Round up the family for some old-fashioned fun at the Historic
O’Keefe Ranch.Founded in 1867, the working ranch
tells the story of early B.C. ranching endeavours.
Visitors can take a walk through the old O’Keefe Victorian-style Mansion, view the original pump organ of St. Anne’s Church, shop in the general store, or visit the Blacksmith. People even still get married in the beautiful little chapel built so long ago.
Guides dressed in traditional garb can tour you through the buildings that hold so much history. There is also an on-site museum to honour the heritage of the days of old and a new interactive kids centre.
Guests can feel free to wander the pet friendly ranch and take in the collection of vintage farm machinery, pan for gold, see the huge model railway display, catch a glimpse of some of the critters or grab a bite at the famous Cattlemen’s Club Restaurant. The ranch also has RV parking and camping sites.
Opening day is May 9 for Mother’s Day, followed by numerous events, including Murder Mystery and
Dinner (May 15 and 16), Dog Daze on the Ranch (June 14, also the ranch’s 148th birthday), Father’s Day and Car Rally (June 21), Flat Track Racing, youth camps and the B.C. brew Festival (Oct. 3).
Cruise back in time to the Vintage Motorcycle Rally July 25 and 26.
Cowboy Dinner Shows are every Friday night in July and August.
There are two Family Fun Days at the Ranch, July 19 and Aug. 23.
The Cowboy Summer Festival, which offers cowboy competitions, demonstrations and more runs Aug 1-3. Hot Rods roll into the ranch Aug. 8 for the Car Rally with Wine and Piggy Roast.
Halloween is also a highly anticipated time of year at O’Keefe with a number of spooktacular events.

The BC Open Gold Panning Championships return to Enderby May 15-17 at Riverside Park. The family fun event is filled from morning to night with events like panning, gold rush, claim staking, dirt toss, pan toss, bannock baking, metal detect-ing, music and games for all different ages and qualifications. All prizes are small nuggets. There’s also pancake breakfasts for $5 on Saturday and Sunday. The elimi-nation round goes Sunday along with other games, raffle draws and trophies to the winners. Ever miss the days of watching movies under the stars? Well Enderby is home
to North America’s largest drive-in screen. The Starlight Drive-In, off Highway 97 just before Enderby, shows two movies for one low price. There’s a snack bar, boasting the lowest concession prices in B.C.,
with candy, beverages, nachos, hot dogs, fries and of course popcorn. The
drive-in is open weekends only until June 21, when the big screen will light up the sky

For more than 100 years Vernon Golf and Country Club has long been a favourite spot for people from near and far to hit the links. Nestled in between downtown Vernon and Kalamalka Lake, this semi-private course lets golfers enjoy a peaceful round surrounded by lombard poplars and weeping willows. Hillview Golf Club is a popular, fast-playing, 18-hole executive course that is short, but demanding. Sitting at par 57, only 3 holes are a par 4, but they are no easy task. The beach isn’t the only way to the beat the summer heat in the North Okanagan.
Vernon is home to the region’s only waterslides, just five minutes north of town.
The ultimate fun-stop is above Swan Lake, where you can ride the slides at Atlantis Waterslides. The family-fun centre features nine slides for varying ages and abilities plus the popular river riot. There’s also a hot tub, mini golf, arcade, ice cream parlour, concession and new this year is a Kids Zone high tech playground. The waterslides are open June 6 (but are closed June 8 - 11) to Sept. 7. Dads get in free June 21 for Fathers Day, then come for a full night of sliding during Midnite Madness July 24 and some extended play will be offered Sept. 6 for Customer Appreciation Day with prizes, slide competition with age category, food specials and loads of fun.

For the littler ones looking to cool off, head to Polson Park, which is a beautiful place to visit on its own, and check out the free spray park. It’s open for weekends in June and everyday during July and August from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
There’s also a wading pool for the little swimmers at Lakeview Park (AKA the Peanut Pool) at the corner of 18th St. and 30th Ave. for more free fun. The pool is open daily June 27 to Aug. 31 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Or take a drive out to Lavington, part of Coldstream, and cool off in the pool on Lavington Way at the park. It’s also open June 27 to Aug. 31. It’s open from noon to
7 p.m. everyday but is closed for an hour for swimming lessons at 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
If the weather isn’t co-operating, or you just want to get out of the sun, take a splash at the Vernon Aquatic Centre (3310 37th Ave. just off Highway 97 behind Boston Pizza). Equipped with a 25 metre lap pool, leisure pool, hot tub, sauna and steam room it is a great place for the whole family. Children and adults alike can have fun on the rock climbing wall, rope swing and giant water slide. No sunscreen or umbrellas required. The pool does shut down for maintenance Aug. 24 to Sept. 20.

Armstrong is also home to an outdoor heated pool, which is open from late May to Sept. 1. Public swimming information can be obtained from 250-546-9456.
In Enderby, the Lions pool is situated in beautiful Barnes Park. The pool is five lanes by 25 metres and is open from May 29 to the end of August. Washroom facilities, playground, skateboard park, and picnic
area are situated next to the pool.
Lumby is also home to an outdoor pool and a brand new spray park in the

The sounds of summer will keep the region humming as music festivals fill the air.The second annual Okanagan Military Tattoo is set for July 25 and 26 at Kal Tire Place.

Splash into one of the many lakes to beat the heat or take it easy on one of the beautiful beaches the North Okanagan has to offer.
Kal Beach is located at the north end of Kalamalka Lake (in Coldstream) and offers a long meandering beach with a pier perfect for a sunset stroll. With golden sands there is a large area blocked off for swimming, and some great shaded areas for cooling off. A close walk away there is a family-friendly pub with an adjacent liquor store, a convenience store, a stand up paddle board shop, a booth to rent life jackets and kayaks, and in the summer there is a concession stand.
Around Kalamalka Lake there are numerous smaller areas to take a dip such as Kekuli, Kalavista, Kirkland and Sovereign beaches.
Further down the lake there is also Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park, where you can hike into several sandy, and rocky, alcoves.
While many people are attracted to the
turquoise tranquility of Kal Lake, the region is also home to Okanagan Lake.
Kin Beach is located at the far north end of Okanagan Lake and is a popular spot for a splashing good time. This popular hangout offers not only the beach itself, but a wonderful park with barbecue pits, a large grassy area, a playground, towering trees and covered picnic areas.
Paddlewheel Park beach is also a great place for family fun and is located on Okanagan Landing Road with a boat launch on site.

If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, you can head out to the nearby provincial parks of Ellison, Mabel Lake and Fintry.

The snow may be gone but Silver Star Mountain Resort is still in high gear when it comes to high-flying excitement.
Mountain biking, hiking, cross country biking, outdoor discoveries tours, disc golf and geocaching are just a few of the offerings.
A highlight this year at the Star is the 5 km Foam Fest June 13. The new ‘funcore’ event will see teams and ‘foamilies’ dress up in costume and take on the obstacle course.
Silver Star’s bike park is open June 25 to Sept. 7 and offers more than 50 kilometres of downhill trails, 300 dirt jumps, 600 berms, 551 vertical metres of riding and more than 30 kilometres of cross country trails. Bring the bikes out early June 20 and 21 to test the trails before the mountain opens to seven days a week.
Then the summer rides in with the Norco RAD Festival (June 27-28) and B.C. Enduro (June 28), B.C. Cup Weekend (July 3-5),
Turbo Air DH Memorial for AJ Cleary (July 19) and Single Track 6 Race (July 27). There are also bike camps available for riders of any skill or gender throughout the summer.
But summer at the Star is about more than just bikes.
It will be a mountain of music and dance with the biggest piping, drumming and highland program in North America beginning July 5 and running two weeks. Called Piping Hot Summer Drummer, the program offers participants the chance to learn from world-class teachers and performers.
The Silver Star Wine and Food Festival goes Aug. 7 to 9 with wine Masters’ Dinners, alpine flower hikes, art gallery viewings, wine and food seminars and the Mile High Wine Tasting presented by Valley First. Then Mountain of Ale Beer and Cider Festival returns to the Star Aug. 29 featuring companies from across B.C. and Alberta.

The centre runs out of the oldest surviving brick schoolhouse in B.C. (former Clarence Fulton Secondary) in Polson Park.
The science centre is open Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information visit www.okscience.ca.
