American jockeys won 15 of the 28 runnings of the Kentucky Derby. The Northeast State Singers of Northeast State Community College present the “Anything Goes” spring concert on May 5 at 7 p.m. in the Wellmont Regional Center for the

Performing Arts Theater on the main campus in Blountville. The concert features special guests the Appalachian Express Chorus.

The Northeast State Singers were established under the College’s Department of Music and instructor Tawana Teague. The students who comprise the Northeast State Singers perform at college events including Honors Convocation, spring commencement, and Veterans’ Day

ceremonies. The group has also performed several holiday concerts. The Appalachian Express Chorus has been entertaining audiences with the sounds of four part Barbershop harmony. The men who comprise the Appalachian Express come from all

areas of the greater Tri-Cities, and their talents

have allowed the Chorus to become one of the

most respected singing organizations in the region.

The Chorus entertains through annual shows,

participation in FUNFEST and performances for other civic groups and churches.

Full Moon week has the bright moonshine blot-ting out all but the brightest stars - and three

planets in the evening sky. Venus is amazingly bright in the west during evening twilight, but

it’s beginning its dive to the horizon and an encounter with the Sun when it passes in front

of our star on June 5. At 9 p.m., Mars is directly overhead in Leo near the bright star Regulus. Rising in the southeast are two stars side-by-side. Left is planet Saturn, right is Spica, the

Having wondered about this topic many times myself, I read the results with considerable interest. In fact, I ques-!-7.$!"#$*'#$7H$!"#$27&+$B3,'#6HF$-.$the preceding sentence. Is this word really necessary? Probably not, but I don’t think I would vote to ban it just yet.

Let’s take a look at what words Greenman’s readers (and tweeters) have marked for death. Interestingly #.7*@"I$!"#$%&'!$!2##!'$:&7:7'#+$eliminating some politically-charged 27&+'$6-?#$Bd)'"-.@!7.IF$'*::7'-edly because this word in particular evokes too many negative emotions ).+$!"7*@"!'0$O##+6#''$!7$'),I$4).-ning the word will not do away with the problem, as witnessed by those

One of Greenman’s tweeters chal-lenged the other tweeters to think of any sentence that couldn’t be improved by eliminating the word altogether.
