nor any (room for ascent for any one to advance.
خفضت كــل مقام باإلضـافة إذ
نوديت بالـرفع مثل المفرد العــلمYou made inferior every position by (your) advance, when.
You were invited to his majestic and unique position.
كيم تفوز بوصــل أي مســتت
عن العيــون وســـر أي مكتتمSo that you may be successful in a reaching the most concealed.
From all eyes, and secrets well concealed.
59On the Ascension of the Prophet s
فحزت كــل فخار غري مشـتك
وجزت كــل مقــام غري مزدحمSo you acquired every (status) worthy of pride unrivalled.
And you surpassed every position which none other passed.
وجـل مقـدار مـا وليت من رتب
وعز إدراك مــا أوليت من نعــمAnd extremely excellent are the ranks that were granted to you.
And incomprehensible are those bounties which conferred upon you.
بشـرى لنا معشـر اإلسـالم إن لنا
من العنايـة ركنــاا غري منهــدمGlad tiding be to us o people of Islam. We have.
By the Grace of Allah a pillar which is indestructible.
ـا دعا الله داعينــا لطــاعته لم
بـأكرم الرسل كنـا أكـرم األمـمWhen Allah called, the one who invited us (Rasuluallah Sallallahu Alayhi Wassallam) to His worship.
Because of the noblest of messengers, we are the noblest of ummats.
60 On the Chivalrous Struggle of the Messenger of God s
راعت قلوب العـدا أنبـــاء بعثته
كنبـأة أجفلت غفــالا من الغنـمThe hearts of his enemies were struck with terror at the news of his advent.
Just as a heedless goat that has strayed the heard becomes scared to a sudden alarm.
مـا زال يلقــاهم يف كـل معتك
حتى حكوا بالقنـا لحما عىل وضـمHe never ceased to encounter them at every battle.
Until, by the effects of lances they were like meat on a chopping block.
ودوا الفرار فكــادوا يغبطون بـه
أشـالء شـالت مع العقبـان والرخمThey loved fleeing that they would envy.
The corpses which were carried away by vultures and eagles.
تهـا تض الليـايل وال يدرون عد
ما لم تكن من ليــايل األشهر الحـرمNights would pass without them knowing number.
As long as it was not nights of the sacred months (Ashur-e-Horum).

ين ضيف حل سـاحتهم ا الد كـأن
بكــل قرم إل لحم العــدا قـرمIt is as though the religion of Islam was a guest that visited their house.
With every brave warrior, greedy for the flesh of the enemy.
يجـر بحـر خميس فوق ســابحة
يـرمي بوج من األبطــال ملتـطمHe used to lead an ocean of an army on galloping horses.
They would strike ( the enemy) with a massive wave of brave warriors.
من كــل منـتدب لله محتسـب
يسـطو بسـتأصل للكفر مصطـلمOf every volunteer, having hope of reward from Allah.
Fighting to exterminate the roots of kufr and to destroy it.
حتى غدت ملة اإلسـالم وهي بهـم
من بعــد غربتها موصولة الرحـمUntil the religion of Islam became of them.
Reunited after her estrangement, with her family.
مكفولـةا أبـداا منهـم بـخري أب
وخري بعـل فــلم تيتـم ولم تئـمAlways taken care of by an affectionate father
And a loving husband, so she did not suffer from orphanhood nor widowhood.
62 On the Chivalrous Struggle of the Messenger of God s
هم الجبـال فسـل عنهم مصادمهم
مــاذا رأى منهم يف كـل مصطدمThey were mountains, so ask about them from him who fought them.
What was his experience with them in each contest (battle).
ا وسـل حنيناا وسـل بدراا وسل أحدا
فصـول حتف لهم أدهى من الوخمAsk (them about the condition of ) Hunain, Badr, Uhad.
The verdict death for them was more severe than an epidemic.
المصدري البيض حمراا بعدما وردت
من العــدا كل مسود من اللمـم(They made their) white (shinning) swords red (with blood) after they were plunged.
Into every black lock of (hair) of their enemies.
والكاتبني بســمر الخط ما تركت
أقــالمهم حرف جسم غري منعجمAnd they write (with arrows) in calligraphic writing (on those of the bodies), which was left out.
By their pens (lances). Like undotted letters,
ـالح لهم سيم تيزهم شـاك الس
ـلم يم عن الس والورد ميتـاز بالسCompletely clad with weapons they had characteristic marks to distinguish them.
Like arose is distinguished by (characteristic) marks from a thorn tree.
63On the Chivalrous Struggle of the Messenger of God s
تهدي إليـك رياح النص نشـرهم
فتحسب الزهر يف األكمم كل كميThe winds of help (from Allah) would guide you to their fragrance.
So you would think every brave man to be a flower in the bud.
ا كــأنهم يف ظهور الخيل نبت ربـا
ة الحزم ة الحزم ال من شـد من شـدAs though they were, when on horse back like the plants on hills.
On account of the strength and bravery, not because of the tightness of their saddles.
ا طارت قلوب العدا من بأسـهم فرقا
فمـا تـفرق بني البهـم والبهـمThe hearts of the enemies flew into terror (due to their) prowess.
So they could not make distinction between a lamb and a mighty warrior.
ومن تـكن برسـول الله نصتـه
إن تلقه األسـد يف آجـامها تجمAnd the person who has the help of Rasuluallah Sallallahu Alayhi Wassallam with him.
Even if a lion meets him in its den it begins to fear.
ولن تــرى من ويل غري منتصـر
بــه وال من عــدو غري منقسمAnd you would never see a friend not assisted.
By him, nor would you find any enemy, but in pieces.
64 On the Chivalrous Struggle of the Messenger of God s
تـه يف حـرز ملتــه أحــل أم
كالليث حل مع األشـبال يف أجمHe lodged his ummat in the fort of his religion.
Like a lion which lodges with its cubs in a jungle.
لت كـلمت الله من جدل كـم جد
فيه وكـم خصم البهان من خصمHow many queries did the words of Allah have with defiers.
Concerning him, and the clear evidence (of Allah), disputed many a plaintiff.
ي معجزةا كفــاك بـالعلم يف األم
ـأديب يف اليتم يف الجاهـلية والتـIt is sufficient for you as a miracle (to have so vast) knowledge in an unlettered person.
In the period of ignorance, and such noble etiquettes in an orphan.
65On Seeking Intercession Through the Prophet s
خدمته بديــح أســتقيل بـه
عر والخدم ذنوب عمر مض يف الشI served him with praise, by means of which I ask to be pardoned.
The sins of a life passed in poetry and serving (other)
إذ قـلداين ما تخشـى عـواقبـه
كــأنني بهــم هدي من النعمAs these two have garlanded me with that consequences which I fear.
As though I am due to it (poetry and serving others) a sacrificial animal.
با يف الحالتني ومــا أطعت غي الص
لت إال عىل اآلثـام والنـدم حصI obeyed the misleading passions of youth in both conditions and I did not
I achieved but sin and remorse.
فيـا خســارة نفس يف تجارتهـا
نـيا ومل تسـم ين بـالد لم تشت الدThe great regret of my soul in its transaction.
It did not purchase Deen with the world, nor had I negotiated for it.

66 On Seeking Intercession Through the Prophet s
ومن يبــع آجـالا منه بـعاجلـه
يب لـه الغب يف بيـع ويف سـلمThe person who sells his future for his present.
His being defrauded in the sale and its negotiation.
ان آت ذنبـاا فمــا عهدي بنتقض
من النبي وال حبـل بنصـــرمIf I had committed any sin my covenant is not (likely to be) violated.
With my Nabi Rasuluallah Sallallahu Alayhi Wassallam and nor is my rope broken.
ةا منــه بتسـميتي فـــإن يل ذم
مم داا وهو أوف الخلق بــالذ محمFor verily I have a security from him due to my name.
(Being) Muhammad, while he is the most faithful of mankind in fulfilling his promise.
إن لم يكـن يف معـادي آخذاا بيدي
فضالا وإال فقــل يــا زلة القدمIf at my resurrection, he should not take me by my hand
Out of kindness, then say O the slipping of my foot.
حاشــاه أن يحرم الراجي مكارمه
أو يرجع الجــار منه غري محـتمI seek the sanctuary (in Allah) that he should deprive one who is hopeful of his graces.
Or that his neighbour (follower) returned from him dishonoured.
67On Seeking Intercession Through the Prophet s
ومنذ ألزمت أفكـــاري مدائحه
وجدتـه لخالص خــري ملتـزمAnd since I have devoted my thoughts to his praises.
I have found him to be best sanctuary for my salvation.
ولن يفوت الغنى منه يــداا تربت
إن الحيـا ينبت األزهار يف األكـمHis bounty will never escape from (my) hand which has been soiled.
For verily rain causes flowers to bloom on rocks
نيـا التي اقتطفت ولم أرد زهرة الد
يــدا زهري بـا أثنى عىل هـرمAnd I did seek the flowers (wealth) of the world which were plucked.
By the hands of Zuhair through his praises of Haram.
68 On Intimacy and the Petition of One’s State
يــا أكرم الخلق ما يل من ألوذ به
سـواك عنـد حلول الحادث العممMost generous of mankind, I have no one to take refuge in
Except you at occurrence of widespread calamity.
ولن يضيق رسـول الله جاهك يب
إذا الكريم تجىل بــاسم منتقـمAnd O messenger of Allah, your exalted status will not diminish, because of me (intercession on my behalf)
When most Bountiful (Allah Ta’alaa) will manifest (Himself) by the name of the Punisher.
نيا وضتـها فإن من جودك الد
ومن علومـك علم اللوح والقـلمFor verily amongst your bounties is this world, and the hereafter.
And part of your knowledge is knowledge of the Preserved Tablet (Lowh), and the Pen.
يا نفـس ال تقنطي من زلة عظمت
إن الكبـائر يف الغفران كـاللمـمMy soul do not become despondent due to your grievous sins.
Verily major sins when pardoned are minor.
يف املناجاة وعرض الحاجاتOn Intimacy and the Petition of One’s State
69On Intimacy and the Petition of One’s State
لعـل رحمة ريب حني يقســمها
تأت عىل حسب العصيان يف القسمPerhaps the mercy of my Lord when distributed.,
Would be distributed in proportion to the sins.
يا رب واجعل رجائ غري منعكس
لديـك واجعل حسايب غري منخرمMy Lord (Sustainer)! Make my hopes, not unfulfilled.
By you, and make my reckoning (of deeds) not destructive.
ارين إن لـه والطف بعبدك يف الد
صباا متى تـدعه األهـوال ينهزمBe kind to Your Servant in both the worlds, for verily his
Patience, when called upon by hardships (calamities), runs away.
وأذن لسحب صالة منـك دائة
عـىل النبي بنهــل ومنسـجمSo order clouds of blessings (salutations) from you perpetually.
Upon Nabi Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam abundantly and gently
ما رنحت عذبات البان ريح صبـا
وأطرب العيس حادي العيس بالنغمAnd upon his family his Sahabah, then upon those who follow them.
The people of piety, knowledge, clemency and generosity.
70 On Intimacy and the Petition of One’s State
ثم الرضـا عن أيب بكر وعن عمر
وعن عل وعن عثمـان ذي الكرم(Then) be pleased with Abu-bakr and Omar (Radiyallahu Anhuma).
And Ali and Uthman (Radiyallahu Anhuma), the people of nobility.
حب ثم التابعني فهـم واآلل والص
أهل التقى والنقى والحلم والكـرمAs long as the easterly breeze makes the branches of cypress rustle.
And (as long as) the camel riders make their camels march with the enchanting songs.
يـا رب بالمصطفى بلغ مقاصـدنا
واغفر لنا ما مض يا واسع الكـرمO my Lord! with the Elect One make us attain our goals,
and forgive us for what has passed, O Most Munificent One!
