Student of the Month: Sadie Stellingwerf

For May Student of the Month Sadie Stellingwerf, the decision to come to col-

lege was kickstarted by her daughter. “She said to me, ‘mom, I want to be like

you when I grow up, and work at Fry’n Pan!’ I was like, ‘oh, no you don’t’,” re-

calls the mom of four.

In the six years since that conversation, Sadie has given her daughter a lot

more to think about as she grows up. That’s because Sadie has already com-

pleted an associates degree in medical office administration, and will be cross-

ing the stage for a social work degree later this month. When fall rolls around,

she will hopefully start classes for her BA in Social Work at the University of

Sioux Falls.

Sadie says she came to KCC for the small class sizes in December of 2009, but had no idea that while she was

here she would really discover herself.

“I found myself by going here,” she says. “The school made me think about me. I hated it at first— we had to

do all these assignments where you think about you— but it made me explore parts of myself I didn’t know

were there.”

That exploration she says, is what ultimately led her to go from the “safe” degree with medical office into

social work. Sadie credits a variety of people for helping her along the way, but she knows that persistence is

what really got her through school.

“There were so many times I wanted to quit when it got hard,” she said. “But I didn’t,

and it was so worth it. School is a sacrifice, but I know it will pay off.”

Looking For Volunteer Opportunities?

For students who enrolled at Kilian during or after the 2013 fall semester, 10 hours of community service

are required by graduation. While KCC does provide volunteer opportunities occasionally, there are many

other worthwhile causes in Sioux Falls that could use your help. You can visit www.VolunteerMatch.org or

www.211Helpline.org to find volunteer opportunities of all kinds in your community.

If you have questions about the community service aspect of your degree program, visit with your advisor.

Alumni News

For Kilian graduate Toni Powell, working at Sanford USD Medical Center was a good way to use her college

education. But recently, she says, she has been “given a great opportunity.” After receiving a full scholarship

from the VA, Toni has enrolled in NAU’s Nursing program and sees a bright future for herself and her family,

which includes her fiancé and a son, Francisco Javier Soto III, who is 8 months old and just starting to crawl.

“Nursing has always been a dream of mine,” she explained in a recent email correspondence with former

instructor Wendy Jansen, and Kilian helped her find her future.

“I always reflect back on my time at Kilian Community College,” she said. “I learned so much there. I learned

how to be a student and manage life. I also cherish my time at Kilian. If it was not for the staff there, I would

not be where I am today.”

Students like Toni are great examples of the ways in which KCC staff and faculty help mold not only minds,

but whole futures.

Great job following your dreams, Toni!

Open House & WIA On Tuesday, May 6th representatives from the South Dakota Department

of Labor will be on campus to answer questions about the Workforce Invest-

ment Act. Individuals interested in college and finding funding to attend

school will be able to meet with these reps and learn more about the po-

tential for grants and other opportunities. These opportunities are for peo-

ple who are not yet enrolled in college, so you can help spread the word by

encouraging your friends and family members to visit campus and meet

with the reps.

During this Open House current students will also be able to update FAF-

SAs, register for summer and fall classes, meet with the financial aid director and ask questions about pro-

grams.

The open house will run from 10-3; WIA reps will be present from 10-11 and 2-3.

COUNSELING SERVICES AT KILIAN

Counseling services from a licensed, professional counselor are available

at no cost to our students. Gene McDaniel is available to assist the stu-

dent in dealing with personal or social concerns and academic or voca-

tional issues. The counselor will refer students to outside agencies

when appropriate. All students are encouraged to use this service. Ap-

pointments can be made by calling 605-221-3121 or by stopping by the

counselor’s office in Room 121. Walk-ins welcome! Counseling services

are confidential and adhere to FERPA guidelines. College is an exciting

time, but can also be stressful. Juggling work, family and school can make it difficult to

find time to take care of yourself. Gene is here to help guide you!

“Why do I talk about the benefits of failure? Simply because failure meant a stripping away of the inessential. I

stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was, and began to direct all my energy into

finishing the only work that mattered to me.”

—J.K. Rowling, author of the “Harry Potter” series

Volunteer opportunity

The EmBe Community Run is fast approaching. Embe is working on the final route at Yankton

Trail Park and will need many volunteers along the route to help set up, direct traffic, drive golf

carts, direct participants and to tear down. They would like as many volunteers as possible to be

at the event on Saturday, May 3rd, but also will be having packet pick-up only one day this year.

If you can spare a couple hours in your day on Friday afternoon as well, that would be great!

You can visit the Embe website at embe.org and click on the link for more. This event would

count toward your service learning hours.

GRADUATION! For many students, the time to celebrate is approaching! Kilian’s graduation ceremony will take place on

May 19th at 7 pm at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Sioux Falls. The ceremony is free and open to the

public. A guest speaker will join the ceremony and offer an interesting perspective on what it means to be

part of KCC.

Please join us to celebrate with and congratulate our students on this fine achievement.

Front Desk Job Openings Do you receive financial aid? Are you looking for a fun, flexible part-time job? Student

Services may have just what you need! We are looking for a few students to fill various

front desk shifts. As this position is part of the Federal Work-Study Program, students

must be enrolled for classes for the semester in which they want to work, be in good

academic standing, and be able to adhere to FERPA confidentiality regulations. Comput-

er experience is necessary, as are good customer service skills. If this sounds like a good

fit for you, please pick up an application at the front desk. The deadline for the summer

openings is May 9th.

The ABC’s of DCP with KCC and USF Kilian’s Accelerated Business Cohort offers students a great way to earn a BA. By enrolling in this program

students are able to complete their AA at Kilian and seamlessly transfer into a degree completion program

for business management at USF. USF’s cohort will meet 1 night a week until the program is complete, offer-

ing students a flexible, fun schedule and a great degree. By enrolling in the program now, candidates for the

degree will also lock in current tuition rates for the duration of the courses.

In another partnership with USF, KCC is also excited to offer students a smooth transition into a BA in Social

Work with the Social Work Degree Completion Program. Kilian social work students will be able to com-

plete their Associate’s in social work here, then move into the social work Degree Completion Program at

USF to finish their coursework.

The partnerships come at a time when both institutions want to offer flexible scheduling and meaningful op-

tions to local students who wish to earn a more advanced degree once they’ve completed an Associate’s. By

working together to map out a course schedule for each year, develop courses that serve each institution

and provide students with the necessary skills, both Kilian Community College and the University of Sioux

Falls have found a way to help you earn your bachelors degree as quickly and economically as possible.

If you know of someone interested in the ABC, or are yourself interested in learning more about either pro-

gram, visit with your advisor or a member of the admissions staff. There is a certain progression of required

coursework, and the Fall 2014 schedule is now available. Check with Rose Toering for a copy of this infor-

mation.

In Memoriam Dr. Thomas Randolph Kilian, founder of Kilian Community College, passed away at his Sioux Falls home on

Saturday, April 26, 2014. A memorial service to celebrate his 90 years of life will be held on Wednesday,

May 7 at 11 am at the First Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls.

Dr. Kilian’s belief in higher education and community service led to more than 30 years of service at Au-

gustana College, where he helped found the Center for Western Studies; in 1976 he put into action his vision

for South Dakota’s only community college. More than 100 local and regional service organizations proudly

share a past with Dr. Kilian, whose interests included archeology, history and conservation efforts.

He is survived by his wife Lorna, four children, James (Vicky), Sioux Falls; Peter (Tari), Aberdeen, SD; Mary

Kilian Gaul (Hans), Carlsberg, Germany; Susan Kilian, Sioux Falls; and four grandchildren, Katherine Kilian,

Thomas Gaul, Philipp Gaul, and Anna Gaul. He was preceded in death by his daughter Anne; parents, Ward

and Mabel Kilian; and his brother, Austin, Palm Desert, CA.

New Math program

Kilian will soon offer a new math class. MATH 114 (Business and Consumer Math) is a “personal, consumer

math with business applications.” This course will review fractions, decimals and percentages. Student will

also learn about calculation of commissions, interest, taxes, budgeting and basic statistics.

To enroll in the class, a student must have the required COMPASS scores or a satisfactory grade in Math

098.

What this means for you is that if you are in an AAS program and do not want to take the current require-

ment of MATH 102, you may do so if you are a “terminal” student, meaning you do NOT plan to go on to a 4-

year program. Some of the programs that will allow students to take advantage of this class are ACCT,

EDED, CHDP, BADM, Medical Office programs.

If you have questions about this class, please check with your advisor.

10 tips For Successful Testing

1. Have a Positive Attitude

Approach the big test as you'd approach a giant jigsaw puzzle. It might be tough, but you can do it!

2. Make a Plan

The week before the test, ask your teacher what the test is going to cover. Make a list of the most important topics to

be covered. Be sure to plan extra time to study the challenging topics.

3. The Night Before

Cramming doesn't work. If you've followed a study plan, the night before the test you should do a quick review and

get to bed early.

4. The Morning of the Test

Don't skip breakfast the morning of the test. Get to school early and do a ten-minute power study.

5. Test Time

Understand how the test is scored. Read the instructions! You want to make sure you are marking answers correctly.

6. Manage Your Time

Scan through the test quickly before starting. Answering the easy questions first can be a time saver and a confidence

builder.

7. I'm Stuck!

A tricky problem can knock you off balance. Don't get worried or frustrated. Circle it and move on.

8. Multiple-Choice Questions

Start by crossing off the answers that couldn't be right. Then spend your time focusing on the possible correct choices

before selecting your answer.

9. Neatness Counts

If your 4s look like 9s, it could be a problem. Be sure that your writing is legible and that you erase your mistakes. For

machine-scored tests, fill in the spaces carefully.

10. I'm Done!

Not so fast - when you complete the last item on the test, remember that you're not done yet. First, check the clock

and go back to review your answers, making sure that you didn't make any careless mistakes (such as putting the right

answer in the wrong place or skipping a question). Spend some time going over the hardest problems before you turn

in your test. From teachervision.com

Do You Use Financial Aid?

Federal regulations require that all students who receive financial aid must maintain satisfactory academic

progress and work towards an eligible degree or certificate. In addition, these regulations require students

to actively complete their degree or certificate before reaching the 150% maximum time frame limit (see

below for more). If you receive financial aid, these regulations now mean that you will likely need to take at

least 3 classes a term.

Satisfactory Academic Progress is determined for all applicants before they receive their financial aid pack-

age, and to meet satisfactory academic progress, students must:

Maintain a GPA of 2.0 or above.

Complete a minimum of 67% percent of the credits they attempt. (i.e. A student has 6 credits for the term

and drops one class but passes the other with a B. The student would have a 3.0 GPA because the dropped

class doesn’t count as a grade, but they would have a completion rate of 50% because they attempted 6 but

only completed 3.) This is measured cumulatively, so every semester counts.

The 150% time frame limit is as follows:

For example, a student with a 30 credit hour degree needs to complete the degree within 1 50% of the

credits required; this would be 45 credits. Attempted credits count, and they include all earned, unearned,

repeated, and transfer credits (much like when we look at completion rate). Even if financial aid is not re-

ceived or there are extenuating circumstances for not completing credits they still count. We will evaluate

student records to determine if they are able to complete a degree or certificate within the maximum time

frame allowed. When this happens, the student will no longer be eligible for financial aid. The 150% maxi-

mum credit rule also affects students who change their major or pursue double majors and second de-

grees.

Because we want to help you successfully complete your education within the time frame allotted, Kilian

admissions reps, advisors, and the financial aid office will be working with you to help you understand

these rules and determine a clear time frame for degree completion. If you have questions, check with Mi-

cah or your advisor.

We live in a time of constant and complex communications. It seems as if we are continually communi-

cating through phone calls, texts, social media posts, and SnapChats. Communication is probably one of the

most important life skills. It is through communication that we transfer information, build relationships,

and carry out daily tasks. We all communicate; and we all have our own unique voice and style. However, it

is our goal at Kilian to help you learn to use your voice and style to communicate well.

Clear communication is one of the nine PACE outcomes. This includes speaking, writing and non-verbal

communication. During your time at Kilian, you will be given opportunities to learn to speak appropriately

to different types of people and to listen effectively. These skills are especially important when working

within a team environment or building rapport and trust. You will be given instruction in clear writing and

given many opportunities to communicate through writing, using both narrative formats and non-verbal

communication. This involves not just gestures, but your self -presentation. As you progress through Kilian,

it is our hope that you will gain self-confidence that shows in the way you present yourself.

Communication skills are important in landing that first job and they become more important as your ca-

reer progresses. Take the opportunities you have while you are here to improve your communications skills

and your future.

Pace GOAL: Communication
