In Maya Angelou’s wonderful poem “Phenomenal Woman,” she artfully describes her “mystery” as

a woman: “…the stride of my step…the curl of my lips…the fi re in my eyes…the fl ash of my teeth...” The very simplicity of the poem describes the incredible complexity that women possess. Her power, pride and confi dence are on display.

Those three terms on the front cover - Strong, Beautiful, Sexy –

embodies the inherent nature of women. We hope that within the pages of our Women’s Wellness issue you will fi nd ways to make yourself stronger, sexier and more beautiful – inside and out. The story “Literacy and Hope” on page 13 is a true testament to one local woman’s power and how she is changing people’s lives through reading. Alyse will tell you herself she’s an “aver-age” woman, yet she has taken her strength and focused it into a few places that she knows will make a difference to many. We love her philosophy: “What You Can. Where You Are. Every Day.” She is an inspiration, just as Maya Angelou’s poem, to the power that a woman holds. There are certain elements of the woman’s experience that only other women can understand, even if we have supportive, won-derful men in our lives. The balance between being “feminine” at home and being “masculine” at work, the monthly changes in our bodies or the permanent change of life, pregnancy and childbirth…it’s a blessing to have good friends, and a Mom, to talk to. A Happy Mothers’ Day to all mothers, or women who act as mothers, everywhere.

I’m a womanPhenomenally.

Phenomenal woman,That’s me.

PS: See MileHighNaturalAwakenings.com for “Phenomenal Woman” in its entirety.

YOGA ROCKS THE PARK Starts 2013 SeasonYoga Rocks the Park (YRP) begins its sixth season Sun-

day, May 26 at Sunken Gardens Park in Denver, with Boulder’s YRP beginning June 16th. It has grown to more than 9 cities around the US and includes local ‘rock star’ yoga teachers, music, vendors and Camp Yoga Rock for kids 3-10 years. “Yoga Rocks the Park is not just a weekly event, it’s a movement to bring a sense of peace and joy to communities throughout the country. We want to off-set what people see on the news and celebrate communities that are thriving in a unifi ed sense of family and wellness, and are having fun doing it,” says Vienneau. This year’s line-up includes teachers such as Tina Porter, Justin Kaliszewski, John Friend, Laura Wade Jaster and Patrick Harrington as well as music from nationally recognized art-ists such as Shaman’s Dream, Derek Beres, conscious hip-hop act The Luminaries and DubSutra. YRP also donates 10% of net profi ts from ticket sales to local charities such as the Give Back Yoga Foundation, Urban Peak and Project Angel Heart. Healthier Cookware Consumer groups like the Environmental Work-

ing Group have been sounding the alarm on perfl uorooctanoic acid (PFOA), which is found in non-stick cookware, food packaging and clothing, claiming that it worsens cancer risk and negatively effects immune and hormone function. Copper, aluminum and iron have all been found to ‘leach’ into our food from our cookware, especially at high temperatures. In response, Essenergy is launching their new VitaClay Smart Organic Multicooker, a lead-free, aluminum-free, and non-stick chemical-free clay slow cooker, rice cooker, steamer and yogurt maker. Michelle Liu, Vice President of Essenergy, explains, “What sets the VitaClay line apart is the all-natural liner made of unglazed Zisha clay. Not only does it enhance the full fl avor and texture of food, it helps retain juices and nutrients and is free of the metals and chemicals typically found in glazes and non-stick coatings.” VitaClay was recently voted “Top Kitchen Pick” from Weight Watchers and “Top Rated Slow Cooker” by Good Housekeeping. Blueberry WheelsJanet Oh

A painter for more than 20 years, Janet Oh fi rst parlayed her degree in fi ne art and design into a career as an award-winning 3-D artist in the video game industry. After the birth of her second child, she decided to focus on her art and family. Blueberry Wheels was inspired by Oh’s bike rides around Lady Bird Lake, in Austin, Texas, and depicts the city’s skyline in the bright palette of bold colors favored by the artist. “I’ve been called a free spirit by my friends and family, and this painting refl ects that side of me,” says Oh. “When I’m on my bicycle, I can let go of everything that might hold me back.” Oh, whose art is exhibited in local galleries and held in private collections, is currently working on a series of paint-ings called Healing Shamans, inspired by the towering bald cypress trees of Caddo Lake State Park, in Jefferson, Tex-as. “Art is like a dear old friend—mostly predictable, but occasionally containing a surprise for me,” she says. “It has led my spiritual growth.”

More Sleep Helps Shed PoundsEnjoying more zzz’s is not usually associ-

ated with weight loss, but a growing number of epidemiological studies suggest that insuffi cient sleep may be linked to a greater risk of weight gain. The latest results from a study presented at the 2012 annual meeting of the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior points out that sleep be-havior infl uences body weight by affecting not only how many calories we consume, but also how much energy we expend. When researchers at Tübingen and Lübeck universities, in Germany, and Up-psala University, in Sweden, investigated the effect of short-term sleep deprivation on hunger, physical activity and energy levels, they discovered that insuffi cient sleep increased the participants’ sensations of hunger by raising the level of the “hunger hormone”, ghrelin. The less sleep a person had, the hungrier they felt. After only one night of disrupted sleep, the volunteers moved around less and burned off fewer calories in their resting state than their counterparts that enjoyed a good night’s sleep.

WORKING OUT HOT FLASHESOne of the most common and uncomfortable

symptoms of menopause may respond positively to a simple, no-cost measure. Health researchers at

Penn State report that menopausal women that exercise may experience fewer hot fl ashes

in the 24 hours following physical activity. In this fi rst-time study of

objective versus subjective, or self-reported, hot fl ashes, the

Pennsylvania researchers studied 92 menopausal women for 15 days.

Yoga Reduces Depression in Pregnant WomenPregnancy hormones are known to

cause myriad physical and emotional symptoms, including unexplainable mood swings. The fl uctuations are more serious for one in fi ve expectant moms because they also experience major depression. Now, a groundbreaking study by the University of Michigan offers new hope. Pregnant women identifi ed as psychiatrically high-risk that participated in a 10-week mindfulness yoga intervention experienced signifi cant reductions in their depressive symptoms. Mothers-to-be also reported stronger attachment to their babies in the womb.

THE EXERCISE ADVANTAGETaking a brisk walk or

bike ride may stave off cognitive decline better than reaching for the dai-ly crossword puzzle, says a new study published in the journal Neurology. Researchers at Scotland’s University of Edinburgh reviewed the medical records of more than 600 Scots born in 1936 that were given MRI scans at age 73. “People in their 70s that participated in more physical exercise, including walking several times a week, had less brain shrinkage and other signs of aging in the brain than those that were less physically active,” says study author Alan J. Gow, Ph.D. Surprisingly, the study showed that participating in mentally and socially stimulating activities, such as visiting family and friends, reading or even learning a new language, did little to ward off the symptoms of an aging brain. Study participants will undergo a second MRI scan at age 76, and researchers plan to compare the two scans to see if the links between exer-cise and better brain health hold up.

MAY IS ASPARAGUS MONTHSometimes referred to as the

aristocrat of vegetables, asparagus has been cultivated for more than 2,000 years. It was prized by ancient Greeks and Romans for its taste and reputed medicinal qualities, and 19th-century French bridegrooms, believing it was an aphrodisiac, frequently ate several help-ings on the eve of their nuptials. The crop reaches its peak during April and May. Packing a fi ber-fi lled punch of vita-mins A and C, this princely veggie also delivers signifi cant helpings of folate and rutin, which help to strengthen blood vessels. Its delicate fl avor is best pre-served by stir-frying or light steaming.

Fewer Scans May Lower Breast Cancer Risk

While screening for breast cancer is

important, women should avoid unnecessary medi-cal imaging, according to a recent report issued by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) which identifi ed two factors that increased the risk for the disease: post-menopausal hormone replacement therapy and radiation exposure from medical imaging. Physician Rebecca Smith-Bindman, a pro-fessor of radiology and

biomedical imaging, epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of California-San Francisco, who contrib-uted to the IOM report, notes that CT scans and other forms of medical imaging have revolutionized medicine and can be lifesaving. However, she recommends that women engage their doctors in the decision-making pro-cess and discuss the necessity and safety of all potential radiological scans. To understand the risks and benefi ts, it’s suggested women ask their doctor: “Is this scan absolutely essen-tial? Is it necessary to do it now? Are there other, alterna-tive tests [such as thermography]? How can I be sure the test will be done in the safest way possible? Will having the scan information change the management of my disease? Can I wait until after seeing a specialist before getting the scan?”

MIDWIFE-LED BIRTH CENTERS IMPROVE OUTCOMES

Women that receive care at midwife-led birth cen-

ters incur lower medical costs and are less likely to have Caesarean births than women that give birth at hospitals, ac-cording to new fi ndings by the American Association of Birth Centers (AABC). The rising number of Cesarean births in the United States (32 percent in 2010, ac-cording to the National Centers for Disease Control National Vi-tal Statistics Report) has gener-ated concern due to short- and

long-term health implications for women, their newborns and future pregnancies. The AABC study, which included more than 15,500 women that received care in 79 midwife-led birth centers in 33 states from 2007 through 2010, found that fewer than 6 percent of the participants required a Caesar-ean birth, compared to nearly 24 percent similarly low-risk women cared for in a hospital setting. Birth centers—homelike facilities functioning within the health care system—are based on a wellness model of pregnancy and birth personalized to individual needs. “They are uniquely positioned to provide healthy women and their newborns with maternity care, avoiding unnecessary Caesar-ean births,” advises AABC President-Elect Lesley Rathbun, a certifi ed nurse midwife and family nurse practitioner. “Ameri-cans need to learn about the high-quality care that midwife-led birth centers offer.”

AYURVEDA’S PANCHA KARMAAyurveda considers digestion to be of extreme impor-

tance in the overall health of the individual. Proper digestion keeps tissues nourished while inhibiting the buildup of toxins (Ama). Ama is a whitish-yellow, bad-smelling, sticky paste of waste and partially digested food that blocks channels and disturbs the tissues, organs, mind and emotions. Strong, healthy digestion produces Ojas (vital energy) which stimulates and vital-

izes the entire system-physical, mental and emotional. Pancha Karma (PK) or “fi ve actions” is a powerful tool to balance diges-tion and remove Ama. This ancient detoxifi cation system helps to: eliminate toxic conditions from your body and mind; restore constitutional balance; strengthen the immune system; reverse the effects of stress and slow the aging process; enhance self-reliance, strength, energy, vitality and mental clarity; create deep relaxation and a sense of well-being. Ayurveda recommends PK twice per year at major seasonal change; winter to spring and summer to fall. In nature the doshas become fl uid dur-ing these periods, thus allowing a deeper movement of toxins. An Ayurvedic assessment will determine if one is ready for PK. Contraindications exist for each of the fi ve cleansing actions and not everyone needs to do all fi ve. Devon Beninga is owner of Ananda Ayurveda and Yoga Therapy LLC in Golden. Whole Grains…A Beauty or a Beast? The USDA Food Pyramid advises 6-11

servings of breads, cereals, rice and pasta a day. Yet, low- and no-carb, gluten-free and Paleolithic diets seek to curb grain intake. Should we keep grains in the diet or should we avoid them? With proper preparation, grains can be a very good source of minerals, B Vitamins and dietary fi ber despite their anti-nutrients that greatly impede digestion. Lectins are carbohydrate-binding proteins that bind to the sugars in the cells of the intestinal wall, inhibiting nutrient ab-sorption and leading to intestinal discomfort and gut dysbiosis. Phytic Acid, the main store of phosphorus in the bran and seeds, requires the enzyme phytase to digest. Humans, lacking phytase, experience reduced absorption of calcium, iron, zinc and magnesium when eating grains. To reduce the effects of these anti-nutrients, use enough warm water to cover the grains, add a tablespoon of raw apple cider vinegar (freshwater kefi r or even a little fresh lemon or lime juice will work too.) Soak in a covered glass or ceramic bowl for 8-12 hours, then drain. The grains will require less water and time for preparation after soaking. Then cover them with about a half an inch of liquid above the grains as you begin cooking, keeping some hot water on hand to add as needed. Energetic Grounding for WomenIn the modern society of individual-

ism and achievement, competition is encouraged relating to appearances, jobs and even children’s achieve-ments. This energy is challenging for women who naturally gravitate towards nurturance and cooperation. When one’s energy is constantly stressed, comparing and keeping score, the emotions are stretched thin and thoughts of “not good enough” arise. Focus is on the external world where there is always someone ‘better’ or who has ‘more.’ But if one’s energy is grounded, emotions can stabilize, allowing one to stay in touch with their intrinsic value and magnifi cence. Managing one’s energy can benefi t physical and mental health. Grounding is a method for manag-ing one’s energy and one useful tool is called a Grounding Cord. From a seated position, focus on your tail-bone (base of the spine where the fi rst chakra is located.) Imagine a tail sprouting (it can be anything you like-tree trunk, beam of light, a vine or root), growing downwards through the chair, the fl oor, into the Earth. It con-tinues until it reaches the very core of the planet. Women, Claim Your Energy! In my practice I serve women undergoing signifi cant life

transitions in their relationships, careers and lifestyles. They have come to a point of utter exhaustion-physically, mentally and spiritually. When the topic arises, they nod, release a deep sigh and sink a little more heavily into the chair. This is a sign. In order to get what they want, we must fi nd the sources of exhaustion and clarify the picture of how they manage or mismanage their energy. Our relationships with coworkers, family, friends or partners can feed us energy or drain it away. Often, we ‘spill’ our energy when we exert ourselves giving to others that which they do not want! One client came to me very unhappy about family rela-tionships. We discovered that she wanted community so badly that she became over-controlling and overworked her relation-ships like an over-aggressive lioness trying to keep everyone in the pride. Others resisted and she was left feeling drained, frustrated and deeply dissatisfi ed. It wasn’t that others were ‘tak-ing’ from her-she had to stop ‘spilling’ her energy where it was unappreciated and ineffective. With new relationship strategies and her saved energy, she is taking better care of her body, start-ing school and building her own business. Clarity, energy and connection reside in an aligned ex-

change. Our offering is ac-cepted, energy is exchanged, we feel balanced and ener-gized. The key is skillfully reading the energy exchanges of our lives. Our saved energy will naturally increase the passion and enthusiasm we have for all of life. Pill ChillBirth Control Meds Foul Global WatersAfter ethinylestradiol (EE2), the active ingredient in most birth control pills, has done its duty in preventing preg-nancy, it canbegin a second life as a pollutant that harms wildlife, creating “intersex” fi sh and amphibians, and is diffi cult and costly to remove from wastewater streams that carry it into natural water-ways. EE2 is only one of many synthetic hormones that humans excrete into wastewater. The European Union wants to upgrade 1,360 wastewater treatment plants to utilize necessary charcoal-fi ltering technology to tackle EE2 contamination across England and Wales. Meeting proposed limits will require expenditures of $41 billion to $47 billion, according to Richard Owen, a professor at the Uni-versity of Exeter, in the UK. In the journal Nature, Owen and Susan Jobling, Ph.D., an ecotoxicologist at London’s Brunel University, write that more public debate on EE2 regulation is needed. “Animals are exquisitely sensitive to it,” observes Jobling. Owen queries: “Are we willing to pay this cost as a society or would we prefer to live with the environmental impact?”

Suspect SniffsPleasing Aromas Harbor Hidden Dangers

A special aroma may be pleasing to the senses and psyche, but some perfume fra-grances contain dangerous synthetic and toxic ingredients that can enter the body through the skin and lungs. Scientists at the Hospital General Uni-versitario de Valencia, in Spain, found that about one in every 10 people will consequently suffer allergic reactions that include itchy, scaly, discolored, painful skin and asthma attacks. The European Union Scientifi c Committee on Cosmetic and Non-Food Products warns against their damage to the immune and endocrine systems, and Greenpeace cautions that the harmful ingredients can enter ecosystems. Consumers should check labels and avoid sulfates, phthalates, parabens, neomycin, galaxolide, limonene, linalool, bacitracin, cobalt chloride, tolu balsam (myroxylon pereirae), petrochemicals and propylene gly-col, as well as anything referred to as “synthetic” or “artifi cial” fragrance. Instead, the Natural Perfumers Guild (NPG) promotes plant-based raw ma-terials such as herbs, fl owers, spices, leaves, bark and seeds; minerals, such as amber; essential oils; and tincture of vanilla. However, even excessive concen-trations of natural ingredients like tea tree, lavender and citrus peel oils may trigger allergic reactions, according to the Environmental Working Group. Moderation is suggested. Look for makers that are members of the NPG or carry the Natural Products Associa-tion seal or organic certifi cation by the U.S. Department of Agriculture or nonprofi t NSF International.

For 3 years now the organizer of the Golden chapter of the Pulpwood Queens book club, Alyse Urice, has been telling us about her “little project” of leaving small bundles of

used books at bus stops, unemployment offi ces, grocery stores and other unlikely places. Her project has blossomed into a home-based, not-for-profi t organization, Literacy and Hope. Locally, besides distributing bundles of “pre-loved books” to low-income folks, she has stocked empty bookshelves for a low-income apartment complex in Arvada and put author-donated books into the hands of The Homecoming Queens, a monthly book group for women in transitional housing through the Lakewood-based non-profi t, STRIDE. Beyond the immediate community, Alyse and her family drove a truck fi lled with enough books to create a school

library to Allen, South Dakota for the American Horse School on the Pine Ridge Reservation. There are fi ve more schools with empty shelves. Alyse hopes to make fi ve more “little” trips. Literacy and Hope stands as proof that a single person can affect change in their community with just a little extra effort. Their motto -“What you can. Where you are. Every day” - encourages others to take action in their own communities using personal, manageable ideas. The list is growing at LiteracyandHope.com where Alyse has started “365 Days of Literacy and Hope” ideas you might want to check out.

1. Drop off your unwanted books: Denise Irby, owner of Always Clean in Denver, is sponsoring Alyse’s efforts by offering her storefront to collect books. 4307 Tennyson St., 303-431-9808. Call ahead.

2. Storage Space: do you have a garage, storage unit or other area that could house a few hundred books?

3. Pay It Forward: bundle your gently-used books, and leave it with a friendly note for a stranger who might not otherwise have reading material. Ask them to pay it forward too.

4. Transportation: Gas money is needed to get school library books to the reservation schools.

5. Authors: Do you have a published book that you could give several copies to the Homecoming Queens, American Horse School and/or the dona-tion program?

6. Literacy and Hope will host a World Book Night event for seniors in a Denver retirement village and is looking for large print books.

Cosmetic Acupunctureby Denise Ellinger

According to the most recent data from

the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons there were 11.5 million aesthetic procedures per-formed in 2005, including 3.3 million Botox injections and 455,000 liposuctions. Americans spent $12.4 bil-lion on procedures to look ‘good’ in 2005. And 7-15% of Americans can be diagnosed with body dysmorphic disor-der due to their dysfunctional obsession with their body image. While cosmetic procedures have advanced, recovery times have shortened and beauty is increasingly affordable, many seek more ‘natural’ alternatives to look their best. Cosmetic acupuncture is used with a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners’ diagnosis and differentiation that emphasizes the anti-aging properties of Chinese medicine. Skin structure is analyzed from both Eastern and Western perspec-tives and food choices are examined for their nutritive and energetic properties. Then, a specifi c protocol and needling technique geared towards cosmetic effect is used. Aside from balancing a patient’s energy, the needling causes micro-traumas that stimulate fi bro-blasts to form new collagen and elastin fi bers. The Journal of Clinical Acupuncture reported in 1996 that the effects could be expected to last 3-5 years and are enhanced with healthy lifestyle habits. Patient reported benefi ts include: fi rmer skin and jaw line; reduced and softened wrinkles; more even skin tone; reduction of acne and rosacea; increased sense of well being; reduction of hot fl ashes; improved digestion; better sleep. Cosmetic acupuncture is not a facelift, it leaves no scars or rearranged tissue. It can be repeated after signifi cant illness or stressful periods in life. It is NOT surgery and cannot correct a deviated septum, reshape boney structures nor accomplish breast reduction. The most signifi cant risk is bruising and a very slight risk of numbness or nerve damage. When considering cosmetic acupuncture, look for specialists well-versed in plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures as well as cosmetic acupuncture. They should discuss the benefi ts and risks, as well as long-term effects and goals. Then the patient can make an informed decision. Cosmetic Acupuncture is part of a larger commitment to a healthy lifestyle. It’s for the person who isn’t afraid to be their age, but wants to look fantastic doing it. Denise Ellinger, L.Ac., founder of the Cosmetic Rejuvenation Acupuncture System, is an instructor at the Colorado School for Traditional Chinese Medicine. ABCCosmeticAcupuncture.com

Calm Restless Legs Naturally by Steven Frank

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) can wake both sufferers and their partners at night, and more

people suffer than realize it. Even when both continue to doze through a bout of restlessness, it hampers the quality of sleep and can cause them to begin the day fatigued. Some people only notice that a problem exists by its absence when a vacation or business trip prompts sleeping in separate beds, the calmer partner will enjoy deeper, more restful sleep. Other problems can follow if the syndrome is left untreated. A 2011 study by the Interdisciplin-ary Pain Centre at University Medical Centre, in Freiburg, Germany, reported that untreated RLS patients exhibited depression, anxiety, compulsiv-ity and other impaired behaviors. With topical application of appropriate herbs, oversensitive nerves in legs can be settled and the muscles can be made less responsive to such stim-ulation. Cramp bark, St. John’s wort and wild yam have been used for centuries to relax oversensi-tive nerves and relieve residual tension in skeletal muscles. Sage also has a history of medicinal use, including modern-day application as an antispas-modic. Rosemary, another essential herb, is used to increase circulation and help fl ush toxins built up in stagnant muscle fi bers. The journal Interna-tional Clinical Psychopharmacology also recently reported that peppermint and lavender work to naturally relax the body. Combining all of these plants can prove an advantageous herbal treatment for RLS. Place a ta-blespoon of each herb in a cup of hot (not boiling) water to produce a decoction that can be spread or rolled on the legs. The liquid will be absorbed into the skin within a few minutes and leg restless-ness will subside and motion will cease. Steven Frank is an innovative Herbalist and owner of NaturesRiteRemedies.com. Healing with Earth Acupunctureby Beth Kuper, Path of Chi Feng Shui

The practice of earth acupuncture has many

similarities with human acupuncture. Just as a weakness may develop in one of our organs, leading to illness, natural weak-nesses occur in the earth. Geopathic stress may be caused by concentrated minerals, rock strata, radon and geothermal water. Additionally, polarized ley lines form a natural, worldwide grid carrying positive/negative charges. Positive intersections create ‘vortexes’ where people often locate sacred places while negative intersections create stressful energy fi elds. Man-made technologies such as electric power lines, electric motors, cell phones/towers and WiFi also create stressful electromagnetic fi elds (EMF). Earth Acupuncture seeks to map these stress points and to mitigate them using special tools such as unique copper rods. The potential dangers of these negative electrical and EMF stresses are still being debated, but the public is increasingly warned about using a cel phone near the head (or in a front pocket!) or living too close to power lines. Since the human body runs on chemical electricity, it’s no wonder these stresses have been linked to allergies, sleep problems, depression/anxi-ety, illness and auto-immune conditions. The ancient art of dowsing, or ‘divining,’ dates back 150,000 years according to cave drawings. The trained dowser uses the familiar forked branch, pendulum or L-shaped rods to access the subconscious, innate wisdom in order to ‘feel’ a yes/+ or no/- answer to questions. Dowsing is still used in the pharmaceutical, mining, oil and gas industries, as well as by builders, construction companies and the military. Master Dowser Karen Rice King uses dowsing to locate geopa-thic and man-made stresses on the land. She dowses for negative stress lines from all four directions. Normally 8’ to 10’ apart, these lines are as close as 2’ in metro Denver and 3’-4’ in the moun-tains. At each stress point she buries a pair of copper-clad steel rods that are bent in the shape of an L. She then has an indepen-dent dowser confi rm the elimination of negative stress lines. Just like an acupuncturist locates meridians of stress on the body and inserts needles along meridians to balance the chi, or life force, King’s rods mitigate stress points and restore balance, hence “Earth Acupuncture.” Recipients report improvements in mood, sleep and medical conditions. King is currently working with a pair of Ph.D’s to scientifi cally validate the positive effects of Earth Acupuncture on adults with sleep issues.

Karen Rice King has taught dowsing, psychic development, spiri-tuality and Shamanism classes for 30 years. For more information on dowsing and the sleep study see KarenRiceKing.com.

No Kill:2 Words that Explain or InflameBy Lorraine May, M.A.

I am a No Kill Open Admission Shelter Advocate, co-founder and vice presi-dent of No Kill Colorado. I believe we owe it to our shelter animals to fi nd a united way to follow the quickest, most effective programs to save their lives. I

am convinced that the nationwide successes of the No Kill Equation* can provide that path for Colorado. But like any true animal advocate, I am willing to investi-gate and accept whatever plan is most successful.

• Over 31,000 animals were destroyed in Colorado’s shelter system in 2011.

• Time is of the essence for each and every animal.

No Kill Colorado was created to bring together a coalition of all rescues and shelters, individuals, businesses and organizations who envision a shelter sys-tem with measurable goals, open admission and saving a minimum of 90 out of every 100 animals. Animals would not be killed for any reason except euthanasia which means gently ending a life of unbearable suffering or of aggression truly beyond rehabilitation.

• The fi rst No Kill shelter was created in San Francisco in 1994.• Rural Tompkins County, New York became the second No Kill shelter

in 2002.• Today there are 89 No Kill communities encompassing over 300 cities

and towns.

The varied points of view include: NO KILL OPEN ADMISSION Shelters, TRADITIONAL OPEN ADMISSION Shelters and NO KILL LIMITED ADMISSION Shelters (see Attribute Chart*).

• Any shelter or group can call themselves No Kill just as any person can call himself a doctor.

• These declarations always warrant further investigation to reveal the truth!

Language Problems – What Does No Kill Mean?

NO KILL OPEN ADMISSION – No Kill succinctly and precisely de-scribes the goal of not killing shelter animals. There are no deceptive or placating euphemisms.

TRADITIONAL OPEN ADMIS-SION– No Kill suggests that shelters who euthanize are ’kill’ shelters which creates an unfair perception and an antagonistic relationship.

NO KILL LIMITED ADMISSION – No Kill means shelters do not kill animals except in extreme cases.

• Nationally, per capita (per indi-vidual animal) funding ranged from $1.50 to about $6.30.

• Save rates ranged from 35% ($2.00 per capita) to 90% ($1.50 per capita), but their lifesaving rates did not follow any predictable pattern. There were shelters with an 87% rate of lifesaving spending only $2.80 per capita, and shelters with a 42% rate (less than half of the former) spending more than double that (at $5.80 per

capita).-NoKillAdvocacyCenter.org

Missing PetsHopefully, your pet will never go missing, but if it does, here are some tips:

• Make laminated signs, large print so people can see them clearly driving by. Put a photo on the sign, showing unique markings/features of your pet. Include your phone number, the pet’s name, and where they were last seen. Offer a reward. Place posters in the area where the pet was lost that say REWARD and your phone number with a good description. Many people do not want to drop the animal at a local pound and will go back to check for a sign that an owner is looking;

• Alert your microchip company, and be sure your microchip is registered with your current information! It doesn’t just happen automatically when it is implanted, you have to mail in the form the vet gave you. Call Home Again (micro chip ID registration company) with your dog’s micro chip ID number to fl ag the dog’s account;

• Visit each shelter and animal control each day. This is neces-sary as shelters are unable and/or unwilling to identify your pet over the telephone; File a LOST report with each shelter which will accept one; You can fi nd your local shelter, animal control and rescue groups at www.petfi nder.com by entering your zip code. Shelters are only required to hold lost pets for 5 days for the owner. After that, they may adopt them out, transfer them, or euthanize them. It is 100% the owner‘s responsibility to reclaim the pet by acting thorough-ly and quickly. Even though your pet is chipped, the shelters will still recommend you come in and look at the missing pets. Microchips can move and may not be caught in the fi rst scan. Don’t assume the chip will be found;

• Alert all local veterinarians;• Ads in the local newspaper can sometimes be placed for

free; place yours in LOST, and check for ones placed in FOUND; Post your LOST animal, and search the FOUND animals on Craig’s List;

• Send out emails with a recent photo, description and your contact phone numbers to your entire email list and ask them to forward to their lists;

• Keep looking! Walk where your pet would go, daily, and follow every lead!

• Keep the community, and your neighbors, aware. Compiled by Carrie Sowiak, an animal lover and an Elite Personal Trainer and YogaFit Instructor, and Misha May Foundation Dog Rescue and Training, a non-profi t dog (and cat) rescue and training organization. Advice for Internet Datingby Kim Childs

Online dating is nearly the norm these days. What has changed? It’s a perfect marriage of technology and opportunity. There are about 100 million singles in the United States, and ev-eryone has a personal computer and a phone, which allows us to connect im-mediately with people we’d never meet in the course of our day-to-day life. Think about a woman in her 40s that wants to date and lives in a suburb with kids, has a full-time job and whose friends are all married; it can be hard for someone like that to meet

men. Online dating allows her to es-sentially create a love life from scratch. The problem is that most people think they can just go online and suc-ceed, without realizing that there’s an actual skill to it. You can’t just shop for a partner the way you can order up other things on the Internet.

Can you share some tips for singles just starting out?I created an audio series called Finding the One Online, in which I share best practices and some key mistakes to avoid. For example, people sign up for online dating for a month and expect to fall in love in 30 days. That’s like be-ing 50 pounds overweight, signing up for a one-month gym membership and quitting after only losing three pounds because you didn’t meet your goal. The process of fi nding a good match is more like training for a marathon—you can’t log on and manifest a partner right away by talking to everyone on the site in a month’s time. That’s completely unrealistic, and yet it’s the number one reason people fail, be-cause they expect too much too soon

and don’t stick around long enough to learn how to use the system.

What are some best practices once you commit to the process?Don’t write an online profi le that’s full of adjectives, activities and clichés. Telling a story that illustrates who you are is much more enticing. Post a pic-ture taken within the past year, have a clever user name and write initial emails that are funny and confi dent. I like the idea of fl irting with a poten-tially special someone online, moving from email to the phone and making plans for a real-life date over the course of about a week. That’s a good, organic process. My preference is to meet for drinks on a Saturday night, but it doesn’t have to be cocktails if that’s not your scene. I just like the romantic atmo-sphere of meeting for drinks because dinner dates tend to be too static and coffee dates are too casual. The goal is not to meet tons of people as quickly as possible. The goal is to build up trust and rapport via email and phone communications, so that when you do go on a fi rst date,

it’s comfortable and actually feels like a second date. I encourage my clients to go on real dates, not interviews.

Many people make a list of qualities they desire in a partner. What do you think should top that list? The things that sustain a marriage are kindness, consistency, compromise, laughter, shared values and trust. Those should be at the top of your list, instead of height, weight, age or income. The problem is that such qualities may not appear in someone’s online profi le or even on the fi rst date. Too many couples make decisions based on chemistry, and that can be a terrible predictor of suc-cess for a lasting romantic relationship.

Most of us like to think that we’ll be vibrant, energetic, smart and yes, gorgeous,

until the end of our lives. This isn’t an unattainable fantasy—

even if past poor lifestyle choices may have tar-nished some much-antic-ipated Golden Years.

Fortunately, it’s never too late (or too early) to

make key small changes that will immediately and profoundly

infl uence our ability to live long and healthy lives. Experts recommend that a handful of simple, scientifi cally validated health strategies will help us age gracefully and beautifully. “Most of us are living longer, but not necessarily better,” advises Dr.

Arlene Noodleman, medi-cal co-director of Age Defy Dermatology and Wellness, in Campbell, California. “Many people face decades of chronic

debilitating disease, but you can minimize or even

eliminate that period of life and maximize health. It’s all

about your lifestyle.”

Rules to Live ByWhether the goal is disease pre-vention, retaining a sharp mind, weight control, balancing hor-mones, maintaining good posture or supporting glowing skin, all the experts Natural Awakenings asked agree on a core strategy that can extend life and improve its quality in later years:

Take a walk. Or, undertake anoth-er enjoyable form of outdoor exercise for about 30 minutes a day. Greet the sun. Exposing bare skin to sunlight for 15 minutes three times a week allows natural production of vitamin D. Researchers at Boston University, Harvard University and others attest that suffi cient doses of the vitamin help prevent cancer, heart disease, diabetes, depression, obesity, osteoporosis and osteoarthritis, relieve menopausal symptoms and support longevity. Drink plenty of water. Hydration is key to cell health and overall proper body functions. Aim for consuming one ounce of water every day for every two pounds of body weight. Eat a healthy diet. This means lots of vegetables and fi sh, some lean meats and poultry and moderate amounts of fruits and grains for weight control; abundant antioxidants to prevent deterioration that leads to chronic disease; and vital nutrients to support and extend life. Avoid sugars in all forms, simple carbohydrates, processed foods and for many, wheat and wheat gluten, especially for those with excess abdominal fat. Get a good night’s sleep. Eight hours is more than beauty sleep. Studies consistently report that it’s essential for energy and the prevention of a host of diseases, including obesity, diabetes, heart disease and cancer (Nurses’ Health Study; plus UK research in Diabetes Care, the European Heart Journal and British Journal of Cancer). Regular turning in and waking times, plus sleeping in a dark room, are important to optimize melatonin production; it is not true that we need less sleep as we age. Use the right supplements. Take a high-quality multivitamin every day, preferably an organic product based on whole foods for optimum nutrition. Fish oil is also essential for nearly everyone for heart, brain and joint health. Vitamin D is critical, especially in the winter months and for darker-skinned people that need greater sun exposure to manufacture it. Also add curcumin; according to

numerous clinical studies, including those from Baylor University and the University of California-Los Angeles, it can help prevent and even reverse cancer, Alzheimer’s, osteoarthritis, skin diseases and digestive disorders.

Prevent DementiaCaregivers for parents or other relatives with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia are often concerned about experiencing such regression themselves. “There is some evidence that a tendency to memory loss can be inherited, but in any case, there are things you can do to prevent and even possibly reverse memory loss,” counsels Noodleman. Reducing stress is the best way to keep a sharp mind, she says. “Chronic stress inhibits the cerebral cortex (the brain’s gray matter, responsible for higher mind function, including memory), resulting in a lack of judgment and other impaired brain function. So, manage stress and memory function will improve.” Deep breathing and increased oxygenation of the blood helps relieve stress and deliver nutrients to brain cells. Practicing yoga postures like the shoulder stand and headstand, or exercises using an inversion table, for just a few minutes a day can improve circulation to the brain and may help keep brain cells intact. “It’s important to keep brain cells healthy and alive by keeping blood sugars and blood pressure under control,” urges Doctor of Osteopathy Lisa Ganghu, an internal medicine specialist and clinical assistant professor at New York University’s Langone Medical Center, in New York City. High blood pressure and diabetes are risk factors for strokes and mini-strokes that result in brain cell impairment, she says, adding, “Some research even suggests that caffeine may improve memory and focus.” “Use it or lose it,” concludes Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, an integrative medical authority from Kona, Hawaii, and author of Real Cause, Real Cure. Extensive research shows that challenging the brain with puzzles and language courses, having an

active social life and getting regular exercise are all related to maintaining optimum brain health. “People who age gracefully are physically and mentally active,” adds Noodleman.

Prevent DiseaseA proper diet is a good place to start to take control. Ganghu recommends largely plant-based diets, like the Mediterranean, to keep common repercussions of aging at bay. Teitelbaum contravenes traditional medicine’s stance and says that most people don’t need to worry about salt intake, even if they suffer from high blood pressure, noting, “Research shows that people that follow the national guidelines for salt intake tend to die younger. Instead, it’s important to keep magnesium and potassium levels up by adding 200 milligrams of magnesium and 500 milligrams of potassium to your supplement regimen every day.” To prevent and control diabetes, Teitelbaum emphasizes, “Avoid sugar; it causes premature cell aging that affects all body systems.” He explains that excess sugar and its byproducts age and stiffen cells. Dozens of studies directly link sugar and aging, including a PLoS Genetics study from the University of Montreal. (Also see Tinyurl.com/GlycationExplained.) Reproducing cancer cells typically don’t die as other cells in the human body are programmed to. Recent research by Baylor University and others based on the Human Genome Project strongly suggests that curcumin taken as a dietary supplement (400 mg a day or more) can persuade cancer cells to commit suicide and stop their wild and potentially fatal reproduction. Ganghu further recommends limiting exposure to environmental toxins from sources such as common garden and household chemicals and agricultural spraying (choose organic for safety).

Weight ControlA large body of research from institutions such as the National

Institute on Aging and the International Longevity Center shows that avoiding obesity and managing weight is paramount for longevity, as well as for preventing many of the diseases associated with aging. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that people with a body mass index (BMI) over 35 are at an 18 percent higher risk of earlier death from all causes than those that maintain a normal body weight (BMI of 25 or under). Hormones can be a factor in weight gain for perimenopausal and menopausal women, says Ganghu, so it is important to be tested. She also notes, “A loss of muscle mass due to aging can affect weight because muscle tissue is metabolically more active than fat tissue, creating a vicious circle.” She recommends strength training to improve muscle strength and mass. Typically, two 20-minute sessions a week with moderate weights are enough to create “Michelle Obama arms,” says Kathy Smith of Park City, Utah, a DVD fi tness entrepreneur and a spokesperson for the International Council on Active Aging.

Good Posture“We spend a lot of time driving, working on computers and other activities with our arms in front of us. This causes chest muscles to contract and become tight as we age, drawing the head forward and rounding the spine, which produces a pronounced slouch,” says Smith, author of Feed Muscle, Shrink Fat Diet. Bending, stretching and strength training strengthens the shoulder and back muscles that help us stay upright. Smith recommends a “walking desk”, essentially a treadmill with a board across the arms where a laptop can rest, and the user walks at only one to two miles per hour. “You’re moving, not sitting, and that is really important,” says Smith. Yoga postures like the cobra and the bow are also helpful, as are visits to a chiropractor or other structural therapist.

Noodleman recommends regular exfoliation of skin on the face (an economical home facial with baking soda and water or eggs is high on his list) and dry brushing the whole body. He also notes that new laser treatments, acupressure facelifts

Healthy Skin“Your skin is a roadmap of your overall health,” says Dr. Rick Noodleman, a dermatologist who practices anti-aging medicine in California’s Silicon Valley with his wife. He explains that skin aging is caused by the three D’s: defl ation, descent and deterioration. All of them can be reversed. Defl ation is the loss of volume and moisture, which can be offset by proper internal hydration, healthy nutrition and good moisturizers. “People can make new collagen well into their 80s and even 90s,” he says. Deterioration is the loss of skin tone and elasticity that can accompany stress, poor diet and lack of exercise.

and other spa treatments can help temporarily minimize wrinkles and bring back a youthful glow. It’s not hard to be vibrant, healthy and energetic at any age if one is living a healthy lifestyle. “I feel like I am 30. I expect to feel that way for the rest of my life,” says the 60-something Teitelbaum. “Of course, I’m not at the beach in a Speedo,” he quips. “Who wants to look 20? There is also a certain beauty in age.” Kathleen Barnes is a freelance writer, book author and blogger. Her most recent title is 10 Best Ways to Manage Stress. Learn more at KathleenBarnes.com.

SPRING DETOXGentle Natural Cleansing Works Best

by Linda Sechrist

To secure optimum performance, maximize lifespan and maintain the warranty of vehicles, knowl-

edgeable drivers follow the regular maintenance needs recommended in the owner’s manual. Similarly, many health practitioners, integrative physi-cians and chiropractors suggest that periodically cleansing the body’s inside works—fl ushing toxins and enabling the digestive process and organs like

the liver and kidney to rest and re-set—aids in maintaining, restoring and optimizing health. Whether seeking a dramatic cleanup and clearing out or a simple tune-up, a natural, detoxifying cleanse eliminates accumulations of unwanted substances. Doctor of Chiropractic and Nutritionist Linda Berry, of Albany, California, and Brenda Watson, ReNew Life founder and a certifi ed nutritional consultant from

Clearwater, Florida, are recognized authorities on the subject. Berry’s Internal Cleansing and Watson’s series of six books on digestive health that began with Renew Your Life stress that the process may be both a missing link in Western nutrition and a key to returning Americans to health. They both believe that specifi c medical concerns—including allergies, arthri-tis, elevated cholesterol, high blood pressure, fatigue, gastrointestinal dis-orders and body pains—are directly related to toxicity, which responds well to gentle detoxifi cation. Their suggestions for reducing the overload based on 60 years of combined experience include elimi-nating pro-infl ammatory processed foods, alcohol, coffee, refi ned sugars and bad fats; increasing daily intake of healthy, organic, fi ber-rich foods; and gently cleansing at least twice a year, using a natural approach.

How to BeginAccording to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the onset of spring and fall suggest appropriate times for internal cleansing. Although strictly protein drink fasts are not encour-aged, a minimum of 20 grams of high-quality protein should be con-sumed daily. Read labels and pick a sugarless protein powder. A simple one-day, weekend or seven-day cleanse for experienced or inexperienced individuals begins every morning with a total body dry skin brushing prior to shower-ing, and then drinking a minimum of 10, eight-ounce glasses of water throughout the day. This includes a tasty green juice drink, followed

by an eight-ounce glass of water for breakfast, lunch and a healthy after-noon snack. Watson’s favorite green cleansing recipe consists of liquefying one-and-a-half cucumbers, two stalks of celery, half a Granny Smith apple, a handful of spinach or any other type of green vegetable, a few sprigs of parsley and a tiny piece of lemon. Then, an hour after breakfast and lunch, sip a cup of herbal tea, take two or three capsules of spirulina and two capsules of omega-3. For din-ner, liquefy one teaspoon of red miso paste in eight ounces of hot water and add fi ve sprigs of wakame seaweed. “To fi ght hunger during the day, drink more water with lemon or gin-ger, warm herbal tea or green juices,” advises Watson. To increase fi ber intake, Berry suggests placing ingredients in a VitaMix or the more affordable NutriBullet, which pulverizes everything added, even whole fl ax seeds. Juicers, which are harder to clean after using, separate the liquid from the fi brous pulp, which human intestines need to create at least two daily bowel movements. Add oat or rice bran, citrus pectin or other natural fi bers as a bulk agent. A natural, non-chlorinated water enema using simple home apparatus available at local stores can also be incorporated into the regimen, as necessary, “An enema [initially] affects only the intestine’s lower third, so hold in the room-tem-perature water for fi ve to 15 minutes, if possible,” suggests Berry.

colon health and can nicely supplement a fast. Avoid products that contain senna leaf and cascara sagrada, which are potent laxatives. Watson and Berry don’t recommend rigid “crash and burn” cleanses, such as those consisting solely of protein drinks or raw juices or lemon juice and water with maple syrup and cayenne pep-per. “It’s better to cleanse gently with fresh green juices with meals consisting of brown rice and either raw, lightly steamed or roasted vegetables,” coun-sels Watson. “Any detox program, if followed by eating whatever you want, not only doesn’t work, it has consequences,” adds Berry, who strongly advises easing back into a sensible diet after a cleanse. She notes that one client became ill from breaking her detox with a meal of barbeque ribs and beer.

Garden Weeds for Spring Detox

Often thought of as pesky garden weeds, dandelion, purslane and

wild mustards are actually great allies for detoxifi cation. Dandelion fl owers/leaves are rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidant carotenoids and fl avo-noids that support the body’s detoxi-fi cation systems. The roots make a mildly bitter tea that supports the liver in cleaning the blood. Spring dande-lion leaves make a lovely addition to salads, green smoothies or soups.

Purslane, abundant in our area, is delicious as a raw snack or salad ingredient. It’s crunchy, slightly tart and mildly mucilaginous(it is some-times used as a thickener to soups and stews.) It contains betalains (gives beets their red color) which are strongly antioxidant, anti-infl am-matory and detoxifying.

Wild Mustards (same family as broccoli, kale, and brussels sprouts) grow in early Spring. These greens contain sulfur, which optimizes

function of the detoxifi cation en-zymes in the liver, kidneys and GI tract. Mustard fl owers make a

lovely garnish for salads and soups, or add some ‘zing’ to smoothies. The leaves can be cooked like domestic mustard greens. These three herbs can be harvested without worries about sustainability. In addition to relieving symptoms of menopause and andropause and help-ing maintain a normal, balanced hor-

mone system, healthy eating can yield many other benefi ts. According to U.S. National Library of Medicine research reports, these include weight manage-ment, bone health and fertility and natu-ral defenses against breast and prostate cancers and osteoarthritis symptoms. Despite drug-free approaches to hormone health that predate synthe-sized 20th-century hormone replace-ment therapy, the pharmaceutical industry has all but vanquished eating appropriately nutritious foods as a means to balancing hormones. Why do people embrace external sourcing when natural internal functioning is the better, less costly and more perma-nent solution? Even the current bio-identical upgrade of hormone replace-ment therapy (BHRT) may lead to some biological dependency on these substances. Appropriate BHRT should include an analysis of how the individual uniquely metabolizes hormones and functional foods that can help. An edible approach to hormone health provides deep nourishment for glands, enabling increased production of what they lack due to changes associated with age or illness. Healthy eating likewise reduces the activity of excess hormones already in the body, benefi cially mim-icking their previous function without the unwanted side effects. Here are some leading

food aids to get us there.

PomegranateThe resemblance of the inner topog-raphy of a pome-granate to an ovary is more than poetic homage. Pre-Renaissance Western herbalists commonly held that a plant food’s visual similarity to a human organ indicated a positive health correlation. Research published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology on pomegranates by Japanese scientists revealed that the seeds and fl eshy cap-sules within which they are suspended, called arils, contain estrogens structur-ally similar to those found in mammals. Preclinical results published in Phy-tochemistry may explain why extracts of these plant-derived bio-identical hor-mones mimicking estradiol, estriol and

estrone are capable of replacing the function of an ovary. A Japanese study published in the Journal of Ethnopharma-cology reported that female mice whose ovaries had been removed and were later fed pomegranate juice and pome-

granate seed extract for two weeks showed reversals in bone

loss, uterine weight loss and anxiety.

sinolates, which help protect DNA from damage, according to a study published in Current Science. Also, ever-increasing preclinical and clinical evidence shows that consuming cruciferous vegetables reduces the risk of more than 100 health problems, including a wide range of cancers, like those affecting the bladder and breasts.

FlaxUnwelcome symptoms of perimenopause (which can last years before the completion of menopause) can be offset through daily ingestion of ground fl ax, which can be added to cereals, salads and other foods. Ground fl axseed mixed with dried berries is particularly palatable. As the ovarian reserve of naturally manufactured hormones exhausts itself and prompts an imbalance, fl axseed is particularly effective in rebalancing levels of desirable estrogen metabo-lites, such as breast-friendly 2-hy-

droxyestrone. It contains a fi ber, lignan, that upon digestion produces two important phytoestrogens capable of stimulating the body’s natural estrogen receptors in cases of estrogen defi -ciency and blocking both synthetic and natural estrogen when there is excess (as with estrogen-dominant conditions from puberty to menopause). These properties have been con-fi rmed in human clinical studies per-formed at the University of Toronto’s Department of Nutritional Sciences and the University of Texas MD Ander-son Cancer Center. Thus, fl axseed may be considered a source of plant “estro-

gen” capable of prompting regres-sion of estrogen-sensitive cancers,

including those of the breast and prostate.

Extremely versatile in culinary applications, combining fl axseed with ground cumin provides a me-

dicinally potent homemade seasoning supporting women’s hormonal health.

Many patients come into our clinic saying that they have tried one diet after another with no results. This is because most diet plans are not well balanced, lacking the appropriate and necessary nutrients and vitamins. We believe that treating your health cannot be a one-size-fits-all plan—so we create a treatment strategy that’s tailored just for you. We do this with advanced blood testing that can specifically identify what simple changes you can make to get the weight off and be healthier. This testing can also identify the exact nutrients and vitamins your body needs.

What most people do not realize is that our consumption of fat is not what’s making us fat.

“Good” fats are essential for hormone production, cell membrane strength and energy. The real obesity culprits are refined carbohydrates. The current USDA Food Guide Pyramid states that one needs 6-11 servings of carbohydrates—a day! Since that food guide pyramid was created obesity has risen, diabetes has increased by 49% in 10 years alone and there has been a significant rise in cardiovascular disease and many other co-morbidities. Does your recent blood work tell you what you need to know about your carbohydrate consumption? Please join us for the presentation on Thursday, May 23 at 6 pm and bring in your latest cholesterol blood work. Learn how advanced testing can tell you your risk for cardiovascular disease, how to get the weight off and improve your overall health.

Listening to our instincts can help us stay safe and deal better with life-or-death decisions. Making the

most of the wisdom of this inner voice also enables us to live a more satisfying life in the moment. How do we choose which gut feelings to trust? Here are fi ve messages we’ll be glad we paid attention to.

“Something feels wrong in my body.” Listening to our body’s subtle signals is a critical part of exercising an intuitive sense. The body is a powerful intuitive communicator, delivering early warning signs when anything feels off, weak or just not right, so that we can address it sooner, rather than later.

“I’m in danger.” Social conditioning has helped to create unconscious be-liefs that can cause fl awed fi rst impres-sions and ill-advised snap decisions; it’s vital that we check our subjective feelings against mental rationaliza-tions. If some person or situation feels untrustworthy, pause to pay atten-tion, even if the feeling might later be proved inaccurate.

“I want to help.” Evolution has inher-ently enabled us to quickly “read” faces and other emotional signals. For ex-ample, the sympathy instinct nudges us to change the subject when wedding talk makes a newly divorced colleague cringe or general conversation about past rough

landings makes an airplane seatmate nervous—subtle gestures that can make a big difference in another’s day.

“I know how to do this.” When tempted to overthink something we know how to do, try a little therapeutic distraction, such as saying the alphabet backwards when a yoga teacher leads the class into a dreaded handstand. Briefl y engaging the mind with some-thing other than the task at hand can leave our instincts free to do their job and enjoy the fulfi llment that diligent practice has made possible.

“This is it!” Most people have a great “I just knew it was right” story. It might be about the time they fi rst spotted their sweetheart or crossed the threshold of their new house. When intuition signals that we’ve found something or someone truly right for us, the choice often becomes easy. It feels healthy and good, without resistance or confl ict. Using our instincts helps lead us to smart choices that improve our quality of life.

Judith Orloff, M.D., is the author of the international bestseller Second Sight, upon which these tips are based. An assistant clinical professor of psychia-try at the University of California-Los Angeles, Orloff synthesizes the pearls of traditional medicine with cutting-edge knowledge of intuition and energy medicine. Here’s what some of our customers have to say about Dr. Emu’s Rx for Pain:“It totally resolved by back issues and knee pain in one day. I had back surgery twice and one knee replacement. I still had intense pain and my doctor said I would have to live with it. I use it every night and in the morning and I have not had pain in months. Thank you for a life-saving product.”

Darlene Masters“I ... was amazed at how good this is. It has taken away the pain from my hip/leg/ankle and reduced the swelling in my ankles I get every summer. Thank you!”

Patty Mullins“I was told about this by my doctor’s office. It truly helped my back and knee pain. It is a little costly but well worth the extra cost over others in discount stores. It works so well, I don’t even need to use it as much now. Thank you for bringing it to us.”

Experience All-Natural Pain Relief Like I Did

“Through the years, accidents had left me with a crushed heel, seven herniated discs and a torn rotator cuff. I was spending $4,500 a month on medication prescriptions including for pain and became addicted to oxycontin. Finally, I decided not to allow drugs to control my life anymore.

I became intrigued by an up-and-coming natural aid: Emu Oil. Out of personal necessity to get off drugs, aided by pain management doctors, other medical personnel, herbalists and lengthy research and development, I created the natural topical pain relief product, Dr. Emu’s Rx for Pain.

It not only eased my pain within minutes, it also made my life more livable again. Since then, many physical therapists, chiropractors and pain management doctors have testified to its apparent effectiveness with their patients.” Darrell Hart, founder and CEO of Everlasting Health
