Greg Reid has authored a new book about entrepreneurs called “Stickability: The Power of Perseverance.” He states the one thing that all successful entrepreneurs have in common is the fact that they never give up. Despite setbacks, a lack of new ideas, governmental and financial obstacles, they refuse to give up.

Sounds like some ‘successful’ Christians I know. I say successful not in terms of profit, but in growing closer to God. Believers are often tempted to give up on God, on faith, on prayer, on church; even on themselves. Life can do that to you. Satan enjoys our suffering. He takes delight in our doubts. He seeks to create discouragement midst overwhelming problems and difficulties.

But God’s power is ours, especially during those trials. Take a look at what God promises:

“The salvation of the righteous comes from the Lord; he is their stronghold in time of trouble.” (Psalm 37:39)

“For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.” (2 Corinthians 1:5)

“For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” (2 Corinthians 4:17)

“The Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials…” (2 Peter 2:9)

Don’t give up! Whatever you do, don’t give up. God is with you every step of the way.

caleb & joshua’s “minority report” (chronicled in Numbers 13 & 14) focused on God’s ability and faithfulness, as I explained in my introduction of this column in the February 2014 issue of the cc:journal. In this second edition of the Minority Report, the intent reamins to present brief snapshorts sent to us from our partners serving in our community, country, and around the world.

cru — seeingis believingCentral Christian supports several partners serving full-time with CRU (formerly Campus Crusade for Christ) including John and Amy Rozzell (Portland, Oregon), Ilir and Lida Stavos (Albania), and Mike and Debby Fleetwood (Orlando, Florida).

Mike and Debby recently sent us a copy of the newly released “children’s” version of the “Jesus film”. They also reported in a newsletter that “every eight seconds, somewhere in the world, another person indicates a decision to follow Christ after the ‘Jesus film’.” That means that 10,800 people per day, 324,000 per month, and 3.8 million per year, come to know our Lord through this ministry. “Since 1979, more than 200 million men, women, and children worldwide have indicated decisions to follow Jesus after viewing the film.

The “Paul Project” is another major CRU film in the initial planning stages. It will be the

most ambitious and challenging film project since the original “Jesus film”. It is projected to be released in U.S. theaters around Easter of 2016 and will bring to life many of the incredible events of the New Testament from the book of Acts and Paul’s epistles.

internshipin kenyaThis summer, Michelle Stockton is planning to spend two months serving as an intern with CMF and Missions of Hope in the Mathare Valley slum of Nairobi, Kenya. She has been accepted as part of CMF’s REACH program with several other interns. Michelle reports that the Mathare Valley is approximately a one to two square mile area in Nairobi in which approximately 800,000 people reside in extreme poverty.

The main focus of Michelle’s ministry is to “show God’s love through Community Health Evangelism (CHE). CHE is a program that seeks to transform individual’s lives physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

She will serve as part of a team that will be providing HIV/AIDS education, making home visits in the slums, working with children in the schools, and ultimately sharing the love of Christ with those who do not know Him.

Michelle has asked for prayer partners and for financial support from her church family. Online or donations by check can be made to the church and designated for Michelle’s Kenya internship this summer.

ebola outbreakin west africaAt the time of this writing (early April), Pioneer Bible Translators (PBT) reported the following concerning the recent Ebola outbreak in the country of Guinea. “The Ebola outbreak continues with 112 identified cases. PBT’s workers in the regions of the country most affected are all back in the U.S. This past week, outside medical aid has continued to come into the country. I s o l a t i o n wards have been set up and free healthcare is being given to those suffering from and exposed to Ebola. Unfortunately, the disease spread to the captial this week.”

PBT personnel are taking precautions to protect themselves from the disease. The ministry is doing everything possible to continue the work safely and monitoring

the situation closely. They ask for our prayers for the country and specifically for this situation.

the privilegeof influenceChoices Medical Clinic (Choices) has been entrusted with the opportunity of influencing scores of talented, young medical professionals who are serving with them on their official community rotations. Via Christi is the second largest family medicine residency in the nation. Choices has hosted these residents from Via Christi on community rotations for 12 years. During their time of residency Choices provides valuable experience in obstetrics and ultrasonography. Many of them are bound for medical work in the “majority world.”

This local ministry partner recently became a rotation site for Newman University’s senior obstetric nursing students. Also,

pediatric residents from the Kansas University School of Medicine

also have the opportunity to become acquainted with the

services offered by Choices including their Perinatal Hospice

Care. It is the prayer of the Choices staff

that many of these medical professionals

will be equipped during these time of residency to

impact lives for the sake of the unborn and for the Gospel. n

e are free indeed because of the blood of Jesus Christ that covers all of our sins! The staff

and volunteers at HHH have the privilege of sharing this good news with many people in our community through this ministry.

A recent HHH volunteer by the name of Tyrone Long has another reason to claim, “I am free!” Tyrone was incarcerated for 30+ years and was just released from the Hutchinson Correctional Facility this past March. We can only imagine the thoughts and feelings that Tyrone had that day as the prison warden, Sam Cline, wished him success as he walked out the door with a small amount of money and the clothes on his back.

Warden Cline had called HHH a few weeks before Tyrone’s release to see if we could help with his transition to civilian life. Tyrone had earned a place in Mr. Cline’s heart because of his commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ during the last few years of his incarceration. Tyrone knew about Jesus since childhood because of the Christian nurturing by his grandmother. But, he strayed from the Christian path during his early adult years and ended up in prison.

In 2011, the prison doctor informed Tyrone that he would probably only live another

18 months because of his congestive heart failure. His heart was failing, both physically and spiritually. Tyrone knew it was time to re-commit his life to Jesus, which he did at that time. The peace of knowing where he would spend eternity helped him to deal

with his medical condition. He also started to work on his weight control and lost over 50 pounds! At this point, his health is holding up well.

As his release from prison drew near, the thought of it became overwhelming for Tyrone. After so many years of incarceration, he had many anxious thoughts about where he would go, what he would do, and how he would survive in a world that had changed dramatically over the past three decades. His only son lives in Denver, Colorado, and has

liver cancer. Tyrone found comfort in reading his Bible daily, but still the anxiety persisted.

On Monday, March 17th, 2014, Tyrone left the prison and reported to the Parole Office in Wichita. We then brought him out to HHH and he has been here every day since! He has been a tremendous blessing to us, both as a hard worker and a friend. We are in the process of securing permanent housing for Tyrone while he waits for his disability income to commence. In addition to all of the volunteers that Tyrone has met at HHH, he has also met many people at Central Christian while attending services on Sunday mornings. He is very grateful for the unconditional love you have shown him, and he is thankful for the help that we have been able to give him. Tyrone is already thinking of ways he can give back to others, and is asking God for the purpose He has for him in this new season of his life.

Thank you for making this outreach possible. Please pray for Tyrone and thank God for his freedom in Christ Jesus! n

We wi l l once again have our Summer Fun Days for our incoming 4th & 5th Graders on certain afternoons starting Tuesday, June 3rd with Bowling and ending Wednesday, July 23rd with our annual Glow Dodge Ball Tournament. This camp is held at Central and is designed to be fun day of building, exploring, and bonding with friends. Each child will receive a set of bricks to take home to continue their discovery of great fun in building projects. We will have some competitions in both set-ups and tear-downs. Lunch will be served.

All those attending should wear tennis shoes and comfortable clothes for outdoor activities. These should be clothes that are okay to get wet or dirty. Every student is allowed to bring one already-assembled Lego or other building material creation to display for others to see. However, we ask that they bring no other blocks or materials beyond that one creation. Come join us in the great building fun and exploration that will go far beyond just Legos!

On the weekend prior (May 24–25) children and youth will drop off, pick up, and attend class where they have all year. The following weekend (May 31–June 1)all kids will attend based on their grade for Fall 2014. Our Early Childhood Ministry, Friendship Valley, will promote at the beginning of August.

n a scale of one to ten, can you honestly rank your marriage near the top? In some ways marriage may be compared to sports. Good athletes seldom reach stardom without the help of a seasoned coach. For an athlete, the difference between good and spectacular is sometimes measurable in the millions of dollars. Success positively impacts the accomplishment of personal dreams, widespread influence, and the opportunity to improve the lives of others.

Think about the extensive influence an outstanding marriage makes in the lives it touches. It produces a welcome joy in both spouses, brings lasting stability to the family, and ministers hope to the struggling. God powerfully uses successful marriages as a testimony of His grace to forgive, heal, and prosper in spite of the

darkest of circumstances. Could it be that marriage mentors are to marriages what coaches are to athletes? Surely we want our marriages to bring glory to God, yet sometimes we play the blame game, communicate poorly, and are selfish. Feel like throwing in the towel? Don’t do it. There is still hope for your marriage. How about a seasoned coach to provide Biblical wisdom and guidance to help fine-tune your marriage?

I am excited to share with you that Central Christian has marriage mentors. They are seasoned couples, who have learned by mistakes, through outstanding mentors, by experience, and by persistence that marriages should and can be the blessing God designed them to be. Our marriage mentors want to see your marriage prosper and glorify God.

Dear Central Family,

Thank you for all of the support, prayers and

visits during dad’s illness and funeral. We are truly

overwhelmed by your kindness. The funeral dinner was

delicious and such a blessing for the family. You are

appreciated more than words can express.
