Somemes shopping at the supermarketcan be nancially frustrang. However,if we focus and understand the oponsthat we have to save, it doesnt have tobe overwhelming. Lets consider theseps:

Check your pantry, refrigerator andsurrounding areas to establish a list ofitems. One way to do this is by keepingclose to your refrigerator, paper or awhiteboard where you can write downwhat you need. This way you buy whatyou need without exceeding and avoidimpulsive buying.

A weekly, biweekly or monthly foodbudget is a good choice. This allowsyou to handle cash eciently and doan actual esmate of your charges.

Be careful with the buy one getone free oers, they are not always

feasible. Somemes we consume oneitem and the other expires before

    c o n s u m p t i o n ,resulng inloss of money.E v a l u a t ee x p i r a t i o ndates, thec o n d i t i o n sof the item,

    quanty and unitcost.

Opt for store brands, they are ofgood quality and many mes at areasonable price. Compare the pricesof other brands of the same productand determine which is the best choice

    for youand yourpocket.

Use discount coupons. Organizethem by date and products, it will helpwhen shopping.

Stay focused on your list. Rememberthat the purpose of the establishmentis to sell; establishments organizeproducts so that you buy thinking thatyou need a parcular item or that it isabsolutely necessary that you have it.

    Do not underesmate the oers.

Usually the products that theestablishment want you to buy is goingto be displayed at eye sight or at thereach of your hands. Check lower andupper storage and other isles withsimilar products.

Visit the establishment in days andhours that are not very busy. Being atthe supermarket for a long period willprompt you to select items that you donot really need at the me.

Do not go to the grocery store hungry. This will generate anxiety and you willend up buying everything you see, even without needing it.

    Compare priceof items in other

locaons. Somemescreang two sets of shopping liststo compare price reducons isfeasible, but selecng more thantwo establishments in the end isnot necessarily a savings. Esmatewhether me spent, eort, and fuelwill outweigh the savings.

Plan meals, this will help rotate andconsume what is in your refrigeratorand pantry. This will allow you to useyour budget to vary food seleconsdepending on the available oers and

help you plan porons, making gooduse of your current resources.

Opt for foods that are in season. These prove to be less expensive, compare.

Eat healthier and promote homecooked meals. This will encourage youto create family acvies which in theend will result in extra savings.

Remember that the end result of anyfood that is not consumed will result inmoney in the trash; lets put back thesavings in our pocket.

    En ocasionesel visitar els u p e r m e r c a d opara hacerlas compraspuede sereconmicamentefrustrante. Sinembargo, si nosprogramamos yentendemos lasopciones que

    tenemos paraalentar nuestra

economa, no ene que ser una tareaagobiante. Consideremos estosconsejos:

She was dressed with a friar tuck andtab collar. At a business fair and withmuch excitement, Missionary IleanaRoman, shared of her new ministryGuerreros de Luz (Warriors of Light).

There was a table with yers, folders, business cards and a team who wasrecruing volunteers for their SummerFamily Fesval.

Ileana Roman is from Guaynabo,Puerto Rico and is an educator byprofession. She has a Bachelors degreein Special Educaon from the AmericanUniversity in Bayamon, PR. She alsoholds a Bachelors in Speech Therapyfrom the Carlos Albizu University inSan Juan, PR. Prior to these studies,Ileana received an Associates degreein Dental Technology from RamirezCollege in Hato Rey, PR. Ileanaarrived to Rochester in 2001 when sheaccepted to work for the Rochester

City School District (RCSD) as a SpeechTherapist and later as a Special Edteacher. During this me she recallshow challenging it was to adjust toa new country, a new language andwithout any family support.

The rst few weeks were parcularlyvery dicult as Ileana had to leaveher 2 children in Brooklyn while shelooked for a place to stay, furnish herapartment and nd transportaon. Sheexperienced rsthand what it was to behomeless and the trials and tribulaonone has to endure during this period.Ileana only had $100 to get herselfseled in the US; bread and water wasliterally all she could aord for about 2

weeks. Beginnings were tough but thesun would shine her way; her desire tosucceed, overcome barriers and herstrong faith in God were her movaon. To this day she is very grateful to herrecruiter, Rebecca Torres-Linch whowent beyond her means to assist herin geng a bed, sheets, blankets andthe basic necessies of a home. Soonaer, her children reunited with her.

Ileana connued to adapt to a newculture and honed on new languageskills. One of her personal learningtools was keeping a notebook close bywhere she would write English wordsand phrases that she did not fullyunderstand. She would then plug them

to the internet to nd their meaning. She also met a Chilean teacher whobecame a good friend and ally andpushed her to the extreme so that

    she couldlose the fearof speakingE n g l i s hf l u e n t l y .

Elena Escosis now reredfrom theRCSD butwas a greatinuence inthe life ofIleana duringher rst yearsas a teacherin Rochester.

As ane d u c a t o r ,Ms. Romansays thatin actuality it was she who learnedfrom her students. Eventually, 5 years

had gone by and Ileana was beingrecognized by her peers, students andparents for her strength in characterand her relentless dedicaon. Sheloved her job teaching and learning, and has fond memories of her meat Freddie Thomas when she workedpredominantly with African Americanhigh school seniors. She recalls howpaent and helpful they were to herdespite many sharing of their toughand challenging upbringing. Ironically,Ms. Roman was teaching a foreign classwhich in turn helped strengthened herskills -- English as a Second Language.

While shes always loved teaching, she also loves reaching out to

people. Perhaps because of her ownexperiences, she has a keen interestfor the homeless and the destute.A worker from a non-for-protorganizaon appreciated her heart forpeople and approached her one day.She was asked to consider working as aResidenal Counselor. Before she knewit, Ileana accepted the opportunity andsoon grew within the organizaon. She was promoted to Manager, thenbecame a Supervisor and lastly workedas a Director of 5 programs before theposion was closed due to budgetcuts. Ileana has proven that she is asurvivor and a hardworking humanbeing. She currently works as anInventory Associate where she travels

to Albany and other bordering ciesbut it was during her tenure in the non-prot organizaon where her love forpeople grew stronger and where her

    calling to bea missionaryresurfaced.

    r e c e n t l y ,I l e a n aRoman wasa p p o i n t e dand anointedby her pastor,Mark Cuevas,( I g l e s i aM i n i s t e r i ode Fe VidaA b u n d a n t e#2) to do thework of theministry as amiss ionary.She has

eagerly accepted the task at hand andsees Rochester as an open missions

eld. She does not feel she has totravel to far-away countries to tacklethe needs she has seen rsthand sinceher arrival in Rochester 12 years ago.She saw it through her students, shesaw it through her clients and sheexperienced it herself. Poverty strikes, homelessness is real, peoples needsare tangible.

With this new endeavor, MissionaryRoman along with a team of 5 others(see photo) founded the ministryGuerros de Luz. Living without anykind of support, without food, withoutclothes is a very dark place to be in. Luzmeans light in Spanish -- they intendto bring a lile sunshine in the midst

of darkness. They are not wasngme, their vision is clear help theneedy; assist the homeless. They haveorganized themselves to support alocal shelter by providing cooked mealsand providing of their me to revitalizesouls, bringing hope and new life. Theysupport and are welcome at House ofMercy, a shelter intended to meet theneeds of the homeless in the city. Sinceits opening in 1985 people connue toood in with real needs but there couldnever be enough volunteers to assist, the need is that great.

Guerreros de Luz at the direcon ofMissionary Ileana Roman are also

thinking ahead. They plan to followthe mandate of Isaiah 58:7 sharethe food with the hungry, give shelterto the homeless, give clothes to thosewho need them, and not turn away

from humanity. They understandthat this is not a task they can doalone. Remarkably, since they startedto spread the word and share theirmission, many other organizaons, agencies, and individuals have agreedthat vagrants cant be omied anylonger. She says, Homelessness isin our back yards and real peopleare suering. Ileana is real excitedto share that musicians, designers, realtors, barbers, caterers, communityleaders and other individuals havestepped up to support and partnerup with Guerreros de Luz. She is alsoproud that Lanos are taking a stand tohelp not only other Lanos but peopleperiod.

The group is registered with the PuertoRican Parade to march on August 3.Guerreros de Luz will also host theirrst fundraiser, a Family Fesval at500 Simpson Road on August 31. Itwill include live music, many dierentkiosks (coon candy, popcorn, nachos, hamburgers, hot dogs, pina colada, etc) a bouncy house, face painng,Spanish food by Maria AngelicasCatering and more! Space will belimited and donaons will be accepted.People are encouraged to makereservaons by calling (585) 286-7175.

From teacher to social worker tomissionary, Ileana Roman is a strong

Lana lled with compassion and love. She has broken language barriers andwith great respect says, Lets not losefaith on people. Do not fear peopleLets unite as one human race to ghtagainst poverty and help the needy.Lets believe together the promises ofGod to heal and restore.

Without a doubt her new mission hasbegun.

games such as Uno, Simon Says, HulaHoops and Connect Four? Do you missthat environment?

Well Orlando and Denishea Orz isgiving Rochester adults the chance tobe a kid again. PlayDate Rochester willbe launched May 25th at the DiplomatParty House. It will be a night lledwith music, food, dancing and gamesfor adults looking for a fun and friendlynight out.

Orlando Orz, president of the PuertoRican Fesval said, Its my wifeand I doing this. We went to one in

Detroit a few years ago and we sawthe excitement it brought and thelevel entertainment and we thoughtit was something that was lackingin Rochester community, especiallyfor that demographic or that maturecrowd and that professional crowd.

PlayDate Rochester will provide anenvironment where people; single ormarried, in their 20s or in their 50s, canget a genuine interacon that breaksdown the barriers typically found at a

bar or nightclub. It oers several oldfashioned games at an aordable pricesuch as Dominoes, Spades, Scrabble,

Checkers, Taboo, Twister, Jenga,Monopoly, and more.

Its not like a regular club night or barnight. Its dierent to where peoplethat dont typically go out on theweekends because they dont want togo to a bar or a club, would go out to aPlayDate event, Orz said.

This is the rst me that a PlayDateevent will be in Rochester. Orz saidhe isnt sure how many mes this even

PlayDate was rst launched in Atlanta in2005. Since then, it has been launchedin over 30 cies around the U.S. Orzhas founded the RocON Times brandand partnered with PlayDate USA forthis event. Los Cetros de Cdo Dro sfre debdo a la dsmc de fodosWASHINGTON (AP) This may bethe year Congress decides what todo about the millions of immigrantsliving illegally in the U.S. Aer yearsof gridlock, there are ideas whizzingall around Washington.

For now, all eyes are on an 844-page Senate proposal with the you-said-a-mouthful tle of the BorderSecurity, Economic Opportunity andImmigraon Modernizaon Act of2013.

Look for the Senate JudiciaryCommiee to take its rst votes onthe legislaon on Thursday.

Whats in that bill? Is there a Plan B?And who are all these immigrants, once you get past the big roundnumbers?

A big dose of facts, gures and otherinformaon to help understand thecurrent debate:

    whY Now?

Major problems with U.S. immigraonhave been around for decades.

President George W. Bush triedto change the system and failed.President Barack Obama promisedto overhaul it in his rst term butnever did. In Obamas second term, hes making immigraon a priority, and Republicans also appear ready todeal.

    whY the New CommitmeNt?

Obama won 71 percent of Hispanicvoters in his 2012 re-eleconcampaign, and he owes them. Lastyears elecon also sent a loudmessage to Republicans that theycant ignore this pivotal vong bloc.

Its been the kind of breathtakingturnaround you rarely see in polics.Plus, theres growing pressure frombusiness leaders, who want to makeit easier for the U.S. to aract highlyeducated immigrants and to legallybring in more lower-skilled workerssuch as farm laborers.

    whats the ProBlem?

Talk about comprehensiveimmigraon reform generallycenters on four main quesons:

What to do about the 11 million-plus immigrants who live in the U.S.without legal permission.

How to ghten border security. How to keep businesses fromemploying people who are in the U.S.illegally.How to improve the legalimmigraon system, now soconvoluted that the adjecveByzanne pops up all toofrequently.

    whats the GaNG oF eiGht?

A group of four Democrats andfour Republicans in the Senate thatcraed a bill to address all fourquesons. In a nutshell, this proposalwould ghten border controls, allowmore high-and low-skilled workers tolegally immigrate, require employersto verify their workers have legalstatus, and create an opportunity forthose who are in the U.S. illegally toeventually become cizens.

    is there a PlaN B?

    And C and D.

Obama has his own backup plan incase congressional talks fail, but hesgiven his support to the Senate bill asa worthy compromise.

In the House, Republican Rep.Bob Goodlae, the head of theHouse Judiciary Commiee, sayshis commiee will tackle the mainimmigraon issues one by one, instead of starng with a singlesweeping bill. Separately, theresa biparsan House group workingon legislaon. Obama says he willkeep an open mind about the variousproposals, but the nal deal has toaddress all the big issues.

    ComiNG to ameriCa

A record 40.4 million immigrants livein the U.S., represenng 13 percent ofthe populaon. More than 18 million

are naturalized cizens, 11 millionare legal permanent or temporary

residents, and more than 11 millionare in the country without legalpermission, according to the PewHispanic Center, a private researchorganizaon.

Those in the U.S. illegally madeup about 3.7 percent of the U.S.populaon in 2010. While overallimmigraon has steadily grown, thenumber of immigrants in the U.S.illegally peaked at 12 million in 2007.

    where From?

Twenty-nine percent of the foreign-born in the U.S., or about 11.7 millionpeople, came from Mexico. About 25percent came from South and EastAsia, 9 percent from the Caribbean,8 percent from Central America, 7percent South America, 4 percentthe Middle East and the rest fromelsewhere.

The gures are more lopsided forimmigrants living here illegally:An esmated 58 percent are fromMexico. The next closest gure is 6percent from El Salvador, says thegovernment.

    where to?

California has the largest share ofthe U.S. immigrant populaon, 27percent, followed by New York, NewJersey, Florida, Nevada, Hawaii andTexas, according to the MigraonPolicy Instute, a private groupfocused on global immigraon issues.

California has the largest share ofimmigrants in the U.S. illegally, at 25percent, followed by Texas with 16percent. Florida and New York eachhas 6 percent, and Georgia has 5percent, according to the Departmentof Homeland Security.

    GoiNG GreeN

Is there an actual green card? Indeedthere is.

Its the Permanent Resident Cardissued to people who are authorizedto live and work in the U.S. ona permanent basis. In 2010, the

government redesigned them to addnew security features and make

    them green again.

The cards had been a variety ofcolors over the years. New greencards are good for 10 years for lawfulpermanent residents and two yearsfor condional residents.

    the a-word

Nothing srs up a hornets nest liketalk of amnesty for immigrants whoare in the country illegally, althoughtheres a lot of disagreement overhow to dene the term.

A 2007 eort to overhaul theimmigraon system, led by Bush, failed in part because Republicanswere dismayed that it included aprocess to give otherwise law-abidingimmigrants who were in the countryillegally a chance to become cizens.Crics complained that would beoering amnesty.

All sides know it s not praccal to talkabout sending 11 million-plus peopleback to their countries of origin. Soone big challenge this me is ndingan acceptable way to resolve thestatus of those who are in the countryillegally.

Backers of the Senate bill stress thatthose who are in the country illegallywould have a longer and moredicult path to cizenship undertheir plan than would immigrantswho followed all the rules.

    A few Census Bureau snapshots:

In 1960, there were fewer than 1million people in the U.S. who wereborn in Lan America. By 2010, therewere 21.2 million.

In 1960, 75 percent of foreigners inthe U.S. came from Europe. By 2010,80 percent came from Lan Americaand Asia.

In 1960: 47 percent of the foreign-born lived in the Northeast and 10

percent in the South. By 2010, 22percent lived in the Northeast and32 percent in the South.

    worKers

How do immigrants who are in theU.S. without permission t into thenaons jobs picture?

In 2010, about 8 million wereworking in the U.S. or trying toget work. They made up about 5percent of the labor force, accordingto Pew. Among U.S. farm workers, about half are believed to be in thecountry illegally, according to theGovernment Accountability Oce.

Business groups want a system tolegally bring in both more highlyskilled workers and more lower-skilled workers such as agriculturallaborers. The idea is to hire morewhen Americans arent availableto ll jobs. This has been a sckingpoint in past aempts at immigraonoverhaul. Labor groups want anysuch revamped system to provideworker protecons and guardagainst displacing American workers.Current temporary worker programsare cumbersome and outdated.

The Senate bill would establishan agriculture worker visa system

and create more visa programs for

high- and low-skilled workers. Farmworkers already here illegally wouldbe able to qualify for green cardsaer ve years if theyd alreadyworked in agriculture in the U.S. fortwo years and if they kept working inthe industry.

    emPloYers

Current law requires employers tohave their workers ll out a form thatdeclares them authorized to work inthe U.S. Then the employer needs to

verify that the workers idenfyingdocuments look real. But the lawallows lots of dierent documents, and many of them are easy tocounterfeit.

The government has developeda mostly voluntary employmentvericaon system called E-Verify,which has gradually goen beer. But so far just 10 percent ofemployers are using it, according tothe Migraon Policy Instute. Thesystem is now required in varyingdegrees by 19 states.

The Senate proposal would requireall employers to implement it within

    four years.

    Families Vs. JoBs

A big queson in the immigraondebate centers on how much priorityto give to the family members of U.S.cizens and permanent residents.

Under current law, the U.S. awardsa much larger proporon of greencards to family members than toforeigners with job prospects here.About two-thirds of permanentlegal immigraon to the U.S. isfamily-based, compared with about15 percent that is employment-based, according to the Migraon

Policy Instute. The rest is largely

    humanitarian.

Some policymakers thinkemployment-based immigraonshould be boosted to help theeconomy. Advocates for familieswant to make sure any such acondoesnt come at the expense ofpeople seeking to join relaves in theU.S.

The Senate plan would preventcizens from bringing in siblingsand would allow them to sponsor

married sons and daughters onlyif the children were under 31. Itwould raise the cap on visas forhigh-skilled workers, create a startupvisa for foreign entrepreneurs, and set up a new merit visa thatwould award points to prospecveimmigrants based on their educaon,

employment, length of residence inthe U.S. and other factors.

    who Cares?

For all the aenon being devotedto immigraon right now, its not thetop priority for most people, evenfor most Hispanics. It ranked 17th ona list of policy priories in a recentPew Research Center poll. AmongHispanics, one-third said immigraonwas an extremely important issueto them, behind such issues as the

economy and jobs, educaon andhealth care.

    Bi e los os

Al criarmeen una casapobre y con

    padres queq u i s i e r o ndarnos a mis

Growing up in a poor household andwith parents that wanted to give mysiblings and I everything they didnthave; we were taught not to letanything go to waste and this includedfood. My father, who growing up wasextremely poor, would tell us to eateverything on our plate because wenever knew where our next meal wouldcome from. Although this was hisexperience but not necessarily mine,it taught me poor eang habits that Isll struggle with today. Therefore, Iunderstand rst hand the importanceof teaching our young children healthyeang habits and how as adults weplay a big part.

With the dramac increase in childobesity, having and maintaining ahealthy weight is extremely importantfor young children. According toan arcle in the American Journalof Health, a naonal cohort studyof infants and toddlers found thatnearly one-third of US children wereoverweight or obese at 9 months and2 years old. Infant weight status wasstrongly associated with adult weightstatus. In other words, overweight atinfancy most likely will lead to possiblehealth problems that can last intoadulthood.

Every child needs a certain amount offat in his body to funcon at its best;however, too much or too lile fat canaect a childs health. So how much fatis too much? Body Mass Index, beerknown as BMI is one assessmentto use to measure body fat. BMI isrecommended when screening foroverweight and obese children and isconsidered a reliable indicator of bodyfatness for children and teens. Age,gender, genecs and ethic background,

physical acvity and family history areother factors to consider.

Boys are considered obese if they have25 percent of body fat or higher. Ifbody fat is in the range of 21 to 25, itis considered overweight and a healthybody-fat percentage is consideredbetween 9 and 15 percent. For girls, obesity is dened as body fat of 32percent or higher and overweight asbeing between 22 and 31 percent. Therecommended healthy range for girlsis between 14 and 21 percent. Keepin mind that children are constantlygrowing and changing in weight. Achilds physical and athlecs acviesand energy level can alter their BMI tohigher or lower ranges, but can sll beconsidered healthy.

Interesng enough I recently heardDr. Jose Acevedo, President and CEOof Finger Lakes Health, speak on theAordable Care Art and its impact onLanos. Dr. Acevedo shared a provokingthought: if we are the largest growingpopulaon with the highest growinghealth risk, where will we be by 2023?So as parents and caregivers, what canwe do to help our children grow to behealthy adults and live the longest lifeexpectancy?

One place to start is by educangourselves on the risk involved withbeing overweight or obese, and takingyour childs BMI seriously. Talk withyour pediatrician about maintainingyour childs healthy weight. Involve yourchild in physical acvies and providehealthy and nutrional meals. Increaseyour childs intake on fruits, vegetablesand water. Yet most importantly, leadby example. Remember you are yourchilds rst teacher and best advocate.

Warre or Rchards Choose The Lesser of Two EvlsFirst of all, let me be clear... Its no secretthat I am not a fan of Rochesters currentMayor Thomas Richards. Ive been veryvocal with my opinions of him.

My main bone of contenon withRichards is his corporate 1% disconnectwith minories and lower incomeresidents in Rochester. In fact, I nd itdisingenuous that right before Richardsstepped down as CEO of RochesterGas and Electric (RG&E), he receiveda buyout of more than $10 million;while hundreds of RG&E workers, withfamilies to feed, got laid o.

Aer former Rochester Mayor RobertDuy jumped ship and abandonedmy city for personal gain to becomeGovernor Andrew Cuomos right handman as Lt. Governor, Richards wasappointed mayor and later was electedmayor in a special elecon.

And now, what I predicted well overa year ago, is happening. CouncilPresident Lovely Warren has announcedthat she will be running for Mayor.

Not only do I NOT support LovelyWarren, but I will do everything I canto inform, and educate the Rochestercommunity on why they should NOTvote for this woman.

    Allow me to explain why.

As a young child in the 1980s, I feltproud as I watched my dad, MarioVara - a Cuban nave who was veryacve in the Rochester community inthe ght against police misconductand corrupon. He challenged publicocials to be accountable to thepeoplethe ones who elected them. One of the issues my dad challengedwas the lack of a TRUE civilian reviewboard in Rochester, one with teeth andreal subpoena power.

Fast forward almost a quarter centuryand as an acvist exposing policemisconduct and corrupon (connuingmy dads work) Im sll calling for aTRUE civilian review board.

In 2011 - shortly aer the Emily Goodincident - the Rochester womanarrested by Rochester Police OcerMario Masic aer she video-recordedMasic conducng a racially-proledtrac stop of an African-Americanmotorist in front of her home, I spokein front of Rochester City Council onceagain calling for a civilian review boardwith subpoena power to oversee theRochester Police Department (RPD)as well as invesgate cases of policebrutality and misconduct.

    As is common, speakers, including

myself, went over the alloed 2 minutespeaking limit they are given. The only

dierence was that when I went over, byjust 10 seconds, City Council PresidentLovely Warren ordered the me keeperto turn my microphone o. LovelyWarrens acons that evening solidiedfor me what I had already known foryears -- that she and other electedocials, such as City Councilman AdamMcFaddenanother minoritydo notcare about cizens. In fact, many ofthem have completely sold out theirown community and their own people,

just like Adam McFadden did whenhe walked through Rochesters innercity, poverty stricken neighborhood, asking African-American families whoare struggling just to eat, to vote for amillionaire mayor.

Lovely Warren prevenng me fromnishing my speech is not the reasonwhy I dont support her. Its muchmore than that. As a black womanin Rochester, Lovely Warren has notspoken out or denounced incidentsinvolving RPD ocers proling, harassing, abusing, and in some casesexecung minories, especially African-Americans like herself. Lovely Warrenhas not denounced the injusces andatrocies commied by members ofthe RPD.

In fact, Rochester residents will be hard

pressed to list anything that LovelyWarren has done since being elected to

Rochester City Council in 2007, and sincebeing elected as City Council Presidentin 2010. If elected as Mayor, LovelyWarren will be another Bill Johnson, who ran on his Blueprint for Change, promising voters the world, thencompletely selling out and betraying thevery same people who put him in oce.

Its me for the Rochester community, especially African-Americans andLanos to nally wake up and realizethat your vote is precious!

Your vote is power! Dont waste it onsomeone who really doesnt care aboutyou.

Theres a Spanish saying that goes, mejor conocido que por conocer, which basically translates to beersomeone one you know than someoneone you dont. Personally, I wouldntvote for Richards, or Warren, but Iunderstand you may ask; ok so whoshould I vote for?

Your choice may have to be the lesserof two evils. Aer all, at least withRichards, we already know what weregeng: a white millionaire who doesntcare about minories. Beer than ablack woman who feels the same way.

Danilo* tells us that before recognizingthat he had a mental health problem,he used to do a number of thingsthat made no sense. Breaking thingswithout anyone seeing him, throw

temper tantrums in which he threwthings, had mood changes in a maerof seconds, when he liked someone he used to be obsessed with them tothe point that people did not want to

deal with him anymore, or the extremewas experimenng sexually withpeople that he met on the same day.

Danilo used to perform violent actssuch as hing things and screaming. He also recognizes that he used toover-analyze everything, he wouldgo through paranoia and he would

become obsessed with programs andother things. Compulsive lying wasnormal for him, even when he had noneed to lie. It was in his second suicideaempt when he decided to seek forhelp.

Hey, but Im not crazy!, Is one of themost common phrases that we hearwhen we talk about seeking help with afamily member; You are the crazy one!Is the classic response of paents, says Josene Vzquez of the MentalHealth Associaon of RochesterChapter (MHA). She adds, It is verydicult to convince a person that has amental health problem. It is especiallychallenging for families and loved ones,

because according to the paent, thecause of the problem is the family not

    them.

Vzquez claries that the wordcrazy is misused. If youre trying toaccept that you have a mental healthproblem, do not tell yourself that youare crazy. With the right treatment andtherapy, you will be able to have anordinary life. If you think about it, the

supposed normal are living stressed, suering all kinds of anxiety disorders, taking medicaon to sleep, and all thatwithout a good medical treatment. Now I ask, who is crazier the one thatrecognizes that something is wrongor the one that hides its problems byforce of legal drugs, without therapy ormedical support?.

As much good intenons you may have, the only thing that can help a familymember is a directed and controlledtreatment by a psychiatrist, saysKarla.* I dont know the whereaboutsof my sister. I le home a year ago living with her was chaoc, she neveraccepted that she had a problem. One

day she was the best sister, and thenext day she was a very dierent being,

    He, bt im ot cra!

Dr. Rosa Montero from Spain, whois a consultant for the Central-American Psychiatric Associaon

says: Please lets not add more painwith our prejudices, to the intensemental illness. Psychosis is a seriousand chronic condion but if its welltreated and well integrated into itssurroundings, paents can praccallylive a normal life. The downside is thatthese circumstances, good treatment, good integraon, occur infrequently, precisely because society rejects thembecause it degrades and prevents themfrom being human beings. Right awaywe call them crazy.

In my opinion, the mass media is oneof the most responsible for Lanos andimmigrants to have many prejudices inthis area. When an incident occurs the

media saturates the audience so longthat, it would seem that the miscalled

crazy constute a major threat to oursociety.

So much negave publicity has madethis issue even more dicult in the

process of accepng and recognizingthat someone has a mental healthproblem. Every day people who aresupposedly normal commit horribleacts: men who beat their wives todeath, pedophiles who abuse children, laborers bashing immigrants andpunishing them to forced labor. Thisis just to menon only a few crimes ofnormal people.

In Rochester we have the advantageof having an eecve and accessiblemental health system like the PeerCoaching Service and CreaveWellness Workshop. At Marn LutherKing School # 9 they provide a programin Spanish for the whole family called

Family Roundtable held on thefourth Thursday of each month from

12:00 to 1:30pm. Childcare is providedif reserved by calling (585) 325-3145.All these programs are oered by MHAto those who need it and when theyneed it.

There is another program to helpcontrol temper tantrums aimed atprimary school children called TemperTamers; this program focuses onearly intervenon and consists of veweeks of anger management. Thereare two sessions every Saturday: thepromoon of wellness and recoveryand recognion of diversity supporngpeople who care for someone who hasa disease.

The crazys face our problems; wemake great eorts to live with what wehave. We learn to live again knowingthat we will fall and get up many mesin life, but we look face to face at the

disease, we dont give up and pretendnothing is happening, says Danilo.

Lets make an eort to change ourmindset and stop marginalizing thementally ill. Failing to stoke up fear,as it happens whenever an incident

occurs, and oer a real possibility ofsocial integraon.

There are many more familydevelopment programs andeducaon promotes by MHA. Formore informaon and to register call(585) 325-3145, ext. 131 MHA hasa Spanish-speaking team, they arelocated at 320 N. Goodman Street,Suite 202. They oer program supportfor the whole family.

El cuentode hoy tienemuchas cosasque sonreales. Hace

ayude a leerlo.

mariposas monarcas haban hecho.
