From the Pastor’s Desk

In a world where online shopping has become the norm, I still love to go to bookstores. When I need to get away, I often head to do some real shopping at the Polaris Mall in Columbus. While there I almost always stop by Barnes and Noble to check out the best sellers on the market. I often get a cup of coffee and browse the history, religious and best selling fiction sections of the store. Now, I real-ize, that with the rise in online shopping, bookstores are now becoming a thing of the past. I don’t know what the future holds with some of these remaining bookstores. I appreciate the time that the person at the information desk devotes to assisting me when I ask about a particu-lar book that I am looking for that day. I enjoy finding it, reading it there, and then maybe sharing the text with someone who is sitting next to me in the café.

I am finding, too, that the churches are affected by the online culture. A couple months ago, I came across an in-teresting article in the New York Times Review. Statistics showed that more people are attending the “online church.” Many churches are now posting a live-stream of their worship services. With the increase in the use of in-ternet live-streaming, there has been a decrease in physi-cal attendance in many of our sanctuaries. The writer clearly stated her opinion on this matter. She acknowl-edged the effectiveness in reaching a larger audience, but at the same time, it diminishes the beauty and sacred-ness in relational community. The power in coming to church is connecting with people. I agree with her posi-tion. I find joy in connecting with all of you on Sundays. I get to worship and lead all of you in our sacred moment with God. I reconnect with each of you either through a momentary “hello” or a long conversation before or after worship. I can pause and listen. I listen to your prayer re-quests in the courtyard. I can say “amen” with all of you when we see the grace of God fully working in our com-munity.

I am a product of this technological generation. But, I recognize, too, that I must step away from a world confined in a little device to one where people interact with other people in a sacred community.

Graduation Sunday

On Sunday, June 2, we will recognize all those who are graduation high school or college. If you have a graduate to be recognized, please call the church office with the graduate’s name.

Thank You

On Saturday, April 6, we had a work / cleaning day at the church. We had a lot of people show up to clean and organize all the areas of the church. We carried 3 trailers of stuff out of the church. The trustee would like to thank everyone who came and helped with the day. Your participation is appreciated.

Healing hospitality

Repeated headlines about violence can make us “feel like locking our doors and never entering society again,” writes pastor and author Max Lucado. After another mass shooting, he penned an online opinion piece that urged people to do the exact opposite by opening their doors, their hearts and their circles. “It’s no accident that hospitality and hospital come from the same Latin word,” Lucado writes, “for they both lead to the same result: healing. When you open your door to someone, you are sending this message: ‘You matter.’” Because daily life is filled with rejections, extending an invitation — even to a simple meal — can be life-altering, Lucado contends. What you think is a messy house might be a sanctuary to someone else, “and to those who eat alone every night, pork and beans on paper plates tastes like filet mignon.” Our kitchen tables are “God’s secret weapons in the war on fear,” Lucado says. “We nev-er know what one meal will do.”

YOUth MATTERs Hello Walnut Grove Family,

We hope that you and your family had a wonderful Easter. We would like to say thank you for all your sup-

port you have shown our youth group these past few months. Between the popcorn fundraiser, silent auc-

tion fundraiser, and numerous donations we have been truly blessed. We had a great time this February at

the Winter Retreat, but as many already know, it was very expensive. We are going to have to fundraise

throughout this year in order to do this retreat again next year, plus a planned mission trip to the Appalachi-

an Mountains summer of 2020.

A review of our April:

-On April 7th the HCC went to Coliseum X laser tag facility in Delaware. This was awesome! We took 40 par-

ticipants and I can speak for everyone that this was very neat. We will be doing this again!

-On April 21st the WG Youth group put on the Sunrise Service. This is always a privilege and we thank you

for coming to show us support. Following the service we had our breakfast.

A few upcoming events for the youth group:

-Sunday, May 5th is the HCC senior night at Walnut grove from 5-7 pm. This will be a cookout. Those attend-

ing are asked to RSVP to Dylan by May 3rd. Each family needs to bring a side dish or dessert :)

-Sunday, May 19th is a regular scheduled meeting for the WG YF from 5-7 pm.

-Wednesday, June 19th (7:00 PM) to Saturday, June 22nd (9:00 PM) is the HCC Summer mission project at

Camp Common Grounds in Dunkirk.

-Sub Fundraiser will be Sunday, July 21st immediately following church services. More on this to come later.

The children had so much fun this year during our Palm Sunday lesson. We made Palm

“Sundaes” for the children to learn all about how Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a don-

key where people were there waving palms in celebration of Him. Shelby and Katie are

currently planning Vacation Bible School and upcoming activities for the children to be

involved in. More information to come.

-At some point this summer we are taking a group paint balling. Be looking out for flyers on this and let us

know if you are interested in going!

Again, thank you for all that you do to support us. As always, if you would like to know how/what you can

do to help us out and be a part of our youth's lives please talk to Dylan or Nathan. We have plenty of oppor-

tunities that you could help out with.

HN Food Pantry

We have seen an increase in the number of families using the pantry for March and April. Praise the Lord! On May 6

a representative of the pantry will give a short talk at a local 4H meeting on the pantry and how it works as directed by Christ to take care of those who were unable to do so.
