THE OTHER PATAGONIA: PAGE 30

IIff yyoouu wweerree ttoo ttaakkee aa mmaapp ooff tthhee wwoorrlldd andfold it over at the equator, matching up the Pacificcoastlines of North and South America, you’d findthat Ventura—at around 34 degrees north lati-tude—lands near a small fishing village in CentralChile. Essentially, it’s a mirror image of this area, familiar yet precisely backward; the prevailing seabreeze and cold ocean currents push up the coastrather than down, and even now while spring is infull bloom in Ventura County, the opposite seasoncolors the Chilean landscape toasty autumn hues.

Could there be a better place for me to write thisparticular note?

A travel-themed issue of a regional publicationsounds a bit oxymoronic, I know. But we kept itlocal by editing outside the box, including articleslike Amber Lennon’s unique take on the OjaiStorytelling Festival (p. 20), where listeners journey“through the veil” into imaginary worlds.

And then there is Patagonia: the place and theVentura-based company that changed the businessworld. If you don’t know the backstory onPatagonia, Inc. and its founder Yvon Chouinard, you owe it to yourself to read up on one of VenturaCounty’s proudest assets.

But you’ll have to do that elsewhere. Yvon and hiscompany have been written about more times thanhe’s comfortable with, in everything from Outsidemagazine to the New York Times and Vanity Fair.

We took a different approach. In my mid-twenties I stepped into the mirror

and spent a year in Chile—not in the Patagoniaregion, though I’ve traveled there many times—mainly in the town I mentioned earlier: the par-allel universe around 34 degrees south latitude.I ended up buying a couple acres and buildingan off-the-grid house where I lived for manyyears, where I now sit writing the first half ofthis note, mere weeks ahead of my fortiethbirthday, while my wife and 10-month-olddaughter take a siesta upstairs.

Though my life in Chile didn’t center onPatagonia, I’ve grown to know the place fairly well.Enough to know it is beyond words. Still, I man-aged to wrangle some 1,500 of them (p. 30) in anattempt to bring it home, concentrating less onsightseeing and more on the magic. There’s aninteresting local tie-in, too. Not surprisingly, itinvolves the Patagonia company.

It is often said that the best part of travel is com-ing home. And to be sure, it is a great feeling—tohear the washing machine purr and lie in your ownbed. But I disagree that returning to comfort andfamiliarity is travel’s highest reward.

We’ve been back in the country for a week, andwhen I look at our daughter now I see more thancute. Her well of experience is immeasurably deeper, though you’d never know it; she still chews her toesand laughs hysterically at a sneeze. On some level, though, she’s gained a new perspective on the worldand her place in it.

Travel, I believe, is not so much about seeing newplaces, but about seeing everything with new eyes. Iwouldn’t have said it at 35,000 feet (apologies toeveryone on LAN Chile flight 600), but this trip willbe among the great experiences of our little girl’slife. It will help form the person she grows into.

Yes, coming home is nice. But I guess Ibelieve more strongly in another cliché: Travelis the great educator.

Passersby wouldn’tnotice anything partic-

of the U.S. GreenBuilding Council.

SSSSiinnccee EEaarrtthh DDaayy bbeeggaann iinn 11997700,, participation has steadilyincreased, making it the largest secular holiday in the world.Though traditionally held in April, it’s not unusual nowadays tocatch wind of green events happening throughout the year. Green isthe new black—fashionable in any season—and “earth day, everyday” has become the mantra influencing every decision from foodto vacations.

So, if it’s a green getaway you desire and eco-conscious accom-modations you seek, consider an ecology-based hotel within drivingdistance of Ventura County and in one of the most vibrant cities onthe planet: The Orchard Garden Hotel in San Francisco.

Located smack in the heart of the city, adjacent to the dragongates of Chinatown,“The Garden,” as locals call it, is refreshinglyaffordable in spite of its swank modern design. Most impressive, however, is its prestigious LEED certification—a rigorous rating sys-tem, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, that measures abuilding’s energy savings (on average, 30 percent less than compara-ble buildings).

Built green from the ground up, it’s the first hotel in California(and only the fourth in the world) to receive this Leadership inEnergy and Environmental Design certification. To put its statusinto perspective, it’s one of only seven hotels in the entire world tohave the honor of LEED distinction, although the list is sure to

grow rapidly in 2009 and beyond."You no longer have to choose between being green or luxuri-

ous," says Stefan Mühle, the general manager of The OrchardGarden Hotel. "You can have all the amenities you’re accustomed toand still be green."

The hotel’s 82 deluxe guestrooms and four elegant suites offerhigh-end perks including Egyptian cotton linens, a large screen flat-panel TV, spa style robes, CD and DVD players with surroundsound, a minibar stocked with delicacies from champagne toM&M's, and an iPod docking station. Matching the quality of itsamenities, the hotel’s environmentally-friendly programs offerchemical-free citrus-based cleaning products, a 100 percent tobac-co-free environment, and San Francisco’s first key card energy con-trol system—which shuts off the electricity when you leave theroom. (Note: When you are soaking away in a luxurious bath oforganic lavender-lemon bubbles and your hubby runs downstairsto the fitness center with the key card, you may be left fumblingaround in the dark for that plush spa robe!)

Besides a spacious bathroom that was almost as big as thegranny flat attached to our house in Ojai, the suite we stayed inwas adorned with a rooftop terrace overlooking the city, aGreenopia resource book with an exhaustive list of nearby eco-friendly restaurants and businesses, a huge bouquet of flowersmade from colorful twisted wires and polished gemstones (nowater required), a complimentary box of gourmet chocolates, and a “theta brainwaves” music CD to induce sleep. Which, bythe way, worked like a charm ... or was it the chocolates, or therelaxing hot bath?

Intimate and eco-friendly, The Orchard Garden Hotel is aperfect spot for a dreamy green getaway. Rates start at $189. Formore information, call 415.399.9807 or visitTheOrchardGardenHotel.com.

Huddled aroundfires or sipping tea beside the AM radio, stories were the vessels by which ourimaginations traveled to distant lands and new experiences.

The Village of Tales Ojai Storytelling Festival is a journey around the worldin four days of vivid story and music. Every year at the beginning of May, whenthe days grow longer and warmer, people of all ages gather around professionalstorytellers at Libbey Park to take a unique trip.

“The Libbey Bowl is a heavenly venue,” says Andy Irwin, who presented histales at the Festival in 2008.“If you were inside the world of ‘A Midsummer’sNight Dream,’ this is where the dream would take place.”

With a captivated audience tucked into a canopy of California oaks, story-tellers weave listeners into their stories until the two are one fabric of experience. We become the hero or the victim, the loved or the lost, the villain or damsel; andwe animate our experience through the characters described.

The oral tradition has been our mode of transmitting cultural history andvalues since the beginning of humankind. One of the oldest and best-known sto-rytellers, Homer, was believed to have sung the poetry of “The Odyssey” whileplaying the lyre. And within the story, Odysseus himself becomes a storytellerwhen he returns to Ithaca and is the very embodiment of distant lands throughthe stories he brings.

At the Ojai Storytelling Festival, the talented tellers are like modernversions of Odysseus, and through their imaginative presentations we are

carried into the realm of myth, animal symbols, folktales, and the sharedhuman condition. By the end of the four days, audience members have hadthe opportunity to become tellers and articulate their own stories throughinteractive workshops. “We are at a moment when we have leapt into theflame with our million distractions,” says storyteller Hobey Ford. “Story is away for us to reconnect with our roots as humans.”

Brian Bemel, the founder of Performances to Grow On, a nonprofit com-mitted to bringing theater and performance art to Ventura County, first dis-covered the power of storytelling as a teacher when students “listened in a spe-cial way.” After attending the National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough,Tennessee, he invited storytellers to schools, and in 2000 created the OjaiStorytelling Festival with a handful of volunteers. Bemel’s motivation was sim-ple. As he puts it, “In these high-tech times … it’s important to take time outto enjoy the simpler pleasures in life: a good story, a sense of community, amelding of cultures.”

Since the Festival’s inception ten years ago, word has spread about thequaint town of Ojai hosting some of the most versatile storytellers in the world.Professional teller Patrick Ball refers to Ojai in ancient terms: “The early Celtswould have described [it] as a ‘thin’ place, a place where the veil that separatesour world from the other world is very thin, indeed. In other places, we story-tellers often have to struggle mightily to push that veil aside. In Ojai, it moveswith barely a breath.”

The storytellers come from all manner of backgrounds, ethnicities, and

Master storytellers such as BillHarley (above) use everything

from body English to giantbutterflies to whisk listeners to

imaginary worlds, as the oraltradition, which dates back tothe beginning of humankind,

continues to evolve.

belief systems. Bemel selects tellers based on their ability to connect with audiences atthe National Storytelling Festival. Their stories illuminate our inherent similaritieswhile also demonstrating the diversity of our cultural experiences. They communi-cate lessons learned, inspiration, and loss. And sometimes they remind us of the plainhumor of life.

All travelers will be familiar with these themes. I learned firsthand that oneshouldn’t take a crawling baby on a two-month home search to the cliff-laden AmalfiCoast. But while there, I connected with my Italian heritage in the family stories toldby an old gardener in my grandmother’s hometown. Not to mention the hindsighthumor of lugging suitcases up and down the stairs of il stazione di treno with a fuss-ing baby strapped to my back.

By hearing the tales presented in the past ten years of the Ojai StorytellingFestival, we have traveled much of the world—Cuba, Ireland, Japan, and the CapeVerde Islands off West Africa, to mention a few, as well as many of our ownUnited States.

Native Appalachian storyteller Donald Davis remembers, "I discovered that in astory I could safely dream any dream, hope any hope, go anywhere I pleased.”

For your next journey, consider a four-day getaway to the land of imagination atthe Village of Tales Ojai Storytelling Festival. v

UUUUnnlleessss yyoouu’’vvee bbeeeenn hhiiddiinngg aawwaayy iinn aann AAffgghhaann ccaavvee forthe past year, you know that the cruise industry has been sailingrough waters during these turbulent economic times.

It’s a mess: Billionaires drop a billion or two and just plainfolks watch their retirement accounts shrink before their very eyes.Since the latter are precisely the people who form the cruisingbase, adjustments are having to be made to right the ship. Andtherein lies an opportunity for the rest of us. Cruising is gettingcheaper, with higher standards, and life at sea is becoming morecomfortable by the day.

If you choose carefully, you can have a luxurious week or twoat sea for little more than it would cost to stay home, cook three

meals a day, and go out for an occasional evening’s entertainment. And you won’t have to pay valet parking.

Recently, my wife and I bought a one-week cruise on theNorwegian Star out of San Pedro down to the Mexican Riviera—not something we would normally rush to do, but we were readyfor a break and didn’t want the hassle of flying. (When did air-ports turn into refugee depots and planes become cattle trucks?)

We found a price we simply couldn’t refuse—just over 500dollars each—and drove the 80 miles from Ventura County toSan Pedro, overjoyed that we didn’t have to confront LAX. Forthe Saturday-to-Saturday trip, the freeway was lighter thanusual, and our walk from parking spot to ship ended up being

less than 100 yards. There were some 2,300 passengers on board, ranging from

retired folk to large families. The first night, one of the two diningrooms was jammed, with kids dozing on the floor leading to theformal Versailles room. Not a good sign. Was this what we hadsigned on for, a free-for-all down-market holiday camp?

Thankfully, once we got our own timetable sorted out wemanaged to avoid the crowds. The on demand “free style” diningmeans that you eat when you want, where you want, with whomyou want at either of the public dining rooms. We mainly chose theVersailles for dinner because once the families cleared out, it wasquiet, with elegant, friendly service. The menu is wide-ranging anddiverse. The wine list was a good one, and on a couple of nights wepopped into the martini bar before dinner.

We never had a disappointing meal. The staff, made up ofpeople from around the globe, was delightful. In their manners and

dress, they looked as if they should be the guests being served bythe frequently sloppy passengers. This isn’t the Queen Mary III, butwould it be asking too much for guests not to come to dinner look-ing like they were getting ready to swab the decks?

We used the gym most days, sampled a few of the spa treat-ments, and enjoyed the quiet of the Asian-themed meditationlounges. The destination ports of Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, andPuerto Vallarta were quieter than usual, which was great for bargainshopping and sampling local food. There was plenty of time fordisembarking, and we didn’t have to rush anywhere.

There was only one problem that became something of anirritant. With the cruise lines feeling the economic pinch, theyspend an inordinate amount of time pushing sales of rubbishy jew-elry: cut-rate watches, art auctions, dry land tours,“tax-free” alcohol(a trip to Trader Joe’s would get you better liquor bargains).

We found our own way to downtown markets and beachside

cafes. In Mazatlan, an art festival was underway at the restored oldcolonial town and we sat in the 19th century opera house, theAngela Peralta Theater, as a youth symphony orchestra rehearsedfor an evening concert. It was the highlight of our trip.

Now, a few tips: Do pay a little extra for a balcony. It is a won-derful place to sit with a cocktail watching the arrival in and depar-ture from ports of call, and it provides a nice retreat with a book ora snack when the sea of humanity becomes too much. And do, byall means, take in the many and varied live entertainment showsprovided. On our trip, the dancers in the big production showswere excellent, some of the specialty performers were world class, and if the entertainment director’s cockney accent (a poor man’sRicky Gervais) was driving us crazy by the end of the cruise, we’resure some of the passengers found it charming.

We encountered the biggest downer of the trip back in SanPedro, where we arrived at 9 a.m. well fed and rested. We walkedto our car, and were then trapped in a horrendous 90-minutetraffic jam—before ever leaving the parking lot. Apparently, theparking company had only one person manning the three exits. Some friends missed their plane connections, and the parkingincompetence brought back much of the stress we had dumpedon our cruise.

But who said life is perfect?

AAllll wwiillddeerrnneessss aarreeaass aarree ssppeeccttaaccuullaarr,, but some leave a more lastingimpression than others. Patagonia is one that burns deep into the senses. It isunforgettable.

On rare evenings when the weather in Patagonia cooperates, a curi-ous glow spills like cold honey over the land. Towering volcanoes jut upfrom the amber hue so shockingly picturesque, so perfect and white-capped with snow that they look like a mirage. And then they’re gone. Justlike that. Reclaimed by the forces of nature that helped create them.

Nothing is constant in Patagonia. Nothing, that is, except the wind. Not abreeze—a wind: a rip-your-face-off howler that blows birds about likeautumn leaves and bends trees until they grow horizontally, rendering twistedlandscapes straight out of Dr. Seuss.

The place has an otherworldly presence. So much so that locals tend tospeak of it as a beloved person rather than a geographic locale.“I always feltmyself stifling as soon as I left the great forests, the timberland that drew meback like a mother,” wrote the Nobel Prize-winning Chilean poet PabloNeruda, who was born in the region.“My life is a long pilgrimage, alwaysreturning to the forest lost in me.”

Its remoteness has made Patagonia a land of myths and legends, a South

American Timbuktu or Shangri-la. To be sure, Yvon Chouinard nailed itwhen he named his Ventura-based company after Patagonia. This is morethan a place; it is the essence of wilderness: overwhelming yet fragile, captivat-ing, mystical, perfect when left alone.

Never a precisely defined region, Patagonia is shared by two countries,Chile and Argentina. Depending on whom you talk to, it encompasses rough-ly everything south of Río Colorado and the eastern portion of Río Bío Bío, aterritory equal to the combined surface areas of Texas and California. But tosimplify matters, just think of it as the entire southern cone of the SouthAmerican continent, that thin dangle of land at the bottom of the world.

Trying to pin Patagonia down to a distinct identity is futile. On top ofthe divergent nationalities there’s the terrain: an array of temperate rain-forests, arid plains, glaciers, fertile valleys, and sub-Antarctic nether lands.

Capture Patagonia in words? Impossible. I lived in Chile for nearly adecade and have been to the Great South numerous times. Yet the placebewilders me. This is finis terrae, the uttermost ends of the earth. I can’t say Iknow Patagonia, but I can say that I feel an imposing sense of insignificancewhen I’m there, as if the whole of mankind had suddenly ceased to exist. It isa wonderfully lonely place.

Like the American West of old,Patagonia is home to a varietyof landscapes. Clockwise from

top left: The Lakes District ofChile; the future Patagonia

National Park, ConservaciónPatagonica's major focus

project; the iconic cuernos ofTorres del Paine.

Puerto Montt is the transport hub and access point to wild Patagonia. Settledby German colonists in the mid-19th century, the small city with its middle-European architecture and mixed bag of inhabitants strikes an incongruous balancebetween distinct ethnicities; like many southern regions of South America, it lacksany vestige of cultural coherence.

Geographically, Puerto Montt and its environs morph into familiar territory fornearly everyone: Americans see the Pacific Northwest; Japanese cry out “Fuji!” whenthe snowcapped cone of Osorno Volcano appears; Germans are so at home herethey’ve developed a regional language, Laguna Deutsch, or Lake German.

It is, in some ways, an intriguing place. But in the scheme of things, PuertoMontt is merely a foyer leading to the grand ballroom. And the ballroom is beyondwords. I won’t try to summarize Patagonia. Maybe if I just share an experience fromone of my trips.

It happened during a two-day ferry crossing between Puerto Montt andBariloche, Argentina. We were pushing east across Lake Todos Santos (sometimescalled Lago Esmeralda for the blue-green of its glacial waters), knifing through the fogin a region where waterways are the only navigable link to civilization.

Midway through the crossing, in the proverbial Middle of Nowhere, the skysuddenly cracked open. The shroud of fog lifted miraculously from the lake,

unveiling an arena of mountain peaks. Snow came to rest on the branches ofnative trees all around—coigüe, raule, and araucarias with their peculiar“monkey puzzle” form.

Then the most remarkable thing happened: a child appeared. A littlegirl, maybe eight years old, emerged from the impenetrable darkness of thecoigüe forest. There she stood, at the edge of a lake stretching between twocountries. The trees dwarfed everything around them. The mountains abovethe trees were so tall they soared out of sight into their own clouds. And shewas so small.

The effect was extraordinary. I watched as a deckhand passed her the familymail and what I took to be a box of supplies. She waved at the captain. Then shedisappeared nonchalantly into the woods, making her way home.

There’s a famous Neruda poem where he writes about his origins, say-ing,“I come from below, from the earth.” Now it made sense.

Bigname Americans including Sylvester Stallone, Ted Turner, and MichaelDouglas have bought properties, lured by the open-air milieu.

But not everyone buys land in Patagonia to play cowboy. DougTompkins, the founder of North Face and Esprit clothing companies, pur-chased the equivalent of a small country in Chilean Patagonia during the1990s with the intent of preserving one of the planet’s great remaining tem-perate rain forests. He set about establishing a natural sanctuary calledParque Pumalín, and planned to ultimately donate the park to a privatefoundation administered by Chileans.

The grandiose display of eco-altruism was, however, simply too big, toonew at the time for most Chileans to grasp. The national response wentbeyond skepticism into the realm of the bizarre. Tompkins has been accusedof everything from gringo imperialism to setting up a nuclear dump. I haveotherwise rational Chilean friends who are convinced he is a Nazi establish-

ing a colony in their southern boondocks. Meanwhile, Chile’s neo-Nazis (who do in fact have a presence in Patagonia) somehowconverted Tompkins to Judaism and accused him of importingIsraeli commandos.

Though economic conglomerates with interests in lumber, mining, energy, and fishing have waged a campaign of anti-Tompkins propaganda over the years, many Chileans andArgentines have come to embrace the idea of preserving wild landsby purchasing them outright. The once-wacky concept meanwhilehas jumped to the next level, and led to the permanent protectionof millions of acres in both countries.

In 1993, Tompkins married his old friend Kristine McDivitt, who worked closely with Yvon Chouinard to start Patagonia, Inc.and was, for many years, the company’s CEO. As KristineTompkins, she’s taken grand-scale conservation to new heights inSouth America, creating a nonprofit organization calledConservación Patagonica (formerly known as the Patagonia LandTrust), which buys, protects, and restores wild lands in thePatagonia region.

As you’d expect, Ventura’s namesake company—with its mis-sion to act as a model for corporate responsibility and change—isinvolved. Yvon Chouinard and his wife, Malinda, are on the Boardof Trustees of Conservación Patagonica, and local Patagonia com-pany employees travel in small groups to assist with the gruntwork of creating new national parks: digging out fence posts, rolling up wire, removing nonnative plants.

It’s not the sort of thing most people travel to do. But then,Patagonia has never drawn your typical pleasure traveler. It beck-ons subtly from the lower edge of maps and the bottom of globes, hovering over the Antarctic void as though it could snap off at anymoment and melt like ice.

And metaphorically speaking, it could; overgrazing, overfish-ing, and deforestation are just a few of the ways the region is beingmanhandled. While environmental philanthropists including theTompkins duo and the Patagonia company have made significantprogress, effectively preserving huge chunks of wild nature, lessthan five percent of Patagonia is currently protected by any type ofconservation plan.

IItt hhaass bbeeeenn sseevveerraall yyeeaarrss ssiinnccee mmyy llaasstt ttrriipp ttoo PPaattaaggoonniiaa.. Notlong ago I read that the annual number of visitors to Torres delPaine, the iconic national park in southern Chile, had nearlytripled since the mid-1990s. Other than that I don’t know much. I,too, was just a visitor,“passing through one of primitive nature’sgreat cathedrals,” as Neruda put it.

The last time I saw Patagonia was, incongruously, through theacrylic plastic of an airplane window. There was a ghostly ribbonof smoke climbing out of the forest folds below, and I rememberthinking of that little girl down there somewhere—the way shejust appeared at the edge of Lake Todos Santos, how she blendedeffortlessly back into the shadowy labyrinth of coigüe trees.

Her existence is the essence of Patagonia, I think. It is life cutthin and stripped of all the hucksterism and fabricated busyness ofmodern society. Patagonia puts things in perspective. It will brandyour soul and change you forever. v
