Vilma’s Cooking CornerCheesecake SliceFor base:Lightly grease a lamington pan. Line base with paper extending over sides. You need 250g Golliwog biscuits or if you like use plain chocolate biscuits finely crushed. Add 60g of melted butter to biscuit crumbs, mix well in bowl. Press evenly over base of prepared pan. Refrigerate for 30 minutes or until firm. You now need:Two 250g packets cream cheese softened! cup caster sugar! cup sour cream 2 teaspoons gelatine 1 tablespoon waterTwo 45g Violet Crumble bars, broken into small piecesBeat cream cheese, sugar and sour cream in a small bowl with electric mixer until light and fluffy.Sprinkle gelatine over water in a cup; stand it in a small pan of simmering water until dissolved, cool slightly.With motor operating, pour gelatine mixture into cream cheese mixture. Fold in Violet Crumble bars, pour in mixture over crumb crust.Refrigerate until set. Cut into squares, decorate with strawberries

Old Photos WantedTo coincide with the 150 year celebrations I would like to try and get a collection of photographs together which depict Binnaway’s past. I am looking for photos which show buildings which now no longer exist, sporting teams (hopefully with names), events of significance eg opening of the new school, climatic events eg floods particularly if they are of the town itself and droughts, occupations and the work they performed. If you have any of these type of photo or something that you think might be suitable I would be most grateful if I could arrange to get a scanned copy of the photo. All original photos will be returned to their owner. Over time these photos might be used in a book, displayed for the 150 year celebrations and hopefully used in the end as part of a muesem. To celebrate youth week Binnaway Central Schools’ SRC decided to hold a Mini Olympics on the last day of Term1. All students were placed in a particular county. These were Australia, France, Spain, Jamaica, Canada, Japan, England and Brazil. Various sporting challenges were undertaken by the teams who were dressed in their countries colours. Points were awarded for participation, cheering, sportsmanship and successes. The challenges included an obstacle course, sack races, table tennis, basketball hoops, three legged races, Kee’an and egg & spoon races. The last event was a popular tug of war. At the end of the day the winners were presented with medals, accompanied by countries national anthem. England received the gold medal, France received the silver medal and Jamaica received the bronze.The day was extremely enjoyable with much fun being had by all. Many thanks to the SRC and Ms Lumber for planning and organising such a great day.
The Karate Kids by Robert AdamsOn Monday the 28th of March Rachel Andrews and Robert Adams went for their yellow tips in the karate at the dojo (Youth Club) at Coonabarabran. Instead of yellow tips they skipped a grade to yellow belt they were very excited. This is what happened. Well first we started off doing our usual bow then we warmed up by jogging around the mat. Then we started for real. We went in the ring and we practised the Kata. Then they tested us. We were nervous. After we got tested they gave out the awards and of course the belts. I was sure I would get yellow tips. This is a picture of the kids getting a photo taken with their awards and their belt on.

The writer of this column could be accused of gender bias, when recording the history of our town and the people who contributed to it. I hasten to assure readers, that although early Binnaway history goes back perilously close to the time when women chained themselves to public buildings and burned their underwear to win sexual equality, courageous, resourceful and dedicated women have over the years, contributed much to Binnaway society.
Lillian Carlyle is typical of the women that gave up the comforts and conveniences of city life, to build a life and a home in the bush.
To pick up the threads of this story, one needs to wind back the time machine a hundred and so years.
This takes us back to the period when the Naseby and the McWhirter families arrived and built the Binnaway Inn on the bank of the Castlereagh. When the ambitious John McWhirter decided to advance his commercial interests and built the Exchange Hotel in what is now Myall Street, it became the focal point around which the town started to take shape. By the time World War 1 ended, a viable community was in place.
Starting from the river or the Western end of the street, the stock-yards stretched back to the present Yeulba property. Then there was Arthur Greenhalgh's butcher shop, the Exchange Hotel, Charles Ah Nim's General Store and Wessell and Vowles black-smith shop.
On the opposite side of the street was the Mechanic's Institute. It served as community centre, concert hall, dance hall, picture theatre, church and court-house.
The public school was delayed because of opposition to it being sited "Too close to a public house, but was eventually built on it's present location.
When the river crossing at "Riverdale" was made trafficable, the Coonabarabran Road was diverted to run along the East bank of the river, when it got to Binnaway, it took a left turn at the School Principal's residence to run thru the town's business centre and then on to Coolah.
The road converged with Myall Street at a very acute angle - bad town planning or the complete lack of it, that gave us the strange configuration of streets, we now refer to as the Five Ways.
The town continue to expand in this direction and by the 1920's, there was Harry Doran's barber shop and billiard saloon, Archie Magick's bakery, Clarrie Botfield's wool and skin store, Binnaway's first motor mechanic - Carl Spies, The ABC bank (later to become the Bank of NSW, and eventually Westpac Banking Corporation).
Next to the bank was Frank Law - general store, produce merchant and Post-master. Jack Starr operated out of a modest little building and the last place you could buy a bag of lollies before taking on the bone-jarring journey to Coolah was Allan and Lillian Carlyle's "refreshment room", come cake shop, come lollie shop, cum newsagency.
The accidental burning down of the Mechanics' Institute was a sad blow for town, but a significant turning point in the lives of the Carlyle family. Allan was an amateur projectionist and seized the opportunity of going into the cinema business.
Being light on in finance, he settled for an open-air theatre with the intention of up-grading at a later date. Opening night
was set down for a night in the middle of June, with the temperature around freezing point and with frost hanging in the air.
The extreme conditions did not deter the local film fanatics and the premiere played to a standing room only audience.
The picture theatre business proved to be a money spinner for the Carlyle family for a number of years, but Allan Carlyle
was not a robust man and his health started to fail. To the extent that much of the work in running the
business fell to his diminutive wife. She was about 5 foot 3 and tipped the scales
around 8 stone (about 50 kilos).Her duties included long hours in the shop, in the kitchen, in the office and eventually to the manual operation of the film projector.
Allan eventually became an invalid, and when Gilbert McWhirter arrived on
the scene, he sold the theatre license to Gilbert and the cafe business to Gilbert's son
Robert.The Carlyle family retired to a house in Railway Street, but
the family - 3 boys - Allan, Neville and Raymond were all in their school years and in need of parental assistance for their up-bringing and to complete their education.
By that time the railway had reached Binnaway, and Lillian successfully applied for a license to run the railway refreshment room. The facility provided by the railway was very basic, and Lillian had to do most of her cooking at home.
A normal routine for her was to prepare the evening meal, tend to her invalid husband and sick son Raymond, and after seeing that the family was bedded down for the night, retire to the kitchen to cook the cakes and pies for the following day's trading. It was well into the early hours of the morning before she rested herself. Her pleasant manner and helpful service assured the success of the refreshment room venture, but it was the excellence of her meat pie that earned her a state wide reputation.
Binnaway became synonymous with Mrs Carlyle's pies. When Binnaway was mentioned in conversation people would say "that's where you get those lovely pies". An elderly matron from one of the North Shore suburbs , who visited Binnaway frequently was heard to say, "the long train journey knocked the stuffing out of me, but I always look forward to arriving at Binnaway and munching into a couple of Mrs Carlyle's delicious pies, they are utterly divine!" Unusual for people to use such celestial language to describe a humble meat pie, but such was the popularity of this 100% Binnaway product. It was suggested that she commercialise her meat pie recipe, but she dismissed then proposition out of hand and said she was quite happy as she was.
She loved living in Binnaway, she loved running the refreshment room, and her only ambition was to see that "her boys" got off to a good start in life and turned out to be good, useful citizens. Her simple wish was fulfilled. Allan built up a very successful business in Wingham and was elected as the town's mayor. Neville, who worked as a grocer in Guy's store, went to Sydney and entered the boat-building industry. He built himself a sea-going yacht. It's sleek, racy lines turned heads on the Sydney water-front, as did the big bold brass name-plate that said - BINNAWAY.

Following the obtaining of a grant from the Community Building Partnership Program earlier this year, work has commenced on the caretakers flat which is being built in part of the gang shed. The flat will be a one bedroom dwelling with a combined bathroom and laundry and open plan lounge, dining, kitchen area.A number of members of the group catered for the recent Billy Blooms Open Day providing morning and afternoon teas well as sandwiches for those who wanted them at lunch time. Thanks must go to the small group who worked out there,those responsible for setting up and taking down the marquee and those who cooked for and served the morning and afternoon teas.Anyone who is interested in supporting the Rail Heritage Group is welcome to come along to a meeting and join. Some younger, more able bodied members would be very welcome to help on days such as the Billy Blooms Open Day and at working bees held to maintain the buildings and surrounding lawn and gardens.

Bush fire danger period endsTuesday, 29 March 2011
The NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) has ended the statutory Bush Fire Danger Period in Castlereagh Zone.
From 1 April 2011 fire permits will no longer be required for the Gilgandra and Warrumbungle Local Government Areas.
“Although fire permits are no longer required, property owners must still exercise caution and follow guidelines regarding the use of fire,” said Inspector Steve O’Callaghan Community Safety Officer.
“Residents must notify neighbouring land owners and their local fire authority at least 24 hours before burning, as well as taking appropriate action to ensure containment and control of fire so it doesn’t escape and cause damage.
“Penalties still apply for failing to notify neighbours that you are lighting a fire and for allowing fires to escape.
“Even though the weather is cooling down, there is still the potential for fires to threaten life, property and the environment.”
If residents do wish to conduct burning activities, they should ask the RFS for advice and for environmental approvals where required if burning Native Vegetation and:
•Give the RFS and neighbours 24 hours notice.•Check weather conditions/Total Fire Bans can still be called.•Delay the burn if concerning winds are forecast.•Create proper fire breaks.•Have adequate water resources and fire fighting equipment on hand.•Supervise the fire at all times.•Call Triple Zero (000) immediately if fire escapes.
“We encourage people to seek advice from their local RFS Fire Control Centre on how to safely conduct hazard reduction activities such as slashing and burning, and how to prepare their homes for the next bush fire season,” said inspector O’Callaghan

NW Equestrian Expo is on track for a winning event ___________________________________________ Entries are pouring in from all over NSW from schools keen to compete in a prestigious horse riding event held in Coonabarabran. Organisers say that plans are well under way for the 2011 North West Equestrian Expo to be held at the local showgrounds from 3 to 7 June. Competitor numbers are on track with the record entries received last year and there is strong enquiry from many schools that have not attended the event before. For the first time two schools from Canberra will be represented at the event. The sponsorship committee has been overwhelmed with the support received from local business. Even those who do not directly benefit from the influx of competitors to the town recognise the enormous economic benefits to the community. “Every business that we have approached has been very positive in supporting the event”, said Brenda Grant, sponsorship representative on the Expo Committee. “We have 58 rug sponsors, 8 event sponsors and 2 major sponsors already confirmed. “This reflects the confidence the whole community has in the event.” The North West Equestrian Expo is recognised as a leader in school based equestrian sports in Australia, explained committee chairman, Kevin Sharp. “We have a committee of 12 who work throughout the year on planning and administration to ensure the event is a quality opportunity for school students to compete,” stated Mr. Sharp. “We have Sydney Olympics course designer, John Vallance, bringing his wealth of experience to the showjumping course. “Daryl Burgess, assistant Technical Delegate for the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky, has assisted in various capacities with the Expo cross country course.” 2011 sees the introduction of Team Penning, which has been added to the extensive list of events on offer at Expo. SHORT AND TO THE POINT THIS MONTH……The ‘STOP’ signs in and around town, in particular the signs at the railway crossings upon the Coolah Road (Warrumbungle Way), and Ropers Road. These signs are in place for good reason. If you have not thought about it!!! Train versus car, normally results in the train winning. The last thing that I want to be doing is going to an accident and picking up pieces of car and people (It’s not a nice thing to do). I have received some complaints in the past weeks in relation to these ‘STOP’ signs and motorists driving straight through them. Over the coming months you may see me or the highway patrol police sitting at these signs. Please come to a complete stop. Or you may be the recipient of a $258 fine and the loss of 3 demerit point from your licence. I don’t want to sound to harsh, however it has become a serious issue of concern. DONATED STEER KICKS OFF FUNDRAISERBINNAWAY LIONS CLUB ANNUAL CHARITY WALK/ RIDE FOR CANCER WEEK-END A GREAT SUCCESS.The Binnaway Lions club held their annual walk/ride for cancer charity ride on the 9th & 10th of April with the weekend being very successful once again despite the numbers being down a little on previous years due to other events being on in the area which could
not be avoided. The event has grown over the years going from 5 horse riders to 70 and several walkers and also some braved the track to ride their bikes. The ride commenced from
the Binnaway showground on the Saturday morning proceeding down the main street of Binnaway out the Bourke & Halls road and having lunch on Donny & Margaret Halls property Killara with lunch on the picturesque Greenbar creek swimming hole. Lions cooked a beautiful BBQ lunch with the sausages donated by Tony & Lyn Fenton and the mince for the rissoles donated by Boysies Butchery Coonabarabran which everyone enjoyed with a little rest before proceeding through Killara onto Mobla and back via Wingabutta road to arrive back tat the showground to have time for everyone to feed and bed their horses down for the night and to have a couple of hours of sitting around enjoying a drink and an odd story from the days events with some finding some muscles that they didn’t know they had. The charity auction was very well supported with donations from Binnaway, Coonabarabran, Coolah and Dubbo businesses.The 3 auctioneers Larry Tolmie, Bill Tatt & David Grant kept the crowd entertained. Some of the stand out items was a Painting donated by Peter Ryan, Marg Scifleets brother from Sydney made a grand total of $650 a Tooheys esky donated by the Exchange hotel fetched $520 , Electric fence unit donated by Binnaway Rural supplies made $300, a Tigers football gurnsey signed by the first grade players donated by Larry & Pam made $280 The auction grossed $5100.00.After the auction everone enjoyed a feast prepared and served by the Lions club volunteers with some help from some of the Binnaway year 9 & 10 students who helped set up for the evening meal. Tim Dennis from Dubbo gave his time and equipment for free supplying the sound system for the auction and music which was enjoyed by all unfortunately Tim had another event to attend later on in the night so had to leave a little earlier than normal.
On Sunday morning the Lions volunteers rocked up again to supply us with a hearty breakfast of bacon, eggs and sausages all supplied to us by Andrews Friendly store also thankyou to Guy & Narelle Andrews for the use of their cool room without this facility it would be impossible to keep all of the food cold.After breakfast everyone saddled up ready for the second day of the walk& ride heading out the Coonabarabran road and then proceeding through “Headingley’ Swegn Smith & Sandra Taylor’s property for a very scenic ride along the Castlereagh river and then coming back through Donlons property “Clonlohan”. property back on the Coona road then through to Keith & Penny Hawkless property “Eastwood” where the Lions once again excelled with a BBQ lunch by the dam. After lunch the clouds became very thick in the sky and it was not long after we set for the home stretch through Ivan & Ellen Sternbecks property “Sherwood” the heavens opened up. Never the less we just kept going on the final jouney through Kevin & Del Stuarts property before returning onto the Coona road and back to the Binnaway showground where everybody packed up and headed for home after having a great weekend. As we still are receiving donations we do not have a final figue as this goes to print but we will have a full report next issue.

On the Saturday morning of the 2 April, more than a dozen ladies from the Binnaway District gathered at the Technology Room of Binnaway Central School all eager to learn Patchwork for Beginners. Mentor, Colleen Beer, from Coolah Country Patchwork showed the group just how easy and rewading patchworking can be. Starting with a JellyRoll, some material and a piece of wadding, then utilising a sewing machine and an iron, the ladies soon were working on their masterpieces with lots of laughter and encouragement. Some ladies had never used a sewing machine before but the entire group completed their very own piece of patchwork - ATable Placemat, in just a couple of hours. No two placemats were alike and the end products all had a professional appearance. Colleen Beer retired from school teaching recently and with a friend, Kathy Reinfleish opened the Coolah Country patchwork store in Coolah, to cater for those who love to sew or had always wanted to learn how to Patchwork.Comments at the end of the day wre: "Fantastic", "Amazing", "Fun", "Terrific teacher", and "Easier than you think, even us non-sewers can do this!", and "WHEN'S THE NEXT LESSON?".The group plans to do something similar in the near future, the tentative name for the group will be "The Sewing Circle".If you are interested in sewing type crafts this would be the group of you, if you're still unsure why not give Barbara a call, 68441700, we really look forward to seeing you next time.

MEDIA RELEASEHOW TO USE A “SEAGULL” INTERSECTION
Warrumbungle Shire Council’s Road Safety Officer Ken Smith said further concern has been raised regarding driver error at the “seagull” intersection at the Warrumbungle Way and the Newell Highway, 6km South of Coonabarabran. The Warrumbungle Shire Council Traffic Committee has received information regarding incorrect use of this intersection and wish to increase local knowledge of the intersection.“Seagull” intersections get their name from the pattern that the two right turn lanes make when looking down from the air. Seagull intersections allow one direction of traffic to travel straight through without stopping. Drivers turning right into the side road at the intersection simply merge into a separate lane, which forms one 'wing' of the “seagull”. Here, they meet the opposite carriageway and the side road. Traffic turning right from the side road, simply cross the intersecting carriageway (south bound traffic) and drive up the other 'wing' of the “seagull”, accelerate and merge with the main flow of traffic.The Warrumbungle Way and Newell Highway “seagull” intersection provides crash protection for vehicles when a driver is making a right hand turn towards Coonabarabran from Warrumbungle Way onto the Newell Highway.To take advantage of that protection, the driver of a vehicle turning right from Warrumbungle Way must turn to the north bound right hand lane as defined by the line markings. It is an offence to cross the unbroken lane line and drive directly into the left hand lane and potentially into the path of a fast moving truck or other vehicle.The right hand lane allows the driver to accelerate and to safely merge with faster moving traffic in the left hand lane. The ‘system’ allows for slow accelerating vehicles like buses, trucks and vehicles towing caravans. Once the unbroken lane line becomes broken the driver can merge to the left lane when safe. The left hand turn lane from Coonabarabran into Warrumbungle Way allows a safe exit from the Newell Highway. This allows the turning vehicle to slow down safely in order to make the turn, while still allowing traffic on the Newell Highway to continue travelling relatively unobstructed. thinking about how much life changes when you become a Mother.
Most Mums will tell you that Motherhood is the most exhausting, challenging and at times the most nerve racking thing they
have ever done and yet finish the sentence with‘ BUT THE BEST’! I think this quote sums it up –“‘We never totally understand the love of a Mother until we become one”I hope all the Mums in Binnaway get spoilt on Sunday – you deserve it!
