Millard North Band Boosters Newsletter 1
May 2016
Hello Mustang Band Family!
As I write this, I reflect on another outstanding year where the bar has been set even higher than ever! Please
take 5 minutes to read my comments as I have a lot to convey to you – my family!
Nurturing our culture… This year has certainly been a defining statement for the Mustang Band program! Just because the construction
projects to our school are wrapping up does not mean that construction is complete with our Mustang Band pro-
gram! Last summer’s leadership seminar was entitled “Nurturing our Culture”. Students discovered this PRO-
CESS must involve each and every member of our Mustang Band family in order to be successful. It is exciting to
witness our band family buying into nurturing a culture so we can continue pushing ourselves to a HIGHER LEV-
EL OF EXCELLENCE! The bar has certainly been raised higher this year!
Does music REALLY matter? This has been a somewhat challenging year for me in many ways. Many opportunities arose for our students, which is wonderful! This does put more stress on the directors as they scramble to determine repertoire, busing, itineraries, scheduling rehearsals, sectionals, clinicians, etc. Don’t get me wrong, because I have loved the jour-ney and the growth this year! But some instances have caused me to ponder - is what I do every day worth it? Some important observations…
LIFE IS NOT ONLY ABOUT QUANTITATIVE RESULTS. Through studying an instrument, your child has
learned about creating quality music - as opposed to filling in bubbles to achieve the best possible numerical out-
come on a test. Our goal has not been to quickly finish a piece of music and receive a final evaluation, but rather
to enjoy the process of creating something from nothing - as individuals and as a team - and making music in the
process!
OUR BRAINS AND BODIES HAVE INCREDIBLE POTENTIAL. We started with nothing and ended with a
set of performances through a very intentional process. You must have faith that your child has enormous poten-
tial, and it is up to you to continue to use our instrumental music program to continue to exploit that poten-
tial. This is NOT about your child becoming a professional musician! It’s about believing in your child’s potential
to learn and grow through the discipline and process of learning an instrument.
EMBRACING FAILURE IS LIFE’S GREATEST SKILL. Human development is a result of responses to
problems and failures. Parents are not supposed to make things easier for their kids. It’s important that they
Millard North Band Boosters Newsletter 2
struggle - and struggle they did in the beginning! You helped your child through the tough beginnings of learning
their instrument, and they will continue to thrive from this process - IF they continue on in band. The only true fail-
ure is allowing them to quit. And yes, I tried to quit band each and every year of my high school career!
INTELLIGENCE AND TALENT ARE NOT INBORN AND CAN BE INCREASED. Maybe you did not know
this while you were growing up, but your child knows it now — and this knowledge will take them to beautiful plac-
es if they continue with band. Parents and students must take a longer-term view of their learning; regardless of
whether your child is amazing, mediocre, or “not-so-fantastic” at playing their instrument, the potential still exists
for them to develop into a great musician - and learner! Talent is a function of acquired skills - not innate abil-
ity! Their achievement depends on long-term attitude and process of intentional practice. Realizing this fact
while using musical instruction as a vehicle will carry over into every other life skill your child needs as long as
they continue to study it in school! It takes a village… With the continued budget cuts for the district and to the band program, it is going to take even more diligence in order to continue to nurture and grow our program. When you are assessed band fees, this helps run our pro-gram for the entire year! What little budget the district can afford our program is completely depleted by Septem-ber 1st. Without fundraising efforts such as the Big Band Dance, NSBA Marching Band Championships, Savings Card sales, and March-a-thon, in addition to band fees, your students would not have ANY opportunities to: Attend Marching Band competitions Get fed at band camp or competitions Have top notch Marching Band music arrangements Have top notch Marching Band drill Have access to additional teaching staff Attend Jazz Band competitions Have auditions judged for chair placements Offer a Winter Guard program Bring in clinicians to work with all three Concert Bands Attend the NSBA Bandmasters Convention performance Attend the Holland Center performance Receive master class teaching by outstanding professionals Play new Concert Band, Jazz Band, or Pep Band music Have access to music stands that are not broken Play instruments that we did not previously own because we don’t have enough for the number of students in
our program Your funding of the band program may seem like we are asking for “extra” money that isn’t necessary to what we do. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth! When we compare our band fees to other schools in our met-ro area that charge between $500-$750 per year, I would say we are making miracles happen every day! With everyone’s continued help and support of our band family, we can carry on with growing our program and experi-ence an even HIGHER LEVEL OF EXCELLENCE! I cannot even begin to thank this year’s seniors enough for all your hard work in “nurturing a culture” over the past four years and continuing to raise the bar ever higher. All of you are continuing to push to the very end and that is a great way to leave your legacy! Your persistence, dedication, character, and love for our family have held every-one to a standard that this program will continue to strive for each and every year. You are all so talented in so many unique ways. You will all be so successful – I have no doubt! Be remarkable!!! Also a huge thank you to ALL of you who volunteer time to make this vision a reality - we could not do it without you! So many of you give so much to help us out in so many ways. Thank you so much for your continued sup-port of our family! Have a great summer! Mr. P

Fifty anxious 5th graders walked into the music room seven years ago with a horn in their hand
and anticipation in their hearts. Since that day they have made their mark on the tradition of
the Millard North Mustang Band. By the time they graduate in May of 2016, they will have per-
formed at roughly 25 concerts, 20 marching band contests, 16 football games, and made an
appearance marching down Main Street of DisneyWorld in Florida. They were brand new
freshmen when Mr. Placek became the band director at Millard North High School, and under
his direction, they have brought this program to a new level. They have performed in the fol-
lowing Varsity shows: “One,” “Ex Atrum,” “Follow Your Dreams,” and “Roses are Red.” Their
legacy is set. They have led with pride, dignity, and a spirit of service that is remarkable. They
have earned their place at Millard North High School and the right to call themselves the Mus-
tangs. We are very proud of all of you! Good luck Seniors! Keep making music!!!

The 16th Annual Big Band Swing Dance was held at the Millard North High School on Friday evening, May 6,
2016 The Millard North High School Jazz Bands entertained the crowd for hours. This event was the result of the
many people who helped set up, serve, take money, and clean up. Many thanks go to the students, parents, and
grandparents who supported the event. A huge thanks goes to chairman Stephanie Sacco who devoted many
hours to make this event the huge success that it was! Also a big thank you to Wendy Lund for coordinating the
silent auction and to Jennifer Ghanavati for putting together the basket raffles. If you were unable to make it this
year, plan to come next year! The Big Band Swing Dance was a lot of fun for all ages!
We are planning another garage sale fundraiser in 2016. So when you get the “urge to purge” during your
spring cleaning, please set them aside for the band. We would love to have lots of big items like furniture, appli-
ances, etc. If you are upgrading, redecorating, or remodeling, please think of the garage sale as a chance to
benefit the band. Dino’s Storage is providing us with a storage unit at a greatly reduced rate for the garage sale!
The garage sale is TENTATIVELY scheduled for July 20 and 21 during freshman band camp. Watch future e-
mails for more details on donating, volunteering, and sale information!

Many large companies are declaring a lack of 21st century skills in current employees who . . .
Can’t think outside the box
Can’t work in teams
Don’t know work ethic
Aren’t creative
Don’t have problem solving skills
Can’t clearly communicate
Can’t multitask
Can’t manage time
If all of this sounds familiar, it’s because it is what we do each and every day in band! I fear
that too often our public education system puts too much stress on “filling in bubbles” on
standardized tests. Language, science, and math are all very crucial to a child’s education. Is
what we do in band pointless? Research studies and science say absolutely not! Numerous
studies prove that playing a band instrument helps students excel in school, has positive ef-
fects on the brain, and builds life skills. Here are just a few facts about how participation in
band can literally change the life of a child.
College admissions officers cite participation in music as an important factor in making ad-
missions decisions. Music participation demonstrates time management, creativity, expres-sion, and open-mindedness. - Carl Hartman, “Arts May Improve Students’ Grades”
On the 2012 SAT, students who participated in band scored an average of 31 points above average in reading, 23 points above average in math, and 31 points above average in writ-ing. - College Board SAT (2012)
“Assiduous instrument training from an early age can help the brain to process sounds bet-
ter, making it easier to stay focused when absorbing other subjects” -Scientific American (2010)
Music is one of the Seven Multiple Intelligences identified in the brain and THE ONLY ONE
that utilizes all seven intelligences simultaneously. Thus, students who participate in music courses exercise more of their brain than in any other course they take in school. – H. Gardner, Harvard
The combined results of 12 experimental studies indicate a positive relationship between
instrumental music study and math achievement. - Vaughn, K. (2000) A ten-year study indicates that students in band achieve higher test scores, regardless of
socioeconomic background. - Dr. James Catterall, UCLA

The website for the Millard North Band is www.mnband.net. Check it often, especially during
marching season for the latest updates and information. Sign up for volunteer opportunities as
well! Even if all slots are filled for volunteering, you may always come to volunteer as these are
the minimum number of volunteers needed. Many hands make light work!
This year we are not printing our Band Directory in an effort to save money and paper. The
Band Directory printing expense was around $500 per year, and so we are putting the Directory
on a password protected “members only” section of the website instead. You can find the
“members only” section of the website under the “Band Boosters” menu tab. The Band Directo-
ry is located there. In order to access the Band Directory, you will need to enter the password
which is “Mandala2016.” You may print your own copy or access it online as needed during the
year. Use the directory to obtain contact information for parents and students.
