Wishing Year 11 of 2012 Well

Earlier this week we held our usual end of school

party for Year 11. It was a lovely last day for them and a wonderful atmosphere across the school as they signed their leavers’ books, wore their leavers’ hoodies and tearfully said their farewells to staff. Indeed, there were many tears as they realised that they were leaving, with all the memories of their last 5 years. Mr Roche (Director of Student Progress-Year 11) reminded them of many of their most memorable moments with a film collection of photographs dating back to their first year in the school. There was much laughter at pictures of so many of them looking so young. The party was a celebration of their time at the school with each tutor group contributing to the entertainment and our own version of “Britain’s Got Talent”. It ended with

speeches of farewell, a toast from me to the whole year group and then a calm departure from school. It was a wonderful occasion, reflecting their commitment to the school and the warm relationships established over their time here. They were happy and we were very proud of them. But, of course, it’s not quite over yet as there are still exams to come and work to be done, well into June. They have worked hard and are still doing so. We expect great things of them but I should like to take this opportunity to wish them all every success with their GCSEs and their future and to thank them for all they have brought to the school. We shall see many of them back in July for their “Prom” at the Winter Garden on 5th July. Results day is Thursday, 23rd August when they can

come in after 10.00am to collect their results. Can I also take this opportunity to remind you that our responsibility does not end here. If there are problems relating to results or moving on to college or a need for advice or a reference then we are always very happy to help and support, no matter how many years have passed since leaving.

CHARITYOver the years, the school has encouraged students to support a range of charities. This year there has been a particular emphasis with each year group setting itself a target to raise as much money as possible for their selected charities. Students decide on how they are going to raise funds and organise the activities. I am hugely impressed by their energy and the innovative ideas they have to raise funds and believe that supporting those in greater need than ourselves

is an important value for young people to understand and develop. So far this year over £3,000 has been raised by the various groups around the school. In this edition you will read about our on-going support for the Hawassa project which has raised significant funds over the years. Our community fair, visited by Stephen Lloyd MP, was a great success involving vast numbers of students who gave up their afternoon to support their charities. Last week the Creative and Media Diploma group raised over £500 to support a school in India, which was an amazing achievement.I am very proud of all those involved and thank all of you who support your children in these activities. The funds raised are going to excellent charitable groups, all of whom are very grateful for the support they receive from Willingdon students.

The Rotary Challenge at Ratton School on Tuesday 6th of March was very exiting. We were taken in the mini-bus by Roy, who has just retired after many years of working at Willingdon School. When we got there we met the five other Eastbourne schools competing, with four Year 8 students in each team. We went into the school hall and they told us our challenge. We had to make a tower out of mainly paper, lolly sticks and other materials to support a big stone. We had about an hour to do it with 10 minutes planning time.

It was quite difficult but we talked about it, planned our strategy and tested our theories until we came up with the idea. We decided to stuff tubes of paper with more paper and support them with the lolly sticks and we built it up that way. Most of it was about balance. One group, by the end, couldn’t even make theirs stand up. The group that won did very well but only just won.We came joint 4th with Bishop Bell. Our tower was 46cm tall.

We all really enjoyed it and would love to do it again. At the end of the day it wasn’t about winning it was about having fun. Winning would have been a bonus though. I am happy to have been chosen for the challenge.

The Team also included:

Ski 2012 - auStRia

The start of our exciting ski trip adventure began after school on the 30th of March where we started our 20+ hour journey for what would be a memorable school trip. We had an excellent journey to Austria; there was lots of music, movies, singing and general fun. When we arrived we received our ski equipment, ski passes and were all allocated our rooms before lunch, leaving the afternoon to relax after the journey.

It’s an incredible feeling slaloming fast down the face of a snowy mountain. It’s one of the best experiences you can ask for! This trip caters for those with all kinds of skiing ability, from the total beginner to the most advanced. Being a part of a group who went from navigating the beginners slopes on the first day, to dodging trees (off piste) and landing (or not landing) jumps by the last, is an amazing feat to look back on. The camaraderie is brilliant, and you develop friendships with your expert instructors each day as well as with each other. You learn a lot of skills throughout the week you’re skiing and these are put to the test in the competitive slalom races on the penultimate day. A medal ceremony and prize giving complete this amazing week of skiing.

The behaviour of all of the students was very good throughout the week, both in the Hotel and on the slopes. We made full use of all the facilities in the hotel, from boys vs. girls man hunt on the vast premises to table football in the games room. After dinner each night we had ‘the Muppet of the day’ awards of comedy bunny rabbit hats and t-shirts which had to be worn the following day. Evening activities were varied; from exploring the beautiful scenery on the first day, sledging, quizzes, bowling, swimming and then a disco with another school. We arrived there in style on our ‘disco bus’ with glow sticks, music and loud chanting getting us in the mood for a party. To end the trip we we had our own awards ceremony where everyone was presented with personalised awards and certificates. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff who helped to make this trip unforgettable for us all! It undoubtedly takes a lot of time and effort to organise such a trip, and for it to be so successful. We would not hesitate in recommending this trip to anybody. It’s an awesome experience!

The (now) annual community fair took place on Thursday 10th May 2012. During the day year 7 students had the chance to talk to representatives from a number of organisations who gave up their time to take part. The response from the students was very positive with 53% of students

reporting that they found the event 'very useful', 33% finding it ‘quite useful’ and 14% of students finding the event ‘useful’. No students rated the event as ‘not at all useful’. Moreover, 100% of students stated that they felt that they had left the event having learnt something new about some of the organisations that operate in Eastbourne. After school the students took over the canteen and took to the stage. As talented students entertained visitors to the school, enterprising students used the event to raise money for their nominated charities. A number

of stalls were set up with Madam Smith’s chocolate fountain proving very popular and Mrs Smither’s cake stall doing roaring business. Thanks also to 10NM, 7CM, 7SSH, 8DF, 7SR and 7RC who all had stalls. Entertainment was provided by the M25 Band, Keira Harrison, Chantelle Saracouli , Naomi Hawkins, Jess Mckeown and Maddy Chambers, Mollie Ireland and Amie Brown and talented musicians Max Salisbury, Tom Sangster and Sam Avery. Finally the Pentacle Drummers retuned and were accompanied by Willow Lyons.

Local Liberal Democrat MP Steven Lloyd paid the visit during the afternoon and declared that he was once more ‘incredibly impressed’ with Willingdon students. Many thanks to all those involved.

Boxing Achievements of Smokin’ Joe Frazier

His total number of fights was 37, and he won 32 of them. He won 27 by a knock out. He lost 4 and drew 1. He defeated Muhammad Ali which was his greatest achievement. His real name was Joseph William Frazier, he was 5ft 11 and his nationality was American. He was born on January 12th 1944 in Beufort, South Caroline, United States. He was the youngest of 12 children; Frazier was born in 1944 into a working–class family on a farm. After dropping out of school and working a farm labourer at the age of fourteen, Frazier left South Caroline after his boss threatened to give him a beating. Moving to Philadelphia, Joe Frazier worked at a meat packing plant and began training as a boxer

while he raised his own family. Frazier dreamed of becoming a prize fighter from an early age, watching matches on his family’s black-and-white television. After fighting as an amateur for several years, Frazier won a gold medal for the United States at the 1964 Olympic Games. Smokin’ Joe Frazier really

made his name in the 1970s during his great match with the boxing legend M u h a m m a d Ali. Frazier became the first man to beat Ali, winning the h e a v y w e i g h t title in 1971 in the dramatic, 1 5 - r o u n d

unanimous decision at the New York’s Maddison Square Garden. It was called “fight of the century”, and estimated that 300 million people worldwide viewed the match, which left both men in hospital. Frazier died on the 7th November 2011 (aged 67), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. The reason he

The footballing achievements of Gary Speed

Gary Andrew Speed was born on the 8th September 1969 and died on the 27th November 2011. Gray Speed played for many different teams including Leeds United, Everton, N e w c a s t l e United, Bolton Wanderers and Sheffield united. He was the first person who played in the premier league to reach 500

appearances and he was the most capped player who ever played in the premier league so far. He also played for his national team, Wales, and then went on to manage them after he’d retired

from playing. He signed his first professional contract on the 13th June 1988 for Leeds united. He made his first team debut in a goalless draw at the age of 19. In 1992 he played a vital role in the midfield which conspired of

himself, Gordon Strachan, Gary McAllister and David Batty which saw Leeds united win the

died was that he had a brief fight with liver cancer at the age of 67. Upon hearing of Frazier’s death, Muhammad Ali said, “The world has lost a great champion. I will always remember Joe with respect and admiration.” Frazier’s private funeral took place on the 14th November at

the Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church in Philadelphia, and with friends and family it was also attended by Muhammad Ali, Don King, Larry Holmes, Magic Johnson, Dennis Rodman and also others that he had fought before in his boxing career.

Football league First Division. He played a staggering 312 games and scored an incredible 57 goals. He then moved to Everton in 1996 he was signed by Joe Royle for a fee of 3.5 million pounds. He finished his first season joint top goal scorer with 11 goals and was nominated Everton’s player of the year. He played his last match for Everton in 1988 having played just 58 games and scoring 15 goals in that time.He was then signed for Newcastle for 5.5 million by Kenny Dalglish in 1988 and made his debut as a starter in a 1-0 loss to West Ham. He scored his first goal in his fifth game which was a sixth round match against Barnsley which they won 3-1. He won his only home win of the season when the won their penultimate game that season against Chelsea. He played 213 games and scored 29 goals. He was then signed by Bolton for 750,000 pounds on a two year deal. During the season he became the first player to make 500 Premier League appearances against West ham in December of 2006. In May of 2007 he became Bolton’s first team coach as well as being a player. But in October he stepped down so

he could just be a player again. Speed scored a header in a match against Reading making him the only player to score in every season but that was beaten by Ryan Giggs a few years later. He played 121 games for Bolton and scored 14 goals.

His final team he played for was Sheffield United he joined in 2008. He played his debut on the day of his move against Wolverhampton. He made his official retirement on his 41st birthday having made 37 appearances and scored 6 goals. He agreed to stay at the club as a coach but was still on the squad sheet for the next season and appeared on the bench in a first round cup match. He went on to manage Wales for 1 year before he died in 2011.

Junior maths Challenge 26th april 2012

After school on this busy school day these twenty Year 7s and 8s did not go home to relax – oh no, they went to the Maths room and spent an hour tussling with some of the most challenging questions the UK Maths Challenge team could throw at them!

Their results reflect the high level of Maths that they have reached, and one of them needs a specific mention: James Blackmore scored so highly that he has received an invitation to take part in the International Junior Olympiad Challenge, as well as getting his well deserved Gold certificate.

Congratulations to all the students below who worked really hard in their own time, and I hope that all of them will want to come back next year and do even better – the Year 7s will do the Junior Challenge again, but the Year 8s will be entered for the Intermediate Challenge.

At the end of last term Luke Sprintall, 8RK, was the lucky winner of a £30 iTunes Voucher as a result of being registered for ParentPay, the on-line payment system for items from the school meals service. For those students disappointed about missing out on this, further opportunities are available as the ParentPay draw is being made again at the end of this Term 5, and at the end of Term 6. So if your child uses the school meals service, and currently brings in money instead of using ParentPay, now is the time to start using the on-line method!
