As I write this column, we are halfway through our spring membership campaign for NET Radio. It’s an exciting time as we celebrate not only the trusted news and inspiring music you enjoy, but also NET Radio’s 25 years of service to Nebraska.
More than 60 percent of NET Radio’s budget comes from listener contributions (you!) and other private support. It’s an investment in quality. News from across Nebraska and around the world keeps you informed. Classical music is a calming soundtrack for your busy day. And, quirky favorites like Wait Wait, Car Talk and This American Life entertain you with humor and insight you won’t find anywhere else on the radio dial.
We’re grateful for your support, and appreciative of the devoted listeners who become financial supporters.
After February broadcasts of high school wrestling, bowling, swimming and diving, NET Sports captured the March madness and the memories of the NSAA Girls and Boys State High School Basketball championships and early spring Nebraska and Creighton baseball games. In between all of these local sports events, we squeezed in our March
television membership campaign. Thanks to you and more than 22,000 members across the state, we surpassed the goal of $368,000 by $337.
Occasionally, I’ll receive a call or letter asking why we need to conduct membership drives. “Why not just take a couple of minutes before each program to raise revenue that way?”
wondered one NET viewer. I wish it were just that simple. National and our local research and results show that on-air membership campaigns are the most cost-effective way to bring in new members.
NET Television and Radio are valuable services we ALL enjoy – and their success depends on support from each and every one of us. NET is a Nebraska tradition that we can all share. Thank you for your continued support.
National Memorial Day Concert Sunday, May 24 at 7 & 8:30 p.m. CT on NET Pay tribute to the service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform, their families at home and all those who have given their lives for our country. Actors Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise co-host the annual National Memorial Day Concert from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. This night of remembrance is broadcast to millions of people at home and to our troops around the world via American Forces Network.
The Homefront Monday, May 25 at 8 p.m. CT on NET View intimate portraits of America’s military families, with unprecedented access to soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen and women who are bravely serving in our nation’s all-volunteer military. The Homefront offers stories of pride and patriotism, sacrifice and resilience – following families through the difficulties of deployment, the joys of homecoming and the challenges of reintegrating as a family after months spent apart.

Did you knowthat NET actually has three channels? Our original channel is NET and thanks to the television industry’s digital transition, we added NET World and NET Create.
All three of our channels are available FREE over-the-air – just as our original channel has been for more than 60 years. Additionally, we continue to expand our online and mobile options for viewing.
NET (formerly NET1): where to turn for PBS programs like NOVA, Frontline, Masterpiece and Antiques Roadshow. It is also one place to watch NET-produced favorites like Backyard Farmer, Big Red Wrap-Up and Nebraska
Stories, as well as our award-winning NET News specials.
NET World (formerly NET2): offers gavel-to-gavel coverage of the Nebraska Legislature along with other news and public affairs programming. Additionally, it carries some rebroadcasts of popular PBS and local programs.
NET Create (formerly NET3): features programs for lifelong learning with expert advice on cooking, gardening, arts & crafts, home improvement and travel. You will be inspired to taste, grow, imagine and explore.
How to find our channels:
• If you subscribe to cable or satellite services, please check with your carrier about NET World and NET Create, as they may be part of a higher digital tier of service.
• If you do not have cable or satellite, or if your provider doesn’t offer NET World and NET Create, you may be able to receive the signals over-the-air with an antenna.
• Each month, check out INSIDE NET’s easy-to-read primetime program grid that lists the schedule for all three channels. Programming is subject to change.

Those of us who live in Nebraska know all about “The Good Life.” But, when two NPR representatives from Washington, D.C., visited NET in January to conduct a workshop on diversity, they were struck by the good they experienced in our capitol city.
Back in the beltway, Keith Woods and Luis Clemens, who work on diversity issues for NPR, talked to their colleagues about their visit to Nebraska and pitched a few ideas to one of their reporters. The result was not just one, but two very positive stories about Lincoln that aired nationally on NPR – and locally on NET Radio.
One story by NPR’s David Schaper focused on the secrets to the economic success of Lincoln, a city with one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country, a strong tech start-up environment and a reputation for being the “Silicon Prairie.” The story profiled several trailblazing local companies including Bulu Box, Hudl and Opendorse.
In a second story, Schaper described the city as being close to an economic “utopia,” with a strong housing market and agricultural economy, as well as good community employment anchors such as the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the state Capitol. He also noted the strength of Lincoln’s private sector economy and its top-notch workforce.

For Ron Hull, broadcasting isn’t a job – it’s a calling. And when Hull was honored with the Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association’s 2015 Mitchell V. Charnley Award, he said it was a wonderful surprise to be recognized by the region he calls home.
“One of the reasons I feel so honored is I am a Midwesterner, and I identify with that,” he said. “A handshake here still means something, and I think this is also reflected in our broadcasters.” Hull received the
award at the association’s conference on April 10 in Minneapolis, Minn.
Hull started at NET in 1955 as a producer-director and is still active as senior advisor to the network and is a professor emeritus in broadcasting in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s College of Journalism and Mass Communications.
Previous winners of the Mitchell V. Charnley award include nationally- known broadcasters such as Eric Sevareid, Harry Reasoner, Michele Norris and Tom Brokaw.

The NET Sports family lost a beloved member when Big Red Wrap-Up co-host Adrian Fiala died on April 13. Fiala was a color analyst for NET Sports football productions for 25 years, and spent 15 years talking about Nebraska football beside co-host Kevin Kugler on the Big Red Wrap-Up studio set.
“Adrian was always willing to lend an ear or offer advice. He was a great friend,” said Kugler. “We worked together for more than 21 years. He was on my first broadcast in July 1994. I was on the sidelines and he was in the booth.”
Fiala was a fixture and a familiar face in many Nebraska homes, and his

love for Husker football was legendary with his loyal NET viewers. He was a Nebraska linebacker during the late 1960s and followed his football career with a career on local radio and television sports broadcasts.
In addition to his “home” on the Big Red Wrap-Up set, Fiala was also color analyst for NET Sports broadcasts of NSAA Football Championships, Shrine Football games and the Nebraska baseball series.
“Adrian had a passion for amateur athletics and he loved Nebraska sports,” said Big Red Wrap-Up executive producer Joe Turco, who worked with
Fiala for 15 years. “He was a consummate sports journalist. He was always prepared, doing many hours of research before he even arrived on set.”
Big Red Wrap-Up will broadcast a tribute to Adrian Fiala in the fall, when the series returns to NET Television. “The last few months were difficult for Adrian, but when it was show or game time, he would present the Adrian Fiala our viewers and we here at NET Sports loved. He will be deeply missed,” said Turco.

Memorial Gift Honors Bob PosvarDonna Posvar recently gave NET a gift in memory of her husband Bob who passed away in December. “Bob decided the charities that were given in his memory, and he chose NET because of its world views and in-depth news stories, which he very much enjoyed,” she said.
“We logged a lot of radio time on the road for his cancer diagnosis and treatments the past three years. Since then, I have found NET Radio’s classical music calming and soothing and have been listening to it almost exclusively,” said Donna.
Bob Posvar grew up on a farm near Schuyler and received a psychology degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). He served in the Peace Corps in Nepal, worked in Germany and Iran and traveled all over the world. After returning home, he earned a master’s degree in computer science from UNL and worked as a systems analyst for LT&T Aliant for more than 20 years. His last and most favorite job was immigration work for Homeland Security.
“He loved having a world view and looking at and experiencing other cultures,” his wife explained.
“We have always listened to NPR, but it was during the years that we lived in Seward that we appreciated NET Radio more than ever. Bob commuted to Lincoln and listened to Morning Edition during his drive. He loved listening to
Bob Posvar with granddaughters Anabel and Eloise.
the news, especially international news,” said Donna.
An avid sports fan, he also played softball and volleyball and coached his children’s soccer and volleyball teams. Son Matt and daughter Sarah both live in Lincoln. “We have always appreciated the games that NET airs, including the state high school championships, as this is one of our main draws to NET Television,” Donna commented. A huge Husker fan, Bob joined the UNL event staff during women’s basketball games and manned the Nebraska Heisman Room during football games.
Their life in Seward was idyllic. “We had an acreage with a huge vegetable garden, vineyard, fruit orchard, and berry patches, and Bob enjoyed his John Deere tractors,” said Donna. They moved to Lincoln recently to be closer to family. “We have four beautiful granddaughters who are the light of our lives and helped Bob get through many a rough day,” she added.

Have a question about membership, estate gifts or planning your will?
Honoring a family member or friend by donating to charity in their memory is a meaningful way to pay tribute and show how someone lives on
in your heart. If you know someone whose life has been touched by NET, we hope you’ll consider making a gift to our organization in their honor. (See the story on page 22 about a gift in honor of Bob Posvar.)
Any charitable gift you arrange can be made in honor of someone, but there are two basic ways to establish an honorary gift:
Give Today:
An outright gift can help fund an immediate need for NET or an upcoming project. The financial benefits include an income tax deduction and the possible elimination of capital gains tax for you.
Give Later:
A future gift through your will or living trust can include a bequest stating that a specific asset, certain dollar amount or a percentageof your estate will pass to us at your death in honor of your loved one.
No matter which basic method you choose, you have the ability to endow your gift so that it lasts forever. Endowments are structured so that you designate the purpose of your gift. Your gift is invested with and becomes part of NET’s endowment and a distribution is made each year. Because the principal remains intact, the fund will support NET’s work in perpetuity.
Making an honorary gift is a wonderful way to acknowledge someone’s vision for the future. Depending on the nature of your gift, there are a variety of ways we can recognize your generosity. One of NET’s planned giving officers can provide additional information about making a memorial gift in honor of your loved one.
