3.2 Community of Scholars/Research Opportunities

A medical education program is conducted in an environment that fosters the intellectual challenge and spirit of inquiry appropriate to a community of scholars and provides sufficient opportunities, encouragement, and support for medical student participation in research and other scholarly activities of its faculty.

Requirements

3.2a The medical school informs medical students about, and encourages them to participate in research and other scholarly activities of the faculty.

3.2b The medical school supports medical student participation in research and other scholarly activities of the faculty (e.g. coordination of student placements, development of opportunities, or provision of financial support).

3.2c Student survey data show that respondents who wanted to participate in a research or other scholarly activities with a faculty member had the opportunity to do so.

Formal Programs: BSc (Med), Med 1 or Med 2 Summer Research, MD/MSc or PhD

Admin supports Student in the programsSummer Stipend $7,500/yr or Grad Student Stipend ($26,000/yr)

58.4% to 68.4% of graduates participated in research opportunities in last 3 years1.1% (2018) responded that a lack of opportunity affected their participation

Summary

Take-Aways (pertain to Rady FHS, Max Rady College of Medicine)

• Suggests we should give Faculty >50% research time if we expect them to have National PI Funding

• Suggests we should not expect individuals with <50% research time to have National PI Funding.

(esp. junior faculty)

• Suggests we should align recruitment of Faculty with <50% research time to “research teams”

Internal Grant Funding

Rady Faculty of Health Sciences Innovation Fund – Three awards of $100,000 per year

Winnipeg Foundation Innovation Fund – Two awards of $100,000 per year

• To seed innovative interdisciplinary research in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences between member departments and colleges. In so doing, it is intended to enhance the University’s national recognition in innovative interdisciplinary research with disruptive impact, as well as competitiveness in terms of national research funding.

• Proposals with evidence of an integrated team approach, ideally involving members from different departments/colleges will be given priority. In addition, priority is placed on providing grants to proposals with disruptive potential; the ability to have major impact in the short-term (2-3 years); and with a high likelihood of leading to national/international funding.
