So our team gathered outside the new home, prayed, and dedicated the home to be a place of God’s love, joy and grace. e next day—the team’s day off—they returned to complete the job. With deep joy, the girls crossed from their old cottage into the new. ere was laughter, smiles, and even dancing. e team escorted those who could walk, rolled wheelchairs, and with a team member on each corner of the bed, picked up and moved the bedridden to their new space. Council Cornera monthly update of Congregation Council major events by Tom Campbell, Congregation Council President
At its March meeting, the Congregation Council approved a succession plan for the position of Senior Pastor. This plan has been several years in development and deals with 3 potential phases—an emergency phase if something sudden were to happen, an interim pastor phase, and a call committee phase. The plan will be reviewed and updated annually by the Council. This was done to be prudent in long-term planning, not due to any imminent need.
The annual Congregational Meeting will be held Sunday, May 5 just prior to the 9:45 am service. The meeting will include election of Council Members.

I Love ChocolateThis year’s mission trips to the Dominican Republic and Jamaica used the Fruit of the Spirit from Galatians 5:22-23 as each week’s guiding text: “The Fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” You may be asking what chocolate, fruit, and mission trips could possibly have in common. Fair question I’d say, and worthy of an explanation.
I shared with the groups how much I truly LOVE chocolate. Many nodded in agreement, giving me the sense that I wasn’t alone in my passion. I shared candy with the group, and we all enjoyed our favorite flavors as I explained that chocolate tasted great and made me feel great. Many faces smiled in agreement, and I could tell that I was not alone in my pure LOVE for chocolate… and then I asked the group to give their candy to the person sitting next to them. Oops. That’s hard for those of us who had been relishing this “I love chocolate” moment. I explained that this is how God intends the Holy Spirit – He gives us the Holy Spirit, feeds us and fills us up, and fully expects us to share His Spirit with others.
The Fruit of the Spirit is our response to God’s love and is the outpouring of the Holy Spirit as God works in us and through us. The Fruit of the Spirit - LOVE - is not love like we hear in the movies, and is one of those instances where the English language is simply too limiting to translate the Greek text. Instead of a multitude of English meanings for a single Greek word, we have several Greek words, and only one English word for them all.
Love in this text is not “I love chocolate” type of love. Rather, the love that Galatians is talking about is the same love in John 3:16 when Jesus says, “For God so LOVED the world that He gave his only Son…” This was not a love that made God feel good - He watched His only Son hang in agony from a cross with spikes hammered through his hands and feet. Rather, this was the type of love that made God feel good because of what it meant to you and me.
The Greek word for this type of love is agape, and it’s this word that is used in Galatians to explain to us what a Christian looks like. Agape love is an action that is given away so that someone else may benefit. Ultimately when God’s agape is in us and flowing through us we feel a different type of emotion. It’s a feeling that is hard to explain, but so much more enjoyable than the self-satisfying feeling we get from chocolate, or the emotions that come to us as a result of short-lived experiences.
On the last night of each mission trip, our groups talked about their next mission trip – except this next mission trip is back home where we are all called to share God’s AGAPE with our neighbors.

Are You Stuck in a Bad 3D
Movie?Have you noticed there are a lot of 3D movies lately? Many of us have a bad 3D movie playing out in our lives: depression, despair and discouragement. Where do these 3D’s come from? Possibly from a life characterized by bitterness, resentment and anger. This type of hurt can jump into our life, just like the scenes from a 3D movie. They become so much a part of us that they can cripple our soul.
As long as we keep playing these scenes over and over in our minds, we will remain stuck. The only way for us to get rid of the 3D’s is to let go of the pain from our past. It is important for us to understand that when we hang on to the hurt that was done to us or if we are unwilling to forgive those who hurt us, it allows them to continue hurting us. Letting go does not happen overnight, but working through the 12 steps of Celebrate Recovery gives us the tools to stop the bad movie. Now isn’t that good news!
Before faith came, we were held prisoners…locked up until faith should be revealed. Galatians 3:23 Because of our faith in Jesus Christ, we do not have to be held hostage by our own personal 3D movie. While we can’t change the past, we can change how we allow it to affect us.
Celebrate Recovery meets every Tuesday night with dinner beginning at 5:45 pm, followed by worship, teaching and small groups. Pentecost — May 19Pentecost is a Jewish festival that falls on the fiftieth day of Passover. In biblical times, Jews from all over the Roman Empire gathered in Jerusalem for the festivities of Pentecost. On the Pentecost after Jesus’ resurrection—ten days after Jesus had ascended into heaven—the apostles and other believers were gathered together in one place, when they were suddenly empowered by the Holy Spirit to preach the gospel. They went out into the crowds and attracted attention by preaching in the native languages of all the people present. This created quite a stir. Peter seized the opportunity to address the crowd, preached Jesus’ death and resurrection, and won several thousand converts.
These events are recorded in Acts 2:1-41.
Accordingly, Pentecost is celebrated by Christians as the birthday of the Church by the power of the Holy Spirit. Since the Jewish Pentecost is the fiftieth day of Passover, the Christian Pentecost is the fiftieth day of Easter.
Pentecost is not the coming of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit made His first appearance in Genesis 1:2! Rather, Pentecost is the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on human flesh to give birth to the Church.

What Happened to Those Dollars?On March 16 and 17 I preached a sermon on the rich man and Lazarus. My idea for that day was that I would have a sermon that talked about money without asking for money. Not only that, everyone in worship was given a $1 dollar bill. I challenged people to use that $1 to think about how they spend their money and to do something special with their small gift. What would they do?
Many people put their money back in the offering plate. But here are some emails I received that told of other people’s experiences.
Pastor Peter, receiving the dollar bill was a good reminder that we are blessed with the money from God. I donated $10 to the campers fund on Sunday. Then I gave my co-worker $100 this week as he needs a kidney.
I just made a donation (with additional money from my own wallet) to a MADD walk.
What came to mind for me was what can I do to generate more money? I used that dollar to buy postcards which I have
used to solicit donations for CROSS. (She eventually raised $225.)
I donated the dollar along with a few more dollars to “KidPack”. A program through Good Samaritan Society to pack food for kids at Neil elementary school in New Hope to take home on the weekends so they will have food to eat.
I took my dollar and added $49 more and bought Easter goodies and toys to put into baskets. I will drop these things off at CROSS tomorrow.
The experience reminded me of how lucky I am to have a good job, children committed to doing well in school, a community that is safe, friends that I can reach out to when needed, and most of all a church that supports myself and my family to share what I have in mind, body and spirit. This was a wonderful experience and I appreciate you bringing this to Lord of Life.

Sally Mainquist – One Mission One World: Jamaica was a family event for us. I was fortunate enough to be able to have my two adult children go with me on this trip. What a treat for a parent to watch your kids give back. Pretty amazing opportunity that I would recommend to any parent.
I went 8 years ago with Susan when she was a freshman at Drake University. We both loved the experience and said we wanted to go back. Well, time flew and 8 years later we went. This time we brought Reed and it was so fun for me to see him embrace the trip, write the blog, share at devotions, etc.
We have so much in the U.S. that we don’t really need. How many rooms in your house do you really use? Remember when the kids were small, and they loved a huge empty cardboard box to make a hut out of? The store-bought toys paled next to a huge cardboard box.
Reed Mainquist - In America, I see people with disabilities and never really knew how to react around them. Being at the orphanage really opened my eyes. The children loved having people around to spend time with them and show them unconditional love the way Jesus has shown his love to all of us. Some of the older children could hardly walk or talk, but would take care of the other children like one large family. When we went to church with them I could not believe how aware they were of everything going on around them. The church we went to was Pentecostal, which is a little different experience than Lord of Life, and the children were energetic and dancing being moved by the Holy Spirit.
Susan Mainquist - It was also a wonderful feeling to arrive at the orphanage on Sunday and see so many kids that we worked with 8 years ago. So many of them don’t have a long life expectancy— I was so happy to recognize some of the kids and see they were healthy and happy.

After the girls, came furniture, clothes, equipment, and fixtures. It all came over. But mostly came the love. Westhaven is a sanctuary for those in need. Those children’s very lives would be in doubt were it not for that place where God has done so many amazing things.
It has been a blessing to be a part of this place; a gift to know those who live and work there. And to watch Cottage #5 go from an idea to a home…it changed the lives of those who
live there. And it changed my life and the lives of all who have served there.
I will always remember Moonie’s squeal, and the power of that moment. I’ll remember that home. I’ll remember the love and the grace. And I’ll remember how God works in the lives of those most in need, and the rest of us too.
Mittens in May? All women are invited to learn firsthand about Mittens on a Mission from ministry leader Donna Rizner on Wednesday, May 8 at 9:30 am at Word for Women. Following Donna’s presentation we will cut mittens and assemble mitten packets that may be sewn at home over the summer. Please bring a good pair of sharp scissors.

Build a Cheesy Tower at Lord of LifeEach month one in ten people will miss 15 meals due to lack of food at home. This multiplies when school is out, and kids don’t receive their school lunch. Let’s see how many boxes of mac and cheese we can collect, and how high we can make our tower. Kids can help too! Bring your boxes of mac and cheese to the hallway by the main office, between May 4 and May 19. After we’ve completed our tower, these donations will be given to the local hunger ministries we help support: Emergency Foodshelf Network, RiverWorks Foodshelf, and CROSS Foodshelf.

Kids, ages 3–entering kindergarten, are invited to this royal adventure. Monday-Thursday, June 24-27. Get Involved! VBS is run by many caring volunteers! Parents, caring adults and jr./sr. high students – sign up to be a part of this exciting event.
Club 56 (5th-6th graders): Basecamp on Tuesday, June 11, 8 am-5 pm. $20. What is basecamp? It’s an experiential education program offering a unique environment for
visitors to engage in team-building activities, rock climbing, archery, and more. It’s located just east of MSP international airport (that big building with the rock climbing wall outside, that’s it!).

Happy May!by Angie Schiebel, Director of Karing Kingdom PreschoolAs our school year draws to a close, there’s still a bit more fun in store these final weeks!
We begin our month with a field trip to Stages Theater to see the production “Zen Shorts,” from the Caldecott award-winning book by the same name.
Next we will make and decorate our own boats (we’ll even see if they float) as we learn the lesson of how Jesus calmed the stormy waters. We continue the month of May with a celebration of our wonderful mothers, which will be topped off with a special Mother’s Day Tea.
Our final week of school the Maple Grove Fire Fighters will visit us as we complete our G.L.O.W. (Giving Little Ones Wisdom) Safety Program sponsored by the Maple Grove Fire Department. Our End of the Year Student Recognition and Family Night is Thursday, May 16, at 7 pm.

Church SchoolChurch School ends on May 18/19. Summer Church School begins Sunday, May 26. Children ages 3 to entering grade 3 in the fall have the option of attending Summer Church School on Sundays at all three services. Families go into worship together. After the Prayer of the Day, children follow a Lord of Life pastor to continue worshipping in the Samaritan Hall. Worship includes a child-friendly message, Bible reading, prayers, and music. Parents are always welcome to join us!
Church School runs concurrently with worship services on Saturday nights (5:30 pm) and Sunday mornings (8:30, 9:45, 11 am). Church School is available for 2 year olds through 6th grade.
Be Involved! Join a ministry team We need adults to encourage young people to seek, live and share an active faith in Jesus Christ! Prayerfully consider how you can serve on a ministry team this fall from leading large groups, working with a small group of kids, or greeting families as they arrive, to serving as a team lead to everyone who is helping. We need your gifts! Talk to Kirstin Delp ([email protected]), Julie Hagen ([email protected]), Amanda Clancy ([email protected]) or Raul Garcia III ([email protected]) to get involved.
C3 (Community, Confirmation and Christ) - all jr. high youth, even returning C3ers, need to register every year. C3 is offered Sundays at 6 pm and Wednesdays at 4:30 and 6:30 pm.

The End of the Year Bash is a celebration of an awesome year, a time to welcome new 4th graders to Club 56, and prepare the 6th graders for their next adventure. This year we are going to have a blast with hip hop outreach AGAPE* (get this—he’s a Christian rapper!), different activities going on all over the church, and of course, plenty of pizza!
