SPRING AND SUMMER Events

Give Tennis a Shot!THE MOUNT BAKER TENNIS COURTS ARE OPEN AND READY FOR PLAY. The courts, which had fallen in to disrepair and have been closed for many years, underwent a major upgrade in 2013. The City was approached by the School District 5 staff to explore possibilities to partner on rebuilding some tennis courts. At the time, of the ten courts located at Mount Baker, Kinsmen and Gyro parks, four were closed, and the remaining six had issues with cracks and heaving. As the City was already looking at repairing some courts, it was an excellent fit to partner with the School Dis-trict to fully rebuild the Mount Baker facility. By combining financial and staffing resources, and along with receiving a grant from the Columbia Basin Trust Community Initiatives, the courts were rebuilt from the ground up.What’s new at this facility? Firstly a plexi-pave surface will allow for excellent traction while playing the game, as well

as an easy to maintain surface. Two courts feature an additional set of lines for “Pickleball”, a variation on tennis that utilizes paddles and a wiffle ball, and a smaller court area. The sport is very popular with seniors, and is taking off across North America. With the opening of the four courts, the Cranbrook Tennis Association has undergone a revitalization, and is back in full “swing”. The Association invites Cranbrook and area residents to join in a low cost, fun, and healthy way to stay fit! Anyone who has played, or wants to play, is encouraged to come out to the new Mount Baker Courts, where they meet every Wednesday and Sunday evenings from 6:30pm to 8:30 pm. All levels of play are welcome. The club also provides racquets and balls to get you started, just wear your sneakers!

IDLEWILD PEACE PARKThe Cranbrook Celebration for Peace Society and Leisure Services would like to invite the citizens of Cranbrook and the entire East Kootenay, to enjoy the peace, serenity, and beauty of our Idlewild Peace Park. The Peace Park, located at 3379 - 9th St. S., was established and dedicated in 1993; the initiative generated from the Canadian Government and like-minded NGO’s; and locally with dedication and hard work on the part of our then Parks and Recreation Division, the Baha’i Community, and many dedicated local citizens and businesses - all of these people recognizing and embracing the idea of fostering peace within our own boundaries.

In 2010 it was brought to the fore front that not many of our citizens realize that we have a Peace Park or why. A group of individuals under took to rectify that by planning the first annual Celebration for Peace, honoring United Nations International Day of Peace, September 21 of each year. Two plus years ago it was discovered that in 1993 our Peace Park was not registered with the Peace Parks in Canada. Our committee at that time contacted the Interna-tional Institute for Peace through Tourism, the organizing body in 1992. We are overjoyed to share that we have finally become registered with Peace Parks in Canada!Check out the web site: www.iipt.org, on the right side of the page click on “Peace Parks Across Canada”. This link is also on our Facebook Page: cranbrookpeacepark - please check out the history and enjoy the Celebrations for Peace and the children’s projects. We extend a very warm and sincere invitation to everyone to enjoy the Fourth Annual Celebration For Peace, Sunday, September 21, 2014 hosted for the first time in Rotary Park from 1:00-4:00 pm.

POOL For everyone’s safety and health, please use dedicated deck shoes or bare feet while walking from the change rooms to poolside. To maintain clear water conditions and to keep the water filter system working optimally, please have a cleansing shower BEFORE entering the pools. Children in diapers must wear an approved swim diaper with a tight fitting swim suit or plastic diaper cover. For your convenience, we sell disposable and Gabby’s reusable swim diapers at the front desk.Children under seven years of age must be within arms reach of a parent or guardian sixteen years of age or older at all times. There is a maximum ratio of one parent or guardian to three children under the age of seven. Although our public swim often runs for a continuous block of time, it is advised that children take a break after a maximum of two hours in the pool to rest and rehydrate.

WATERSLIDE The BCSA and the Safety Code for Amusement Rides and Devices Act have implemented regulations for the use of our waterslide. • A child must be 42” tall to ride the waterslide. • No double sliding will be permitted at all - including parents and small children.

VIEWING DECK The viewing deck is an area for individuals who want to watch the pool activities. It is a great place to read or visit with a friend while your kids are swimming. This is the only location on the poolside where health standards allow street clothing and shoes. Please be advised that NO FOOD is allowed in this area but there are seats and tables in the lobby. Please do not use the viewing deck as an entrance or exit to the pool, or as an area to change your children. For the safety of all our visitors, camera and video use is restricted and requires supervision by staff. Please ask one of our staff before using a camera.

CHANGE ROOM Parents changing children over five years of age of the opposite gender must use the family change room. Please do not leave your belongings in the family change rooms while you are swimming. It is strongly advised to lock up all belongings. There are lockers available for 25 cents. It is prohibited to eat or drink in any of the change rooms.
