May Showers, May Flowers

Dear Families,

Spring is in definitely in the air! Our students have been busy learning about respect, responsibility and safety in the classroom, at assemblies and outdoors. The students celebrated Earth Day on April 20

th. Many of our students had a chance to take on

different activities such as collecting garbage from the school field and working in the classroom with the lights turned off to help our environment.

The WSD Science Fair was held on April 4th at the Brodie Centre – University of

Mantioba. Our students represented Brock Corydon very well. Congratulations to Lucas G, Naty V, Jacob S, David S, Gilad S, Hannah S, Mikayla R, Amy F, Breeka G, Adalyn N, Zoe K, Maya S, Camila R, Stafford M Carson M, Rachel K, Caspar J, Jonah C, Nate G, Nathan M, Coby S. Also, we would like to congratulate Sam D, Nathan M, Stafford M and Carson M who won at the Provincial Science Fair. Way to go young scientists.

We are looking for help over the summer months. If you can or know of anyone who might be interested in keeping our garden blooming over the summer, please contact the school. We would greatly appreciate it.

Our grade 5 and 6 students will be going to Camp Assiniboia on June 15 & 16. This is a fun and exciting learning experience planned every two years for our students. More details to follow in the coming weeks.

Parent feedback is always appreciated and valued. At this time of the year, we are starting to reflect on the 2016 – 2017 school year and we are beginning to make plans for 20117 – 2018.

The volunteers at Brock Corydon are the best! This year we have many parents, grandparents, community members and even former students support in the classrooms. You make our school a better place. Lunch Program …

Thank you to everyone who came out to our April 6th PAC meeting with guest Trustee Sherri Rollins. We had a great discussion on topics such as busses, budget and catchment areas. Our next meeting will be Tuesday, May 9th at 7:00 p.m. in the school's library. If you require babysitting for school-aged children only please contact Shoshana by May 5th at [email protected]. This will be our last regular meeting and we will be voting on lunch program issues and elections for the executive board for the following school year. We would like to thank Jane Kraut for organizing the plant sale and remember to pick up your flowers on Friday, May 19th. Our last PAC event for the year is our much anticipated Family Fun Fair. It will take place on Thursday, June 22 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. in the school's back field. We are always in need of a lot of volunteers for this event to be successful. This year we are adding more activities to enjoy. If you are able to pick up a 30-minute shift to volunteer please email Jennifer at [email protected]. Watch out for notes coming home soon! Your PAC Executive Shoshana, Michelle, Michael and Jennifer

Reminders: Please be sure to send students with their own cutlery, microwavable container, and a reheatable

lunch. Please do not send lunches that require more than a minute to heat up. 20 lunches at 1 minute each equals 20

minutes of heat up and students have 25 minutes for eating. Lunches taking longer than one minute will be warmed

last!

Weather: Temperature and conditions are changing. Children spend about 30 minutes outside. Please ensure

your children have the correct clothing for wet, cold, hot, muddy conditions – that means hats, mitts, nylon pants and

extra socks are necessary at this time of year! Children are reminded not to take any food or drink outside

during the lunch hour. It attracts bugs (wasps), creates litter and is a

choking hazard.

This month: We are finalizing plans for Lunch Program 2017-18. We value your input as we prepare for the next

school year. Please join us at the May PAC meeting as we discuss and vote on some changes coming to the lunch

program for the fall.

Music …

Ramat Korazim …

“Ceaseless work, analysis, reflection, writing much, endless self-

correction, that is my secret” ~ Johann Sebastian Bach

Gr. 1-3 Spring is finally here and we are celebrating the season with the

following “spring themed” (or should I say “bunny-themed”) songs: “Ten Little

Bunnies”, “Doggies Should Not Eat Chocolate Bunnies”, “When You Eat A Chocolate Bunny”,

“Hip Hop Bunny”, “Shaky Egg.”

Gr. 4-6 The students have completed their “Music Genre” studies. They presented their pro-

jects that highlighted different aspects of music styles. We learned many new facts and listened

to music examples of each music genre. We learned that many new music styles were created,

and still are in the process of creation, by mixing 2 or more music genres together. It was a

great opportunity for all to enhance our learning!

On April 4th, grades 4-6 had a wonderful opportunity to listen to the Winnipeg

Symphony Orchestra playing in the Centennial Hall. This year the performance was all about

Canadian music.

All classes have started to learn about one of the greatest composers of all time – Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 – 1750).

The students at Ramat Korazim commemorated Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) with a student-led ceremony. The Grade 5 students recently went on an archaeological dig in the ancient part of Korazim. Students in Morah Sofia's and Morah Naomi's classes composed letters and are sending off letters to their new pen-pal friends next week!

Intramurals: will continue as in April on Days 2, 4, and 6. We are doing basketball. Grade 4’s will be at morning recess. Gr. 5 and 6 Girls and Boys will alternate between lunch recess and afternoon recess. For students Unable to participate: a note is required from home for this please. Very briefly write down if they are sick or hurt please, otherwise students may be marked as choosing not to participate. Thank you for your cooperation. Footwear and Clothing: As the weather gets warmer, we will be outside for Phys. Ed. classes on some days. Students need to wear runners for Phys. Ed. classes as sandals, flip-flops or Crocs are not safe footwear. Students may want to bring a hat as well. During the warmer months of May and June, as in September, Grades 4-6 students can wear the same leg-wear for Phys. Ed. classes as they wore to school (shorts, sweats, capris). A change of t-shirt and deodorant is always required. Running Club: continues 3 days a week, usually Mon-day, Wednesday, and Friday. If there is no school on a Monday, we will run the Tuesday. If there is no school on a Friday, we will run the Thursday. This is to prepare for 3- 2K races. Please check the calendar for exact dates. Beginning Friday, May 12th the Marathon Relay and 10K runners will meet at 7:30 a.m. before regular Running Club to prepare for their events. This long run training will be once a week, only on Fridays (you will receive a separate schedule for your child’s event training - Super Run, Relay or 10K). On Wednesday, May 17th and 24th, we will not meet at 8:00 a.m. but will be going from 9:00 a.m - 12:00 noon to River Heights JHS field to participate in 2K races. Similarly on Wednesday, June 7th we will be going to Assiniboine Park to participate in the 2K WSD Fit Run. There will be separate permission slips for these races.

Rm 9 …

We are learning about the 7

teachings with an Indigenous

guest speaker. She shared a

book with the class and we

explored the 7 sacred teachings

of love, respect, courage,

honesty, wisdom, humility, and

truth as represented through 7

animals. We will be practicing

these teachings in class!

Rm 11 …

Room 11 was interested in planting

and growing their very own plants!

The AM class germinated bean seeds and the PM class planted zinnia flowers. The process of labelling their own personal pot or Ziploc bag, dampening the cotton balls with water to add moisture, shoveling soil into their pots, and adding the beans or zinnia seeds was exciting BUT the real excitement comes after through observation and documentation of the growing process. The students having been running into class and heading straight for their plants or

bean seed to see if any changes have occurred. Come by and take a look at our plants!

P2 …

While exploring spring changes, the lifecycle and taking care of living things, a new classroom job in P2 is the live vermicomposter. We are experimenting with what our new pets enjoy eating and we are creating less waste!

Spring Celebration …

Passover Seder …

We would like to thank all of the fabulous volunteers who came to help out with our Passover Seder at school on April 7. The students and staff appreciate all of your efforts making the Seder a huge success. Our Seder was enjoyed by all. Special thanks to Michelle Rossen for doing all of the grocery shopping as well as purchasing the flowers which added a lovely touch to our celebration!

Bike Safety …

As the weather gets warmer, many of you will enjoy riding your bikes! Cycling is

an awesome way to stay active but here are some tips to stay safe while riding!

In Manitoba, it is law that everyone under 18 must wear a bike helmet while

riding their bikes. To provide the best protection, it is important to wear your

helmet correctly. The simple “2V1” Rule is easy to remember and helps with

adjusting helmets as well as finding the one that fits you! You should have no

more than 2 fingers between your eyebrows and the bottom of your helmet. The

side straps should form a V shape under your ears. The chin strap should

be adjusted so that only 1 finger fits between your chin and the strap.

Remember, if your helmet has been in a crash or is over 5 years old, it should

be replaced!

Stay safe, have fun & happy riding!
