APICS Houston Chapter and APICS Terra

Grande District hosted the first annual

Student Case Competition on April 17 and

18 at The Woodland Campus of Sam

Houston State University. The University of

Texas at El Paso took first place and a team

from Texas A&M University took second

place in the undergraduate competition.

Two teams from the University of Houston

took first and second place respectively in the graduate

competition. Finally, the University of Texas at El Paso won the

grand prize at the competition. As such, this team will

represent the Terra Grande District in the Student

Competition at the APICS International Conference in Las

Vegas this fall. The competition will have one team from the

other Districts plus five International teams.

APICS Houston Chapter is preparing for the District Meeting in

El Paso, Texas on May 1 and 2. For the first time, non-Board

member instructors shall attend the meeting along with

several Board members.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT MEETINGS (PDM)

On Wednesday, May 20th, Dan Swartwood, Vice President of

Process Development and Technology for Satellite Logistics

Group will discuss "Supply Chain Performance using the SCOR

Model". Improving a supply chain is not unlike any traditional

improvement project. An understanding of the AS-IS followed

by development of a TO-BE based on known problems or

analysis of data is a proven approach. At the supply chain

level however we are presented with unusual opportunities

and difficult challenges.

SCOR is a tool aimed at facilitating and simplifying a complex

supply chain analysis. It can be used to dramatically

accelerate our understanding of how all these moving parts

work together and where the biggest opportunities lie. SCOR

is organizationally agnostic. SCOR is an “Opportunity

Identification Engine” that begins by ignoring organizational

structure and seeks to understand how well synchronized our

processes truly are. Our goal should be to emulate the

synchronization of a world-class orchestra or a school of fish

where all members are locked together by a single objective.

On Wednesday, April 22th, Tom Fowler, Practice Leader for

Procurement and Supply Chain of JacksonSimon discussed

“Creating Effective Career Strategies”. The discussion

provided insights about when to consider a career move, how

to effectively search for a new opportunity, interviewing tips

and how to best negotiate the offer. Tom touched on the value

of search firms and how to identify a firm that has your best

interest in mind.

As Director of Supply Chain at JacksonSimon, Tom brings over

three decades of experience in the oil and gas industry. He

has successfully recruited exceptional people for leading firms

in the United States and recruited Supply Chain professionals

worldwide. Tom holds a degree in international business from

Oklahoma State University.

The APICS Houston Chapter is trying new venues to allow our

members better access to our events. As such, the April PDM

was held at the DoubleTree Hotel near the Houston Hobby

Airport. Having the meeting in Southeast Houston, allowed

some people to attend the PDM that normally cannot attend

because of traffic.

SEMINARS

On May 7, APICS Houston and APICS Society will present the

APICS Principles of S&OP Seminar. The seminar gives

managers and planners a comprehensive review of the

principles and functions of sales and operations planning

(S&OP). Attendees will participate in exercises and

discussions on the elements of data collection, demand and

supply planning, and conducting the pre- and executive S&OP

meetings. Presenter Anthony Zampello, CPIM, CIRM, CSCP,

will lead attendees through sales and marketing planning,

resource requirements planning, distribution planning and

more.

APICS STUDENT CHAPTERS

University of Houston APICS Student Chapter members

continue to send several members to our Professional

Development Meetings (PDM). The feedback from the

students is our PDM topics are very interesting and expand

their knowledge with a practical business perspective versus

the scholastic side of supply chain management.

There were 65 papers submitted to the Chuck K. Nelson

Student Paper Contest. The competition allows students in

the Terra Grande District and the Heartland District to

students submit research papers on current issues and topics

in SCM and / or Operations. The competition honors a great

leader in APICS and especially in the Terra Grande District

prior to his passing away in 2007. The winners in both

graduate and undergraduate area receive cash prizes. The

results of the competition will become available in June.

APICS CLASSES

Registration for our late spring and summer classes are now

being accepted. If you have interest in registering for our

classes, please register early to ensure class availability.

Unfortunately, we have to decline registrations when our

classes are full. Our registrations close approximately one

week prior to the beginning of the class to order the class

materials. Further if you register for your one-time audit,

please attend the class since we are restricting our class

audits. The audit determination is made by Chuck Connelly

and his decision is final.

Our new class locations at Powell Industries and Houston

Food Bank locations have been well received and are

improving our educational reach to the greater Houston

community.

My friend Alan came over to dinner the other night. Unbe-

knownst to me, he had a few plastic scorpions in his pocket

(a reminder of a recent adventure).

I saw a plastic scorpion on the bowl of nuts, but I didn't see it,

I just moved it aside and went ahead preparing dinner. A few

minutes later, I saw a second plastic scorpion on the counter,

but again, I didn't actually see it, didn't pause or consider it, I

just moved on. It took until the third plastic scorpion before I

said, "huh."

This is one reason we feel the need to yell 'surprise' at a sur-

prise party. Because we all have blinders on.

The people who are the very best at noticing what's happen-

ing notice it because they're looking.

"You can see a lot just by looking."

Improving a supply chain is not unlike any

traditional improvement project. An under-

standing of the AS-IS followed by develop-

ment of a TO-BE based on known problems

or analysis of data is a proven approach. At

the supply chain level however we are pre-

sented with an unusual opportunity and a

difficult challenge.

The opportunity: If an effective analysis is achieved, the im-

pact on the business can be orders of magnitude more im-

pactful than a typical process improvement project.

The challenge: With a supply chain, improvement efforts must

focus on a COLLECTION of processes, not just one. Supply

chains are complex because they are composed of many pro-

cesses and are often led by different organizational entities

that may not operate with the same objectives, priorities, and

KPI’s. This challenge of completing an analysis across multi-

ple supply chains and multiple fiefdoms is not a trivial one.

SCOR is a tool aimed at facilitating and simplifying a complex

supply chain analysis. It can be used to dramatically acceler-

ate our understanding of how all these moving parts work

together and where the biggest opportunities lie. SCOR is or-

ganizationally agnostic.

SCOR is an “Opportunity Identification Engine” that begins by

Professional Development Meeting "Supply Chain Performance using the SCOR Model"

After completing my CSCP courses, I re-

ceived a promotion at Jetstream of Hou-

ston, LLP., a subsidiary of Federal Signal

Corporation. I am currently the Purchas-

ing Manager. My new role, Project Manag-

er has a very broad scope; “Responsible

for the overall direction, coordination,

implementation, execution, control and

completion of specific projects ensuring

consistency with company strategy, commitment and goals.” I feel

completing CSCP was a big factor in getting this position. I

used what I learned in class to gradually implement some of the

processes identified in the course. I believe it gave me confidence to

communicate with upper management and a greater ability to

demonstrate necessary changes.

I am very excited to be the first person in my company to hold this

new position. Our leadership team developed the position and has

pretty big expectations. I am counting on my CSCP training to help

me achieve the objectives and be “Responsible for ensuring suc-

cessful, profitable, and timely completion of projects as it relates to

our P&A (parts and accessories) segment.”

L e n a S t o o t s

Project Manager - Jetstream of Houston, LLP

After using my Mechanical Engineering

degree to work in valve manufacturing for

five years, and earning my MBA, I made a

career decision to move into Supply Chain.

I obtained the APICS CPIM certification a

few weeks ago. My company provided CPIM

classes at our facilities to help obtain the

CPIM within 1 year. With my APICS certifica-

tion and my previous engineering experience, I recently landed a

management position that combines both fields – my responsibility

is to design our products for manufacturability.

Needless to say, my company knew the value of obtaining this train-

ing and certification, and I can say for myself, having this training

and certification has helped me tremendously with knowledge in my

current role and any future supply chain role.

Order qualifiers

Those competitive characteristics that a firm must exhibit to be a viable competitor in the marketplace. For example, a

firm may seek to compete on characteristics other than price, but in order to “qualify” to compete, its cost and the relat-

ed price must be within a certain range to be considered by its customers.

Companies today spend significant

time and effort looking for

differentiation in crowded and

competitive markets. Many believe

the only t rue sustainab le

competitive advantage is the ability

to adapt quickly to changing market

conditions. Speed and flexibility

are a critical component in being

able to adapt to change. Our

Supply Chain and Operations teams

must learn to build this into our

processes, supply base and

manufacturing systems. These characteristics can be

“designed into” a business but requires a fresh view of the

problem and challenges. It must go beyond the typical

incremental continuous improvement approach and requires

a new view to proactively “re-design” our supply chain

strategies.
