may 2013 District News Review EAST aurora union free school district The 2013 Post Prom celebration was held at the high school fol- lowing prom on May 10, going late into Saturday morning with close to 300 juniors and seniors in attendance. The night included games, movies, inflatable obstacle courses, food, refreshments, Dippin’ Dots, a hypnotist show, and over $2000 worth of prizes. Very special thanks to the parents who helped chaperone, set up, clean up, or supervise: Beverly Gallagher, Kim and Rick Phil- lips, Dana Moeller, Rick and Paula Hanes-Stetter, Tammy DeFries, Kynia Zee, Anne Rogers, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Bateman, Mr. and Mrs. DuBois, Kelly O’Connor, Terri Ohlweiler, Sarah Fuller, Kathyann Lorka, and Steve Zagrobelny.   • The Middle School Talent Show took place on May 23 at the EAHS auditorium, with twenty-one contestants representing grades 5-8. Profi ts from ticket sales went toward the Buf-falo Zoo’s planned 1.5-acre Arctic Edge exhibit that will eventually be home to polar bear cub Luna and other Arctic wildlife, Winners included: fi rst place - Maddie Oh-weiler (6th grade) self-choreographed dance to “Never Ever Getting Back Together” by Taylor Swift; second place: Katie Maraszek (8th grade) sang and accompanied herself on electric guitar to “Keep Holding On” by Avril Lavigne; third place: Katherine Markello (6th grade) tap danced to “Some Nights” by Fun; fourth place: Mike Vanner (5th grade) Speed Cup Stacking; Arendt/Terhune Awards ~ Tara Porter (8th Grade) playing violin piece “Vale Decem” from Doctor Who, and Tegan Stoddart (8th Grade) singing “Need You Now” by Plumb. Mr. Terhune and Mrs. Arendt were the Talent Show coordinators

    Barnes and Noble Booksellers held a “My Favorite Teacher” essay contest. Eighth grader Tegan Stoddard wrote the winning essay about English/Language Arts teacher Mr. Terhune (center). A rep-resentative from Barnes and Noble arrived to commend Tegan and her teacher, awarding each a plaque and a prize bag full of Barnes and Noble goodies, with Superintendent Russ (left) and Principal Mambretti looking on.

    Students in Mrs. Burke’s International Studies class attended a per-formance of “American Buffalo” at Irish Classical Theater on May 8, sponsored by the High School PTO.

  • On the morning of May 16, eighth grade students toured American Legion Post 362 in East Aurora, with Legion members supplying articfacts, stories and expertise to enrich the students’ understanding of American military history and the American Le-gion. The event was followed by speakers from the Holocaust Resource Center of Buffalo

    Holocaust Center speakers Mr. and Mrs. Lewin pre-sented information regarding their experiences as Jews living in Nazi Germany, and their lives after they fl ed to other countries. (4 and 5) Mrs. Misenheimer, a Persian Gulf War veteran, par-ticipated in the day’s activities, discussing her experiences as a member of the military. Students were able to try on a gas mask displayed for the stu-dents inside the Legion, and were given the opportunity to harn-dle various military equipment throughout thier visit.

    The event was coordinated by members of the Legion, including EAUFSD teacher aide and veteran Jim Suttel, and Mrs. Kelly Siebold.

  • Congratulations to the EAMS Orchestra and Choral groups for their excellent performances on May 31 at

    the Darien Lake Music Festival!Ms. Nanna directs the orchestras and Mr. Blackwell directs the choral groups

    7/8 Orchestra won fi rst place in their division and received a

    grand champion trophy for overall high score

    5/6 Orchestra won fi rst place in their division

    5/6 Chorus won fi rst place in their division

    and

    7/8 Chorus won sixth place with an excellent

  • On May 18, the East Aurora Science Club and Technology Department participated in the regional Junior Solar Sprint (JSS) competition. Twenty solar cars from fi ve regional schools took part in the event at the Buffalo Museum of Science. East Aurora Middle School eighth graders Ja-cob Ellis, Russell Payne, Sam Chassy, and Alec Vaccare built cars for this year’s event. Their cars reached the second round of competition, and Jacob Ellis’ “The Little Car That Could” won overall best car designed. Junior Solar Sprint is a design and engineering challenge in which students create model solar electric racecars. Stu-dents fi fth through eighth grade compete for design, innovation, technical merit, engineering, and speed awards at a net-work of area events around the Northeast. Through JSS, students develop teamwork and problem solving abilities, investigate environmental issues, gain hands-on engineering skills, and use principals of science and math to get the fastest ,most interesting, and best crafted vehicle possible.

    Michael Lorka has been selected as a recipient of an Erie County Association of Educational Offi ce Professional’s scholarship. This is a $500 award, which he received at a dinner on May 14, 2013 at the Diamond Hawk Golf Course in Cheektowaga, NY.

    Catherine Nicastro, EAHS Latin teacher, has received the 2013 Pedagogy Award from the American Philological Association. This award, worth $1000, allows Catherine to participate in the Vergil-ian Society summer tour entitled, “The Italy of Caesar and Vergil: A Workshop for Teachers.”

    Ten EAHS seniors were recognized Thursday evening, May 2 by the Chamber of Commerce, including: Joanna Cranwell, Em-ily Crow, Kayla Cunningham, Lucas Dana, Elisabeth Engle, Dan Leman, Michael Lorka, Emily Nason, Hillary Nason, and Matthew Nason. In addition, Joanne Ryan was named the Educator of the Year for 2013.

    EAMS hosted their 25th annual Senior Citizens in Our School Day on Wednesday, May 15. The entertainment began at 8:45 AM with lovely piano music during breakfast, played by Paul Blackwell. Tal-ent show contestants and music students also performed during this event.

    The public is welcome to attend the Grade 4 Make-A-Wish Annual Carnival on June 14, 12:30 - 2:30 PM on the Parkdale campus.

    Mrs. Dutton and Mr. Padmanabha served as advisors for students competing from EAMS.

  • In April, East Aurora High school hosted the 13th Annual Doubles Badminton Tournament, with over 150 students, teachers, alumni and parents participating in seven hours of badminton competi-tion. Organizers Christina and Gary Schutrum were grateful to the East Aurora High School PTO, Tops of East Aurora and Del Aureo’s Pizza for keeping contestants well fed and hydrated. Champions were awarded with medals and boxes of Wheaties.

    Community Education for summer will feature Morning Pilates on the Lawn, with the return of one of our favorite teachers, Cheri Wenner. Cheri will lead an early morning group near the Community Garden on the Parkdale campus, starting at 6:45 on Mondays and Fridays during July and August. Jane Schmitt’s morning yoga also will move outdoors in the summer months to take advantage of beautiful WNY mornings near the Parkdale Community Garden. Indoors, Cheri Wenner also will teach Stronger Bodies, Stronger Bones at the beautiful air conditioned studio at EA Fitness in the village.
