April showers bring May flow-ers; so it is said. After a cold
winter, let us hope it may be so.May also brings to mind two verysignificant events. One is Mother’sDay and the other is Memorial Day.
Once Abraham Lincoln said,“All that I am or hope to be, I oweto my angel mother.” Mothers arespecial people and maybe we neverappreciate them until after theyears have passed. Motherhoodimplies home. In the city of At-lanta, there is a statue of one of itsprominent citizens, Harry W.Grady. Assuming the burdens ofpublic responsibilities, one day heleft his office. No one knew wherehe had gone. Later it became knownthat he had returned to his oldhomestead. He needed somethingthat was missing. Seeing hismother, he said to her, “Your boyhas been too much in the world and
has come back to be nourished.”Motherhood is where our roots are.
Memorial Day is always an im-pressive time. In tribute to all thosewho died in all our wars, many willspeak of the good and honorablemen and women and the gratitudethe nation owes them. In the sorrowof those, we find ourselves incapableof expressing our debt and grati-tude, as we contemplate the sacri-fices of those who gave their lives fortheir country. It is beyond the powerof oratory to do justice to the task.Bereavement is far too deeply in theheart for mere words to penetrate.
So, as Masons we wear thesquare and compass to be remindedthat freedom must be won dailyand guarded zealously so that ourposterity may enjoy the luxury ofbeing free. “I shall pass throughthis world but once. Any good I cando, let me do it now.”
It’s always great to recognize ourRoad Runner hospital drivers,
several were honored at the laststated meeting, don’t miss the pre-sentation photos on page 14.
So you don’t have to scratchyour head about the images on thefront page, let me explain whatthey are all about. Potentate’sNotes
Nobles,
What a great year we have going for us here at Sahib Shrine; it has been apleasure to serve as your Potentate for the year 2010. Attendance at ouractivities is still a major problem at Sahib. We believe that we offer a largevenue of different programs. Let us not forget Thursday luncheon, Birth-day Anniversary nights and Friday nights at our Shrine Restaurant. Pleasecome and meet your friends at Sahib.
The Master Mason event on March 30 was again a great night at Sahib. Ifyou attended, you were in for an excellent program. Remember we are allMaster Masons, which is where our journey started. Let’s try to attendlodge whenever we can. It’s wonderful for your soul. It also helps the lodgewhen we attend.
Bingo is still our super fundraiser, and if you can help on Tuesdays, pleasecome. Summer means many less volunteers available, so if you can pleasehelp.
Your Shrine is doing well financially, and we have some projects coming upto keep your temple in first class repairs.
Lady Carol and I feel privileged in how 2010 is doing. All of you nobleshave been very helpful when we ask you to help. Thank you so much.Remember Sahib is yours and we understand that we must take care of it.
Yours in the Faith,
Don Vos, Potentate

The Florida Shrine Association will hold its annualconvention this month in Ocala, May 5-8. This
event is well attended by Sahib nobles with many ofour units represented, and participating in variousunit competitions. This event provides a good oppor-tunity for us to socialize with fellow unit membersfrom other temples and share fellowship with otherShrines from Florida as well as unit competitions.
We had a Circus/Fair Appreciation Dinner onMonday, April 5; approximately 200 of our tirelessvolunteers attended. Many thanks to you all. Themonth of March proved to be very busy with all of theactivities and events.
The Potentate’s Spring Cruise was April 9-24 tothe British Isles; a 15-day voyage aboard the GrandPrincess. What a way to relax and enjoy after a verybusy first quarter.
Do not forget Mom on Mother’s Day, Sunday,May 9. Sahib is having a Sunday Fun Day on Sunday,May 23. Come out and enjoy.
The Florida Grand Lodge in Orlando is coming upon the weekend of May 30, then our Sahib Ceremonialon June 4-5. Our degree team spends a great deal oftime to produce the ceremonial, come out and watchit.
If we were up north, this is the time of year whenthe earth is regenerating itself; plants start to
grow, the days get longer and we seek the outdoors forour fun. But here in Florida, where we have ‘justanother day in paradise’, we can forget the coldwinter weather we have had and just enjoy our cli-mate.
The Divan calendar is full and keeps us busy. Westart May with a Potentate’s Ball in Miami, ourfamous Pancake Breakfast and the Florida ShrineAssociation Convention, where the Divan will begoing to see our Sahib units compete with the best ofother Florida Shrine units. The competition will be
tough, but we are all looking forward to bringinghome our share of awards.
We are also really hoping for an increase in atten-dance at our Birthday/Anniversary Dinner Dance. Please think about coming to help celebrate withother couples who are marking a special time in theirlives. Another venue you may be missing out on is ourFriday nights at Sahib. Please come and bring yourfriends for a good time that is really inexpensive andlots of fun and laughs. Have dinner and stay andenjoy the music and fellowship. At the end of themonth, we will be travelling to Orlando for the FloridaGrand Lodge. I leave you with my words for May; “It’snice to be important, but more important to be nice.”
Well, I stopped by the box office today and Marylouasked, “Are you coming to…? When we tallied it
all up, it was more than a fifty-dollar bill. Not that Iam complaining, I am not. Marylou took my moneyand then had to divide it into three different parts forthree different events. The lady is a whiz. She worksthe box office almost daily and takes care of everyone’sneeds and desires, as far as reservations go. Wherewould we be without her?
Then I was calling Monday Night Bar Bingo, whenone of the players quietly calls BINGO. This is not anunusual happening as it generally happens at leastten times each Monday. What was unusual was thefact that the person who had the BINGO was alsohelping to land an airplane with no fuel left on board.(Yes our Recorder, John W. Cooney III)
Sahib is a wonderful place. Overheard in thelounge, Don Vos, our Potentate, is “awesome!” Thiswas an unsolicited compliment and well deserved.
White attending an out-of-town Potentate’s Ball, the wife of one of my counterparts exclaimed, “SahibShriners’ Potentate’s Ball is the finest she has everbeen to” (another unsolicited compliment)
We still concentrate on having fun and fellowship, while attending to the needs of our nobility. Member-ship is also a high priority on our to-do list. So far, wehave had at least three restorations this year. We arelooking forward to many more. There are MasterMasons out there that just need to be invited to joinus in our fun and fellowship.
Change is inevitable, Growth is optional!

It is no wonder why the North American Shriners’ orAncient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine
(A.A.O.N.M.S.) are considered the “Worlds GreatestFraternal Organization.” It is because the Shrinemembership works so hard and strives to fund annu-ally our Shriner’s Hospitals for Children.
It is in this reflection, that I report our Gulf ShrineClub 2010 Baseball Spring Training event was an-other tremendously successful fundraiser. I want tothank each and every club officer, station captain, aswell as their dedicated ladies, friends and family thatcame out to work the ballpark with us this year. GulfShrine Club would never be as successful in thisevent, as we are, without the generous time and
efforts donated by this year’s group of 93 workers. What a great testament to serving mankind.
A very special Thank You to our Sahib ShrineDivan, Don and Carol Vos, Tom and Kaye Millaway,Bill and Stacie Lee Zurlo, as well as Dale and DonnaLaBell, for coming out and helping us work our con-cession stands. It is always a true honor to have thehighest of nobility in our midst.
It was so successful that we were requested byprofessional baseball’s newest venture, the additionof the new minor league baseball, Bradenton Ma-rauders, to operate this years summer game conces-sions. The Pittsburgh Pirates, along with concessionoperators Centerplate Inc., requested the Sahib

Shriners to work the concessions for this brand new70 game series, from April through August 2010.
Unfortunately we did not get the response orsupport from all clubs and units of Sahib Shrine andhad to decline the offer.
It is a lot of work, and a lot of fun, but, we needhelp. It was decided at the last minute, that theShriners would not attempt to man these games, so intalks with our Ill. Potentate Don Vos, we will work tomake it happen in the future. We would like to seemore Shrine Units get involved and work in thisfundraising effort.
Please call Jim Smith, Chief Aide, myself, or anyDivan member to be directed to the individual incharge of future games. We encourage and applaud
all Shriners' efforts to help. Bring your lady, or afriend and we will put you to work. This could becomeanother great annual fundraising activity.
We also had High Priest and Prophet Bill Zurlo, out to our Club’s April Luncheon, who gave us anupdate on the Shrine Hospitals and Sahib Shrine.
Bringing in new members and our continued fund-raisers are desperately needed.
Our next luncheon will be Tuesday, May 11, andwill be our last until September. Come out, join usand enjoy some of the best fellowship any Shrine cluband unit can have.
I am extremely proud to stand beside, walk withand work the many events that we do every year withthese outstanding men. God Bless.
Howdy, y’all! Here’s the latest from “Behind theOuthouse.”
The Hillbillies presented our 34th check for $1,000each to Sahib Shrine for the General Fund at theStated Meeting on April 1.
The Hillbilly Gals raised about $1,500 and theHillbilly Guys matched it, to submit a check for$3,000 for the Wheelchair Fund at the Shriners Hos-pital for Children in Tampa.
Our annual Hillbilly Hoedown was Saturday,March 13, and a great success, serving 170 people.Yee Haw! We had a “Hillbilly Band” derived of newcandidates and audience participation, playing hill-billy instruments, like washtubs, etc. Joe Humphreyswas a great Hillbilly Band Director. All had fun, andit was a hit.
Plans are underway for the Imperial HillbillyConvention to be held at Sahib Shrine next year,September 30 through October 2, 2011. We are form-ing planning committees and will need lots of volun-teers.
The Hillbillies have a fire truck for sale: 1960 F-600 12,000 original miles, $500 or best offer. Contactone of the Hillbilly officers if you are interested: DelRawlinson, George Mitchell, Mike Davenport or JohnYoder.

Okay then, ya’all are stuck with me this month, asBarry is busy with Scottish Rite amongst other
things. He wouldn’t tell me what; only that he wasunavailable to handle the assignment this month. It’s not hunting season, and roller derby season isabout finished, so I won’t even venture a guess as towhat he is up to. Anyway, I don’t want to hear anydebauching or lascivious comments about the contentor my writing style.
Now that we have that said, let us get on to moretantalizing topics. Unfortunately, the excitement levelof the Corps ‘tantalizing’ activities has waned a bitfrom Barry’s last report. However, there were a coupleof things he mentioned that do need some updating.
Our Annual Poker Run and Party were both agreat success again this year. It is always a fun timeand this year we had perfect weather for the event. There are so many to thank that it would take the rest

As soon as you read this, phone him at240-5737 with your contribution.
Last month we accepted four new members; BillAthas, John Cooney, Jim Watson and Vincent Flow. Then, over 40 nobles and ladies enjoyed an AprilFools Mixer with poached salmon or roast pork at theHeron Creek Golf Club. See accompanying photos. With our weather, warming up we had a good turnoutfor our “Thanksgiving in April” turkey picnic. Seeaccompanying photos by Phyllis Copher. MaddyWatson stood by with her MASH first aid kit in caseBob ‘Too Tall’ Somerville repeated his March picnicforehead collision with the top of our club trailer door!No reported walking wounded in April.
Each succeeding Tuesday morning breakfast atthe Olde World Restaurant in North Port, our ranksswell and activities multiply. (Most recently, 47 noblesand ladies) We even sang “Happy 90th Birthday” toChet Ray after he missed his cake one week! Recentguests included Dave Rubin’s acquaintance StephanosLoisou from Aleppo Temple, Wilmington, Massachu-setts; turns out that he and Don White grew uparound the corner from each other. Any Mason orShriner families are welcome to join us for our 7:30 a.m.breakfasts every Tuesday, 52 weeks a year where weusually enjoy some friendly banter and hi-jinks. SolSchuman donated a camel for us to ride in our parades!
Sickness and distress: Lady Jane Cornell is recov-ering from breaking her foot in three places. LadyEleanor Galloway suffered a stroke and family mem-bers are searching for rehabilitation and care facilityfor her and Noble Bob who suffers progressiveAlzheimer’s. Please offer support to these familiesand keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
And as we go to press, no one has correctly identi-fied our Club President Sam Cohen’s April “QuotableNotable” as President Harry S. Truman who said: “Ibelieve the proper thing to do is what I try to do, andthat’s right.” (And this is no April fool!) So yourbumbling scribe offers the following quiz for May.
of our allotted space for this article and then I wouldsurely leave someone out and be chastised the rest ofmy life, so one can only give a rousing applause for theCorps and their spouses and friends who made it allpossible. Special kudos go to Big Al Dahlstrom for hisinvigorating leadership and organizational skills thatput this event together and brought it to a terrificfruition. Of course, we all know where the real driv-ing force comes from, right? Hugh kudos go to Jan forher constant help and lovely presence. I do believethat all involved would only say, “Hey Al, you da man……. One More Year, One More Year.”
A final donation to Sahib in the amount of $6,000was presented to Ill. Sir Don at the April 1 StatedMeeting. When presented the check and he looked atit, I saw him start salivating and heard him mum-bling something about an upcoming cruise bar bill. Not to sure what he meant, but… We also presentedIll. Sir Don with a check for the Transportation Fundof $846 from our Hospital Days endeavors at St.Armands Circle.
Speaking of our illustrious leader, on the night ofIll. Sir Don’s ball many of you witnessed his entranceinto Sahib’s grand hall riding behind Barry Hart onBarry’s big white parade Harley, escorted by MotorCorps President John Hubbard in front and followedby Motor Corps Vice President Eric Bock. And a veryspectacular entrance it was.
Well, within the Corps, we have certain traditionsthat we take very seriously. For example, you mayhave seen one of the motorcycles parked out front or
going by with this gray furry thing hanging off of therear, and the rider sporting a fancy long and verycolorful necklace. The gray furry thing is a monkey. The honor of sporting this attire on one’s bike andneck is earned when one drops his motorcycle, re-gardless of the circumstances.
Another tradition we observe is that whoever re-quires a ride behind a Corps member, for whateverreason, will be awarded a pink monkey. The monkeyis pink as the second seat on a motorcycle is usuallyreserved for the rider’s female significant other andhas become fondly known as, “Riding Bitch” when onesits there upon. Therefore, at the April stated meet-ing, we also presented Ill. Sir Don with is very ownPink Monkey mounted on a small trophy platform tocommemorate the occasion. He was overjoyed to saythe least… Happy riding, Ill. Sir and stop whiningabout it!
Now, on to the future from when this was written. The weekend of May 21-23 will find a significantnumber of the Corps along with their families andfriends in Murphy, North Carolina., for our annualspring sojourn to Gary Nickols’ River’s Edge RVResort for his official spring opening. Of course, Gary’sresort just happens to be in the middle of some of thebest bike riding roads in North Carolina, which is thereason we all ride or haul our two-wheelers all that way.
It is also fast approaching the advent of ThursdayBiker Billie Burger nights. I am sure that Chef Wallyand all of his ‘wannabees’ will be there, slaving away

What in our world is happening? We don’t have totell you that it’s been an unseasonably cool

But, the weather didn’t dampen the 2010Sahib Shrine Circus, the successful Hospital Days col-lections, the parade in Arcadia, nor any of the otherwonderful and many Sahib and Shrine club functions. So, upon reflection, things are pretty good, after all!

Thanks to Lady Trudy Whitney for her generouscontribution of the late Noble Jack’s instruments
and equipment. Noble Andy Wright looked muchimproved at a March Big Band Dance; however, sadly,he has asked to be relieved of his duties as NoblemenDirector. Noble Jack Reynolds is still undergoingchemo but continues to have a positive attitude. Wepray that all our ill nobles will be back with us soon.Noble Bill Yoh, Sr., former president of the SahibBands, passed away recently in north Florida wherehe resided near his talented musician son, Bill Yoh,Jr. Our sympathy goes out to his family.
Kudos to Ill. Sir Jarrett Miller for his preparationand leadership of the March concert; it’s a shame thatthe audience wasn’t larger. Yours truly suffered somemechanical problems during the performance, butthanks to Bill Baker, Ben Boyles, and Bill Kelly theclarinet section survived.
The season has wound down. No more Noblemenrehearsals and no more gigs for either band untilOctober. Speaking of which, the Noblemen danceband schedules only six rehearsals for an entire year. This year, after the January rehearsal, the main hallwas not made available to us, and in March, we wereactually locked out of the building. Ill. Sir Don Vosand Recorder John Cooney have promised to fix thatproblem. At this writing, I’m confident that the April6 rehearsal will go as scheduled. As we all know, theNoblemen dance band is the sole source of the funds
that support the entire Band unit, an expensive unitto maintain. Here’s a bit of history.
In 1984, a committee was formed by PresidentMike Ash to suggest ongoing ways to finance theBand unit. Howard Wilson came up with the idea ofa dance band to do early evening dances in order toraise money that would support both bands. He sug-gested the name, The Noblemen, and patterned theidea after a similar program he had participated in atArarat Shrine in Kansas City. With the approval ofIll. Sir Ted Barton, the Tea Dances (now known as BigBand Dances) began 25 years ago. Appropriately, thismonth’s bio honoree will be Noble Howard Wilson.
Noble Wilson is a truly remarkable high achieverin several areas of human endeavor. Having earneddegrees with honors in engineering from both Avilaand Rockhurst Universities in Kansas City, he wenton to graduate studies at Missouri University and theUniversity of Michigan. Now retired as Supt. of Qual-ity Control for the Honeywell Corporation, he has co-authored several books on quality control that havebeen published internationally, and, since 1983, hehas been a book reviewer for the American Society ofQuality Control Engineers.
Noble Howard was introduced to music at the feetof a father who performed for local square dances inthe Ozarks. He later performed as part of the WilsonBoys country music band. An accomplished stringmusician, he sang and played at station KWTO in

Springfield, Missouri with other “notables” like ChetAtkins and Les Paul. While serving as an executiveengineer in his day job, he also played in the MissouriRiverboat Jazz Band, the Ararat Dance Band, and forvarious radio and TV productions.
Howard was bassist in the Noblemen dance bandfor 18 years. He and Mike Ash formed the Notablescombo that has performed for virtually every privatevenue in two counties over the past 25 years.
Howard is also an acclaimed athlete. He is listedin Who’s Who in Archery having won several regional
and national titles in the sport. He’s a regular on thegolf course and enjoys fishing and photography.
Howard and his lovely Lady Lucile, Past HighPriestess of Ladies Oriental Shrine, live graciously ina beautiful home at Misty Creek Country Club. Theyenjoy annual travel, visiting the far corners of theUSA, and especially visiting a granddaughter who isprima ballerina for a well-known American balletcompany.

Model Tsby Barry Hayes, Scribe, [email protected]
Greetings everyone, the Model Ts unit is enjoyinga good year so far. Participation is way up and
while breakdowns have been minimal so far thisyear. Unit camaraderie is very high, and everyoneseems to be enjoying life in the Model Ts.
The second Sunday in May has been set aside inhonor of motherhood. Many churches have specialservices in which they honor mothers of the congrega-tion. They usually present the oldest mom, youngestmom, and mom with the most children a corsage. There is a custom of wearing a carnation on Mother’sDay. A colored carnation means that the person’smother is living. A white carnation indicates that aperson’s mom is dead.
Years ago, England observed what they calledMothering Sunday. It came in Mid-lent. The firstsuggestion for a day set aside to honor mothers wasmade by Julia Ward Howe. She suggested that it beobserved on June 2, as a day dedicated to peace. Juliawas born in 1819 in New York to a prominent family. She was an American writer, lecturer and reformer. She was known as one of the most famous women ofher time. She wrote “The Battle Hymn of the Repub-lic”, which was inspired when she visited militarycamps in Washington, D.C., during the Civil War in1861. It became the major war song of the Unionforces. Julia became interested in the women’s move-
ment. She became the first president of the NewEngland Woman Suffrages Association.
Three years after Frank Hering of Indianalaunched his campaign for observance of Mother’sDay in 1904; Anna Jarvis began a campaign to anationwide observance of Mother’s Day. She chosethe second Sunday in May. She also began the customof wearing the carnation.
Jarvis’ own mother was honored on the first ser-vice at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church inGrafton, West Virginia, on May 10, 1908. Later, atthe general assembly in 1912, a delegate from AndrewsChurch introduced a resolution recognizing Jarvis asthe founder of Mother’s Day, and suggested thatMother’s Day be observed on the second Sunday inMay. President Woodrow Wilson signed a joint reso-lution in Congress on May 9, 1914, recommendingthat the federal government observe Mother’s Day.The next year, the president was authorized to pro-claim an annual holiday.

Masonic Digest
About The Craft: A Spring Ceremonial Editorialby Jerry Goacher, KYCH, KCCH, [email protected]
An organization many of us have found little op-portunity to know about is the “Order of the
Amaranth,” a Masonic organization composed ofMaster Masons and their properly qualified femalerelatives. In its teachings, the members are emphati-cally reminded of their duties to God, to their countryand to their fellow beings. They are urged to portray,by precept and example, their belief in the “GoldenRule” and by conforming to the virtues inherent inTruth, Faith, Wisdom and Charity, they can prove toothers the goodness promulgated by the Order.
Its Philanthropic project is the Amaranth Diabe-tes Foundation, and since 1972, the funds raised forThe Amaranth Diabetes Foundation Trust are di-rected towards research grants to aid in finding acure for diabetes. No expenses arededucted from donations given tothe American Diabetes Associa-tion. The extent of its charitablework and overall benevolence islimited only by the opportunitiesthat exist, and the ability to se-cure adequate funding.
A Brief HistoryAbout three hundred years ago inSweden, a little girl just six yearsold named Christina became theruler of that country. As she grewto womanhood, she was very fondof things beautiful, cultured andof social importance. During herreign as Queen, she created theOrder of the Amarantha for theladies and knights of her royal court, building itaround the character of Lady Amarantha, who wasportrayed as being a beautiful, virtuous and talentedLady of the Court. Queen Christina herself acted thepart of Lady Amarantha; and the name of the orderwas probably chosen because of the beautiful never-fading red Amaranthus flowers growing in profusionin Spain and Portugal. The order was perpetuatedand exists in the Royal Court of Sweden now. Asoriginally created by Queen Christina, the Royal andSocial Order of the Amarantha had no more connec-tion with Masonry than did the beautiful Catholiccathedrals constructed by masons and by builders ofold, before the structure of Masonry was developedand embodied in our present day Fraternity.
The “Order of the Amaranth” appeared in Francewhen the Lodges of Adoption were organized about1730, and in the middle of the 19th century, a number
of societies were started in America, in which femalescould become members. The two of concern here arethe “Order of the Eastern Star” and the “Order of theAmaranth.” In 1860, Brother James B. Taylor fromNewark, NJ, attempted to compose the material tostart a new “Society”. He learned that in 1653, QueenChristina of Sweden,, had combined a group of “SirKnights” and “Ladies” together to have “gala” par-ties. She called this group the “Order of theAmarantha”. He was so impressed with what he hadread, he copied many of the symbols and much of thephraseology used therein and even copied the name, the “Order of the Amaranth”.
Brother Robert McCoy, who was in control of the“Order of the Eastern Star” around 1870, decided
that it might be advisable to addtwo or more degrees to it. Then, in1873, he formed the “Rite of Adop-tion,” with the “Order of the East-ern Star” as the first, or initiatorydegree, and “The Queen of theSouth” as the second degree andthe “Order of the Amaranth” as thethird or highest degree. His planwas to have these degrees givenseparately but under the control ofone body. Both Eastern Star “Chap-ters” and Amaranth “Courts” wereincluded in the Adoptive RiteRitual. The Order of the Amaranthwas officially organized June 14,1873, in New York City as part ofthe Rite of Adoption and it wasstated: “This Organization shall
be known as the ‘Rite of Adoption of the World’ andshall consist of the degrees of the Eastern Star, theQueen of the South and The Amaranth.” In 1921, bymutual agreement, this requirement ceased. Theyare now completely separate organizations. Underthe jurisdiction of the Supreme Council there arepresently forty-three Grand Courts (each is state-wide), located in the United States, Canada, Austra-lia, Philippines and Scotland. Also, SubordinateCourts (local) in Hawaii, New Zealand and England(there are a few individual states in the U.S. that donot have Grand Courts).
The closest active Subordinate Courts of the “Or-der of Amaranth” are Venetian Court No. 39 whichmeets the 2nd Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. in Venice LodgeNo. 301, and Suncoast Court No. 73 which meets the1st Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Englewood Lodge No.360. Both courts are dark in July and August.

As most of you know by know, May 1 & 8 are thedates for the Scottish Rite Spring Reunion at the
Tampa Consistory. By the time you receive this thefirst weekend will probably already have taken place, but you can still make plans to join us on the 8th forthe second half of the degree work.
Our luncheon at the Sahib this month will take placeon the 14th. Come as you are and order off the menu.
On June 2, we’ll have our meeting and present the12th Degree at the Scottish Rite Building at 240 S.Tuttle Ave. This is one of the newer degree’s to beexemplified so it should be very interesting.
Hope to see you there.
The outline of a fish was one of the original signs ofa Christian and was often placed on their tombs
and worn as an ornament. As Masons, we realize thesignificance of a sign or symbol to identify a brothercraftsman, and so it was for Christians who traveledand spoke about Christ and his teachings. The earlyteachers were always in danger of being arrested andimprisoned. To protect themselves they devised thesign of the fish because in Greek the five initials ofthe words meaning “Jesus Christ Son of God, theSavior” were JXOTE (pronounced ick-tuss) which isthe Greek word for fish.
When a Christian met a stranger he thought mightbe a Christian he would draw a half of a fish in thesand; and the stranger, recognizing it, would drawthe other half.
As the Church developed, use of the fish declinedin favor of the sign of the Cross. Martin Luther, theGerman theologian, attempted to bring the fish back;
but was over ruled by the Christian Knights whopreferred to have the Cross on their banners. Luther’srationale for use of the fish was that the fish repre-sented quiet and peacefulness, while the cross was asymbol of death and violence. Luther’s main argu-ment was that the Knights did not have the right tokill and destroy in the name of the Cross of Christ.
Today, however many churches use the fish sym-bol, reviving the opinion of Clement of Alexandria, that it reminds Christians of the origin of their spiri-tual life in the waters of Baptism.
In the 26th Degree of Scottish Rite we give eachnew member a fish as a reminder to practice mercyand forgiveness and to be tolerant of the religiousbeliefs of all peoples of the world, since it from all ofthese that the truths of Freemasonry come.
Don’t forget the Reunion on May 1 and May 8which honors Ill. Robert Goldsmith, who was theSovereign Grand Inspector for Florida.
Members of the York Rite may seek further “light”by becoming members of additional York Rite
bodies. A review of one such body follows:Knight Masonry contains those degrees which are
worked within a Council of Knight Masons under thejurisdiction of the Grand Council of KNIGHT MA-SONS.
The Council of Knight Masons was constituted in1923 to look after the degrees previously worked byRoyal Arch Chapters, Preceptories of High KnightTemplars and even a Prince Rose Croix Chapter.
The history of the Judean people, as contained inthe Roll of the Law, including the Books of Ezra,Jeremiah and Esdras, records three outstanding epi-sodes intimately connected with Ancient Irish Uni-versal Masonry:
1. The building of King Solomon’s Temple CraftMasonry
2. The repairs of the Temple by King Josiah IrishRoyal Arch Masonry
3. The building of the Second Temple byZerubabbel after the return of the Tribes ofJudah and Benjamin from their seventy years ofcaptivity in Babylon, circa 536 B.C.E. KnightMasonry.
4. So by becoming a Knight Mason you are com-pleting a sequence intimately related to theteaching of Masonry.
There are three degrees in Knight Masonry formerlyknown as the Red Cross Degrees. They are Knight ofthe Sword, Knight of the East and Knight of the Eastand West (to be continued in the June issue.)

Shriners Hospitals for Children® is committed to providing expert orthopaedic and rehabilitative care to its patients with SCI. However, being able to offer the best care is dependent on accurate assessment and diagnosis, which requires being able to determine the exact level and extent of injury.
In pediatric SCI, this has been especially difficult due to the lack of pediatric-based tools; the standard test for assessing SCI was designed for adults. Researchers have found that age 6 may be the youngest age children are developmentally able to understand the instructions, and older children do not react well to some aspects of the test.
To fill the void in pediatric evaluations, researchers at Shriners
Hospitals for Children®, led by MJ Mulcahey, Ph.D., director of rehabilitation services and clinical research at the Philadelphia hospital, established the first assessment guidelines applicable to kids with SCI as young as 3 months old.
Funded by research grants from Shriners Hospitals for Children®, the pediatric version of the International Standards for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury, known as WeeStep, is an electronic learning module that compliments the established assessment program for adults with SCI. The WeeStep provides evidence-based methods to evaluate and classify the level and implications of SCI in children, based on established childhood developmental guidelines.
These new guidelines will help professionals determine the level and extent of SCI and allow for reasonable predictions or expectations for neurological recovery and for developing the best medical care plan for each patient. The WeeStep is available to medical professionals world-wide via the American Spinal Injury Association Web site.
Another effort to increase understanding of SCI and related problems is the establishment of the Pediatric Research Center, which opened in September 2009 in Philadelphia. The 23,000 square-foot facility, located in the new Temple University Medical School Education and Research Building across the street from Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Philadelphia, will be used primarily for research in neural (nerve) repair and
rehabilitation, including the spinal cord, neuromuscular injury and brain injury. The Center is under the direction of Michael Selzer, M.D., former director of rehabilitation research and development for the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Temple University and Shriners Hospitals for Children® aim to establish a translational research program where basic science developments can benefit children with neuromuscular conditions. Drs. Selzer and Mulcahey have strategically planned to connect basic science to clinical research so that new knowledge will be offered to children receiving care from Shriners Hospitals for Children®.
Currently, the health care system is funding approximately 12 research studies at the three hospitals with SCI programs involving different aspects of SCI, ranging from cell repair to quality of life issues. In addition, researchers at Shriners Hospitals for Children® share their expertise through academic affiliations at noteworthy institutions and by providing opportunities for post-doctoral researchers.
The emphasis on research and education is indicative of Shriners Hospitals for Children®’s total commitment to determining, as well as providing, the best care for children with SCI.
Shriners Hospitals for Children® depends on donations to fund all its programs, including research. For information on ways you can support this effort, please visit www.donate2SHC.org.

One reason Shriners Hospitals for Children® is
renowned world-wide as a leader in burn care is the
excellence and expertise of the health care system’s
staff. Two examples are Oscar Suman, Ph.D., and
Robert Sheridan, M.D.
Oscar Suman, Ph.D., an exercise physiologist and
director of the Children’s Exercise and Wellness
Center at Shriners Hospitals for Children® —
Galveston and associate professor at the University
of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, was honored
by President Barack Obama for his work in
helping children recover from burns at a White House
ceremony in January.
Dr. Suman was one of 100 researchers selected to
receive the Presidential Early Career Award for Sci-
entists and Engineers. The award is the highest honor
given by the government to outstanding scientists and
engineers who are in the early stages of their careers.
The award is meant to recognize scientists who have
demonstrated potential for leadership in developing
and discovering knowledge in science and technol-
ogy. Dr. Suman specializes in developing exercise
regimens to help children recover from burns.
“It is an extremely great honor to be nationally
recognized for the work we do at the Shriners Hospi-
tal in Galveston,” said Dr. Suman. “It is a refl ection
of the great work and dedication that our Galveston
staff and faculty exhibit daily. I hope to be able to
continue to devote my life to burn care research.”
The Presidential Early Career Award for Scien-
tists and Engineers Program is administered by the
National Science and Technology Council. Several
participating federal agencies submit nominations,
including the National Institutes of Health, which
nominated Dr. Suman.
The respect for Shriners Hospitals for Children®
among those in the burn care fi eld is indicated by
prestigious leadership positions held by hospital staff.
Robert Sheridan, M.D., assistant chief of staff of
Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Boston currently
serves as the president of the American Burn Asso-
ciation, a premier national organization dedicated to
improving the lives of those with burn injuries. In
addition, Dr. Sheridan is co-director of the Sumner
Redstone Adult Burn Unit at Massachusetts General
Hospital and an associate professor of surgery at
Harvard Medical School. Dr. Sheridan is certifi ed
in surgery and surgical critical care and is a fellow
of the American College of Surgeons, American
Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Chest
Physicians and American Association for the Surgery
of Trauma.
The expertise of the medical staff of Shriners Hos-
pitals for Children® is part of what allows the health
care system to change the world through caring for
kids every day.
