20 million children received

a free or reduced-price school lunch in 2017-2018 school year

12.5 million children

received a free or reduced-price school breakfast in the 2017-2018 school year (57 of every 100 students participating in NSLP)

Making the Most of Breakfast with BATB

▪ Most successful strategy for increasing school

breakfast participation

▪ Overcomes timing, convenience and stigma

▪ Even more impactful when combined with CEP or

other universal free program

▪ Generally three options when serving BATB

▪ Think: free meals + increased access = higher

participation


Breakfast in the

Classroom

▪ Staff packs breakfasts into

coolers or insulated bags to

be transported to each

classroom

▪ Students eat during the first

10–15 minutes of class during

morning announcements or

attendance

▪ Ideal for lower-grade levels

where children start the day in

the same classroom with the

same teacher each day

Grab and Go

• Staff packs breakfast meals in

bags to be picked up from the

cafeteria or kiosks in the hallway

on the way to class.

• Students pick up breakfast as

they arrive at school and eat on

the way to class or at their desks

after the bell during the first 10–

15 minutes of class.

• Works well for schools that don’t

have capacity to deliver food to

each classroom.

Second Chance

Breakfast

▪ Breakfast is provided after

1st period/ homeroom

▪ Similar to grab and go,

meals are served from

cafeteria or carts located in

the hallway

▪ Works well in middle and

high schools

COMMUNITY ELIGIBILITY PROVISION (CEP)

PROVISION 2

Provision 2 allows schools to offer breakfast, lunch, or both school meals at no

cost to all students. This federal option runs on a four-year cycle.

Community Eligibility allows schools to offer breakfast AND lunch at no cost to

all students. This federal option runs on a four-year cycle.

20 million children received a free or reduced-price school lunch in 2017-2018 school year

Streamlining CACFP for School Food Authorities – USDA policy

• State agencies may allow SFAs to sign an addendum to existing NSLP application

• State agencies can waive the requirement that SFAs submit a separate management plan

• State agencies may allow SFAs to use NSLP meal pattern


Afterschool Meals• Identify all programs operating in schools

• Athletes can participate as long as there is an existing enrichment program happening at school

• Ensure all programs know meals are available

• Explore flexibility in service models• Concession stand model (pick up from cart and go to program)

• In the classroom

Afterschool Meals – Maximize Service Days

• Afterschool meals are available on weekends and school breaks, but the option is underutilized • Identify and target weekend programs operated by schools

and community partners

• Experiment with menu and food delivery options • If daily delivery isn’t possible, explore preparing/delivering

meals on Friday

• Develop plan for spring break/holiday breaks
