President’s Report

Hello Members, The committee met at Jan Wilsons Place on the 13th of May -what a great studio Gallery she has established at her and Colin’s new house. Amongst a number of matters discussed was the closure of our Murray Street Gallery, we are in the process of looking for other premises without much luck at this stage. Some suggestions that have come to us were pop up shops where we go into empty shops for limited lease time, that would entail a lot of work it would suit us better to have a more permanent place so if you know of any place we could approach let us know. I will be approaching Council and Arts Mid North Coast as part of our campaign and I have already approached Leslie Williams for assistance, this is about five times we have met these bodies without much luck, Murray Street proved we could successfully run a gallery paying some form of rent, at the end of the day it come down to whether or not you the members support our actions. One subject discussed was our future fund raising activities, we have decided that all money raised from now on will be committed to our building fund (Art Gallery & Art Space) for instance the Spirit of the Camden haven and our day at the slice of haven will give us a good opportunity to raise our funds and we are looking for ticket sellers, other ideas were discussed such as more garage sales if you have a way we can raise funds contact one of our committee members. We have been invited to make another application for an Exhibition at the Glasshouse A number of points of view were put forward as what would be its theme , it was agreed that we target it towards impressionism to abstract the thought being that once again members who wished to participate would do two paintings one in their normal approach such as impressionist and then produce an abstract of the same painting A view has been put forward that the committee should have some fresh faces consequently two members have announced that they won’t be standing again in July and some others have said they also will stand aside to make room for new blood or different views on what should be done if that is the wish of the members, so in June if you want to stand for office for any position you need to submit your nomination to the returning officer by 24 June at the very latest. Details are on the front page of Fine Print. Brian Barker

Upside Down on Wednesday Twenty artists turned up for the pastel challenge led by Terri Maddock. Enlarged photos were cut into anything from 12-20 squares, pinned to a board then turned upside down. Pastel paper was gridded with the same number of squares and every alternate square filled in, focusing not on the object but on value, shape and colour. When all squares were completed the painting was turned up the right way and finishing touches added. The results were amazing. No-one produced a bad painting and most were delightful. If you want to loosen up this is a great way to start-as you can see from the photos taken by Terri.
You can see the process here in Loris Muir’s work in progress.
Leonie Murphy’s painting looked good upside down which is always a positive sign.
Ann Middleton chose a complex subject which turned out particularly well.
Anna Wilson painted a bowling scene which was very effective.
Noreen Villeneuve had a ball with this vivid chinese dragon.
Normally a watercolourist Patti Hall was pleased with her upside down
pastel.
Jan Farrell used a black background which was very effective
.
