Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Grace and peace to you in the name of our loving God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit!

I find myself limiting my own access to the news. I find that to do otherwise is just an exercise in frustration and leads to great anxiety. I feel so much better just catching a brief snippet of the news in the morning, then another in the evening. Generally this gives me the information I need. Yes, our world is in a crisis and we all want to know what’s happening, but so much of what fills the airwaves throughout the day is just so much hype. Why? I’m guessing, because it sells. I also find myself limiting my exposure to all electronic social networking. I feel a little guilty about this. Why do I feel guilty? I feel guilty because this electronic networking is supposed to be the great savior in a time when we are to be physically distancing ourselves from one another. The internet is supposed to be helping us bridge the gap of isolation. It seems to me, that in some ways, it is doing this for some people. But, in other ways, it is simply broadening the gap. Why? I’m guessing that this is so, because while the internet gives so many people the opportunity to state their mind—which seems to be working well, it doesn’t hold anyone to a proper standard of listening, . . .and it doesn’t hold anyone to a proper standard of truth. I think too many of us just listen for what we want to hear from our version of the good guys, and from our version of the bad guys. Somehow the truth of the matter gets all muddied up in the exchange. It seems to me that everyone is looking for someone to blame. We all want to say, “It’s their fault.” Personally, I don’t think this is getting us anywhere. The fact is we are here, in crisis, and no amount of blaming is going to get the world out of it. So, what are we going to do about it? A number of years ago, astronaut Alan Bean wrote an article for Readers Digest magazine. In it he said:

“Test pilots have a litmus test for evaluating problems. When something goes wrong, they ask, ‘Is this thing still flying?’ If the answer is yes, then there's no immediate danger, no need to overreact. When Apollo 12 took off, the spacecraft was hit by lightning. The entire console began to glow with orange and red trouble lights. There was a temptation to ‘Do Something!’ But the pilots asked themselves, ‘Is this thing still flying in the right direction?’ The answer was yes--it was headed for the moon. They let the lights glow as they addressed the individual problems, and watched orange and red lights blink out, one by one. That's something to think about in any pressure situation. If your thing is still flying, think first, and then act.”

Lightning has struck our world in the form of a terrible virus. The lights are definitely flashing orange and red. But, it seems to me that our world is still flying. Another Readers Digest article, this one published in the 1990’s, had James Dobson sharing these rules for crisis management:

1) Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. 5) Don't get locked on a detail. 2) Look first, then act. 6) No matter how bad things get, be truthful. 3) When you do act, act aggressively. 7) Look for the silver lining. 4) Seek help.

We can hope for the best, but we really do need to prepare for the worst. If we don’t look to the well-being of all people, we all, in some ways, will suffer. “Our” wellbeing and “their” wellbeing are related. That was a big part of Jesus’ message in his earthly ministry. As much as the powers that are in this nation and in this world want to make it so, this is not about being Republican or Democrat, it’s not about being rich, middle-income, or poor. It’s not about which nation we call home or what gender we are, what color we are, or what gender orientation we have. It is about being a good neighbor like that Samaritan who took the risk and made the investment—not for a close friend or for a relative, but for a stranger, possibly even an enemy--because it was the right thing to do, because it was the loving thing to do. We need to look first. That means being far-sighted—not just focused on the short term. It also means listening—to both sides—and even more than that—to all sides. Seldom is life merely two-dimensional. When we act, we need to be onboard, even if the choice isn’t the one we, individually, would choose first. We need to support those servant leaders we have chosen to lead us. And they need to be open and honest. We need to seek help from all corners. We (whoever “we” may be) do not have a lock on intelligence and creativity. Sometimes the answers may come from the strangest places. That being said, we need to be mindful that not everything is going to work. There is no tried and true roadmap; none of us has ever been through this before. Let’s give ourselves and others some grace. When things do fail, we need to be honest about that--so that, together, we can seek better and more helpful ways. The silver lining seems to be that we are all, the whole world—in this together. We have each other, and together, we can manage this crisis; when we set the blame game aside and work together on a cure for the virus and an answer to the financial woes. No, it won’t be easy; no, it won’t be quick. Yes, it will be costly. But the alternative will be even more costly. God has given us each other for a reason. Together we can get it done. That is the silver lining. And even better than that, God hasn’t just given us each other, he has given us himself: “Behold,” said the risen Christ, “I am with you always, to the end of the age.” [Matthew 28:20b]

New Life Lutheran Church Unapproved Minutes

April 8th, 2020

At this time the Executive council has decided, for the safety of everyone due to COVID-19, not to hold a council meeting on April 8, 2020. The tentative plan is to push the meeting back to our scheduled meeting on May 13th, 2020. Should an emergency arise that needs our immediate attention we will hold a special meeting, please note, this meeting may be held via an online source depending on the circumstances of COVID-19.

Thank you for your patience and understanding dur-ing this time. We are looking forward to the day we can meet together in person again. Respectfully submitted,

Patrice Ziegler

Seniors we would like to recognize this year:

Ethan Curtis Jenna Fabre

Travis Maras Cade Sogge

Congratulations and God’s blessings on your future endeavors!!

Updates From the Office

At this moment we do not have any updates as to when in-church worship services and events will continue. The latest from Northwestern Minnesota Synod Bishop Bill Tesch is that the governor’s order runs through May 4th and any guidance after that date has not yet been issued. Given the current guidelines for the opening up of our economy, it would be wise for us to be prepared for the announcement that the order will be extended beyond May 4th. We will continue to monitor the governor’s orders and will communicate to the congregation when we will be able to resume face to face worship. We know that many of our members do not have access to the internet and are unable to get our online worship services posted via our website, Facebook page, or our YouTube channel. If any of you are in this category and would like to receive copies of the weekly worship services on a disc, to be played at your home with a DVD player, please call the church office and let us know so we can get those to you. We are also wondering if there is any interest in an evening Bible Study via the internet (zoom), if you are interested please give the office a call; if we aren’t available please leave a message that includes your name, contact information, and a window of days and times that you would prefer for such a study. We will do our best to choose a day and time that works for everyone’s schedule. During this time we have been working to clean and make repairs to the church in preparation for the day we can all be together in person again. Thanks to Tom Jenson, Tolly Tollefson, and several volunteers who have moved pews, refinished the sanctuary floor, polished pews, and done other work. We are in the process of getting the carpets cleaned as well. We are looking for anyone with experience that would be willing to volunteer their time to come and fill in a few cracks in the walls around the building. In addition, we are looking for someone to volunteer to wipe down and touch up paint on the walls throughout the building once those cracks have been filled. If you have a few extra minutes and would be willing to do so, please give us a call at the church office. We miss you all and are patiently, impatiently, waiting for the day we can all be reunited.

Praying for your health and safety,

Pastor Randy & Patrice

Introduction to the Daily 20 Questions

Whether we are younger or older, we have been asked to largely shelter in our homes. We are self-distancing ourselves from others in order to slow down and prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus. This, as we all are realizing, is a challenging task. By nature, we are social creatures in need of contact with others. Many folks are feeling very isolated and lonely because we are not able have that contact in the same way as before. On the other side of the coin, there are others who are experiencing overload as families are together way more than they have previously been used to. Overwhelmed and over stimulated, many feel in need of constructive ways to deal with this. Our “Daily 20 Questions” resources have been created to try to help you wherever you feel you are in this “new normal” environment. If you are home with a younger family and in need of finding some structure amidst the chaos, we invite you to utilize these “Daily 20 Questions” resources for a devotional time together in which you take time for caring con-versations. You might have to adjust the questions a bit to fit your context, but they are a starting point. If your family has “flown the coup,” so to speak, you and others are still in need of caring conversations. So, we invite you to make it a habit of calling or facetiming at least one friend or relative each day to have a conversation. If you have nothing else to talk about, feel free to use some of these questions to guide your conversation. If you are older and looking for better ways to fill your time, we invite you to pick out a few questions each day to answer with pen and paper. When all of this is over, collect your answers, wrap them up, and give them to your child(ren) or grandchild(ren) on a special occasion. What an incredible gif! I personally have a book with various questions in it that I gave to my father several years ago. While he grumbled about it at the time, he did answer a number of the questions. Now after his death, it is truly a keepsake. There are probably many other ways to use these questions. Please feel free to use them as you see fit. God bless your good conversations and ongoing relationships! If you enjoy these questions and would like more but are unable to access our church Facebook page or website, please call the church office and we will send out paper copies. Thanks much! Yours in Christ,

Pastor Randy

Applying Bible Principles A wise person once observed, “Half of any task is having the right tool, and the other half is knowing what to do

with it.” Although we don’t often consider it as such, money is a tool which God uses in our lives as a means of spiritual growth.

You see, money is not an end in and of itself. It is a means to an end. And in God’s hands, one of its primary “ends” is to instruct us and to help us grow spiritually. God especially wants us to avoid our natural tendency which is a bent toward selfishness, greed, and hoarding. That’s why the Lord Jesus said, “Take care! Be on your

guard against all kinds of greed; for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions” (Luke 12:15).

Well, if an individual’s life does not consist in having a lot of possessions, in what does it consist? Jesus provided an insightful answer to that question in Matthew 6:20-21, where he said, “ . . . store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Now, according to Jesus’ teaching in the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25), there is nothing wrong with saving. There is nothing wrong with investing or earning interest on investments. There is nothing wrong with being a wise steward by planning for the future. In fact, Jesus taught that those who do so are to be commended. But our primary emphasis as God’s children is to make our investments in the “Bank of Heaven.” When we do that, our investments are secure. They are not affected by inflation, by theft, by wear and tear, or anything of the kind.

There is only one way to make deposits in this special “bank”: By giving to the Lord’s work. Although the money is used here, it is credited to your eternal account. Each time you give your tithes and offerings at New Life, you are giving to the Lord by investing for eternity. You are storing up “treasures in heaven” that will glorify God forever.
