It felt almost surreal to bring our baby back home. We were so excited after all that time spent doing and undoing the baby car seat, making sure we’d be ready for D-day. Travel safely Don’t forget that it’s compulsory to use a car seat for your baby – even newborns. The safest place to fit the car seat is the centre of the rear seat as this reduces the risk of injury from a side-impact crash.

Travel comfortably Small babies can become too hot or too cold very quickly. Make sure your little one is warm and comfortable, but remember that too many layers may cause baby to get too hot.

Did you know that during your baby’s

first year, you will walk an average of

600 miles? So it’s really important to

choose a good quality pushchair that

will not let you down. You

also need to consider your lifestyle and

how you are going to use your pushchair:

Do you live in a city flat with lots of stairs?

Do you travel by car or public transport?

Pushchairs with large wheels are great for off-road walks.

In town life is best navigated in a more compact pushchair

with smaller wheels to manoeuvre around the crowds. If

you use public transport frequently, you will need to lift

your pushchair quite often, so a compact

lightweight pushchair is your best choice.

Some pushchairs even stay upright

once folded which is ideal to

store out of way in the bus/train.

Check to make sure that your

dream pushchair will fit in your

car boot too.

A pushchair is an item you will use probably almost

everyday, so it has to be practical for you. A quick and

easy folding pushchair will save you loads of stress

while shopping. A height-adjustable handle means that

the pushchair can suit you and your

partner. For your child’s comfort,

“Yes, by law children must travel in an

appropriate car seat until they reach

1.35m/ 4ft 5in tall (1.5m in the Republic

of Ireland) or are aged 12, whichever

comes first.”

“No, not every seat fits every car so

check its compatibility using the car

fitting list on the Maxi-Cosi website.

Always take your car with you when

choosing your new car seat so that

you know it fits in the vehicle

and can be shown how to

install it securely.”

“Yes, up to 13kg your newborn is safest

travelling in a rearward facing car seat.

In an accident, the car seat and belt

will take the force of the impact while

fully supporting your baby’s head and

neck. You can choose to have a baby

car seat (also called infant carrier)

that is compatible with a pushchair or

a combination car seat that will take

your child from birth up to 18kg.” “No, all Maxi-Cosi

car seats can be

installed in the car

in the rear of the vehicle as this reduces the risk of injury

from a side-impact crash. The rear passenger is the next

best location to fit your car seat as it is away from the most

common side of impact. A

should never be installed

on a front passenger seat

if a frontal airbag is fitted.”

Where is the best place to fit a car seat in the car? What do you need to know about child seat safety?

IsoFix is an internationally standardised system to

install child car seats in cars correctly without the

need for car seat belts. It is very user-friendly and

significantly reduces the risk of incorrect installation.

IsoFix connection points are permanently connected

to the body of the car and your IsoFix car seat

or base attaches securely to these connection

points. Most new cars even come fitted with a third

fixing point for a top tether strap.

“Check your vehicle’s handbook to see if your car has IsoFix

connection points. Most relatively new cars will have IsoFix

but the location of the IsoFix fitting points vary between cars

and they are sometimes concealed. You can

also check the Maxi-Cosi car fitting list on the

Maxi-Cosi website or scan this QR code with

your smartphone. See the section below on

“Always choose the correct car seat for your child’s

current height and weight, age should only be used as an

indication. I would highly recommend keeping your baby

in the rearward facing position for as long as possible. As

long as your baby’s head is positioned within the seat shell

and their weight doesn’t exceed 13kg, rearward facing

remains the safest way to transport your baby. Check the

car seat categories chart page 23 for all details on when to

move your child to the next stage car seat.”

”If you are still unsure about your choice of car seats or

have more questions about the different options, seek

advice from your retailer.”

“No, it might be financially tempting but you can’t be sure

a second-hand car seat hasn’t been in a crash. Any seat

involved in a collision MUST be replaced as its structure could

be compromised even if there is no visible sign of damage.

When it comes to installation, the chances are you won’t have

the instruction manual for a second-hand car seat and won’t

be sure you are fitting it correctly.“

It may feel like it’s time consuming to install your car seat and your child correctly in the car but it could save

your child’s life in the event of an accident.

Each car seat is tailored to fit your child’s current needs, offering the highest level of comfort, safety and convenience. Your child’s safety is Maxi-Cosi’s top priority, so you can enjoy all those precious moments whilst travelling with your child.

When the top of baby’s ears reach the top of the back of the seat (top of baby’s head reaches orange dotted line).

The shoulders of the child should be 2cm above the openings for the shoulder straps in the toddler seat, when headrest is set in highest position.

You no longer legally require a child car seat if your child is 1.35 or 1.50 (in Ireland) metres tall.

As we have such a wide range of car seats, it’s important to know which car seat fits your child’s needs. The tips below will help you to define which category your child is currently in, what area of the body needs protection and when you need to move your child to the next stage seat.

When is it the right time to move your child to the next stage car seat?

What is the best car seat for my child? The best car seat is the one that suits your child’s current

height and weight, fits your car(s), is easy to install while

offering the highest level of safety possible. Here are some

useful tips and recommendations to help you decide

which car seat is best for your child.

Car seat options for your newborn include baby car seats

(also called infant carriers) which are compatible with

Maxi-Cosi and Quinny pushchairs and can be installed

with the car seat belt or a base. You can also choose

a combination car seat suitable from birth to 4

years, making it a long lasting travel solution.

Don’t forget to look at bases too. Once they

are installed in the car securely, you’re

guaranteed peace of mind that your

little one is safe, and the seat

simply clicks in and out

with ease, perfect for busy

parents. See page 26-33 for

Maxi-Cosi options.

In the car, your baby is safest when travelling in a

rearward facing seat until 13kg (approx. 15 months). It is

recommended to keep your baby in a rearward facing seat

as long as possible but it’s time to move up to a toddler

seat when the top of your baby’s ears reach the top of the

back of the baby seat. See page 23 for more details and

pages 34-35 for Maxi-Cosi toddler car seat options.

It may seem a long way off, but time does fly!

Between your child’s 3rd and 4th birthday,

it’s recommended that you upgrade them

to the next stage car seat to ensure your

child is well protected on trips to

school, playdates and many

more! These car seats

are built with your child’s

comfort in mind and include an adjustable backrest,

which allows you to change the height and sometimes

width to suit your growing child! Check the signs for when

your child is ready to move to the next

stage child seat on page 23.

Choosing your first car seat

Meet the Maxi-Cosi 2wayFamily, consisting of the 2wayFix Base, Pebble baby car seat and 2wayPearl i-Size toddler car seat. The 2wayFamily offers safe rearward facing travel from birth right up to approx. 4 years of age. The Maxi-Cosi 2wayFix Base provides perfect anchorage for both the Pebble and 2wayPearl seats, with visible and audible confirmation that the connection is secure. Because of its click-on/off system, it is easy to fit and will be ready to go in seconds.

‘i-Size’ (ECE R129) is the name of a new EU safety legislation that was ratified in July 2013 and increases the safety level of child car seats, most notably by stating that babies must travel rearward facing for at least the first 15 months ( in i-Size car seats).

One of the biggest changes to be brought about by i-Size is the

extended length of time required for the initial rearward facing

child seats. The current ECE R44/04 regulation requires that

children weighing less than 13kg be placed in rearward facing

seats. However, it also allows children above 9kg to be placed

forward facing (which is about 8-9 months). Many parents

move their baby to a forward facing car seat too early as they

mistakenly believe that their child has outgrown the seat

when their feet stick out of the car seat. The new regulation

helps avoid this premature switch by stipulating that rearward

facing travel is mandatory for children up to 15 months old in

i-Size car seats. This increase in the rearward facing period is

necessary because a child’s head is relatively heavy during their

first year and their neck is not strong enough to withstand the

impact of a head-on collision. In the event of a frontal impact,

the impact in a rearfacing seat is spread across the whole body

and the child’s head is cushioned - not thrust forward.

i-Size: safer extended rearfacing travel

i-Size does not replace the current ECE R44/04 car

seat legislation, but will run side by side with it for the

foreseeable future. This means you do not need to

upgrade your existing child car seat and car seats

complying with ECE R44/04 may continue to be sold

and used safely. The introduction of i-Size simply means

that you now have an extra safer option when buying a

car seat for your child.
