The Messenger firsT bapTisT hunTsville this sunday knowing, loving, serving Christ...together Volume 62 / Week Number 20 / May 19, 2011 FIRST THOUGHTS David Hull, Pastor The time has come for us to make important decisions about the future of our church buildings. These decisions will affect the ministry of our church for decades to come. We have been working on this project for many years. The next few days will determine how we move forward. Let me outline for you the schedule and invite your participation in the process. Tuesday, May 17 – We open the bids that have been submitted by six general contractors. Our architects will then closely study these bids and will guide us in the evaluation of these bids. Wednesday, May 18 – Building Committee and the Trustees meet together with the architects to review the bids. They must then determine the scope of the project based upon the costs and select a general contractor to recommend to the church. Wednesday, May 18 – The Leadership Council meets and will hear the reports from the Building Committee and Trustees. This group will then formulate the full recommendation that will be brought to the church for a vote. This recommendation will include the name of the contractor, the cost of the project, and the scope of the work to be done. Monday, May 23 – The Deacons will meet and will discuss the recommendation from the Leadership Council. Wednesday, May 25 – In our Quarterly Business meeting at 5:45 that night, we will present the recommendation to the church and have a discussion of this recommendation. We will not take a vote on this night, but will have opportunities for questions to be answered and information to be shared. Wednesdays, May 25, June 1 and June 8 – Full information about the building recommendation will be shared in The Messenger. Sunday, June 12 – We will vote on the recommendation by written ballot in both morning worship services. Provisions for absentee ballots will be made prior to this Sunday. Our Building Committee has done wonderful work bringing us to this point. We continue to trust in God’s guidance as we take each new step along the way. I encourage you to pray and participate in the process as we make significant decisions for the future of our church. FBC Deacon Nominations BeginJune 5th, 2011

Deacon Nomination and Acceptance forms are available in the church office and through Sunday School classes. These forms give an overview of the nomination process and the requirements for FBC deacons. Completed

forms should be delivered to the Deacon Ballot Box in the Church Office.

As you prayerfully consider a nomination, reflect on these Biblical requirements for

deacons:

• Demonstrate Christian home life (1 Tim. 3-11-12)• Demonstrate personal and public morality

and a life accepted by God and the church (1 Tim. 3:8, 10, 13; Phil. 1:27)

VBS Memories...I grew up in a amall, rural town in East Tennessee, God’s country. There were three churches in town all on the same street. My family attended a Presbyterian church with only a few children and adults. We didn’t have enough of either to have a VBS.

The Methodist and Baptist congregations down the street both did. So every summer during June and July all the children from the different churches would attend both VBS weeks.

The Baptist church had VBS at night from 6:00-9:00. There was always a biblical theme for the week. Our crafts would go along with the theme. We would sing songs, play outside, have red Kool-Aid and cookies for snacks, and just have a grand time!!

The Methodist group would have their VBS in the morning from 9:00-12:00. We would meet in the Sanctuary for singing, pledging to the flags, and then off we would go to the basement for class. They weren’t quite as organized as the Baptist church so we didn’t always have a theme, but we always had a good Bible story and some super fun crafts!! They really knew how to do crafts!!! Of course, red Kool-Aid and cookies were the standard snack food everywhere.

We always ended the week on Sunday night with a program. How proud we and our parents were to see us standing up there singing and sharing. Oh how my sister and I looked forward every summer to those two weeks of VBS.

These are memories I hold dear. I will never forget the women who helped me make those memories by giving of themselves to prepare, teach, and lead children in VBS.

That is why I serve in VBS. I hope to leave that same kind of memory and impression with the children of FBC that my leaders left with me.
