Common life, in the family, the parish, the religious community or any other, is made up of small everyday things. This was true of the community formed by Jesus, Mary and Joseph, which reflected in an exemplary way the beauty of the Trinitarian communion. It was also true of the life that Jesus shared with his disciples. A community that cherishes the little details of love, whose members care for one another and create an in-viting and evangelizing environment, is a place where the risen Lord is present, sanctifying it according to the Father’s plan. Let us not forget that Jesus asked his disciples to pay attention to little details: that the wine was running out at a family celebration; that one of the sheep was missing; the widow who offered her two small coins; hav-ing spare oil for the lamps, should the bridegroom delay; asking the little boy how many loaves and fish he had; a fire burning and fish cooking as he waited for the disciples on the shore at daybreak.

Remembering our Mothers Mom was my greatest teacher; a teacher of compassion, love and courage. If love is sweet as a flower, then my mother is the sweet flower of love. A mothers love is priceless; it cannot be purchased, it need not be deserved. At times the strength of a mother is greater than all natural laws. Mother is the first name for God on the lips and in the heart of a child. A mother is she who can take the place of all others, but whose place no one else can take. Life comes not with a manual, but with a mother. Happy Mother’s Day!

MISSION STATEMENT

Today we celebrate Christ’s ascension into heaven and his commissioning of the disciples to carry on his mission in the world. First we hear Luke’s description of those events in the opening verses of the Acts of the Apostles. Next we hear words of encouragement and guidance from the Letter to the Ephe-sians. Finally we hear Mark’s account of the Ascension, fore-telling the mighty words and acts the Christian community would do in Jesus’ name. Together these scriptures give us a vision of the mission of the church of Jesus Christ—a mission statement of sorts. Like mission statements in our parishes and corporations, this mis-sion statement can help us set priorities and focus our activities. It can guide and support us as we strive to continue Christ’s messianic mission on earth.

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — Jesus tells the disciples that they will be wit-nesses to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:1-11).

Psalm — God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord (Psalm 47).

Second Reading — God seated Jesus at his right hand in the heavens (Ephesians 1:17-23)

Gospel — The Lord Jesus was taken up into heaven. (Mark 16:15-20).

Pope Francis’ May Intention

That the lay faithful may fulfill their specific mission, by responding with creativity to the

challenges that face the world today.

Congratulations:

To the recently baptized:

William Wynne Toups
