Editors Letter…. As I‟m writing this it‟s the Easter

Holidays, the sun is shining and the

children are enjoying lots of playing out

in the garden. I hope this good weather

lasts and we get a lot more of it

throughout May.

Please remember to mention the

Hatfield Arrow every time you use one

of the many businesses that advertise in

it. It is with their support that the

magazine is possible every month. Also

many of them are local businesses that

need our support throughout these

harder times.

If you are a local business or if you

know of anyone who would benefit

from having their business details

published in the Hatfield Arrow, please

contact me . Advertising rates start

from as little as £20 plus vat or £30

plus vat for a 12 month entry in the

business directory. My address, phone

THE LAST VULCAN COMES TO

ROBIN HOOD AIRPORT

Don Valley‟s MP Caroline Flint has welcomed

the news that the last Vulcan Bomber will spend

the summer months at Robin Hood Airport.

Said Caroline: “Congratulations to everyone

who has run the campaign to get the Vulcan

back to Finningley. This is great news for Robin

Hood Airport and for the many people who

remember Robin Hood historic role in UK

aviation.”

POLICE CHECK VEHICLES IN

DONCASTER

Officers from the Stainforth Safer

Neighbourhood Team (SNT) carried out

an operation in February targeting scrap

metal carriers and trade type vehicles.

Officers from the SNT worked in partnership

with The Vehicle Operator Services Agency

(VOSA) over one day. Thirty-six vehicles were

checked in total, several prohibition notices

were served for defects and two vehicles were

prohibited for not being road worthy.

The owner of a Transit van was given a

prohibition notice for his vehicle until he could

produce a valid MOT test certificate as he was

suspected of fly tipping and poaching using the

vehicle. SNT officers will continue to monitor

the vehicle.

The Council Enforcement team reported two

people for not having a carrier‟s licence and one

person was investigated for working whilst

claiming benefits.

PC Sarah Barrowcliffe from the Stainforth SNT

said: “This was a successful operation with some

good results. We are continuing to run

operations like this over the coming months and

are looking to involve more partners such as

trading standards, and utilise traffic officers and

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)

facilities.”

HATFIELD - ST LAWRENCE CHURCH - IN RUINS!!

This is not a headline we'd ever want to see. Imagine what Hatfield would look like without it's

magnificent, part 12th century, Grade 1 listed Church? To quote from Nikolaus Pevsner's The

Buildings of England "St Lawrence is a surprisingly

large dominating cruciform church with a crossing

tower so big and proud that it might stand in

Somerset. The E front is particularly

impressive..." and who could argue with his

description. These days there's no Lord of the

Manor to help with the expensive upkeep of the

building and mo money what so ever is received

from the Diocese either so it's down to us locals

to look after this beautiful building and raise the

much needed funds to keep it in good repair.

In 1997 a Building Trust was formed (registered

charity no 1066647) and shortly after the Friends

of the Building Trust committee was set up, all on a voluntary basis, to act as the Building Trust's fundraising arm with an aim to invite as many

members of our community as possible (whether church goers or not) to become Friends of the

Building Trust by giving an annual donation of £5, or more if they wish. All funds raised from

donations and events are used purely for the maintenance, restoration and conservation of the

building and its grounds and as you can imagine, it's a very costly affair. For instance, the path and

drainage system around Church has recently needed replacing at a cost of £46,655 so we're looking

to expand our membership so we can complete more essential work.

If you haven't seen inside St Lawrence's please go and visit, you'll be very welcome and there are

lots of interesting things to see - St Peter's Chest, the Millennium Window and a genuine *Thomas

Crapper WC! The Church is open to visitors on Wednesdays & Saturdays from 2-4pm and

occasionally on Sundays after services and it's free entry with a free car park right outside. Ring Mr

Lister on 01302 884848 to confirm Sunday opening times. If you're unable to visit you could look at

the website www.hatfieldchurch.co.uk and if after all that, you would like to become a Friend, please

contact our Membership Secretary, Joan Brebner on 01302 840013 or pick up a form from church.

*Look out for more interesting facts about St Lawrence's in the next issues of the Arrow....

Celebration of Bob.

Over the past few months, Travis school has been anticipating the completion of our new outdoor

classroom, situated at the front of the school near the main entrance. The Year 2 children have

taken a particular interest in its construction, mainly because most of the activity has taken place outside Hedgehog class! Finally

the day arrived and, on Monday

21st March 2011, it was officially

opened and dedicated to our

much loved former site

manager – Bob Riley.

The reporters were there

along with the rest of the

school, staff, governors, past

staff, friends and family of Bob

to join in the blessing and

opening of the classroom.

At 11am, we went outside on the

field. We heard about Bob who

used to be Travis caretaker but

he was poorly and died. He was

very helpful and kind. It was a

sunny day and there were

children and Bob’s family.- Jessica.

We went outside to worship Bob’s life. We built the classroom because it reminds us of Bob all the time. Mr

Wilson did some prayers for us and Mrs Hallett told us how special Bob was and his family. –Jack.

It was a beautiful day and Bob’s wife cut the ribbon. Rev Wilson said a prayer to dedicate the outdoor

classroom to Bob. -Ben.

Jayden gave Mrs Riley the beautiful flowers and Mrs Riley cut the ribbon. We all walked around the outdoor

classroom and then we sat down and had our photograph taken. Mrs Riley stood in the middle.- Jessica.

It was a bit of squish but it was worth it. –Sam.

The outdoor classroom will remind us of Bob and is special to the school.- James.

The outside classroom is very big and can fit the whole of the school children in it. The roof

of the outside classroom is pointy and the inside looks like a spider’s web. –Yue Yang.

The outdoor classroom is an excellent resource

and has already been used for story-time, circle

time and even gardening during a very windy

planting activity! The children heard about a

greatly missed member of Travis who touched

our lives and this classroom is a fitting reminder

of the love he had for our school and the children

who attend it. We send our thoughts to Mrs Riley

and his family.

NORTH EAST DONCASTER CITIZENS

ADVICE BUREAU

Advice Column

I purchased some tickets to a music concert from what looked like a very

official website and later discovered that I got completely scammed. What do

you do if you are worried about buying tickets from bogus websites?

It is important to be aware of certain issues before making an online purchase and be confident the

site is genuine. Researching the website that you are thinking of purchasing from can help determine

how credible a site actually is.

For example it is imperative that every website has a full street address and a UK landline number,

so this is definitely worth checking.

If you are still in doubt, don‟t be afraid to ask lots of questions before you make your purchase. You

could ask: When will the ticket be dispatched and how will you be notified? You should also find out what the

company‟s policy on refunds is.

When paying for tickets online, always pay by credit card. Under the Consumer Credit Act, your

card issuer is jointly liable for the failure to provide goods or services if the cash price of a single

ticket is over £100.

If you believe that you have been a victim of scam you can report the incident to the police and get a

crime reference number. For further advice, call Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06 or visit their

website www.consumerdirect.gov.uk for information about The Just Tick It campaign, which is

running as part of Scams Awareness Month.

An INVITATION to a presentation by;

Professor Paul Connett PhD - American Health Studies

Waste Incineration

The environmental and health issues

To highlight the problems associated with incinerating waste

To raise awareness of the alternatives

The DEW project does not have to burn waste in our region

What are the alternatives to incineration – landfill is not sustainable

Professor Connett has recently spoken twice in the United Nations and in the House of

Commons about the alternatives and why for health and cost reasons, we should adopt

them.

Local residents are bringing him to our region –because it is where we live and work, we

need to know all the facts, an incinerator could be given the go ahead in our

neighbourhood.

The developers of the DEW project suggested that they wished to consult with residents,

they have been invited to make a

presentation.

An invitation to attend has also been

extended to MP‟s, DMBC decision makers

WHAT WAS NATIONAL SERVICE DAD, YES, TELL US POP?

Do you get questions like this from your children or grandchildren, probably not. I seem to remem-

ber that schools were enhancing their history lessons by inviting people to school or visiting a care

home and asking people about their lives. I don‟t know if they still do this but I think it is a good

idea.

I have come across 90 year olds with brilliant memories and sadly some 70 year olds who cannot

remember anything. My own dad told me very little about his life.

Talk about the credit crunch, in 1926 things were very very hard with strikes and people penniless.

My dad‟s dad had to close his shop as people could not pay their debts. He came from Scunthorpe

to Doncaster and worked on the railway. The railway was a huge employer, thousands worked

there. My whole family worked there. My Uncle worked on the boilers of the Flying Scotsman.

After leaving school at 17, my dad said he would get me a job on the railways too. I was an appren-

tice coach builder and I served my time, as they say, until I was 21.

Now, the Russians were at that time causing problems, so our politician decided to raise extra

Forces called National Service. We had to choose one of the services, Army, Navy or Air Force. It

was to last 2 years. As I was trained as a wood working coach builder I went to train as an Air Frame Mechanic, a metal worker really.

First thing, a medical in Sheffield, then off to Padgate Camp near Manchester to do „Square Bashing‟.

This was to make you fit and obey orders. Then it was off to RAF Stathen in South Wales to learn

my new trade. This involved filing metal hydraulics and pneumatics etc. I actually enjoyed my time

there even though it was a long way from home and my girlfriend. Pay was poor so I supplemented

my wage by becoming the camp church organist at 2/6pence each session for the three months I

was there.

Next stop was being posted to RAF Watton in deepest Norfolk. Where was this place? Well, it is in

the flattest and most boring part of Norfolk, miles from anywhere but ideal for airfields. I spent 18

months there. We had to service Lincoln Bombers which were the successors to the famous Lan-

casters.

Some lads were very bored with service life but I think you had to go out and find interests. Eve-

nings and weekends were always free so we had plenty of spare time and being a Scoutmaster I

joined the local group where I found 13 other Scouters doing the same thing. We had a great time

camping and doing gang shows etc. As I had been a choir boy I joined the local church choir and the

camp church choir. I also joined the camp concert party, where we would put on shows for the

other lads on camp. So you can see I had a busy time.

Doing National Service allowed you to see many interesting things, meet people from all parts of the

country and learn about the work they did in civy street. It certainly opened my eyes as to what you

could do with your life.

As a result, after the RAF, I left the „Plant works‟ and trained as a Teacher. It‟s a good job I did as

Doncaster is no longer a Railway town.

Some of my generation say „bring back National Service, it will do some good‟. Well maybe it would

help some of the younger people in our society today. Who knows?

T Brooke. Hatfield Woodhouse.

Hatfield Flyer Children’s Page Feature – Different Stages in Nursery

At Small World Day Nursery the children‟s learning experiences are based around their individual

developmental needs.

From the age of 3 months, babies are given new experiences according to their individual needs. At

such a young age babies learn through their senses. Sounds, smells, physical contact, singing, games

and talking to your baby are vital; as well as encouraging physical skills for crawling, standing and

walking.

Enjoying early games such as peek-a-boo, clapping and finding hidden objects will all be part of a

child‟s daily play. There will also be opportunities for one-to-one interaction with staff and other

children. We also spend sometime each day playing outside. Now and again, we take children for

little walks in buggies along the quiet roads behind the nursery.

From around the age of 12 months your child will start to experience natural materials such as

water and sand as well as discovering the pleasures of play dough, printing and brush painting- all

with close supervision of course!

From the age of 18 months your child will slowly be integrated into the toddler room where they

are taught to become more independent, they will be introduced to a wide range of arts and crafts

to develop their co-ordination and concentration. Puzzles, number games, drawing and singing will

all be part of their daily routine.

From the age of 3-5 your child will follow a curriculum of the Early Learning Goals set out by the

Government. Children at this age will be encouraged to develop all the necessary skills and

knowledge to give them an early start to their education. This is the age when true and strong friendships are built.

For more information on this please contact Small World Day Nursery on 01302 844485.

The Gunfight at the Howville Coral

On May 3rd my big brother Dave hits the big 5-0 and by

the looks of it his schoolboy hairstyle is right back in

fashion! I know it‟s hard to believe that he hitting his half century - now he has had his teeth done and finished his

Botox treatment he hardly looks a day over 48. I had

some constructive feedback from my wonderful sister the

other night who, after three glasses of vino, informed me

my articles were now far too long and so, after such

constructive criticism, I will try extra hard not to waffle.

Although Dave has had his ups and downs in life, and was

sadly dumped by Howville Estate‟s hottest property Shaz

Bennett repeatedly during the late 70‟s and early 80‟s, he

has made a fine reputation for himself as one of the best

builders in the Hatfield area. In fact the only things

remaining after he has left this mortal coil will be his new

teeth and some fine examples of brickwork around the

Hatfield area. However, all has not been plain sailing in

Dave‟s life and in the mid-70‟s he was the main

protagonist in Howville Avenue‟s answer to the Gunfight

at the OK Coral. Picture this… It was a summer‟s day in

1974 and the sun was cracking the flags. Dad was at work

when there was a loud hammering on the front door.

Mum opened up to be confronted by an angry Joyce

Tetley from the estate over the road. Although tiny in frame, Mrs T was never short in offering her

opinion and had a reputation for, shall we say, being quite a handful. It was clear from the speed and

depth of rap on the woodwork that this wasn‟t a social call and, seeking to gain an early offensive,

Joyce informed mum that our Dave had been responsible for setting fire to the back fields which had

been parched due to the hot weather. And that mum would be responsible for the payment of a fine

for the expense and damaged caused. She capped the charge sheet by accusing David of leading her

two boys astray and implicating them, wrongly, in the crime. Mum turned swiftly and with the eye of

a hawk honed in on David, who just as quickly proclaimed his innocence. Mum, in a move of panzer

precision that Ernst Rommel would have been proud of, went on the offensive. Like a well-timed

back-hand return she now aimed her own ire at Mrs Tetley, reminding her that own offspring were

hardly angels and that she should “check her facts” before making false accusations. The tactic paid

dividends as Joyce edged further away from the door with every word from mum‟s mouth until she

found herself back in the street. The final barrage saw mum warn her foe that next time she would

not be responsible for her actions if she came spreading lies again. Joyce upped sticks and

disappeared up the avenue, hostility still resonating in her eardrums as she departed. Unbeknown to

the combatants, their activity had awoken the sleepy community who were now aware there had

been a major altercation between Mrs Wright and Mrs Tetley. News spread around the estate

faster than a dose of the flu with all and sundry aware mum had flown into a rage that would only be

matched by George Foreman‟s after Muhammad Ali told him he „hit like a cissy‟ later that year when

rumbling in the jungle in Zaire. Mum walked back into the garden leaving the gathering of gossips behind her. It was at this point

David made a sensational confession. After some careful questioning from Mum, he confessed to us

all that he had indeed started the field fire and that both of the Tetley lads were innocent bystanders

to his heinous crime. David tried to temper mum‟s growing rage by claiming he had attempted to

urinate on the flames in the hope of extinguishing the fire but, crucially, he kept running out of wee

and had singed himself in his own grassy area, if you catch my drift. I will never forget the look on

mum‟s face when she realised that Joyce had been correct in her accusation and that our Dave was

Hatfield Woodhouse‟s newest pyromaniac. Our parents had always brought us up to not only

defend ourselves but also to have the humility to apologise when you were in the wrong. With this

in mind mum decided the only thing to do was take the plunge and go and visit Mrs Tetley in an

attempt to remedy the situation.

As mum walked through the estate you could cut the atmosphere with a hedge trimmer, let alone a

knife. With her focus entirely on the house at the end of the avenue, mum had an air of Burt

Lancaster (portraying the lonely law man Wyatt Earp in „Gunfight at the OK Coral) about her.

Curtains twitched like rabbit‟s noses as mum passed each house on the row while bystanders

shuffled nervously and looked at their feet to avoid her steely gaze. Conversations stopped mid flow,

birds went quiet in trees overhead and even Bomber Neil took time out from attempting wheelies

on his chopper bike. But mum didn‟t waver, intentionally ignorant of the stir around her as the

crowd anticipated a Royal Rumble between even-money favourite Mrs Tetley and the 3/1 pretender

to her crown Mrs Wright. She arrived at her destination after what seemed an age and gave the

door a determined knock. The crowd by now had gathered behind her, all determined to gain a

ringside seat. Mrs Tetley opened up with a look of both combat and horror as she demanded to

know what mum wanted now. Mum composed herself before delivering an apology of the sincerity

and honesty of a nun. She acknowledged David‟s guilt and

explained his punishment would arrive home later that evening in the shape of his father. Mum departed and walked

through the throng of people who were now demanding their

metaphorical money back. This episode is often mentioned

when the family get together and even though he tormented

me for years, our Dave is and always will be a superb brother.

How could any young lad not have admiration for someone

who would come back from Lol Harper‟s chip shop with six

bags of warm chips under his jumper, on a bike with fur lined

cow horn handlebars. I have included two pictures that sum

up my time with our Dave, one a rather fetching school

photo and the other a family picture taken prior to setting off

on our yearly camping holiday. If you look closely you will see

my dad‟s attempt at a home-made roof rack and that our Iain

is missing due to fact that he was blow drying his hair at the time.

Happy Birthday Dave, no doubt Shaz Bennett will regret the day she let you go, because even

though you wet the bed until you were 12, you have turned out to be a great bloke, a great builder,

a top brother and a great laugh. Happy Birthday David !!!

NATIONAL

VACCINATION AMNESTY

MAY 2011

WHY VACCINATE?

Half the dogs in Britain and an even greater number of cats are currently more than 4 years behind with their vaccinations! Unless properly immunised your pet is in danger of contracting several possibly fatal infectious diseases.

DOGS Unvaccinated dogs that are walked where other dogs have been are at risk from Parvovirus and Leptospirosis, the most current and widespread canine infections can be caught via contact with faeces and urine respectively. If transmitted to humans Leptospirosis (Weills Disease) can cause serious liver and kidney problems.

CATS Unvaccinated cats that go outdoors or come into close contact with other cats are susceptible to contracting deadly infections such as Feline Enteritis, Feline Leukaemia and ‘Cat Flu’ any of which could prove fatal.

Vaccination is the only way of

protecting your pet against

these serious diseases.

Evolution Animal Care is urging pet owners to take advantage of

the vaccination amnesty during May 2011 and ensure their pets wellbeing at minimal cost.

Dear readers,

If you‟ve ever been in a nodding dog passenger in a car and got out feeling a bit queasy you‟ll know

the effects of ill-timed braking. Achieving a smooth, progressive and effective braking technique will

make every drive safer and more pleasurable for everyone involved.

Braking progressively and smoothly you must develop superb observation and anticipation skills, as

this allows you to begin braking earlier should any unexpected hazards arise. Effective braking is a

skill that requires practice. You should roll the pressure onto the brake pedal progressively; do most

of the braking in the middle phase; roll off the brake; again then select the best gear to make good

progress. This method always produces the smoothest drive.

Practice this technique by attempting to produce such a smooth drive that your passengers don‟t

even realise you are braking; decelerating gradually so that the nose of the car never dips.

Well-timed braking will usually make you faster from A to B. Take timing your arrival at a

roundabout for example. Look well ahead and asses the traffic on the roundabout, then time your

arrival so that you don‟t have to stop. The cars that sped past you as you were decelerating early,

will be at a standstill trying to find first gear as you slide past and get straight back on the

accelerator.

Keep every drive as simple as possible by not overlapping braking steering and gear inputs.

Brake in a straight line.

Even with modern anti-lock brake systems (ABS), it is always best to carry out any firm braking in a

straight line before making any steering changes. Any racing driver will tell you that using your

brakes in the middle of a bend can upset the balance of the car and affect its handling.

If a situation arises that requires mid-corner braking, do so progressively to avoid locking the

wheels. Vary the brake pressure accordingly to

the road surface and conditions.
