Brothers and sisters, You were dead in your transgressions and sins in which you oncelived following the age of this world, following the ruler of the power of the air, the spiritthat is now at work in the disobedient. All of us once lived among them in the desires of ourflesh, following the wishes of the flesh and the impulses, and we were by nature children ofwrath, like the rest. But God, who is rich in mercy, because of the great love he had for us,even when we were dead in our transgressions, brought us to life with Christ (by grace youhave been saved), raised us up with him, and seated us with him in the heavens in ChristJesus, that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in hiskindness to us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this isnot from you; it is the gift of God; it is not from works, so no one may boast. For we are hishandiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance,that we should live in them.Praise be to God always.

When they had finished breakfast, Jesussaid to Simon Peter, "Simon, son ofJohn, do you love me more than these?"He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you knowthat I love you." He said to him, "Feedmy lambs." He then said to him asecond time, "Simon, son of John, doyou love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord,you know that I love you." He said tohim, "Tend my sheep." He said to himthe third time, "Simon, son of John, doyou love me?" Peter was distressed thathe had said to him a third time, "Do youlove me?" and he said to him, "Lord, youknow everything; you know that I loveyou." (Jesus) said to him, "Feed mysheep. Amen, amen, I say to you, whenyou were younger, you used to dressyourself and go where you wanted; butwhen you grow old, you will stretch outyour hands, and someone else will dressyou and lead you where you do not wantto go." He said this signifying by whatkind of death he would glorify God. Andwhen he had said this, he said to him,"Follow me". This is the truth. Peace bewith you.
St. Rita was born at Spoleto, Italy in 1381. At an early age, she begged herparents to allow her to enter a convent. Instead they arranged a marriage forher. Rita became a good wife and mother, but her husband was a man ofviolent temper. In anger he often mistreated his wife. He taught their childrenhis own evil ways.Rita tried to perform her duties faithfully and to pray and receive thesacraments frequently. After nearly twenty years of marriage, her husbandwas stabbed by an enemy but before he died, he repented because Ritaprayed for him. Shortly afterwards, her two sons died, and Rita was alone inthe world. Prayer, fasting, penances of many kinds, and good works filledher days. She was admitted to the convent of the Augustinian nuns at Casciain Umbria, and began a life of perfect obedience and great charity.Sister Rita had a great devotion to the Passion of Christ. "Please let mesuffer like you, Divine Saviour," she said one day, and suddenly one of thethorns from the crucifix struck her on the forehead. It left a deep woundwhich did not heal and which caused her much suffering for the rest of herlife. She died on May 22, 1457. She is the patroness of impossible cases.Her feast day is May 22. God, through the prayers of St. Rita, may we learn to bear our crosses in lifein the same spirit in which she bore hers. Amen.
