Please don't put your food waste inblack bags

Going Green R educe, R euse, R ecycle

Monmouthshire Council is encouraginghouseholders to use their food waste binin order to cut down on the amount ofblack bags we send to landfill and helpkeep our streets clean and tidy.

A recent survey, carried out by the council, showed Monmouthshire residents producearound 6,000 tonnes of food waste eachyear. That’s equivalent to 6,000 small cars ayear and amounts to an average of 3 kg perhouse per week. 27% of this food waste iseven unopened! Despite Monmouthshirebeing the first Council in Wales to introducefood waste collections it is disappointingthat 70% of our food waste still goes intothe black bags.

We are urging householders to use theirfood waste bin to reduce the amount offood waste going to landfill and ensure wecontinue to lead the way on recycling.

Separating food waste from your regularblack bin waste is easy. All food types areaccepted, including meat and fish bothcooked and uncooked, fruit and vegetablepeelings, dairy products, bread, cakes andpastries, rice, beans and pasta. Even the bitsthat you wouldn’t normally eat, such aseggshell and bones, can go into your foodwaste bin. Tea bags and coffee grounds can

also be recycled, along with the leftovers fromyour plate at the end of a meal.Food waste takes up landfill space, and producesharmful gases such as methane as it rots whichcontributes to global warming and increases thethreat of climate change. Left in the generalwaste food attracts animals - without the foodanimals would not be interested in your waste.

Rachel Jowitt, Waste Strategy Manager atMonmouthshire Council commented: “If it’streated properly food waste can be a valuableresource. Monmouthshire’s food (and green)waste is taken to a facility within the countywhich turns the waste into compost which meetsall the set standards and is then sold or given

back to the agricultural community for use ontheir land. It is a win win situation – waste backto food. What could be better?

Everyone creates a small amount of food waste,so we are asking you please to simply use yourcaddy to make sure this waste can be turned intosomething useful instead of damaging theenvironment.”

Kitchen Caddies and replacement blue, foodwaste boxes, can be obtained by contacting yourlocal Council One Stop Shop. Liners for thekitchen caddies are also available from the onestop shop. Abergavenny One Stop Shop is at theTown Hall, Cross Street 01873 735800.

Since 1 April 2012, your home must have anEnergy Performance Certificate (EPC) at GradeD or above to qualify for the maximum 21pper kilowatt Feed-In Tariff. Otherwise the ratedrops to just 9p. The EPC assessment looks atthings such as insulation and how you heatyour home. It also includes recommendationson how you can make your home more energyefficient and improve your grading.

If your home falls below Grade D but you want

to receive the full Feed-In Tariff, you will needto carry out the recommended measuresbefore your solar panels are installed. Andeven if your home is Grade D or above, it’s stillwell worth following up the advice, becausebasic measures such as topping up your loftinsulation to 270mm, or installingtemperature regulating valves (TRVs) on yourcentral heating radiators cost relatively littleand can have a significant impact on yourenergy bills.

Making renewable energymore affordable for everyoneThink solar PV is beyond your budget? Thanks to an innovative group-buyingscheme run by a Brecon Beacons-basedsocial enterprise, solar PV and otherrenewable energy technolgies are now moreaffordable for everyone.

Called Reach For The Renewables, the project isthe brainchild of local social entrepreneurMichael Butterfield and is run in partnershipwith the Llangattock Green Valleys CommunityInterest Company.

The scheme is based on simple economies ofscale: ‘We organise surveys and installations in“bundles”,’ explains Michael, ‘so we makeabsolutely the best use of our installers’ time, which reduces their costs.

‘Plus we’re a no-frills outfit. We provide first-class kit and our installers, Exenergy, of EbbwVale, provide free Energy PerformanceCertificates (see panel) and are fully accreditedunder the Government’s MicrogenerationCertification Scheme (MCS). But we don’t haveflash offices, big marketing budgets or teams ofpeople behind the scenes. It’s all very lean – andthat means rock-bottom prices for ourcustomers.’

And the benefits don’t end there, says Michael:‘The 21p Feed In Tariff makes solar PV anexcellent investment, offering returns of up to

13.2% on our current prices. That’s far betterthan any bank or building society. Plus bygenerating your own free electricity you canprotect yourself from rising energy costs.

‘What’s more, because LGV is a communityinterest company, any profits go towardsdeveloping more local renewable energyprojects. So by choosing Reach For TheRenewables you’re not just helping yourself, you’re helping to create a more sustainablefuture for the whole area.’

Already households across the Brecon Beaconshave had solar PV installed through the scheme.Solar thermal hot water systems and voltageoptimisation are also available, and air andground source heat pumps will be added to theoffering soon, along with woodburning stovesand biomass boilers.

But as Michael says, renewable technologies arejust part of the jigsaw. ‘There’s no pointinstalling renewables to help you save energy ifyour home is poorly insulated, or you have anold, inefficient boiler. That’s why we also offerexcellent prices on the latest A-rated boilers andon loft, cavity wall and external wall insulation, starting from just £49 for loft or cavity wallinsulation for a standard mid-terrace or semi-detached property.

ENERGY PERFORMANCE CERTIFICATES

■ Reach For The Renewables’ solar PV prices start from £4,084 (including volume discount) for a 1.5kWp (6-panel)scheme. A 12-panel (3.0kWp) scheme like the one shown here costs as little as £6,398.

Spotlight on Abergavenny MarketJohn Witheridge is one of the neweststallholders at Abergavenny Marketwith his collection of film and musicmemorabilia.

Stage Door came to the market a year agoand John quickly built up a reputation fora range of quality collectables includingautograph pictures, posters, records andDVDs.

John said: “I think Abergavenny marketwas a good choice as it offers a goodlocation for small businesses.

“I’ve always collected and it startedwith a fascination for bank notes andcoins as a teenager. In later years I beganthinking collection was hoarding byanother name so began selling thecollections I had built up over manydecades.

“I had been a retail manager for a largeDIY firm and I gained my business acumenfrom this and used this knowledge to setup this stall. It’s definitely a challenge, butat the same time most rewarding as I feelits personality that counts.

“Items connected with MarilynMonroe and Elvis Presley are alwayspopular as are today’s artists of OneDirection, JLS and Jessie J. But the biggestseller must be anything to do with thetelevision series Only Fools and Horses.

“However it’s the songs andmemorabilia from film and theatre thatgets the most interest from market

visitors. People come here one week andsee these items on sale and it remindsthem that they have something similarstored in their attic. The next week theyare back selling me, what had not seen thelight of day in many cases for manydecades.”

Along side the movie memorabilia areposters for the variety acts in theatres andmusic halls around the country which dateback to the 1840s, many of which depictthe stars of the 20th Century among thebill’s support act and these include DesO’Connor, Ken Dodd and Morecombe andWise.

“I don’t collect for myself anymore,”said John. “It’s always sad to let go ofsomething I have treasured for so long, but I know in this trade that it will betreasured by its new owner. I even had abig collection of Toby jugs, which I knowhave gone to good homes.

“In the past year Sir Derek Jacobi (theactor and film director) and Chris Jagger(brother of Rolling Stone Mick) have bothshown an interest in my stall.

John concludes: “Posters fromwhatever era they are produced in reveal alot about that particular period of history. It’s an untapped resource that is beingpicked up by the public who are interestedin the early days of film, concerts musichalls or entertainment in general. Evenreproduction posters from the Wild Westare extremely popular.”

Many will be looking to organise their financesbefore the start of the financial year nextmonth after hitting the sales at the beginning ofthe year.

Danny Cox, at financial advisor HargreavesLansdown, says: “Now is the best time to dust offold investments and pensions and review how theyare doing. Is it time to cash in your PremiumBonds? Are you making the most ofall your cash savings? Andhave you made themost of all yourtax efficientallowances?"

KevinMountford, headof banking atcomparison site

moneysupermarket.com, says: “We are all feelingthe pinch, especially after the increase in VAT inJanuary , and it is too easy to sit on mediocrefinancial products which give a poor rate of returnor cost far more than necessary.

“Significant savings can often be made byswitching to better deals found by a few minutes ofresearch."

Mortgages are an obvious area to make savings- although many people can’t be

bothered to change when prospectsfor interest rates remain souncertain.

Ray Boulger, at broker JohnCharcol, says: “If you are paying morethan 3% on your loan, and have more

than 15% equity in your home, youare probably paying too much

and could find something better. “Many people on standard

variable rate (SVR) loans at theend of a fixed period can’t be

bothered to move andare waiting to see

what happensnext."

Boulger thinks it

Spring clean your finances in 2012

is still too early to fix, with eurozone problemsset to cause more turmoil in 2011. Threeproviders of tracker mortgages - Woolwich,Nationwide and Scottish Widows - offer a drop-lock option to switch easily into a fix when thegoing gets tough.

For those who seriously overspent during2011, there’s often something to be said forconsolidating various loans into one new loan.

And what about interest earned on yourspare cash? For most holders of bank accounts, the rate of interest paid on your money hasdrained away so drastically that you hardlynotice the item on your bank statement.

Next up are credit cards - which take muchpunishment during December when presentsend up costing more than planned.

The obvious strategy for 2012 is to alwayspay more than the minimum monthly payment,to slash interest charged on the outstandingbalance.

On both cars and houses insurancepremiums have gone through the roof for manyconsumers this year - which is a strongargument for shopping around.

Follow these simple tips to shave thosepremiums: Don’t over-estimate the level of

cover needed on your home, and pay annuallyfor home insurance rather than monthly. If youare a younger motorist, adding an older driver toa car insurance policy can also help cut costs.

Travel insurance is becoming expensive too -particularly since the fiasco of Iceland’s volcaniceruptions, which have cost millions in claims.Several banks include travel insurance in theirstandard package. These include the NationwideFlexAccount, which offers free European multi-trip cover worth up to £80 for a couple.

Energy bills are a growing worry - with manyhousehold budgets likely to have beenhammered already.

Common sense measures can trim energycosts - turning down the thermostat by 1°C cancut your annual bill by 10%.

Also loft and cavity wall insulation can saveup to 35% of heat loss, so installation costs aresoon cancelled out by savings. Turningappliances off at the wall instead of leavingthem on standby mode also reduces costs.

Finally, it may be the right time to rethinkyour home TV and IT systems: Bundling your TV,landline and broadband together into onepackage can result in big savings.

Ceritech AudioElectrical retailers were once a common siteon the high street, but with advances indigital technology these began to slowlydisappear from view.

But now one independent company inMonmouth is bucking the trend and isaccompanying the best that vinyl has to offeralong with the latest in music streaming andsurround sound systems for watching DVDs.

Ceritech Audio, at 5 Monnow Bridge, is run byhusband and wife team Sam and Simon Jacksonwho established the business in 2000 from theirhome in the Forest of Dean.

But it wasn’t long before their hi-fi businessoutgrew this set up, so the couple relocated tothe Wyastone Leys Business Park, home toNimbus Records, where Simon and Sam createdpurpose built audio and cinematic listeningrooms to showcase the equipment they had tooffer.

Over the following years the company begancreating a loyal customer base as the businessexpanded and embraced all the moderndevelopments of downloading music andstreamlining tracks from smart phones andcomputers.

Sam said: “We aim to cater for everybody’sbudget from the top of the range to theaffordable along with a wide range of cables, headphones and other accessories.

“We have equipment made by Britishmanufacturers including Raga and Naim alongwith other makes including Pioneer, Moon,Onkyo, Denson and Teac.

“The sale of turntables has increased as vinylhas gained in popularity over the past ten years. It’s amazing to see the look on youngsters faces,

who are no strangers to downloading andplaying music, but have never experiencedhearing a vinyl record being played.”

Sam pointed out that the way we listen tomusic has moved on in many ways, but to somethe old ways are better. She said that Ceritechcaters for all hi-fi enthusiasts. The company hasevolved at a steady pace and now employs twoadditional members of staff.

Simon added: “We believe in old fashionedvalues by offering a personal consultation serviceto our visitors, something you definitely don’tget on line and is sadly lacking by the majorelectrical retailers.

“We know our range of products intimatelyand have the experience to know whatequipment works best with which speakers andother accessories.”

Among the ranges Ceritech Audio offer is atelevision system that takes viewing to a newlevel with a projection system that can bealmost completely hidden and integrated intoany living room. Titchmarsh’s tipson plants forpoor conditionsWe caught up with TV gardening guru Alan Titchmarsh recently, who has been busycovering the horticultural show circuit offering advice to the public on all-weatherplants which will grow in the worst conditions.

At BBC Gardeners’ World Live in Birmingham, hestarted on the subject of clay. Those with clay soiloften despair that they’re unable to dig it in really wetweather when it becomes so sticky and gluey itresembles a quagmire, while at the first sign of hotweather it goes as hard as rock and even the strongestgardener won’t be able to get a fork into it.

Of course, you can improve heavy clay soil bydigging in as much well-rotted organic matter as youcan and adding plenty of gritty horticultural sand tohelp drainage. Clay soil doesn’t drain easily and tendsto become waterlogged in persistent wet weather.

Alan, however, says clay isn’t all bad and that as ageneral rule don’t try to fight the conditions, but makethe most of plants that are happy growing in yourtype of soil.

Clay particles hold in nutrients, so the more clayand humus there is in the soil, the more nutrients itcan hold. This means that clay is actually among themost fertile of soils.

He says: “Willows love damp earth and clay. Salixdaphnoides (Violet Willow) can be grown likedogwood. Chop it down in February and it will grownew stems, providing winter colour and foliage inspring. It’s fast growing and will reach 8ft in eachseason."

Other great shrubs Alan recommends for clayinclude Viburnum ‘Pragense', a rounded evergreentype with narrow, textured leaves and clusters of pinkbuds which open to white flowers in late spring.Euphorbias, spiraeas, rodgersias and, of course, roses, will all thrive in clay soil.

“There’s the wonderful Rosa rugosa - the flowerslook like crepe paper, don’t get mildew or blackspot, make waist-high informal hedges and have hipsfollowing the flowers," Alan adds.

Other plants which do well in clay soils includeChoisya ternata (Mexican orange blossom), Hydrangeapaniculata, Kerria japonica, Mahonia x media ‘Charity’and Weigela ‘Kosteriana Variegata'.

While clay may be one problem, shade is another,

but there are plants which will survive the mostinhospitable situations. Hostas love shade and youcan buy copper collars to place around them toprevent slugs and snails chomping their waythrough the young shoots.

Another exotic-looking plant which loves shadeand needs relatively little maintenance, says Alan, isthe fatsia, with its bold, glossy leaves. If the frostcatches it, just chop off the damaged leaves andstrong new growth should soon appear.

If you have dry shade, look no further thanAcanthus mollis, commonly known as bear’sbreech, a perennial which will cope well withdrought and poor soils.

“It’s an architectural beauty with towering, stiffspikes of purple-hooded, white or pink flowersabove good, glossy green leaves," Alan adds.

Some bamboos will also thrive in shade, butmake sure if you have limited space you buy theclump-forming varieties rather than those whichspread rampantly and are then extremely difficultto dig up.

Phyllostachys nigra, black bamboo, whichreaches a height of 5m (16ft), is a brilliant clump-forming type - with arching canes which turn blackafter a couple of years - and looks wonderful in amodern, minimalist setting. It can also be grown inlarge containers if they are not allowed to dry out,but needs some direct sunlight to ripen the canesfully.

Blue bamboo, Himalayacalamus hookerianus‘Himalaya Blue', which grows to 6m, is perfect forsmaller gardens, adding tall interest to shady areas, with its blue-green stems.

Look carefully and you will find a wider rangeof all-weather plants than you first thought.

Dear Duo...Dear Duo...if you would like dear duo to help with yourproblems, please write to Dear Duo, The Gazetteand Diary, 13 Nevill Street, Abergavenny, NP7 5AA.

Dear DuoA friend of mine has always been very flirtywith me, and eventually last year I asked himout, thinking he was interested and I wouldlike to give things a try. However, he was veryblunt in his refusal and left me feeling ratherembarassed. However, he became more flirtythan ever after that, and was very attentiveand complimentary towards me, more tactilethan usual and our friends startedcommenting on it. This has carried on formonths, until recently he started going outwith someone else, but has continued to bevery flirty even when his girlfriend is present. Idon't know if he is just being inappropriatetowards me, doesn't realise how he is comingacross or whether he is interested but justkidding himself. Just wondered what otherpeople thought? Lacey

Hi Lacey From the information you have given here, itsounds like this guy is using you for his owngratification. If he has a girlfriend then hisbehaviour is disrespectful to her as well. Whilemost people i know who are in a relationship admitto indulging in a little bit of harmless flirting everynow and then, they all have respect for their

partner not to do it in front of them. If he hasturned you down already and is now with someoneelse then i think you should cut your losses andmove on. At least you tried. If you feel it would help, you could always have aquiet word with him and ask him if he realises thathe is behaving this way, or ask a friend to speak tohim if that would be better. It may be that he is justa naturally flirty person and just needs a gentlenudge in order to tone it down. But the main thing for you to do is not to let thisguy play you and to find someone else who willmake you happy.Good luck! J

Dear DuoI really don't know how to fix this so any helpwould be appreciated. My 33 yr old bf can be really childish, challenging, is a jealous (and oftencontrolling) character and can really hold agrudge. But when you get past all that he'sreally a great person, he's just a bit insecure. He got me talking with a friend of his throughfacebook and unfortunately it was at a timewhen he and I were arguing a bit. The friendgot in touch to ask how things were ect andI'd had a couple of glasses of wine and vented

a bit (I really regretted it afterwards) hisfriend was really understanding about it, saidhe'd had similar problems with him but thatthe best way to deal with it was just to sitquietly until he'd stopped shouting and he'dbe calm, bark worse than bite ect. He saidnothing nasty about my bf, just offered adviceas he'd been on the end of his aggressive sidetoo.

A few days later, my bf demanded to see themessages and said he didn't trust either of usanymore and that I'd ruined his friendship, Itried to explain that all his friend had donewas defend him and offer advice but he wasn'thappy. He's now refusing to speak to his friendwho is really upset over the whole thing. Ihadn't told him that my bf had read themessages until today and I don't know howhe'll react. It's all so messed up. Today is mybf's birthday and he won't even respond toany messages. I've not seen or heard from himfor nearly 2 weeks over a different fall out, ifit's over between us then that's ok, I canaccept it, will probably save me an ulcer inlater life I'm sure, but I'd hate to think of himnever speaking to his life long friend againover something that he's taken the wrong way.The friend did nothing wrong, it was my faultfor using him as a shoulder to cry on.

I don't know how to fix this though??Dana

Hi DanaYou didn't ruin the friendship. Your boyfriend (orex) has ongoing temper issues and has probablylost friends and girlfriends before because of it.You say you'd be ok if it's over between you - don'tlet guilt about the lost friendship hold you back. You did nothing wrong either - and it sounds likeit's not the first time he's fallen out with his mate,so they'll probably sort this out too.
