ATTACH MY CHAIR OR FROM TWO WHEELS TO THREE.

For quite a while I have had a yearning to own a sidecar. I was involved with them in my youth and earlier working life. In fact, before leaving England for this country of great motorcycling weather (well, most of the time) I was workshop foreman mechanic at “Bryants of Biggleswade”, (a town about 50 miles north of London). Bryants were well known as “the sidecar people”, indeed we would fit two or three chairs a week, and one advantage of working there was that a sidecar outfit could always be borrowed for a week’s holiday with wife May and son Allan. (We couldn’t afford a car in those days)

Fast forward some 50 years and, although motorcycles are becoming very popular again, a nice-looking sidecar outfit is a rare sight. We do have several in the club and I have often admired them. So I began researching on the internet and asking around. I did find some sidecars that interested me but the price was a bit beyond my budget. Then I discovered that “EuroBrit” in Victoria had a single-seat model called the Indira “Rocket” with a price tag of $3007.75, including all the necessary fittings, plus freight ($220). Quite reasonable compared to some others that I had looked at.

I ordered my “Rocket” and then asked Miguel (owner of “Biketeck” in Bellambi Lane) if I could have the crate delivered to their premises as it was quite large and the weighed around 135 kilograms. Miguel kindly agreed and even helped me to un crate and assemble the chair, but he didn’t want anything to do with attaching it to a bike as he had no experience in that field.

Looking at the fitting attachments that came with the chair I was a little surprised at how things have changed since 1962. I asked our club’s sidecar expert, Denis Tobler (who has at least 6 outfits in his shed) for some help and he kindly came down from the mountain to give me enough advice to start assembly. But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Once I had the sidecar I had to figure out what bike I going to attach it to. I had admired a lovely BMW K100 at Biketeck for a long time, and I thought it would make a nice combination. However when I mentioned this to Miguel he pointed out that as an outfit it would be heavy to manoeuvre (over 400 kg). Also the K100 model has the engine as a stressed member of the frame (therefore there are no front down-tubes) therefore would require some extensive modification of the sidecar’s chassis

Back to the old drawing board, as they say. I was thinking that I might have to attach the sidecar to my beloved Triumph Bonneville (not an attractive option) when I received a phone-call from Miguel a day or two later. He asked me to pop down to the shop, which I duly did...to find my sidecar set up alongside a very nice BMW R65 that he had just traded in. The gloss black Rocket sidecar and the shiny black Bimmer looked good together. I was hooked at first glance!

So I purchased the R65, transferred the registration to my name and, while I was at the RMS (new name for the RTA) I enquired about the regulations regarding attaching a sidecar. No-one there could help me but I was given the phone number of a nice engineer chap. I rang him up and he told me what was required, including the fitment of a handbrake (only in NSW apparently).

The Rocket is designed to go straight onto a Royal Enfield, and one main support (the front lower connection) was a problem until club member Kevin Brown came to my rescue and sleeved the fitting for me. Everything else went together reasonably easily and I was ready to purchase a handbrake lever. I sent away to Bathurst Engineering for one, sight unseen, but when it arrived it was so “agricultural” that I couldn’t use it. Luckily I was able to buy a suitable one from a local car wreckers at reasonable cost.

During all this asking around I happened to meet a married couple with a very nice outfit. The husband said that I should probably take my combination to an engineer to be fitted correctly (at a cost of $1000 +) then I would have no worries. The funny thing is, he then told me that he had to fit a handbrake himself, to be legal. Not a good advert for their engineer, I thought

Once I had the sidecar mounted securely and adjusted according to my recollections from years ago and some more internet research, I then rode the outfit to Biketeck so that Miguel could wire up the electrics (lights and blinkers). On the short trip to Bellambi I was pleased with the handling although it became obvious that wider, more upright handlebars would make it easier to steer. This should not require replacement of any cables, but did involve a lot of jiggling around, causing me to replace the aging front brake hose for a new braided one, also new throttle cables just for safety sake, the BMW is different to other makes. At Jax Tyres the blue slip engineer Paul asked some questions, checked all the fittings and lights and told me that I would need to get it weighed. With the weigh-bridge docket in hand I returned to find out what else I had to do, only to be told, “No, that’s it! Your bike and sidecar are registered.”

There are two things to be fitted, the first is a steering damper, which Kevin has obtained, the other, (not a priority) is a set of leading-link forks. An old friend has offered to make them for me, and I now have a set of rear shocks as a start, from an almost new Triumph T100 (courtesy of another friend who is upgrading his suspension). We’ll keep fingers crossed, and get some miles (or rather kilometres) on the clock and build up the arm muscles. If anyone would like ride in the chair you’ll have to lift out the two bags of sand first, I had enough trouble lifting them in!

Fitting the sidecar brought back memories of fitting a Steib chair to a newish Vincent Black Shadow one of the last bikes I worked on at Bryants, way back in 1961. I wonder how much that would be worth today. Ah, what if? John Baker.

ROSS SMITH’S RESTORATION

The Club members who did not attend the March meeting missed out on a truly great presentation by Ross Smith displaying his 1950 Triumph Thunderbird. The restoration performed by Ross and assisted by Allan was first class.

Ross purchased the basket case (see photo) on the 19th. March 2010.The frame is form a 1949 unit and the engine is of 1950 manufacture.

Challengers came thick and fast during the restoration period for Ross, among which was the acquisition of the front guard, which of course had to include the correct rib profile .The nacelle and front fork cover and the head lamp rim presented problems, and for those of us are Triumph experts would know are unique to this era. The wiring harness and rear stand also proved some concern.

The carburettor had its contribution to the restoration as did some oil leaks. Who was it said that the only British bike that did not leak oil was the unit which did not have any oil added in the first place.

The paint work was carried out by Mal Cutler at Castle Hill, absolute perfect job, faultless !! Peter Boros restored the speedometer to original condition.

As a reward to Ross and Allan ,the Triumph has received some trophy’s , amount which include. Equal 2nd. Orange Country Rally 1st . CEMCC Annual Rally 2012, and Orange Country Rally 2013.

Thank you Ross for a very entertaining presentation.

Tortoise Run March – Illawarra. A very dull morning weather aspect and forecast of a shower on the South Coast, as well as an unusual 10am start from Key Batteries probably took a toll on the attendees who turned up for the early start but nevertheless twenty-one machines lined up on Mt Keira Rd, (Key Batteries forecourt was thick with customers), and all got away virtually on time. The proposed run to the Brake Smart premises at Montague St Fairy Meadow was undertaken through the back streets of West Wollongong – a route very seldom traveled by the Classic Club riders – then linking up with the Coast road at North Wollongong before getting into the Northern end of Montague St to finish at the venue where a few members had arrived by other methods of transport. What a very interesting tour of a brake reconditioning industry was then undertaken by the group which had now swelled to twenty six, and the tour guide, (Peter Temple), was obviously very competent in the braking reconditioning industry, and very skilful and businesslike in his delivery of the discourse and the aftermath of a question and answer forum. The firm also very generously put on a nice morning tea for the attendees, and the whole outing was very much appreciated by those who attended as such a learning curve is not very often extended to members. Thanks to the Perre Brothers, (owners of the business), who normally do not open on Saturdays, but in this case generously gave their time and effort to ensure the expose was the success it turned out to be. Thanks also to Peter Temple who gave up his time to cover all the bases with his dialogue on all things pertaining to the brake trade and certainly passed on his many years of experience to the assembled club members. Illawarra Social Night – March. The Corrimal Leagues Club was the venue re-chosen for the first social outing of 2013, after a period when the club was placed into receivership and not functioning. After a period of closure the club was able to re-open but it appeared obvious that a lot of former attendees may have found other social venues in the non-operating interim. Nevertheless twenty six members and associates of the C.E.M.C.C. turned out on Friday 22nd March and the food service appeared to be quite adequate though rather on the slow side but everyone seemed to enjoy the outing and a couple of girls gave the “pokies” a bit of stick as well as scoring a couple of prizes in the big raffle. All in all the attendees enjoyed the night though it may be held at a change of venue for the second outing of 2013, however, it looks like people are embracing the night once again, and the numbers could return to the 30 mark next time. Illawarra Mid-Week Run for April saw A.M.C. Corner awash at 8am and things did indeed look black for the outing leaving Key Batteries at 10am and proposing to head up to the Southern Tablelands to culminate at Mittagong for Lunch. However by 10am a very low and threatening cloud ceiling virtually ensured that the turn-out for the run would be minimal and such was the case as only Convenor Ron and Emma were the only ones to appear at Key Batteries, (courtesy of the four-wheeled drive), though also lurking on Mt Keira Rd was Barry Ryan, who incidentally, is just about ready to have the T100 break out of the Keiraville Shed and “burn”(?) down the Queens Highway. Late mail indicated that a couple of riders from the Oakdale area turned out for the run because no wet weather afflicted their area, so the day was not a complete dead loss for the clubs riders. Illawarra Club Run – March. The 17th March was designated as a ride to the Barry Sheen Race Meeting at Eastern Creek, and an early leave from Key Batteries saw three Illawarra’s racing enthusiasts leave for the trip up via Appin where they picked up another three riders. A few other enthusiasts came under their own steam and enjoyed a good day of racing, which featured Johanne and David Dickie canvassing their combo around the circuit. An enjoyable day for all who attended. Programme Illawarra April 2013. Once again long time member Denis Tobler provided a machine for the club meeting night, and this was a very nicely restored 1937 Rudge 500cc OHV finished in the traditional all black livery. This machine has already been seen out and about on club events and is able to motor along smoothly and reliably. As usual Denis was able to give a detailed discourse on the machine, and the complicated arrangement which saw it come into his possession as a part exchange component in the disposal of his very desirable 1925 A.J.S. 799cc V Twin which was then transported to Victoria. Quite a few questions were comfortably answered by Denis, and it looks like he really enjoys the machine which can hold its own at normal road speeds. A flaw did surface in the gear changing linkage of the Burman gearbox, but he was able to fix this up to have everything all “hunky dory” with the bike, and it is part of the more modern designs of the thirties era. Many thanks to Denis and Robert for the time and effort put in to bring the Rudge in for the perusal of the 65 members at the meeting, and it was really appreciated by all who attended.

Now this is food for thought! A lot of these changes have only happened in the last thirty to forty years!

BEING GREEN...... Checking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the much older woman, that she should bring her own grocery bags because plastic bags weren't good for the environment.

The woman apologized and explained, "We didn't have this 'green thing' back in my earlier days."

The young clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations." WHAT THE ?????? !!!!!!!

She was right -- our generation didn't have the 'green thing' in its day.

Back then, we returned milk bottles, soft drink bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled.

But we didn't have the "green thing" back in our day. Grocery stores bagged our groceries in brown paper bags that we reused for numerous things, most memorable besides household garbage bags, was the use of brown paper bags as book covers for our schoolbooks. This was to ensure that public property, (the books provided for our use by the school) was not defaced by our scribbling. Then we were able to personalize our books on the brown paper bags.

But too bad we didn't do the "green thing" back then.

We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks.

But she was right. We didn't have the "green thing" in our day.

Back then, we washed the baby's nappies because we didn't have the throwaway kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy-gobbling machine burning up 240 volts -- wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that young lady is right; we didn't have the "green thing" back in our day. Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Western Australia. In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by walking so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she's right; we didn't have the "green thing" back then.

We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull.

But we didn't have the "green thing" back then.

Back then, people took the tram or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their mums into a 24-hour taxi service in the family's $45,000 SUV or van, which cost what a whole house did before the "green thing." We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances.

And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 23,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest hamburger shop.

But isn't it sad that the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the "green thing" back then? Please forward this on to another selfish old person who needs a lesson in conservation from a smart ass young person... We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to piss us off... especially from a tattooed, multiple pierced smart ass that can't make change without the cash register telling them how much. The end !

Bloke at a horse race whispers to Paddy next to him, "Do you want the winner of the next race?" Paddy replies "No tanks, I've only got a small garden." Paddy and Mick found 3 hand grenades and decided to take them to the police station. Mick, "What if one explodes before we get there?" Paddy, “We'll lie and say we only found two!” A coach load of Paddies on a mystery tour decided to run a sweepstake to guess where they were going. The driver won £52! Paddy's racing snail is not winning races anymore. So he decided to take its shell off to reduce its weight and make him more aerodynamic. It didn’t’ work; if anything it made him more sluggish. Paddy finds a sandwich with two wires sticking out of it. He phones the police and says, "Bejesas, I've just found a sandwich dat looks like a bomb. The operator asks, "Is it tickin? Paddy says, "No I tink it's turkey." Joe says to Paddy, "Close your curtains the next time you’re making love to your wife. The whole street was watching yesterday, and laughing at you.” Paddy says, "Well the joke’s on them, stupid, because I wasn't even at home yesterday." Mick walks into Paddy's barn and catches him dancing naked in front of a tractor. Mick says, "Oh, no, Paddy, what ya doing?" Paddy says, "Well me and Mary haven't been getting on in the bedroom lately and the therapist recommended I do something sexy to a tractor." Paddy says to Mick, “I'm ready for a holiday, only this year I'm going to do it a bit different. 3 years ago I went to Spain and Mary got pregnant. 2 years ago I went to Italy and Mary got pregnant. Last year I went to Majorca and Mary got pregnant. Mick asks, “So what are you going to do this year?” Paddy replies, “I'll take her with me!” Paddy says to Mick, "Christmas is on a Friday this year.” Mick says, "Let's hope it's not the 13th." Paddy's in the bathroom and Murphy shouts to him. "Did you find the shampoo?" Paddy says, "Yes, but it's for dry hair and I've just wet mine." _______________________________________________________________________________________ I was talking to a girl in the bar last night. She said, "If you lost a few kilos, had a shave and got your hair cut, you'd look alright." I said, "If I did that, I'd be talking to your girlfriends over there, not you."

I went to the pub last night and saw a fat sheila dancing on a table, I said to her, "WOW - Good legs". The girl giggled and blushed, saying with a smile "Do you really think so ?" I said; "Definitely, most tables would have collapsed by now".
