Dundee City Aquatics
Newsletter
Welcome to the May version of Dundee City Aquatics Newsletter. A busy couple of months
with some leavers, and some new arrivals, including Garrie Roberts, our new Coach who
takes over from Drew.
There is a lot of focus on find-raising at this time as we look to increase the clubs coffers.
Please continue to support in any way you can.
The new website is now up and running and can be
found here:
http://www.dundeecityaquatics.co.uk/
Mike Withers and Steve Cavill are our “web-experts”
and any requests for additions and data to be added
can be passed to them.
The Learn To Swim (LTS) squads are looking for some poolside helpers to support development of our
younger swimmers. If you have coaching experience at this level or are just interested in helping
please contact one of the Coaching Team.
If you are interested in achieving Level 1, 2, 3 Teaching/Coaching certifications contact David Pool at
Your Club Needs You!!! Fund-Raising Convener We still are on the lookout for a Fund-Raising Convener. At this time there are committee members performing more than
one role within the club, arranging and managing fund raising events on top of the not inconsiderable amount of time on their
main function. If you have some spare time and can support please contact Dave Clarke.
“EASY-FUND-RAISING” = “EASY-MONEY-FOR-DCA” DCA is now recognised as a good cause on www.EasyFundRaining.org.uk. This means we have a fan-
tastic opportunity to raise funds with minimal effort. All it takes is a few moments of time and a computer.
For those of you familiar with Nectar it works exactly the same. Log in, click on a retailer, be taken to
their site, buy something, and DCA get a % of the spend.
A few of us have been trying it out and we have raised nearly £40 in a few days just by signing up to re-ceive e-mails, (which u then mark as spam), free sim cards, and a small percentage of anything we buy
online.
If everyone registers, (not just each family) and signs up to the three "Free Funds" on offer we could
make nearly £400 for the club with less than 10 minutes of your time.
On the new DCA website there is a guide to registering for the site, becoming a supporter, and how to
sign up for the three examples above - there are more if you look around.
Also it is worth noting that there are lots of offers, deals, discounts from hundreds of online and high
street retailers.
Please take ten minutes to look at the guide, register, have a look around the site, sign up for the free
offers, and raise some much needed funds.
There will be a monthly prize on the first day of each month beginning 1st July for the person with the
biggest contribution.

10 swimmers from Dundee City Aquatics took part in this years Scottish Masters Swimming
Championships in the Glasgow at the end of April.
The team of Ross Clark, John Archibald, Mark Diamond, Claire Murray, Claire Nixon, Jane Grant,
Clive Jollands, Del Cunnah, Stewart Maxwell and Ursula Ryder amassed a total of 18 gold medals;
25 silvers and 5 bronze to finish 8th team over all in the country, highest team in the Midlands Dis-
trict. Ross Clark equalled the long standing 32 year national record held by David Wilkie for the
100m breastroke. Claire Nixon and Claire Murray were awarded Age Group Winners for gaining
the most points and Claire Nixon added to Scottish Records to her achievements.
4 of the team are preparing to head to Italy in June for the FINA World Masters Swimming Cham-
pionships . Claire Murray, Claire Nixon, Ursula Ryder and Jane Grant are part of Team Caledonia,
39 swimmers from Scotland heading to Riccione to participate in both pool and open water events.
Eindhoven Swim Cup
Dundee City Aquatics swimmer Kirsty Simpson and Head Coach David Pool where selected to represent Scotland at the
recent Eindhoven Swim Cup, April 2012. A team of 30 swimmers, coaches and support staff from Scotland mixed it with
some of the Worlds Elite swimmers during the week of racing at the Pieter Van Den Hoogenband Zwemstadion. The meet
acted as the Netherlands last chance for Olympic Qualification so the standard was very high resulting in some fast swim-
ming from the Dutch Sprint Girls posting World Textile Records in the 50m and 100m Free. Kirsty went well over the week
making final's in the 50 Back, 100 Back, 200 Back and 200 I.M where she set a PB time. It was tough racing for Kirsty over
the week after a gruelling Spring competition programme that included Olympic Trials in London, Scottish Nationals Age
Group's in Sunderland
Drew’s final training session with his squad, (and a couple of guests), took place at St John’s. Thanks to eve-
ryone, swimmers, parents, friends, who waved him goodbye. DCA gave him a sports watch and the swim-
mers/parents gave him a cheque from the collection. He leaves with our Best Wishes.
DCA is a competitive swimming club and we compete in two Midlands Leagues, as well as numerous meets
and galas across all age groups. For us to do well we don’t just need strong teams, we need “the” Team.
Late call offs and no-shows affect not just our standing, but affect those swimmers who do attend, as they will
miss out on two relay swims.
Please support the coaches in enabling your child to attend the gala/meet they are selected for, and if not, give
as much notice as possible to allow a reserve to be found.
Thanks, from the Coaching Team.
After a long 5 successful days down in Sunderland for Scottish National Age Groups we are all back home and

Attendance
One of the hallmarks of a quality swimming team program is a planned program of physical
development. (Other hallmarks include an emphasis on teaching, intelligent approaches to
competition, and racing with a purpose, as well as individual attention to those who are
"earning it" through their attention to the instructions of the coach.)
The planned program of physical development includes programmed physical stress and re-
covery times. Progress can only be made by the athlete by imposing a previously inexperi-
enced stress on the body system. The body will then adapt to this stress, if provided the ap-
propriate degree and timing of recovery. (Total rest is NOT appropriate recovery... it does not
provide the lower level stimulation necessary for compensatory chemical reactions to devel-
op.)
The stresses applied can be in the form of speed, distance swum, or "density" of workout.
(yards per time period.) Stress can also be specifically applied in accordance with energy sys-
tems. A quality swimming program will mix the stresses in appropriate quantities and types
for the group of athletes, and thus the individuals, being trained. The "mix" will be different
for different groups and individuals, based on their previous training.
Thus, attendance at workout is a CRITICAL feature in making physical progress in the program.
When an athlete misses a workout, they upset the delicate balance of "how much of what"
stresses they apply to their body. In worst cases, athletes attend the recovery workouts, and
miss the stressful workouts and thus never apply increasing stress to their systems. In the
next worst scenario, athletes miss a series of recovery workouts, and attend only the stressful
workouts and thus never get the appropriate recovery stimulation, and go from "sore" to
"more sore." Finally, missing a "cycle" of stressful and recovery workouts means that the ath-
lete takes "one step forward and one step back" and worse, comes back to a stress/recovery
cycle that is now two steps up from their last practice .... a very stressful adaptation.
This ignores, of course, the fact that the athlete has let his teammates down by not attending,
and has lost the opportunity to learn what is being taught that day.
"TO ACHIEVE GREAT THINGS, FIRST SHOW UP EVERY DAY."
