May 15, 2016– Pentecost Sunday
Solemnity Feast Day Of Pentecost
Messenger Of Good TidingsMessenger Of Good TidingsMessenger Of Good TidingsMessenger Of Good Tidings; You shall be to me a kingdom of priests, a holy nation, (Exodus
19).
Do you have a portrait of your whole family smiling at the
camera hanging in your house? Looking and reflecting on
the portrait of my family reminds me of how perfect it is
to see the smiles on everyone’s face. How amazing it is to
gather together, laugh together, and be very happy to see
one another. The love we have and the bond of
togetherness of being a family forever!
You may say, “Perfect?” Yes, apart from the picture in
reality of life, a member of a family falter or not nearby
perfection. And yet, despite these differences, we are still
a family. We still love each other.
On this Solemnity Feast of Pentecost, Jesus came and
appeared to His family. His family is made up of apostles
and disciples with different personalities. Most of them
were not perfect, but as time goes on, they were made
outstanding members.
On this Feast of Pentecost, Jesus came to us, as He did to
His Apostles, commissioned and entrusted to us His
inheritance, “You will be my messenger to all parts of the
earth….You shall be to Me a kingdom of priests, a holy
nation,” (Exodus 19:3-8a, 16-20b).
On the other hand, St. Paul also reminds those who belong
to the family of Jesus that we are all receiving the gifts of
the Holy Spirit. Sounds like what we receive from the
Sacrament of Confirmation. God produces all these gifts
in all of us so that as baptized members of His Church, we
will bring in to each other and the world the gifts of His
love and hope.
The Holy Spirit imparted on the Church His gifts to
empower each member for its mission on this Solemnity
Feast of Pentecost. It strengthens and empowers us-the
Church, to be witnesses, members to testify to Jesus’ life
and ministry in the world. St. Paul, in his letter to the
Galatians mentioned the fruits that come from the gifts of
the Holy Spirit: “….the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy,
peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control,” (Galatians 5:16-25).
Remember, keep smiling and keep loving, let the living
portrait of God’s family permeate its radiance to love, to
proclaim, to heal, and be Jesus’ disciples to each other and
to the world.
Therefore, illuminate and enlighten with the gifts our Lord
Jesus has given us by the Holy Spirit, we are sent to be messengers of good tidings in the world. We are witnesses
to testify to the mission of our Lord and God in our
families, His Church, and the world to bring faith, truth,
peace, and love to the world who is in desperate need of it.
ALLELUIA, AMEN!

Pentecost Sunday In the United States military, the Judge Advocate General's
Corps (JAG) is the legal branch concerned with military
justice and military law. Judge Advocates can serve as legal
advisers to commanders. They can also act as prosecutors in
courts-martial, or serve on the defense team. The first en-
counter many people had with this branch of the service was
through the television series JAG that began in 1995 and
aired on CBS through 2005. For ten seasons viewers fol-
lowed the exploits of military lawyers in plots that occasion-
ally stretched credulity. The next general exposure of the
Judge Advocate General's Corps to the public was through
the military commissions set up to bring to trial those who
were interred at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Unlike the televi-
sion series, the JAG officers in this setting were deadly seri-
ous about their duties. Whether for the defense or the prose-
cution, they were determined to show the face of justice.
The Gospel for this weekend is a bit of a reprise from that of
two weeks ago. Again we hear Jesus promising to send an
Advocate who will be with us always. That Advocate is the
Holy Spirit whose coming upon the church we celebrate this
day. This Advocate is also serious about his duties. The
Holy Spirit doesn't wear a uniform or carry a briefcase. We
won't see the Spirit saluting or reciting the Pledge of Alle-
giance. As Advocate, the Holy Spirit teaches us the ways of
Christ and opens our hearts to his message.
In their role as adviser, defender, or prosecutor, Judge Advo-
cates are there to explain the law and hold others account-
able to it. We heard just a few weeks ago that the law that
Christ gave to his disciples is to love one another, a com-
mand reiterated in today's Gospel when Jesus tells his disci-
ples to keep his word. As advocate, the Holy Spirit, dwelling
in our hearts, will hold us accountable to Christ's law of
love.

"And I will ask the Father and he will give you another Advocate
to be with you always." Pentecost fulfilled this promise. The Holy
Spirit came upon the apostles and nothing was ever the same
again.
This event is often referred to as the "birthday" of the church. It
took Pentecost--and the power of the Spirit--to embolden the
apostles to begin their ministry of preaching and baptizing. Con-
versions began to happen and the early church began to grow.
And all of this took place without Jesus' earthly presence among
them.
This is one of the most encouraging elements of the practice of
our Christian faith. We believe that through the Holy Spirit, God
dwells within us and empowers us. We believe that even though
we never walked with Jesus and the apostles, we are nonetheless
accompanied by the same Spirit who is always available to us!
We only need to stir up this Spirit within our souls by praying
sincerely, "Come, Holy Spirit!"
The special hymn of today's feast, called the sequence, does just
this. It also expresses well the package of "benefits" that come
from the presence of the Advocate among us: "You, of comforters
the best; You, the soul's most welcome guest; Sweet refreshment
here below; In our labor, rest most sweet; Grateful coolness in the
heat; Solace in the midst of woe." And not only do we receive
these personal blessings, but the Church herself also receives a
tremendous gift. As Jesus said, "The Advocate, the Holy Spirit...
will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you." It
is only through this divine guidance from on high that the Church
has the power and privilege to teach and guide us who are still
here below.
