MASS INTENTIONS

GOSPEL MEDITATION

May 20, 2018

Pentecost Sunday

Today we celebrate the "birthday of the Church!" Pentecost is described in the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles. But before the great driving wind and tongues of fire empowering the Disciples, the Holy Spirit had already arrived. The Gospel for today's Mass during the day is from John 20. Jesus appears to the fearful disciples after his resurrection. He first speaks a message of calm. "Peace be with

you." The apostles "rejoiced when they saw the Lord." When the enthusiastic response settles down, Jesus "breathed on them and said to them 'Receive the Holy Spirit.'"

This action is Trinitarian, and it has happened before. If you turn your Bible back to the beginning, you'll read: "The Lord God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so many became a living being" (Genesis 2:7). In the Garden of Eden, we see God's first, original covenant with man. The breath of life signifies that original indwelling of grace, the special state of likeness and friendship with God before the Fall. Here now, in this locked room, the Apostles receive the long-awaited promise: the very breath of God, new life, a new covenant.

In the pairing of these two readings-the Pentecost experience in Acts and the breath of Jesus in John's Gospel -we see that the coming of the Holy Spirit is not only an empowering, it is an indwelling. We have each received the breath of grace in our baptism. It is confirmed, strengthened, and deepened in each reception of the sacraments. If we persevere in virtue, the Spirit of God is alive in us, inspiring our actions of love. This Pentecost Sunday, how is the breath of God alive in you?

PARISH NEWS

On Sunday, May 20th, Christians

across the world will celebrate

Pentecost. On this day, we

commemorate the coming of the Holy

Spirit on the early followers of Jesus.

Christians shared life together, focusing

on teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread and prayer. In

the same fashion, we come together as a parish in the hope

that the Holy Spirit will renew and empower our church.

Please join us for a multicultural potluck lunch at 12:00

p.m. on Sunday, May 20th in the social hall. Please bring a

dish that reflects your rich cultural heritage, according to

the first letter in your last name: main dish A-F, salad G-K,

fruit L-P, dessert Q-U and bottled water V-Z. We look

forward to sharing fellowship with you.

Call David Kraatz at 891-5591 for questions.

Thank You!

The Chico Portuguese Holy Ghost Fatima Club will be holding their annual Festa on Sunday May 20th . The celebration will start at the 10:00 mass with the crowning of the Queen at St Johns Church. After the mass the Festa will proceed to the Portuguese Hall at 14th and Broadway. The traditional sopas meal will be served from 12:00 until 2:00 pm and again the evening from 5:30 to 7:00. There will be an auction immediately following the noon meal and traditional Portuguese music will be played throughout the day.

This years Queen is Teresa Mendoca, daughter of Steve and Jeanette Mendonca.

Her sidemaid is Maddi Hansen daughter of Troy and Melissa Hansen.

Past Queen is Sarah Mendonca, daughter of Steve and Jeanette Mendonca.

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP

On this Pentecost Sunday, if you come to Mass at my parish you will see a sea of red all around. The choir, the lectors, the

extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, the people in the pews, and of course the celebrant and our deacon, will all be wearing

red. We are one of those parishes that strive to reflect the color of the liturgy in our dress. It can be a sight to see.

What we put on our bodies serves only as a reminder of what is really important during these liturgical celebrations. At Pentecost, it

was the Spirit of God that filled those in the first Christian community. We wear red to call to mind that very Spirit, often depicted as a

fire or flame. However, if we just use red as a reminder of the power of the Spirit without letting it change us, then our actions become

merely sentimental.

We are filled with the Holy Spirit through the sacraments of the Church. God touches us and enters into us in a profound way, just like

in that upper room at Pentecost. That first powerful movement of the Spirit led to a Church that grew and flourished and remains alive

today. What is the movement of the Spirit within calling you to do today? Do we allow God to move us and do great things through us?

Red is a bold color to wear at any time. But our actions should be even bolder.

Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

PRAYER FOR THE HOLY SPIRIT

Holy Spirit, fan into flame the gifts

I received in my Baptism and Confirmation.

I want to receive the fire of Your love

as Your disciples did at Pentecost.

Come with wonder and awe,

with wisdom, understanding, and counsel,

with courage and faith in You.

Holy Spirit, may my actions witness

to Your presence in my life.

Help me to see the ways my strengths

can serve others in their weakness.

In all my interactions, I want to radiate

love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,

generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Breathe new life into the world through me.

Amen.

What is it that you are looking for? In our lives we are constantly

searching. Jesus recognizes that we are looking for answers and invites

us to follow him. Today, the Catholic Church continues this mission

and invites everyone to “come and see.” (John 1:46) The ordinary way

that most people become Catholic is through a process that is a modern

adaptation of the ancient method of the first centuries of the

Church. This process is called the Rite of Christian Initiation of

Adults, abbreviated as "R.C.I.A."

FAMILY ROOM

Family Room May 19-20, 2018

Pentecost happens for us, too!

Sometimes we can fall into the trap of thinking the

events we celebrate at Mass are ancient history and the

readings are old news. We hear the stories again and

again and we might tune out.

Today’s celebration is among the most dramatic in the whole church year; in fact, in all of church history. It is the empowerment not only for the early Christians but for US to live as a people set apart, as a people on fire with the love and the tools of the Holy Spirit.

If we look around at the challenges of life today on a

global level, on a local level, in our own families, in

our own personal life, it is easy to be overwhelmed.

There is just so much that needs to be done! From

climate change to immigration policy to the weeds

taking over the back yard to changing our judgmental

attitudes, we may feel like it is all too much. In our

own power, it IS too much. God knew that our

personal strength and determination would not be up

to the tasks before us, so he sent the Holy Spirit not

only on the first Pentecost but TODAY, for US. We

receive the Holy Spirit in fullness at our Confirmation,

but this is an ongoing relationship that needs attention,

nurturing, and acceptance. God will never force His

gifts on us: we need to ask for them, then use them.

Do we stop and pray for the Holy Spirit to direct us?

Do we act when we feel that inner nudge? Do we

spend time discerning where our own time and energy

can best be used to “go out into the whole world”?

Right here, today, at ODS we can celebrate the gifts of

our individuality and our world community by joining

our brothers and sisters for the potluck at noon at the

Social Hall. We are diverse, individual, and at the

same time ONE. God continues to bless us!
