HEADQUARTERS CHAPTER NEWS by Janice Sakoda

I was pleasantly surprised to get a call from Hide Yamashita last month. It appears that I misspoke (or miswrote). Hide is NOT at Maunalani Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Hide is living at Pohai Nani Good Samaritan Retirement Community, in Kaneohe, where he has been for the past 2 ½ years. He remains active helping out at Pohai Nani, and still

umpires 12” softball games as time permits. (Photo of Hide Yamashita from Hana Hou, the Magazine of Hawaiian Airlines.)

I remember the name “Hide Yamashita” whenever I used to listen to UH baseball games many moons ago, where Hide

“umpped “for 18 years. He then umpired high school softball games before “graduating” to 12” softball games. At 93 years young, Hide is still going strong… just like the Ever Ready Bunny! We had a very nice chat and as typical of our small island, in the course of talking, Hide knows my uncle (from Moiliili baseball) and our family friend (from Dole Cannery). Hide, I hope you can come to our functions and we can chat

more.

It was great to see Bessie Fukumoto at our April Headquarters Chapter meeting. I believe it was her first time and hopefully, we’ll see more of her. Bessie’s daughter, Kuulei, and I were friends from intermediate school and I have good memories of hanging out at their house. For those of you who may know Kuulei, she is still living in Japan, teaching ukulele, English, and sometimes dances the hula there. We enjoyed the grapes and snacks Bessie brought, as well as Pat Akimoto’s

blueberry muffins and dim sum from Happy Day.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Saturday, May 8th. Please join us! If you don’t normally attend, let me know you may be attending. That way, if there are any last minute changes in date or

time, I’ll be able to let you know.

CHARLIE CHAPTER NEWS by Arlene Sato

The following people attended the C Chapter meeting on March 27: Kazuto Shimizu, Skip Tomiyama, Warren Iwai, Warren Yamamoto, Takako Umamoto, and Philip Matsuyama.

I joined the excursion to the Waipahu Plantation Village so was not able to attend the meeting. Thanks to Beau Tatsumura for acquiring a 20 passenger van to transport the veterans and wives down. Other members went on their own and met the group at the Village.

Ken Kaneshige (A), who has a History degree, was one of the knowledgeable docents. The passion for his job overflowed as he shared many interestingThe 00 stories with us and made our visit so enjoyable. Thanks to Bert Hamakado (D) and the Descendant’s Chapter for arranging this excursion. We had a nice picnic and learned a lot. I encourage those that have not been there yet, to take their families and ask for Ken to be your guide.

COLLATING DAY - MARCH 29, 2010 by Bernard S. Akamine

23 people volunteered to do the necessary work so the PPP could be mailed to our members. Despite a bit of confusion because of the new format, we were able to do the job. In attendance were Bernard Akamine, Nancy and Robert Arakaki, Ted Hamasu, Stacey Hayashi, Kenneth Higa, Jayne Hirata, Ed Ikuma, Don and Kimi Matsuda, Tom Nishioka, Seie Oshiro, Elsie Oshita, Nancy Sakaki, Arlene Sato, Dot Tamashiro, Drusilla Tanaka, Rikio and Evelyn Tsuda, Shelley Santo (daughter of Kazuma Taguchi of Hilo), Isami Yoshihara,, Dr. Tomo Hara from Japan, Ron Yamada (son of 442nd member the late Eiro Yamada), Chris Sketchly of the Seattle Nisei Vets Center, and Avin Oshiro.

Thank you to Isami and Avin for setting up the tables and chairs. There were plenty of goodies: Manju from Jayne Hirata-Epstein; banana-choco chip-pistachio bars from Shelly Santo; Pie from Chris Sketchly and scones from the Club.

Mainland Chapter didn't have their meeting in March as planned but we plan to have one this month to discuss plans for the October Reunion in Las Vegas. We are receiving inquiries about it as I'm sure many people want to make plans for attending the event. The Montana group just asked this past week about various plans. We were so glad to hear from them. Also questions from Ann Kabasawa and her group are forthcoming. I hope to gather some definite information regarding the banquet and hotel reservations so we can get the registration forms sent out soon.

On March 30th, we attended an excellent screening of a documentary titled "442: Live With Honor, Die With Dignity" which was directed by Junichi Suzuki, a Japanese national, who is a noted filmmaker who has been working in both the United States and Japan for many years. This feature-length documentary covered many aspects of the famous history of the 100/442 RCT including archival footage, interviews of vets, comments by historian Eric Saul, the Nisei in the Military Intelligence Service, and the WWII internments camps.

There is more information regarding this very worthwhile documentary on the Web Site: http://www.442film.com/. The next screening of “442: Live With Honor, Die With Dignity” will be Sunday, July 24 at the Aratani Theatre in Little Tokyo, at 11 am, 2 pm, and 5 pm.

We were fortunate to be invited as guests to the Japanese American National Museum's Annual Gala Dinner. This year, they celebrated their 25th Anniversary on April 10, Saturday, at the Hyatt Regency Plaza Hotel. Attended by more than a thousand people, it was a most successful and enjoyable event.

As stated in the article by Gwen Muranaka in the Rafu Shimpo, the Museum paid tribute to individuals and groups who helped found JANM many years ago. Special honors and were paid to Bruce Kaji (the founding President of JANM), Nancy Araki (JANM’s first staffer), the late Col. Young O. Kim, Sam Fujikawa (C), Chip Mamiya [son of the late Buddy Mamiya (D)], Hitoshi Sameshima (Military Intelligence Service), Manabi Hirasaki (522 Field Artillery, 442nd), Cooke Sunoo (Community Redevelopment Agency), and Jan Perry (Los Angeles

City Councilwoman). Credit was given to former State Senator Art Torres, who pledged to introduce a bill in the state legislature for $1 Million dollars toward the museum.

Following the gourmet dinner a welcoming speech was made by Ernest Doizaki, Chairman, Board of Trustees and Akemi Kikumura Yano, President and CEO of JANM, The evening was brought to a fitting end with the Master of Ceremonies Frank Buckley, congenially guiding the evening to a very wonderful eventful celebration.

Very important message to everyone - - - please be careful about receiving calls of help by email or phone calls as there is a very bad scam going around. Do not be fooled by requests for money unless you check it out FIRST. Targeted are senior citizens, especially, and most recently targeting veterans. These scam artists read the obituaries to get family names to use in their calls or emails to fool people about how well they know the family and such. The important thing is to double check before acting - like going to Western Union to send any money or giving out your credit card number.

Please take care and keep safe.

BAKER CHAPTER NEWS by Bernard Akamine

For the April 3 meeting, six veterans, six descendants, and four spouses came and enjoyed eating the delicious Portuguese bean soup that Evelyn Tsuda prepared, along with tossed vegetable salad and French bread. Bert Hamakado brought a box of Spanish rolls; Susan Tanaka Hokama donated a tray of “Pig in a Blanket” and another tray of hot cross buns—all homemade; Gary Nakayama brought a large jar of takuan. For dessert, Marie Yoneshige made colorfully decorated cupcakes and the best okoshi; Mieko Muroshige sent plenty mochi via her daughter Susan, and Drusilla Tanaka brought Easter cookies. Jessie Nakayama won the door prize. Thanks to everyone who helped with the setup and cleanup.

The Chapter received generous donations from Charlie Tanaka, Mieko Muroshige, Sonsei Nakamura, and the family of Hisami Fujita. Thank you very much! With the donation from Hisami Fujita’s family came a handwritten thank you card, signed by his daughter Lillian Miura. We hope Hisami will have a chance to visit us at a Baker Chapter event.

Hope more descendants will come to our meeting after seeing the friendly faces in the photo of the 6 descendants that came to the recent Baker Chapter meeting. From left to right in the top photo are Gary Nakayama (Roy Nakayama’s son), Drusilla Tanaka (Bernard Akamine’s daughter). and Susan Hokama (Charlie Tanaka’s daughter) and in the bottom photo are Susan Muroshige (Kenneth Muroshige’s daughter), Ann Ishida-Ho (Seiso Kamishita’s daughter) and Bert Hamakado (Masami “Fat” Hamakado’s son). We need the descendants to keep our chapter and Mother Club going. The suggestions we Bakerites gave to Ann Ishida-Ho about the membership eligibility should spur us to get more of our descendants involved.

Congratulations to Tom and Miyako Tsubota who will be celebrating

their 68th wedding anniversary!

Next meeting is on Saturday, May 8 (changed to the 2nd Saturday in May), same time, same place. Please call in your lunch reservation to Robert Arakaki.

DOG CHAPTER NEWS by Joy Teraoka

On April 3 Dog Chapter held its monthly meeting with five members in attendance. Susan Muroshige, Grant Administrator of the 100th Infantry Battalion Education Center was also present.

At the meeting, it was decided to waive the dues to Dog Chapter members who have already paid dues to the Descendants’ Chapter. This change will be made in the Dog Chapter Bylaws.

We welcomed Susan Muroshige to our meeting to update us on the progress she has made toward establishing the Education Center. After expanding on her plans, she asked for feedback and comments from the members. Her efforts are to be commended. Please refer to the April 2010 edition of the Puka Puka Parade for highlights of her report. A project office has been established in one of the 100th’s apartments next to the clubhouse. Drusilla Tanaka has been hired as the Project Coordinator.

Remember to send in your reservations for the 68th Anniversary Banquet by June 1, 2010.

Important Notice: Our next Dog Chapter meeting is set for Saturday, May 8 at 10:00 am. It was originally scheduled for Saturday, May 1 however because of a conflicting meeting (100th Bylaws Committee) we had to move it to another day. We will contact those of you who usually attend our meetings by phone or written notice. We apologize for this inconvenience.

PUNCHBOWL

VOLUNTEERS by Drusilla Tanaka

Thanks to Kenneth Higa (F/C), Robert Arakaki (B) and his wife, Nancy; Isami Yoshihara, brother of Hisashi Yoshihara (A), and Stanley Tanaka, nephew of Haruo Kawamoto (A/KIA) for joining the ranks of the Punchbowl Volunteers! Your brand new name tags and door signs are ready for your first day on the job.

During our last turn of duty, a woman from Idaho asked for help locating her uncle’s gravesite. After we realized that he was a pilot during the Korean War and was declared missing in action, we directed her to the four-inch thick binder which lists the names that are engraved on the Honolulu Memorial’s Court of the Missing. It took a few minutes to locate her uncle’s name, but that confirmed that his name is indeed on one of the walls of the Court. We gave her some paper and a pencil to make a tracing of his name, and kept our fingers crossed that she would find it. More than an hour later, she returned to the Information Center, all smiles, returned the pencil, and thanked us. She said her mother often mentioned that her younger brother was memorialized at Punchbowl and this woman was determined to find his name on this trip. She would be returning to Idaho with a precious souvenir from Hawaii to give to her mother.

There is always a need for more volunteers for this important program of community service. Please contact Drusilla Tanaka at 235-1343 or by e-mail, [email protected].
