Editors Letter....

Did you know the first day of the

month of May is known as May

Day. It is the beginning of warmer

weather, whilst flowers and blossom

fill our gardens. Morris dancing,

crowning of the May Queen and

dancing round the Maypole are also

a few of our many English traditions. This time of year the garden definitely

needs some work, no matter how low

maintenance it may be! There are plenty

of adverts in this issue of the Arrow

to tempt you into buying those Summer

bedding plants and also if your lawn needs

some tender loving care, give

Greenthumb a call, it works out much

cheaper then buying the DIY treatments! Last month I asked anyone to come

forward with photos, postcards and

information about local history in your

area. For any articles or photographs

chosen for the magazine, you will receive

a gift voucher to the value of £10 to treat

yourself at Jonathan David’s of Epworth.

Come on all you historians, send your

information in!

Also this month is the first of our ‘Flowers

for Someone Special’, courtesy of Toni

Gravel of Epworth; please send in your

nominations for that special person who

deserves a bouquet. (page 21 for main advert) Have a glorious May and enjoy the read.

Best Wishes

As you are probably aware by now

the Arrow likes to support new

businesses opening in the Isle.

This month we have two, one

opening up in Epworth and a web

based company in Westwoodside.

The Arrow would like to wish you

all the best for the future!

Smartest, Baa None! is an exciting

new children’s wear shop which is

launching in Epworth’s Fountain

Court on 1 May. The brainchild of Jane

Keightley - Smartest, Baa

None! will sell designer

children's clothes, shoes,

bags,

toys and jewellery for all ages from birth to 6

years. Commenting on the launch of her new

venture,

Jane says: „We aim to create a relaxed atmosphere

where customers will thoroughly enjoy their

„shopping experience‟ with brands including

Catamini, Joules, no added sugar, Timberland,

Bunnies By The Bay and Funky Feet Fashions. Jane promises that Smartest, Baa None! will be

anything but an ordinary children‟s clothes shop.

Her plans for the future include special themed

days including one with „The Gruffalo‟, seasonal

catwalk fashion shows and promotions with local

businesses.

Customers will also find an extra helping hand

when it comes to planning and buying for children‟s

birthdays, Christmas and special

occasions with 'Wish Lists' and gift vouchers avail-

able. It is clear to see that Jane is overflowing with en-

thusiasm about her new shop: „‟I feel extremely

passionate about the venture. I‟m determined to

make Smartest, Baa None! a huge success and as

I will have exclusivity of the brands I‟m stocking

within a 10 mile radius of Epworth, Smartest, Baa

None! will really be the smartest children‟s

clothes shop locally, bar none‟‟. (see page 2 for

Michael Fotheringham, a member

of the Isle of Axholme Family His-

tory Society was the speaker at

their last meeting. The subject of his talk

was „A timeline and short history of Temple Bell-

wood‟. He traced the history of the house and

lands at Belton from the initial grant through the

early Bellwoods to the Mowbrays who granted

2000 acres to the Knights Templar. It is not

known what sort of establishment the Templars‟

built. Perhaps it was just an outpost with the land

bringing in revenue. A variant of a Maltese cross is

the only survivor of the period and there is some

ancient glass in Belton church. After the suppres-

sion of the Knights Templar the land passed

through various notable families like the Vavasours

and the Popplewells eventually passing into the

Johnson family. They held it for many generations

ensuring the estate was protected by marriages

between distant relations. In the late 1800‟s it was

turned into a hotel but did not prosper. In turn it

became a Boarding house and then a boarding

school known as‟ St Paul‟s College. Many tales are

told about temple Bellwood One in particular

about a horse. Michael Fothering ham was on the

opinion that the tale related to a horse called

„Tankersley‟ which was purchased and had its name

changed to „Sir Soloman‟

An exciting day of family fun has

been announced at one of North

Lincolnshire’s highly popular tour-

ist attractions – the Old Rectory

in Epworth – with trips into the

past.

The events will be taking place later in the year as

part of the national Museums at Night Weekend –

as the Old Rectory was recently granted official

status as a museum.

“What we have planned will provide an interesting

day out for all the family, as we‟ll be providing a

series of events to appeal to all age groups,” said

Geordan Hammond, Audience Development Offi-

cer as the museum.

The day itself – Saturday, May15 – will be divided

into two sections. The first runs from 6pm until

8pm with a range of activities for families with

children. They include puppet and magic shows,

live music, balloon modelling, outside games – such

as croquet – and 18th century school lessons.

There will also be food and refreshments available.

Then from 8pm until 10pm there will be candlelit

tours of the Old Rectory – internationally famous a

the birthplace of John and Charles Wesley, who

founded the Methodist movement.

Parties of people will be led from room to room in

the elegant, three storey and Grade 1 listed build-

ing by „housemaids‟ dressed in costumes of 18th

century. In each room there will be a similarly

attired guides to explain about the room and its

significance in the Wesley household.

The candlelit tours cost £5 per person and have to

be booked in advance by telephoning the

Old Rectory on 01427 872268.

Belton in the Park will be at

Belton Playing fields on Sunday

18th July at 6.30pm Early bird tickets will be available from early May.

Whether you’re a shopaholic or a reluctant browser,

most would agree that convenience is a key word when

it comes to the charms and chores of shopping. And

what could be more convenient than the shops that are

there on our doorstop?

Don‟t pass them by as if they are somehow second rate. They are not. In fact convenience is only a

part of the story as to why they deserve our support. Here is a little food for thought...

Jumping into the car and heading for that out-of-town super store or shopping mall may seem a

good idea. But it can end up a time-wasting, costly and frustrating experience. Time, they say, is

precious. But how many hours are wasted in traffic jams, just getting to your destination – and then

driving round to find a place to park (and often having to pay for the privilege to do that, too!) In

the meantime, the pennies you think you will save turn into pounds of extra expense. Strange, but

true, most people don‟t view it that way. Why? – Because the extra expense is not shown on the

receipt of goods they buy. But it all comes out of the wallet just the same!

Another thing which is often overlooked is the cost to the environment – something which is on the

minds of a growing number of people in these days of climate changes. Unnecessary journeys simply

add to all those CO2 emissions which are threatening to choke our globe. A walk to the local

shops is healthier... and cheaper in more ways than one!

If it‟s a friendly, personal service you are after, then there‟s nothing finer than the shop on the

corner. Such attention is a tradition that has its

roots embedded in the history of each village

and hamlet in the area.

“It wasn‟t until I tried my local shops that I

realised just how much they stock,” said one

shopper. “I was amazed at the variety – and the

costs were very reasonable too.”

Epworth is up and coming,

there is such choice, a variety of

outstanding shops and just

about every month a new one

appears. As I am writing this

article ‘Smartest Baa None’,

the latest children’s clothes

shop will open its doors on

1st May!

The growth of our villages in recent years has seen an increase in facilities and business

services. But they can only survive if the people

they are designed to serve support them. Let‟s

face it, we‟d all miss them if they were not there!

Epworth Police Report

Stool Close Road, Belton – this small develop-

ment of residential properties has been subjected to re-

ports of anti-social behaviour and neighbour disputes and

reports of crime. There is a neighbourhood watch group for the area, who together with other partner-

ship agencies are working together to reduce the calls for service to the area and to identify and deal with

any offences both criminal and civil and to increase the residents‟ quality of life. The Neighbourhood

Watch group have actively sought ways to reduce crime and have taken advice on how to prevent crime

including CCTV, and Smartwater. There are no set times for this behaviour and both Neighbourhood and

incident response officers are aware and will attend this particular area. At a recent Neighbourhood Ac-

tion Team meeting the following comment was made by a resident; - “the police presence visiting the area

has had very positive results and the problems are decreasing, we are kept informed of events and what

police action has been taken. I would like to thank the police.” The police will as part of their patrols

attend the area and continue to respond accordingly.

Westgate Road, Belton- this is a particularly well used road within Belton to both residential

and business locations. There are reports of vehicles who travel along this road when they are not per-

mitted to do so because of the weight restriction in place and those that break the speed limit. Together

with out partners we are addressing the issue and an increase in roads policing officers in the area has

been requested. We have received concerns from residents about crime issues and that some residents

are establishing a Neighbourhood watch scheme which is encouraging and will be fully supported by the

Neighbourhood team. Two males have been arrested for 2 dwelling burglaries and a theft from this par-

ticular area which occurred in January 2010.

Community Engagement -: Establishing what are the issues within the

local community continued improvement in Community Engagement. One of the greatest chal-

lenges for the Local Policing Team in such a rural location is to effectively collate the concerns of all as-

pects of the community. With a significant proportion of the village‟s residents not getting actively in-

volved in community politics or activities the team have been working on other methods of engage-

ment. This has included regular school visits and attendance to local events. We have also conducted our

first „walkabout‟ surgery, where we met with local people out and about in Epworth on Thursday 25th

March between 3pm and 4pm. We have received very positive feedback regarding our hi-visibility in the

town on that day and our engagement with both businesses and the community. I would like to encour-

age anyone who is out and about on the following dates and locations to speak with us about your com-

munity.

Thursday 22nd April – 3-4pm BELTON – starting off at High Street.

Wednesday 19th May – 3-4pm – SANDTOFT including the industrial sites.

Thursday 17th June - 3-4pm EPWORTH starting off at Fieldside.

Wednesday 14th July, 3-4pm BELTON – starting off at Westgate Road.

PC Starbuck and PCSO Pearson were invited and attended on Wednesday 10th March 2010 the Wesley

Memorial Methodist Church Women‟s Network Meeting where a talk was given on „A day on the beat‟

From the article that appeared in the Epworth Bells on the 18TH March and from a letter received the talk

was a success.

PC Starbuck and PCSO Pearson will be assisting Epworth School to make sure that they attend their

church service safely on Thursday 1st April.

May 2010 at a function room at the Red Lion Public House,

Epworth and all members of the farming community on both

the central and south wards are invited to attend. This

group is building its links both with the police and other

partnership agencies and continues to work at ways of re-

ducing crime on their land. The work involves a strategy in

responding to the issues of poachers and trespassers on

farmland committing crime.

You can contact Humberside Police on 0845 60 60 222 for

non-emergency calls. If you feel uncomfortable in calling the

police with information about crime, then please consider

contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Crimestoppers

is an independent charity working to fight crime.

They can also be joined on Twitter, Facebook and Bebo or if you go onto the Crimestoppers website you

can also fill our an on-line form. When contacting Crimestoppers you do not have to give your name and

larly patrols the Central area of the Isle and will be happy to discuss any community issues with

you. Please feel free to stop and speak with him or alternatively contact either of us via 0845 60 60 222.

HOW’S YOUR HEALTH Do you suffer from stress and stress related health problems such as backache?

Headaches Hypertension Insomnia Stomach problems Depression Lack of energy.

The list goes on…… Then Qigong may help you.

The practice of Qigong as a health therapy consists of three distinct coordinated parts.

A controlled breathing pattern. Controlled physical postures and movements and a calm

and focused mental state.

I have been teaching Qigong for over 15 years and some of my students have experienced increased

mobility, increased flexibility, and higher energy levels.

Some students of Qigong have also reported that it

has helped them to reduce their stress levels

control chronic pain and helped to boost their

immune system.

The Qigong I teach is based on the therapeutic

effects of relaxation and stress relief. My approach

is to encourage everyone to participate whatever

his or her age or level of fitness. It can be practiced

sat down if your health needs require this.

It is a complimentary therapy that once learnt can

be practiced without a therapist.

And how was YOUR Easter?

Many of you know that I had a serious accident on Ash Wednesday, falling down

13 steps at a cottage we rented for half term in the New Forest. My Easter has

been very different as for the first time in over 25 years, I took no services what-

soever! Indeed I wasn‟t even fit enough to write an article for ARROW.

That‟s why I am so glad that every Sunday when we share Holy Communion, we

can celebrate Easter all over again. There may not be any chocolate eggs on view

but we still remember Jesus‟ life, His death and His resurrection – the very centre

of what Easter is all about – Sunday by Sunday in our worship.

So if you missed out on Easter this year for any reason at all, come and join us for

a joyous celebration any time at All Saints Church. Even if I am not there because

I am taking services elsewhere on the Isle, Jesus will be there with His very special

friends! I can assure you of a warm welcome.

The Isle of Axholme Where You Live Your Local History

Adapted by Anthony Catherall

THE NORMANS

In 1066 William the Conqueror became King of England after defeating Harold at the Battle of Hastings. The Normans quickly set about ruling England with an iron fist,

suppressing ruthlessly any Saxon rebellion. The lands of England were divided up

between the Norman Barons who had helped William at Hastings. The Bishop of Constance was given the estates of the Isle of Axholme amongst others. These were

passed on to his nephew, Robert de Mowbray. Later King William 11 confiscated the estates on account of Robert de Mowbray’s rebellion against him. Later they were

conferred on Nigel d’ Albini. His son Roger took the Mowbray. The Mowbray’s built a

castle at Owston Ferry. It was a mote and bailey castle with a man made hill on which the actual castle was built probably of wood. This was destroyed in 1173 after a rebellion

by the Mowbray’s. The Mowbray family became one of the most prominent in England. In 1385 Thomas de Mowbray was made Earl Marshal of England. In the Isle, Thomas had

churches built at Haxey, Epworth, Owston Ferry and Belton. He founded the Carthusian

Monastery at Low Melwood. It was known at the ‘Priory in the Wood’. The monks were not allowed to eat meat or drink anything but water.

The barons of England had despotic powers, but the Mowbray’s appear to have ruled

fairly benevolently. In 1360 John de Mowbray granted a famous deed to his tenants that gave them free use of the wastelands adjacent to each parish. This deed caused a great

deal of trouble to Vermuyden and his fellow drainage experts. It gave the tenants the

right to dig the peat, collect the tree remnants and to rate their hemp in the waters of the wastes. It was signed at Epworth on May 1st 1360 and written in French. It is now

amongst the public records in the Tower of London.

The Doomsday Book compiled in 1086 gave the Normans an idea of the kind of country

they had conquered. It gave the economic value of each of the manors and of the social standing of its inhabitants. Epworth, Haxey, Graizelound, East Lound, High and Low

Burnham, West Butterwick and Crowle are all mentioned in the Doomsday Book. It gave the value of each manor as well as the number of ploughs, oxen’s teams, and amount of

meadow and value of fisheries. The villages at this time would have been little better than a collection of hovels.

Now & Then – Then & Now No 13 by Anthony Catherall

This month and every month; see Epworth in by gone days and compare to today‟s images!

Photographs of the east side of Epworth are quite rare. Dominant in this early 1912 postcard of Hollingsworth Lane right with the Pony & Trap outside is the Old Courthouse built in 1848, unusually with two jails at the top.

Epworth Petty Sessions were held each Thursday until 1991, after which it closed and became a private residence. Further down we see a lonely figure in the road to his left in top picture was Shilitto’s yard, trading as Corn

Merchants. Coming up on the left at No.10 a little later in the 1930’s was Miss Batty her lodger Miss Agar was headmistress of the Church school. No.12 was Mr.(Bungy) West and housekeeper Miss Raper. At No.14 now

‘Court Cottage’ was Stonemason Bob Sissons many of his headstones are in St Andrews churchyard. No.16 lived Bobby Sykes and his family they were potato merchants. ‘Garth Cottage’ No. 18 Lived Mr Gagg. At 20 Mr. Bell the postman whose granddaughter still lives in Chapel Street. No. 22 now called ‘Croftside’ lived Albert Broomhead. Opposite on the right was an Orchard then owned by George Hill. This scene is almost unchanged below today,

save for the house facades and a garden of a bungalow on the right next to a path to Vinegarth.

Do you love history in your local area? Be included in the up and coming

issues of the Arrow. Send your photographs, postcards to be used in the article 'Then & Now',

(any hard copies returned) or even your views to; [email protected]

Selected photographs used in the article will qualify for a £10 voucher to spend at

Epworth Primary School News Letter

Easter Egg Decorating Competition The School hall was full of „eggciting‟ things at the end of term! There were eggs decorated with

paint and fluffy bits stuck on them. The children had entered a competition to decorate a hard

boiled egg and were very creative in decorating their eggs. Entrants were judged by parents,

grandparents and carers who came to vote and support the event.

It was a very hard job to judge the best but two winners from each class were chosen and were

presented with their chocolate egg prize in our end of term Church Service at the Wesley Church:

Comedy Duo win Epworth’s Got Talent FINAL

A full house enjoyed the Epworth‟s Got Talent show last night raising £330 for the Haiti Earthquake

Relief Fund. With the non-uniform day this has meant the school has raised £811 for this worth-

while cause.

Congratulations to Ryan Moss and Alex Mappouras, the comedy duo winners in the Final.

Well done also to 2nd placed Dan Lay and Alex Isles for their unique Takwondo demonstration and

to 3rd prize winner Lucy Edwards for her trumpet playing as well as Ella Letorey, Special Award for

her poetry reading.

Actually it is all the children taking part that are congratulated for an excellent performance proving

that indeed Epworth has talent!

Primary Music Celebration

Well done to all those children who took part in

the Primary Music Celebration on Thursday 25th

March at New Life Church in Scunthorpe. Mrs

Hodson and Mrs Taylor took 27 children to sing

with children from other North Lincolnshire Pri-

mary Schools – in all about 250 children! They all

sang their hearts out. The weeks of hard work

were worth it.

Year 5 Residential Trip

27 children from Year 5 spent 4 days at Hather-

sage in the scenic Peak district with 4 members of

staff. The group stayed at St. Michael's Environ-

mental Education centre in Hathersage during the last week of term from 29th March - 1st April.

Activities included Orienteering, Local walks, Tree

planting, a visit to Eyam and a Search and rescue

simulation. The children had a great time despite

the rain and the mud and the puddles - in fact they

seemed to enjoy the mud the most!

The children learnt about the environment of the

Peak district - the classroom was the outdoors for

the week - as well as gaining independence skills in

being away from home and working together.

THE WORLD HAS CHANGED

The world has definitely chnaged for some people--especially for

those who play Scrabble on a serious competitive basis. Many of you

will know that since its creation in 1948 the rules have excluded

proper nouns (the names of places and people) -tempting though that

might have been .

So the eligible vocabulary is being dramatically extended, and for

those of us who are challenged by the demands of this game the

world has certainly changed. The rule change will force a different way of thinking as the

new words are brought into use.

But the world has changed too for Christians-- because for them the world can never be

the same after Easter than before. Easter 2010 has been celebrated, and the day we cele-

brate as Easter is most proably the correct date, because of its link to the Jewish Passover.

For the first Christians also there was a rule change-no longer keeping the Jewish law ,

but being freed to live in the spirit of that law embodying life and love. This applies still to

us today.

For us the concern is not with proper nouns, but proper love and peace.

Words that are simple to spell, but harder to live!

Rev David Leese Wesley Manse Epworth.

Just a reminder that

the May meeting of

the Isle of Axholme

group of the

Lincolnshire Wildlife

Trust will take place

on Thursday May

6th when Natasha

Estrada will be giving

us a talk about small

mammals found in

Britain. These small creatures are often hard to

see but Natasha has been monitoring them for

several years. This should be an interesting

evening. At this meeting we will confirm the date of an

evening visit to Rush Furlong which will be

either May 12th or May 19th.

Saturday walk around the reserve at

Following our April meeting when Eddie Gaunt

gave us a talk on Messingham Sand Quarries,

we are going to visit the reserve itself on

Saturday June 5th. We will meet in the car park

at the reserve at 10am. Anyone who needs a lift

or instructions on how to get there just ring

Geoff on the number below. The walking is easy

on flat paths and there are two hides and

numerous seats so do come along and join us,

all our meetings are open to anyone; you don‟t

have to be a Trust member. This will be the last

event until we start our indoor programme

again in October.

We meet on the first Thursday of the month

from October to May at the new hall at the rear

of Haxey Methodist Chapel on Low Street

starting at 7.30pm. There is a small admission

charge of £1 and there is a raffle and

refreshments. Bird food is always on sale at the

Dear Readers,

The visibility of pedestrians at night is a complex phenomenon. A Driver can only avoid accident if

he sees a pedestrian relatively far ahead. The driver must detect the pedestrian, recognize the

impending collision, and then react by pressing the brakes. Suppose a driver is traveling at 60 mph

(88 feet per second) and suddenly sees a pedestrian. Normal reaction time is about 1.5 seconds.

During this time, the car will have moved forward 132 feet (1.5 x 88). Cars don‟t stop

instantaneously, however, so the vehicle continues forward after brake depression until friction halts

all motion. This would require another 150 feet and take about 2.8 seconds. As a result, the driver

must see the pedestrian 280 feet and 4.3 seconds in advance. At a speed of 35 mph, the stopping

distance is still 138 feet and the stopping time is 3.6 seconds. These calculations also assume good

conditions. The requirements increase when the road is wet, the vehicle is heavier (a fully loaded

tractor trailer can take 400 feet or more), the terrain slopes downhill or the driver‟s reaction time

is slowed by age, alcohol, fatigue or distraction. (Using a mobile phone.)

The driver is usually looking directly ahead. The pedestrian must be seen in peripheral vision

because there is an angle between the driver‟s direction of gaze and the pedestrian‟s location. The

pedestrian is hard to detect because people are much poorer at seeing objects off the direct line-of-

sight. The eye has lower peripheral acuity and visual attention is usually concentrated where the

viewer fixates – directly ahead. Attention becomes more focused ahead when visibility conditions

are poor or traffic is heavy

The driver will most likely detect the pedestrian only if there is an eye movement to the right or

left. This may occur by chance or if the pedestrian is highly conspicuous for some reason, but

drivers are usually looking for pedestrians only at likely locations. Drivers won‟t expect to see

pedestrians in rural roads or other areas where they have learned through experience that

pedestrians are unlikely to appear. For example,

three quarters of the pedestrians killed in road

accidents are hit outside of crossings, probably

because drivers do not expect them there.

On Friday 9th April, Michelle

Sidebottom founder of Arrow

Publications celebrated her 40th

birthday in style!

Her husband Sid organised a „Pink Stretch

Hummer‟, which travelled around Doncaster

stopping off at homes of friends, who all

welcomed her with special surprises. From

champagne, chocolate, balloons and banners

Michelle was received like royalty.

I would personally like to say a big thank you to

Michelle, without her I wouldn‟t be where I am

today working with the Arrow magazine. On meeting

Michelle I found her very kind and thoughtful; she welcomed me on board and to this day I

appreciate everything she has done for me. Not only a work colleague Michelle has also proved to

be a very special friend.

Special thanks also goes to Peggy and her team at Trax FM, who very kindly announced Michelle‟s

birthday on their radio station at such short notice.

So here is to Michelle on reaching her „landmark‟ and I am sure all the readers of the Arrow wish

her all the best.

Visitors flocked to the Axholme Camera Club for the showing of

Parry Jenkins 'Musical Mystery Tour'. Parry, of Wroot, is well known around the Isle

and his digital images are not to be missed. The show he put on was excellent and thoroughly enjoyed by

all present, especially as

appropriate music accompanied

the pictures, with Parry also

playing the piano, an added treat.

The Royal Photographic Society is

world renowned for the superb

quality of its members' work.

Members of the Club enjoyed a

show of excellent photographs

produced by the RPS Nature

Group. Their work is always

inspirational, and this is evident by

an increased number of Nature

photographs being entered in

competitions by members.

When Tony and Marjorie

Furmston of Normanton were

invited to judge the 'Ladies versus Gents'

competition they were pleased with the friendly

reception. It is one of their favourite clubs, they

say, and they are always pleased to revisit. The

Vice Chairman David Ulyett welcomed them and

explained that he was very keen on a bargain, and

here we had 2 for 1, to which Marjorie replied, '

No. BOGOF' ( Buy One Get One Free ) to

much laughter and applause. The judging was

undertaken in a more serious vein, although

interspersed with humorous anecdotes and

helpful hints and tips. The members had turned

out entries in force to try to win or defend the

title, and it was a close run thing. However, on

this occasion the Ladies pipped the Gents by

less than 1 point, with 20 points going to Helen

Turton, Edward Sabin and Alan Townsend (

twice).

Ray Brightman from Sheffield came to show some

of his work, and excellent work it was covering

many years. In fact, he said the Club was

privileged to be the one to see his final slide

show, as slides are now a thing of the past and he

has not ventured, yet, into digitally projected

images. His adventurous work with prints would

suggest it won't be long.

Meetings continue weekly through to June, when

fortnightly meetings, often outings, take place.

Anyone wishing to join in will be made welcome. Haxey Church Hall 7.30pm, alternate Tuesdays and

Wednesdays, more or less!
