PASTOR’S DESK

Maxanne Sartori is probably not a name that most who are reading this Pastor’s Desk would find familiar. I had no knowledge of her either until the other night when I watched the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Maxanne’s name was brought up in an acceptance speech by Elliot Easton, lead guitarist and back-up vocalist of The Cars. During his speech, Elliot made it a point to publicly thank Maxanne for helping The Cars jump start their careers by reaching a wider audience. Maxanne, a Disc Jockey who worked for WBCN radio in Boston, was attracted to The Cars music. At that time the band was struggling to find quality air time and remained pretty much on the local scene. Maxanne took it upon herself to give quality air time to The Cars music, and because WBCN was a large radio station people outside of Boston began to take notice. It wouldn’t be long for executives from the West Coast, the South, and Midwest to come to Boston and find out more about the band that was generating a buzz in the music industry. The rest, I guess you could safely say, is history. Easton thanked Maxanne as he said, “We are forever indebted for her support in getting this thing going.” He views her as an unsung hero who saw something good in their music and supported them when they needed it most. Listening to Elliot Easton give thanks to a Disc Jockey who 40 years ago did something good for them was heart-warming. It made

me think of the people in my life who have supported me along the way3the unsung heroes who worked with me, taught me, coached me, challenged me, encouraged me, and prayed for me. Also, it made me think of the many people whom I never met that thought about me and prayed for me. I’m sure each of you reading this can think of the many unsung heroes who have made a positive difference in your life. I’m also pretty sure each of you has people whom you have never met that have supported you and prayed for you along the way. As I began to think about these people, I realized how easy it is to get caught up in the busyness of the day and not take the time (now and then) to say a prayer of thanksgiving for those who have been a part of helping to shape the person I am today, whether I can name them or not. We all need to spend more time reflecting on the gifts we have been given, especially the people for whom we are indebted3those who have touched our lives in a way that has brought goodness, hope, peace, and love. We also need to spend more time giving thanks to God for them. Peace, Fr. John

HOLY WATER

Each time we enter the church we bless ourselves with holy water. That rite is meant to remind us of our Baptism. Baptism is the way that we became part of the community of the faithful. It was our entrance into church (the people of God). It was the way that God made us God’s children; brothers and sisters of Jesus and of one another. So each time we enter the church we make that sign of our faith. The font or fonts at the entrance to the church contain holy water. It is the water that we use to renew our faith and the water we use to baptize. Those who use holy water as part of their family prayer can request water to take home.

FAITH FORMATION SESSIONS – Kdg – Gr.10 will have their last session, Sunday, May 20, at 10:00 am. We will be honoring Msgr. Thomas Snyderwine’s 50 years as a priest at this time, as well, with light receptions after the morning Masses. We hope everyone will attend this last session. AS WE “INCH OUR WAY” INTO SUMMER over the next few weeks, some of our routines will change. Our formal learning experiences will end with this academic year, but we can continue learning by choosing to live each day with intention. As we enjoy the days of Summer and many outdoor activities that can only be shared in warmer weather, these activities provide the opportunity for families to “be” with each other more. Hopefully, it will include sharing our faith with family and friends, especially our children. Consider how we might discover God and the sacred in the rhythms and practices of everyday life. God is truly present to us each day, and this presence is discovered in the fabric of our lives - our experiences, our relationships and more. We are all spiritual beings. We can discover the spiritual in our everyday lives, and recognize, understand, and respond to God’s presence in each day. Here are some daily practices to help you and your family discover God: 1. Finding God through photos.

2. Praying together: at Mass, before meals, around a campfire under the stars, at picnics, graduation and birthday parties. 3. Take a few minutes with your child before bedtime, guiding them in reflecting on their day using these questions: -- Ask them what made them happy over the past day. -- Ask them what made them sad over the past day. -- Ask them what they look forward to tomorrow. -- Remind them to thank God for what made them happy, ask for God’s help when they are sad, and pray for God’s presence in the coming day.

Let us pray for each other that we may come to realize Jesus has been accompanying us all the way and all the time. Blessings on your Journey into Summer!

6920. Someone out there is waiting to be welcomed into the faith community of St. Luke Parish. Will you be the one who extends the welcome? “SAINTLY DAYS” THIS WEEK-- May 13: the Church honors Mary as Our Lady of Fatima on this date. In 1917, in a tiny rural town of Portugal, Mary appeared to three shepherd children on the thirteenth day of six consecutive months beginning May 13. On October 13, the last of the apparitions, the children were joined by a crowd, nearing 70,000 people who witnessed what came to be called “The Miracle of the Sun.” Pilgrimages continue to come to Fatima year round. The largest crowds gather May 13 and October 13 to pray and participate in processions, during the day and at night by the light of tens of thousands of candles. Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us. May 14: St. Matthias, Apostle (first century) – Before the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the eleven remaining Apostles had the task of replacing Judas Iscariot who had committed suicide after his betrayal of Jesus. They cast lots and Matthias was chosen from among 120 disciples (see Acts of the Apostles 1:18-26).
