q&a JaiMie hoDgsonneW Music eDitor – nMe MagazineWhat shows have been the best you’ve seen at The Great Escape and why? ‘Warpaint’ at the NME Radar party was pretty special last year. The timing was perfect for them. They were just blowing up, and it made for a roadblock crowd and a magic atmosphere.

What do you most look forward to when coming to Brighton for The Great Escape? I grew up in Brighton, so I just look forward to coming home and acting like a petulant teenager for a few days.

Any secret rock & roll memories you can share with us from TGE? I remember watching ‘Warpaint’ and ‘Egyptian Hip Hop’s’ friendship’s blossom into something quite special last year; I left them all frollicking down to the beach for some kinda late night fire ritual... I’ve heard it has proved a powerful enduring bond...

Who will you be hanging out with over the TGE weekend? My mum, my sister, my school pals, the guy that runs the Dolphin Derby, and all the people playing the NME Radar showcase, as long as they’re friendly...

What bands do you think we should see this year and why? Both ‘Big Deal’ and ‘Cults’ are great fun live, ‘2:54’ are gonna be huge, and ‘Grimes’ is ploughing her own furrow. So all that lot....

Past years have seen surprise, secret gigs from the likes of Babyshambles – who would you like to see rock up unannounced in 2011? ‘Eyehategod’.

Page 3: May 2011 Listings

What shows have been the best you’ve seen at The Great Escape and why? The cruelly underrated ‘Dead Kids’ walking on the ceiling, being held upside down by the crowd and ‘Friendly Fires’ putting on a jaw-dropping indie-rave micro-extravaganza. Also, ‘Glasvegas’ lived up to the hype and ‘White Lies’ demonstrated their gloomy anthems were destined to outgrow venues of capacity 1,000 and below.

What do you most look forward to when coming to Brighton for The Great Escape? Chips, walks on the pier and getting a delegate pass so I get to skip the queues. I do say sorry to people when I do that, though. Even though inside I’m not really sorry. Sorry!

q&a niaLL DohertYassociate eDitor (revieWs) – q Magazine

Any secret rock & roll memories you can share with us from TGE? I can’t think of anything. And what I can think of I can’t say.

Past years have seen surprise, secret gigs from the likes of Babyshambles - who would you like to see rock up unannounced in 2011? I’d love to see Foals back at Great Escape – I don’t think they’ve played it in a few years, and they’re probably due to unveil some inevitably ace new material soon.

Who will you be hanging out with over the TGE weekend? I will be hanging out with close friends – nights at The Great Escape often end in the sort of alcohol-induced haziness that you need to keep your nearest’n’dearest close for directions back to the hotel.

What bands do you think we should see this year and why? ‘The Vaccines’, ‘Warpaint’, ‘The Joy Formidable’. I’d also thoroughly recommend checking out two hotly-tipped Canadian bands; first, Calgary noiseniks ‘PS I Love You’, who sound like a punk-rock Smashing Pumpkins, and secondly ‘Braids’, who resemble a very, very stoned ‘XX’.

q&a natasha haDDaDgreat escape – prograMMerWhat does your role with The Great Escape involve before and during the event? I program and book the festival. This involves working with a range of partners in order to ensure each stage is booked to represent the various stage hosts we collaborate with, as well as covering a wide range of music that we would hope to appeal to our festival goers. I spend a lot of time researching international bands as well, as we are an international festival. This year I got to go to Dublin to check out the scene there, as Ireland is our focus country.I also work on social networking, managing the Twitter and blog. It’s important for me to know what people are thinking as it’s key for TGE to improve on itself year on year, and how better to do that than to talk to people.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to get into working for music events and festivals? If it’s a festival, work out which one you enjoy most and try to get a placement with them. Even if it’s just volunteering for the weekend, you are likely to meet the people who you could show your potential to. When I came to the office 4 yrs ago, I started as an intern and I now book the festival... and I’m not the only one on the team that came through that way. Just be prepared to work hard and be passionate!

Which bands have been the best/most memorable that you have worked with? It’s been amazing having some of today’s biggest artists like Adele and Mumford play early on in their careers.

What shows have been the best you’ve seen at The Great Escape and why? I haven’t been able to see many shows because I’m working but last year I saw Tinie Tempah who absolutely slayed it. Also the Groove show was amazing as the whole TGE team eventually ended up in there dancing like lunatics and singing along to all the words.

What do you consider your biggest achievement while working for the festival? Seeing the calibre of artists grow every year, which I hope is a result of our team’s ability to produce an ever evolving event with passion. This year I was also able to indulge completely and book a contemporary classical event with the award winning Max Richter and Hauschka, which is a true achievement I think.

What do you most look forward to at The Great Escape? You honestly can’t get a better feeling than watching a band have a great time on stage, which then feeds out to the audience. It sounds cheesy but seeing people having incredible experiences makes the festival.

What bands do you think we should see this year and why? Alex Clare for his voice and to dance, Warpaint to sway in awe, Stealing Sheep for a moment of simple joys, Villagers again for his resounding pure talent, The Jezabels to hear new songs that you’ll walk away singing, Grouplove for their Mumford-like energy, Factory Floor for pure wall of sound awesomeness.

Any secret rock & roll memories you can share with us from TGE? Haha, if I told you they wouldn’t be secret now, would they ;)
