MASS TIMES ST IGNATIUS Toowong: Weekdays 5.30pm every afternoon; Saturday 9.00am & 6.00pm (Vigil); Sunday 7.00am & 5.00pm. Reconciliation: Saturday after 9.00am Mass and from 5.15pm to 5.45pm, or by appointment. HOLY SPIRIT Auchenflower: Weekdays 9.00am Monday, Wednesday & Friday; Sunday 8.30am. For the gospel text we return to Jesus’ words of farewell to his disciples, some of which we heard two Sundays ago. What is immediately striking is the vast difference in tone and content between the first reading and the gospel. The epiphany of the Spirit on Pentecost Day is described dramatically in terms of wind and fire and multi-lingual preaching. It is a grand-scale public event. Jesus’ verbal testament, by contrast, is intimate, affectionate, personal and private. No sign accompanies his words, but they are spoken between the sign of foot-washing and the final triumphant sign of the cross. Where the Pentecost event is bursting with missionary energy, the farewell discourse is focussed on the hearts of the disciples and the communion of life they share with Father, Word and Spirit. These have been the two poles between which the Church has journeyed throughout the Easter season. Indwelling and mission—these are the dynamic inter-related works of the Spirit in the on-going life of the Church. Extract from Break Open the Word. MASS TIMES

ST IGNATIUS Toowong: Weekdays 5.30pm every afternoon; Saturday 9.00am & 6.00pm (Vigil); Sunday 7.00am & 5.00pm.

Reconciliation: Saturday after 9.00am Mass and from 5.15pm to 5.45pm, or by appointment. HOLY SPIRIT Auchenflower: Weekdays 9.00am Monday, Wednesday & Friday; Sunday 8.30am.

For the gospel text we return to Jesus’ words of

farewell to his disciples, some of which we heard two

Sundays ago. What is immediately striking is the vast

difference in tone and content between the first

reading and the gospel.

The epiphany of the Spirit on Pentecost Day is described dramatically in

terms of wind and fire and multi-lingual preaching. It is a grand-scale

public event. Jesus’ verbal testament, by contrast, is intimate,

affectionate, personal and private. No sign accompanies his words, but

they are spoken between the sign of foot-washing and the final

triumphant sign of the cross.

Where the Pentecost event is bursting with missionary energy, the

farewell discourse is focussed on the hearts of the disciples and the

communion of life they share with Father, Word and Spirit. These have

been the two poles between which the Church has journeyed

throughout the Easter season. Indwelling and mission—these are the

dynamic inter-related works of the Spirit in the on-going life of the

Church.

100 Trees to mark 100 Years with the Jesuits

As part of Toowong Parish Jesuit Centenary our parish is holding a ceremonial tree planting - but we are not just planting a single tree at the church, or the school.

You are invited to join in as we plant 100 lemon myrtles (backhousia citriodora) - one for every year of Jesuit care – across the parish.

Wherever the Jesuits serve, they ‘go native’.

Hence the lemon myrtle, a Queensland native which is not just fragrant and beautiful but practical, with proven uses in cooking, healing & cleansing.

Plants of different sizes will be available from early June and we expect them to range in price from $3—$20 depending on the size of the plant.

For more info., or to go on the waiting list please email or phone:- * Robyn Emerson 0416 344 714 | [email protected] OR * Charles Costello 0431 709 269 | [email protected]

Refrain: If the spirit of God lives in you, sing to the Lord! Praise Him for His goodness! Deep in the Spirit your song!

I will play for Him!

Joy filled is my song!

My life is my melody!

To Him I belong!

Deep in Christ I live!

Faith in Him my prayer!

When my soul is torn and dry,

faith to sense Him there!

Spirit in my heart,

sing for me my prayer!

Deep within my heart I know:

You are always there!

OUR MISSION PRAYER

We, the St Ignatius community, are called to live the good news. We pray that we become the people that Jesus Christ called us to be. We pray that we know the Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit

through knowing Jesus in prayer, scripture and liturgy. We pray that we give hope to others by a practical, personal kindness, affirming each person's dignity, worth and destiny in Christ. May we live out this mission of our Christian vocation in the spirit of St. Ignatius.

Fr Richard Galbraith sj Fr Richard Galbraith sj Fr Richard Galbraith sj Fr Richard Galbraith sj followed Fr Drury as Parish Priest (1973—74).

Fr Richard, “Call me Richard”, introduced Lay Ministers for

Communion.

It was during his period as Parish Priest that the “Morrow” property

was offered to the parish to purchase. Fr Richard called a Parish

Meeting and was quickly told to purchase same; and where would

St Ignatius School be without it today!

Fr Richard became heavily involved in counselling troubled religious

following Vatican II and suffered a stress related health failure.

He also suffered a lot of criticism from parishioners for his progres-

sive ways, even being reported to the Bishop.

Father Richard later chose to leave the Order. Fr Richard Galbraith sj with Percy & Judy Hanlon

(at the baptism of their first child in July 1975).
