As a result of spring showers and warmer weather, the landscape is turning a beautiful green and spring flowers are starting to bloom. May is a month when we celebrate Mother’s Day (May 14) and Victoria Day (May 22), open cottages and plant gardens. It’s a wonderful time to plan to spend time with friends and family. You Are Part of a Growing Organization……. PROBUS club specifically for active retirees was formed in 1966 by the Rotary Club of Caterham, England to allow retired professionals to continue to meet together for fellowship. In 1974, PROBUS expanded into New Zealand and by 1976 to Australia. The first PROBUS club in North America was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Galt (Cambridge), Ontario, Canada in 1987. Expansion continued with 4 clubs: Cambridge, Burlington, Collingwood and Surry BC. PROBUS is now in over 23 countries: Argentina, Australia (1976), Bermuda (1+ clubs), Belgium (60+ clubs), Canada (240 clubs with over 34,000 members), Chile, Cyprus, France, Germany (1991, 12+ clubs), Great Britain (1,700+ clubs), India (20+ clubs), Ireland (75+ clubs), Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, The Netherlands (300+ clubs), New Zealand (1974), Portugal, South Africa (75+ clubs), Spain (1996), Sweden, Trinidad, UK and N. Ireland, USA (12+ clubs) and Zimbabwe (3+ clubs). Internationally there are over 4,000 PROBUS clubs with over 400,000 members. Due to the lack of accurate records, in some countries, I am only listing what is known to be reported facts, keeping in mind these clubs are run by volunteers and not structured.

PROBUS has 240 clubs, comprised of 41 women’s clubs, 42 men’s clubs and 157 mixed clubs. In Ontario there are 7 Districts. Clubs are formed to provide social events and scheduled speakers to keep members up to date with community issues and happenings. Many members have formed smaller interest groups for hobbies such as sports, entertainment, bridge, fishing, travel, computers, etc. The structure of the clubs is simple, and members are not required to attend a minimum number of meetings. The growth of PROBUS is accomplished by members inviting friends to meetings or simply by explaining PROBUS to them.

The Port Perry PROBUS is approaching our 1st Anniversary and renewal fees of $30 or new membership fees of $50 for the upcoming year would be appreciated as soon as possible. Please bring a cheque payable to the PROBUS Club of Port Perry to the May or June membership meeting or send your cheque to:

May’s Speaker - May 16th, 2017 - Dave Patterson The Myth of 1492: How We've Missed the Boat about American Indians and How Each of Us Can Make Things

Better.

The myth we have about American Indians (a.k.a. the indigenous, First Nations, Native Americans, Aztecs, Incas, etc.) tells us that they were and are poor, backward, and primitive; they need to be dealt with, pitied, ignored, or helped. But American Indian civilizations are much richer, more mature, smarter, and more valuable than we've been told. The cultures that thrived from the North Pole to Tierra del Fuego before the sixteenth century had huge impact and gave important gifts to the rest of the world. Largely unknown now, these societies gave us the keys to unlock the modern age: deep democracy and freedom, commerce for mutual benefit, and cultivation of world-changing staples like potatoes, corn, tomatoes, and sweet potatoes. Seeing these people in this new light, we can take new steps to improve our relationships, solve long-standing problems, and thrive better together. Everyone can play a valuable part and it's not that hard. Take an unforgettable, historical journey with "the1492 guy", Dave Patterson,

uncovering the truth about our flawed history, fearlessly peering into our mysterious past and bringing clarity to present day affairs ... ultimately, clarity and truth unfold a whole new perspective in our lives! The fascinating journey he takes you on is delivered with the same passion that caught Dave’s attention in 1999, when he first heard Ray Fadden’s message on his car radio. Dave’s extensive research, clear communication, positive point of view, and deep understanding allow listeners to experience their own personal truth and reconciliation.

June’s Speaker - June 20th, 2017 - Paul Arculus Port Perry's Reaction to Confederation

Paul was born in England but graduated from Agincourt High School in Ontario and received his post secondary education in Canada and the United States. He has a B.A. in Psychology from McMaster University, a B.Ed. from the University of Toronto, an M.A in history and an M.S.in Ed, both from Niagara University in New York. He taught in several locations in Ontario and in England but spent the last 20 years of his career teaching history at Port Perry High School.

Since retiring he has written extensively on Canadian history and has published several books including:

• Mayhem to Murder, the history of the Markham Gang, • Steamboats on Scugog, a History of Steamboating on the South Central Kawarthas, • Durant’s Right-Hand Man, a biography of Dr. Edwin Campbell, a local boy who became a founder of the Chevrolet

Motor Company. His latest book is Pine Grove Cemetery, a history and guidebook to Port Perry’s largest cemetery. He is currently working on The Nip and Tuck, a history of the Port Whitby, Port Perry and Lindsay Railway. He is also a regular contributor to Focus on Scugog, a monthly news and information magazine in the Municipality of Scugog.

Paul has given talks on Ontario History to Historical Societies, Genealogical Societies and community groups such as Probus, all over Southern Ontario.

He has also given historical walks in communities in Scugog Township including Port Perry, Greenbank, Prince Albert and Blackstock. For his work in Canadian History he has received a number of awards including the Lieutenant Governor`s Ontario Heritage Award in 2009 and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee award in 2013. Paul lives in Port Perry with his wife Isabel who is a retired elementary school teacher. They have three sons, all married and living in Ontario.

Interest Groups – PROBUS Club of Port Perry Now that the winter Snowbirds and travelers are back from the warmer climates, many more members are asking about interest groups and especially about some of the groups that have not yet been started. So here are a few that have an active interest but no Coordinators to get them going:

• Investment Group • Wine Tasting Group • Wine Making Group • Scotch/Whiskey/Beer Tasting Group • Cultural Event Group (movies, museums, galleries, concerts) • Beginners Acting for Theatre • Motorcycling

If you would like to coordinate or co-coordinate any of the above groups, please let Tim Casey know at [email protected] or 647-521-2565. Tim will help you contact the interested members, advertise the group to the membership and get the group going. You don’t have to be an expert in the area, only someone who has an interest in it and a willingness to help organize the group. All we need are some volunteers. This is a great way to meet new friends and support your fellow members at the same time. And it’s actually not that much work nor does it take much time. A few of our interest groups already have Coordinators from late last fall, but since the Snowbirds were just heading out at that time, the Coordinators have been waiting until the bulk of the membership was back in town before starting up the groups. These groups are ready to go and just need a few more members to get the fun started. There’s some information on the groups in the update material below. So contact the group coordinator or Tim Casey. The groups all set to start up are: Poker Norm Sanford [email protected]; 905-441-1490 Music Jam Bill Walker [email protected]; 905-985-9673 We have a lot of long-standing interest in getting a theatre interest group going in order to go to various theatrical shows locally in Durham and other nearby areas, in Toronto and perhaps farther afield (e.g. Niagara on the Lake, Stratford, Kingston, etc.) and to socialize at the same time. These are some of the most popular groups in other PROBUS clubs. Janet and Tim Casey are prepared to try to get the group underway, but we’ll need one or two Co-coordinators to help out. So if you have an interest in seeing theatre productions and helping out with some organizing, please contact Tim at [email protected] or 647-521-2565

May 2017

One thing that’s great about our PROBUS interest groups is their flexibility. Some have largely the same people attend each meeting while others see some new faces at every meeting. Some groups suspend operations during the winter due to weather or Snowbirds heading out of town. Others see people attending more during the summer while at the same time some other group members head off to the cottage. Some go from a few members attending a session to many attending another session in the space of a month or two. There’s no required attendance for anyone. Group members attend as they wish, and we ask only that they RSVP to emails announcing the time and place so the coordinator can know how many people to expect at a meeting. You can join as many interest groups as you want, and most of them have no cost to participate. It’s fun, you meet new friends and you’ll definitely encounter new experiences. We’re looking forward to seeing you at some of our many interest groups this year.

Hiking Group – Bill Morrison [email protected]; 905-439-0484

Our opportunities for outings have been expanded. The Whitby/Brooklin PROBUS Walking Group has invited us to join them on their walks each Monday morning. This offers additional or alternative activity for our members. The Whitby walks are shorter than ours (1 hour versus our 2- 2.5 hour hikes) and are in urban settings, usually on the Lake Ontario waterfront, while our hikes are primarily held in rural, often forested, settings. Earlier in the winter we had also invited any interested Whitby/Brooklin members to join us on our hikes, so additional benefits are now available to members of both clubs.

In May we’ll be doing about 2+ walks per month.

Check the PROBUS calendar or contact me, Bill Morrison, at [email protected] or 905-439-0484 for information on any of the hikes..

Travel Group – Judy Spring [email protected]

The May meeting of the Travel Interest Group was held on May 4th at Colonel Mustard’s where members shared information about Staycations, providing ideas for activities close to home. The June meeting will be held on Thursday, June 8th at 11:30 a.m. at Colonel Mustard’s. The topic will be travel in England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.

Open Studio - Art - Margaret Adamson [email protected]; 905-773-2878 Our group continues to meet at the Prince Albert Community Hall every other Monday afternoon. It's been a peaceful way to make time for our art interests and to make new friends. Unfortunately, in the past two months, the regular attendance of members has dropped. Sometimes life and everyday schedules get in the way of our fun.

Healthy Eating Group – Suzanne Redford [email protected]; 416-573-0597

Contact Suzanne for the most up to date information about the Healthy Eating Group.

Breakfast (Mixed) Group – Mary-Anne Unwin [email protected]; 905-986-4078

All Breakfast Clubs aim to have at least 6 members attend a breakfast once a month and enjoy pleasant conversation and company. The choice of restaurant will vary. *** We are looking for additional coordinators OR assistants to help start-up and manage some additional

breakfast clubs since the two in operation are full at this time. New breakfast clubs could be either on Monday, Wednesday, Friday or on the weekend. It requires very little time each month. Duties include contacting members by email or phone and calling the restaurant to make reservations. Please contact

Tim Casey if interested. *** We have 2 Breakfast Clubs operating at full capacity. The Tuesday Breakfast Club meets the 4th Tuesday of each month and will meet May 23rd and June 27th, 2017.

The Thursday Breakfast Club meets on the 2nd Thursday of each month with future meetings scheduled for May 11th and June 8th, 2017.

Venues will vary between the Port Perry, Uxbridge and surrounding areas during the Spring, Summer and Fall seasons. Carpooling is an option. If you are interested in joining one of the groups, you could be given a spot as soon as a space becomes available or when attendance is lower than usual. Contact Mary-Anne Unwin, 905-986-4078 or [email protected] for more info.

Members are requested that they record future meeting dates provided and RSVP to the email notice they are sent a few days prior to their next Breakfast meeting in order to provide accurate numbers for the reservation.

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner – Carole Matthews [email protected]; 905-982-2702

The GWCTD group had a great turnout (30) for our April dinner at Royal Ashburn Golf Club. Our snowbirds have returned! More potential locations that will hold our numbers are coming to light, but I think the Royal Ashburn will be a definite repeat.

We’ll be sending a group email for details of our next meeting, and it should be listed as well on the website calendar. We expect a lot of members to attend our dinners from now through the Fall, and many restaurants in the area only have a limited amount of room, so when you get the notice of the dinner, please RSVP early. If we get more interest than the number of seats available, we do keep a wait list in the event of cancellations.

Grey Cells Matter – Mary-Anne Unwin [email protected]; 905-986-4078

Grey Cells Matter is a group that enjoys working on riddles, quizzes and word problems in order to keep our minds active and fit. It is non-competitive and no scores are kept. We meet the 2nd Monday of each month. The next meetings will be June 12th and July 10th. The venue may vary and a small fee (usually around $2/person) is required to cover the cost of photocopying etc. For more info contact the coordinator, Mary-Anne Unwin 905-986-4078 or [email protected]. New members welcome.

Jazz – Barbara Wooding [email protected]; 905 985 7369 As I'm writing this contribution for the May newsletter, the rain is beating down and making the outside world look dismal, making one feel quite depressed, knowing this rain is predicted for all weekend. However my daffodils and grape hyacinths make my gardens a delight. Last Monday in all the rain Mother and Father robin created a nest at the top of the yellow forsythia wreath at my front door. However by Wednesday they had abandoned it. The porch light is on 'til 1 AM and the coming and going of the household was too much for them I guess.

In the jazz world there's not much happening except FM on your radio dial. The Mike Murley Trio at Claremont United Church in April was a great listening pleasure. The trio blended so well and guest Guido Basso blended in well with the bunch. Nothing was loud and noisy, just pleasurable. They all enjoyed each other’s company.

Jester's Court has jazz every 2nd Sunday night. On May 21st Rudy Smith's Bebop Trio will be there. He plays the Steel {pans} drums with Kieran Overs on bass and Nancy Walker on piano. Gabriel Palatchi is coming on Saturday night June 3rd. Born in Argentina but studied piano in Cuba, he will knock your socks off!! Reserve early, $17.50 this session.

Please visit the Jazz table at intermission on Tuesday May 16th at the PROBUS meeting, third Tuesday in May. If any questions, please contact me at [email protected] or 905-985-7369 for more information regarding scheduled events.

Euchre Group – Ann Berube & Margaret Adamson [email protected]; 905-985-7102 (Afternoon group) [email protected]; 905-773-2878 (Evening group) The afternoon group has grown to a group of twelve, enjoying our games, laughs over luck, and socializing afterwards. And we would still welcome a few more players. Please contact Ann Berube ([email protected] or 905-985-7102) if you’re interested. The evening group is back to having most of its original 18 members. Hosting in our homes has worked out well with whatever numbers we get - divisors or 4 or not. So far, everyone has been able to set up the tables according to the members' confirmation emails. As a group, we have sorted out time for lively chats, socializing and card playing.

May 16th - Jim & Margaret Adamson (Address will be emailed) June 20th - Carol Kingsley & Fred Tierney

Beginners Bridge Group – Judy Anderson [email protected]; 905-985-8719

The beginners bridge group has spent the last several months learning the basics of this game based on the ACBL guidelines. Our group is made up of players who are new to the game and those returning after a few years who want to refresh themselves with the more current rules. We get together on a weekly basis at various members’ homes. It's a fun and relaxed group, and we do a shuffle and play format now that the basics have been learned. There's always lots of discussion at the table especially when the hands are more unusual. For anyone interested in taking a look at our group please feel free to get in touch with me.

Cards – Hand & Foot Group – Louise Bardswich [email protected]; 905-914-0677

The Hand and Foot group is seeking new members. Hand and Foot is a card game similar to Canasta. It’s very easy to learn. New members typically catch on after playing only one hand. While it is a simple game, it has enough variety within it to keep it interesting. It’s also a game that can be played with 2 to 6 players. That allows members to play weekly, whether or not the entire group is available. There are some members who show up every week, but others only come once a month, so the group is quite flexible. The group meets every Wednesday from 1:30 PM to approximately 4:00 PM. Meetings move around among members’ homes. For more information please contact the coordinator, Louise Bardswich, at [email protected] or 905-914-0677.

Lawn Bowling – Dennis Bayley [email protected]; 905-985-1342 An open house will be held on May 30th at 7.00 PM at Port Perry Lawn Bowling Club (Old Simcoe Rd . just north of Reach St ). PROBUS members interested in this activity will be welcome. They should wear shoes with no heels, e.g. sneakers. For more information please contact Dennis Bayley. Golf Group – Larry Inglis [email protected]

Dave Matthews, the Co-ordinator for the Golf Interest Group is taking a few months off to recover from an injury. In his absence, Larry Inglis has generously agreed to take over as interim Co-ordinator until Dave returns. Since this happened just as the season was starting, it may take a few weeks before the Golf group gets underway.

Music - Ukulele Group – Andy Stevenson [email protected]; 905-449-0719

The PROBUS Ukulele ABC's (Absolute Beginner Class) have finished their fall 10-week training program and enjoyed a performance of their skills at the November PROBUS meeting. Some members are now jamming with the DUKES, the Port Perry based Durham Ukulele Klub, also led by PROBUS member Andy Stevenson. Congratulations to everyone for your great achievements. We will review PROBUS members’ interest again in the Spring. Board Games – Jenny Yorgason and Bill Morrison [email protected] (905-986-5441); [email protected] or 905-439-0484. The Board Games Group has met 5 times since starting up in January, and usually meets on the first and third Thursdays of the month. The group typically has four to six members at each session held in the home of one of the group members. Among the games played so far have been Sequence and Mexican Train, and even players new to board games have found it quite fun learning the new games.

Other Interest Group News BOOK CLUB - The Book Club is going well. There is room for some new members if anyone wants to join. Give Suzanne Redford a call 416 579 0597. LUNCH MEET - The Lunch Meet interest group meets for lunch immediately following the general PROBUS members’ meeting each month. The location of the lunch that day will be announced at the meeting. For any questions please contact Tim Casey at [email protected] or 647-521-2565.

MUSIC JAM - The Music Jam Interest Group is still looking for a few more individuals who play instruments and would like to jam with some of their fellow PROBUS members. Please contact the Co-ordinator, Bill Walker, at [email protected] or 905-985-9673.

Our First Trivial Pursuit Contest

On April 20th, PROBUS Port Perry held its first pub Trivial Pursuit event. Earlier in the evening some members could be found dining in Jester’s Court main dining room.

Located on the upper floor of Jester’s Court, the 27 PROBUS members who attended the event were broken up into teams of 4. Couples and singles were all easily assigned to a team and table. And of course, in order to lubricate the brain cells a cash bar was available. Before starting the evening’s activities, the seven teams created their team name and then made their way to the food area where an assortment of delicious finger foods awaited.

Competition was fierce as the competitors were closely matched. In the end, three teams were victorious. Team “Dim Wittys” came in first place, followed by the “Three Amigos” and Team “Mensa’s.”
