The computer program which runs the library catalogue and circulations sys-
tem has recently been upgraded. This will result in improved functionality
and some extra features on the catalogue. If you use our OPAC (online pub-
lic access catalogue) you may have already noticed some small changes.
Over the next few newsletters we will bring you some articles on these
changes and how to get the most out of them.
Library system upgraded
Inter-Library Loans
The Southern Downs Library Service has over 100 000 items on our system
divided between the four branches. However, occasionally, we may not have
what you require. In this instance we can do an inter-library loan (ILL) from
another library service.
ILL requests can be done in person at any of our library branches.
Most libraries will not loan any items except books (e.g.. no DVDs or
magazines etc)
Recent publications cannot be borrowed on an ILL. However you are
welcome to place a purchase request with us.
When an item from another library is loaned to you it will have a yellow
paper slip on the cover. This slip will tell you the due date, and also will
have a barcode on it. This barcode is very important as it identifies
that item on our library system. Therefore we ask that the yellow slips
are not removed from ILLs and that the item is returned with the slip
still attached.
If you have any questions about ILLs please ask at your local branch.

Activities For Children
The Southern Downs Libraries offer a variety of activities for children.
StoryTime is a program aimed at children from birth to
school age and their parents and carers. This program runs
weekly in the Stanthorpe and Warwick branches, Warwick
Storytime is on Thursday mornings at 10.30, and the Stan-
thorpe session is on Tuesday mornings, also at 10.30.
For school aged children the Warwick & Stanthorpe branches host school holiday
activities which usually consist of a treasure hunt within the library and activity ta-
bles which children can access at any time.
There are also several children’s newsletters produced. The Storytime newsletter is
published monthly and the Kids Stuff newsletter comes out every school holidays.
You can read these newsletters online by following links from our Facebook page,
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Southern-Downs-Regional-
Libraries/475451612496319 . Alternatively you can have a copy
emailed to you, or pick up a hard copy in branch.
For children 8 and under the library is participating in the Read Up pro-
gram. Children receive a Read Up card and once they have borrowed
from the library six times they can choose one of five different certifi-
cates. They can then start again with a new card if they wish.
Bookweek is held from the 17th - 23rd August, 2013 and this years theme is “Read
Across the Universe” There will be some displays and activities in branch as well as a
treasure hunt to celebrate.
Finally, National Simultaneous Storytime will be held on the 22nd of May at 11 am.
Libraries and schools across Australia will be reading The Wrong Book by Nick Bland.
This is an inititive of ALIA (Australian Library and Information Association), held each
year to promote reading and literacy. In 2012 over 380 000 children at over 2000
locations took part. More information can be found at their website http://

rowers grow fruit and vegetables from
the seeds and then harvest seeds from

Unusual Libraries
Spotlight on Jack Sheffield
Jack Sheffield is a retired school teacher who has
written the Teacher series. The seventh book in
the series Schools out! has just been released
and Jack is currently writing the eighth in the se-
ries.
Jack credits his start as a writer to one of his
school teachers, who, when asked how Jack
could become an author, replied “Go to Compton
Road Library and read everything you can”.
More information on Jack Sheffield can be found
at his website www.jacksheffield.com which in-
cludes a map of his fictional village Ragley.
