Weekly Halachah

R’ Mordechai Torczyner – [email protected] When Shabbat ends late, may I have my underage children make havdalah early, before bedtime? Children should not recite havdalah before Shabbat is over; the mitzvah of educating children involves training them to perform each mitzvah in its proper form. Theoretically, children who go to sleep before Shabbat is over should recite havdalah on Sunday morning, as an adult would. [Note: One who recites

havdalah in the morning does not use besamim or a flame.] However, some contend that underage children should not recite havdalah on Sunday

morning, arguing that as minors they are exempt from making up the mitzvah, and that we don't wish to train them to delay havdalah until Sunday.

DONATIONS ALIYOT DONATIONS

By: MARYAM KOCHMAN, Grade 6

This weeks parsha is about laws that Hashem gave us and commanded us to do.

One of the laws is about leaving stuff to give to the poor. This was made because Hashem is charita-

ble so we should display the same kindness to the poor.

Another law is that we can't steal. This law was made because if we all stole from each other our soci-

ety would break apart. The last law that I will talk about today is that you shall not gossip. It is be-

cause it can be the cause of fights.

Shabbat Shalom

By Jordan Jesin, Grade 9

In this week's Parsha, we find what seems to be one of the most important Mitzvot in the entire To-

rah, according to Rabbi Akiva. In Perek Yud Tet, Pasuk Yud Chet, it is written: "Ve'ahavta

Le'reacha Kamocha", Love your neighbour like yourself.

There is a big question when it comes to this Mitzvah. Is it really possible for me to love my neigh-

bour just as much as I love my amazing, handsome, and humble self??? It is very difficult to accom-

plish this, so what does the Mitzvah actually require of us?

Ramban and Chizkuni explain that it is not about how much you love your fellow man, rather it is

about how you behave towards them. That is why the Torah writes "Le'reacha" instead of "Et Rea-

cha". It is not about feelings, but rather, about actions. This means that you should try to help them

when they are in need and try to connect with them. You should behave towards them in the same

way you would like them to behave towards you.

In these times of hardship, we should all remember this Mitzvah, and do our best to stay connected

with our neighbours and loved ones.

Shabbat Shalom!

DIVREI TORAH: Every week, a couple BAYT Youth members will be offering Divrei

Torah. Please print the sheet and have someone read them at your Shabbos

table. If you or someone you know would like to write one,

please contact Rich at [email protected].
