How small business owners can market their businesses According to Forbes magazine, more than 50 percent of the working

population works for a small business. Many small businesses are home-based and hundreds get started each month.

Despite their prevalence, only a handful of small businesses survive more than 10 years. Small business owners must learn how to proper-ly market their businesses and garner a larger audience to stay afloat. While there’s no set amount a business should devote to advertising and marketing, such expenses should be included in an organization’s oper-ational budget.

Small business owners just getting started may want to consider the following tips as they attempt to market their businesses and expand their customer base.

• Create an online presence. A survey from online marketing firm Yodle found that only about half of small businesses have websites. Cus-tomers routinely go online to learn more about businesses and make pur-chases. Customers will visit websites to find directions to brick-and-mor-tar stores, find store hours and/or learn about the products or services offered by a particular firm. Small business owners should establish an online presence and ensure the site is routinely updated and modernized.

• Sponsor local events. For a relatively small investment, small businesses can get their names out to the public by sponsoring community events. When approached by schools and other organizations, lend your help. Donate a basket of goods or a certificate for services for gift auc-tions. Work with organizations to donate a portion of sales to a charity or school through a specialized fundraiser. Contact a sports league to see if your company name can be printed on uniforms or used on banners around the field. Not only will this get your name out, but it also will es-tablish a positive image of your company.

• Establish yourself as an ‘expert.’ Be accessible to journalists and media outlets who may need quotes or insight when writing articles. Local papers and circulars can get your name out to the community and bring in new customers. Being quoted in print helps establish a reputation as being an authority in your field.

• Don’t ignore social media. Social media accounts are general-ly free to set up and require minimal effort to maintain. Social media can help establish and maintain a brand and help you share messages and other content.

JACKIE PEARASEThe Morning Star

She has been a police officer, consultant, lawyer and Splatsin chief but Gloria Morgan’s greatest pride comes from her volunteer work.

And her three-page CV reflects that, with her work and volunteer experience sharing equal space.

“Volunteering connects you to community, to people and to other organizations. It creates a global network around you,” Morgan explained.

With her extensive work histo-ry, Morgan could easily develop that network without volunteer-ing but it remains a vital part of who she is as a person.

“Wanting to serve is a big part of it. I get satisfaction that I’m

helping something move forward.”Morgan grew up with an

instinct for injustice that contin-ues to drive her.

She began honing her strong work ethic as a pre-teen working in orchards and adding several jobs to her resume before follow-ing through on her childhood dream by becoming an RCMP officer in 1979.

Morgan spent 11 years with the RCMP but began doing under-graduate studies at Fraser Valley College while still in the service, earning a spot on the Dean’s List for two years.

“I went to school because I just needed something to do but the goal became apparent quickly.”

Making a difference

Page 7: May 24, 2015

Women in Business Sunday, May 24, 2015 - The Morning Star Z7

That goal was to become a lawyer, which she accom-plished in 1994, being called to the bar the following year. Her time at UBC law school was not without extra curric-ular activities. She was part of the First Nations Law Students’ Association, the Law Students Legal Advice Program and First Nations Articling Committee, she produced a two-hour video on native justice, lectured on the Charlottetown Accord, made a presentation on policing natives at the Justice Institute and more.

Morgan’s law career included running her own practice, serv-ing as Crown prosecutor, circuit duty counsel and duty coun-sel and back to her own prac-tice before her life took another turn.

Nominated for Splatsin chief in 2001, Morgan asked her brother to remove her name from the list but he did not – “just to see what would happen” – and she was elected.

Morgan focused on financial stability for the band, creating opportunities for band mem-bers and giving the community a voice during her two terms as chief.

Left looking for work after losing a third election, Morgan once again turned her efforts to First Nations justice.

She worked as a consultant on Aboriginal issues before taking on outreach work around the Indian residential schools settle-ment as a regional coordinator. That job morphed into one as an adjudicator, which involves listening to Aboriginals’ resi-dential school experiences and determining if they are eligible for compensation.

“It was a great job but I’m working my way out of it,” she noted. “I have other dreams and goals but I am not sure exactly what they are right now.”

Morgan recently applied to be a provincial court judge but she is unsure if that is the right path

for her now. She continues to serve on the

Vernon Jubilee Hospital Board and the Interior Health Patient Care Review Board, is an avid golfer and enjoys focusing on First Nations issues – work and play she would not be able to

continue as a judge. One thing is certain, Morgan

will not be sitting still and she will be doing something that makes a difference.

“I want to leave the world a better place than when I came in,” she said.

The kitchen is the place to talk about what happened at school, chat with friends or share a midnight snack with someone special.

“The kitchen is the heart of the home and there are so many ways that people can make it be the place that suits their lifestyle and where they love to spend time. And it doesn’t have to cost a lot,” said Crystal Sturgeon, who is busy putting the finishing touches in the studio/showroom for her new busi-ness, CK Design Kitchen and Bath Cabinetry LTD.

“When I was younger, I was con-stantly rearranging my bedroom and painting and papering the walls.

I didn’t like school. I guess I was too artistic. Every teacher told me I was extremely talented if I would apply myself in arts and drama,” said the VSS 1997 grad. She moved to Calgary and started an accounting course with her mother’s encourage-ment because design did not seem to promise a steady career.

“I dropped out of accounting and got a degree in design from Mount Royal. My mother is proud of me now and she has a fabulous kitch-en,” said Sturgeon, who worked in Calgary as a designer for four years, then moved back to Vernon where she fell in love with the city again and with Dave Sturgeon who is now her husband and business partner in CK Design which started in 2005.

“I just couldn’t do this without my amazing husband and my family being there for me. I had a dream of owning my own design store. Here it is. I don’t think I could do it in a big city because there is a more relaxed atmosphere here. I can take my four-year-old son, Neil, my greatest mas-terpiece, to a job site if I need to and people are cool with it,” she said.

“I must have more than 100 kitch-ens in the community now and I love it when I meet people I’ve designed for around town and they tell me how much they enjoy their kitchens. It’s really exciting that people are taking more time to think about kitchens now, how kitchens can be function-al and beautiful. There is so much choice, whether it’s a new home or a renovation. And people are paying more attention to bathrooms now as well.”

CK Design helps people make choices by determining family needs and wishes, with abundant samples of materials and display kitchens. People can also see how their ideas look on 3-D computer programs. Sturgeon noted that people are get-ting more adventurous with kitchen design choices and taking a more European approach with colour and mix and match materials. The use of space and utensil and appliance organization and storage is met with ingenious new ideas like slide-out counters.

“Everything can be custom-tai-lored to your needs. I call it bespoke,

like a suit made just for you. And you can have all the extras with-out spending a lot. Sometimes all it takes to make the change you want is something small, a change of hard-ware, a colour or an accessory,” said Sturgeon.

“Botox is not just for your face. A little injection of something new can smooth out your kitchen, too.”

She’s excited showing off the show-room where one kitchen display will be dedicated to baking cookies and pies to serve when customers drop in for coffee and a chat, or just to get some new ideas.

CK Design is involved with a company that plants trees around the province on behalf of businesses. Since each kitchen uses approximate-ly two trees, these are now being replanted annually. The business uses only environmentally friendly prod-ucts with most materials Canadian of British Columbia made. The show-room will soon have a line of acces-sories, some designed and made in Vancouver.

“I wake up every day and feel I’m blessed to work where my passion is. I don’t feel I’ve really worked a day in my life because I love it all so much. This is my playground. I have six wonderful employees and each one of them is creative and dedicated and loves their job.”

Sturgeon’s passion and creativi-ty won a Tommie Award from the Canadian Homebuilders’ Association in 2014.

(NC) Size doesn’t matter when it comes to your business and cyber security.

There have been a number of high-profile reports in the news recent-ly about large corporations, retailers and celebrities falling victim to online data breaches. In the case of certain retailers, hackers gained access to their customers’ personal information, like credit card data.

What do these large corporations and your small business have in common? Both could be targeted by cyber criminals. In fact, accord-ing to a recent Symantec Internet Security report, the largest growth area for targeted cyber attacks was businesses with fewer than 250 employees.N EDUCATION IS THE FIRST STEP

The most important first step to avoid a cyber attack is educating yourself and your employees. Small businesses should familiarize themselves with cyber threats such as viruses, worms, trojans, botnets, and other malware.

Since cyber threats – such as viruses – can often come in through your email, strong email security practices are your business’s first line of defence.N STRONG EMAIL SECURITY

Here are six things you can do to improve your business’s email security:

Local Businesses are not immune to cyber threats

Dionne Loewen Finance Manager

Dionne grew up with a family in the automotive business and started her own career on the Lower Mainland in 2001. She went from sales to finance in 2007, and after 3 years of being a stay-at-home mom to her son Daniel, she joined the team at Vernon Kia as the Financial Services Manager. She joined Kia because of their excellent reputation for both performance and value, and the way Kia has quickly established itself as a top international auto company in a short time period.

Dionne specializes in the sub-prime auto finance market. She enjoys helping credit challenged families who have suffered financial hardships and set-backs due to the recent economy. “ I advocate for the consumer and present a personalized case to the lenders on an individual basis. I promote everyone’s personal story and circumstances beyond the conventional and rigid credit application process. I believe that in our country, everyone deserves to have access to safe, reliable transportation, regardless of credit history”.

Dionne’s passions are her son Daniel, fitness, snowboarding, travel and enjoying the local arts & music scene. She has also just recently developed a love for golf & mixed slow pitch.

JACKIE PEARASEThe Morning Star

Melanie King’s recipe to business success is one she has refined over the years.

Being successful for King has involved a little luck, some tough choices, considerable hard work and a lot of love for that work.

“Do something that you really love with people you really love and it’s never work,” said the owner/operator of Mel’s Pizza in downtown Enderby.

Pizza sauce seems to run in King’s blood. She started as a phone girl at Frieda’s Pizza in Quesnel at the age of 14 and stayed for 10 years before opening her own Italian restaurant. A failed marriage led to a failed busi-ness and a move to Fort McMurray, where she earned her real estate licence.

She continued in real estate when she moved to Enderby with her son James in 2005 but an enticing offer on a local pizza place led her back to the restaurant business in 2007.

King bought the place and became her own boss within a week.

Enlisting her son’s help, she opened up and, flying by the seat of her pants, slowly built up a customer base.

A trip to Pizza Expo 2008 and a

Dough Doctor workshop improved her product while some free and bargain priced pizzas for a ladies’ ball tournament sealed her presence in the community.

“What better way to get your business known than through the moms? It was the cheapest and most effective advertising I ever did.”

The business took off again when King bought a building up the street and opened a new place under her own name in 2011. She works 12-14 hour days but she thoroughly loves cooking for people and she has built up a dedicated staff of six. In February, her business earned the Best Workplace Award from Small Business BC.

King said entrepreneurs must have a tough skin while still being responsive to customers’ concerns.

“I take things personally but I don’t let it drive me,” she noted. “I run my business, my business does not run me”. She has great pride in her product, always tweaking the menu – adding and subtracting as needed. A recent trip to Pizza Expo (which allowed her to reno-vate during a short closure) has her exploring gourmet pizza options.

She is a true believer in shopping local because it benefits the local economy is so many ways.

“One hundred per cent I recom-mend local suppliers, local product. The service is top-notch. They’ve saved me thousands over the years,” she said. “Businesses within a com-munity have to work together and make plans together. If you work together, you have stronger business-es and a stronger community.”

In recent years, she has been chamber president, served on a revi-talization committee and made 2,000 sandwiches from scratch (with staff) for Dan Botkin’s funeral She con-tinues to serve on the credit union board and sponsors and supports the

local fire department. Too much volunteer work was

leading to burnout and King knew she had to cut back; she now limits herself to donating her product.

“You might not be able to get out to volunteer but you can give as much as you can without going broke.”

Business is rising like her pizza dough – 400 per cent since 2007 – and King sees Mel’s Pizza as an Enderby fixture for many years to come.

“(Long-time employee) Brittany (Neville) and James get it in my will,” she said.

T hough things have improved in the last few years, recent college graduates still face an uphill battle when beginning their professional careers. Standing out in a crowded pool of

applicants isn’t easy, but first-time job seekers must find a way to do just that.

But preparing for a professional career begins long before men and women send out their first resumes. The following are a few steps first-time job seekers can take to ensure their transition from student to professional goes as smoothly as possible.• Clean up your online presence.

College is a carefree time for many students, but those fun times should not come to define your online presence. When preparing to enter the workforce, scrub your social media presence clean of any-thing that does not present you in a mature and positive light. Fair or unfair, photos from nights out on the town in college can damage your reputation and prevent hiring managers from considering your resume. Clean social media profiles of any information, be it pho-tos, blog postings or musings on Twitter, that may leave companies questioning your judgment and maturity level, and think twice before posting any such information in the future.• Clean up your physical presence.

Shoulder-length hair and a scruffy beard might have projected your desired image on campus, but such an image will rarely score you points in the business world. First impressions go a long way, and appearance can make or break a first impression. Even if a more conservative look is not your personal style, it’s the style many companies prefer. Men should project a polished look, including a nice suit, while women should wear appropriate office attire and avoid going overboard with makeup and jewelry.• Do your homework.

Just because college has ended doesn’t mean first-time job seekers no longer have homework. Research the industry you want to work in, staying abreast of the latest developments and predictions as to where the industry is going and which companies figure to be lead-ing the industry in the coming years.

Research also should involve learning about companies you want to work for, and that research should be kicked into overdrive if

First time job seekers

and when you are granted a job interview. Hiring managers will be more impressed by candidates who demonstrate a knowledge of the industry and their companies than they would be a candidate with a high GPA but little industry knowledge.• Work free.

Lounging around Mom and Dad’s house waiting for the phone to ring won’t stand out on a resume. If job offers are scarce, consider working free, offering your services to companies in your industry free of charge in an attempt to get your foot in the door. This may mean applying for an unpaid internship or simply writing hiring managers at certain companies and offering to come in a few days each week to get a feel for the industry and help in any way you can. Many professionals began their careers working for no money. This can ingratiate first-time job seekers with companies while pro-viding them valuable experience that can help them stand out in a crowded pool of applicants.

Once college has ended, first-time job seekers can employ several strategies to improve their chances of

landing their first jobs.

CARA BRADYThe Morning Star

One of the pleasures of travelling is recreating favourite food at home. While that can be difficult, those who like it hot can find authentic Mexican ingredients at El Gusto Latino Market in Vernon.

Fanny Chapman, who started the business in 2013, grew up helping cook in her family’s restaurant in Acapulco.

“My father is a Swiss Canadian who came to Mexico on holidays and met and married my mother and stayed to start a business. He combined European dishes for European tour-ists with Mexican food and we’d have things like wiener schnitzel with salsa, and of course, tamales, enchiladas, tacos and ceviche,” she said.

In 1993, another Canadian, Steve Chapman, was on holidays in Mexico and found a lovely Mexican bride.

“History repeated but this time it took me away,” said Chapman.

Away was to Dease Lake in north-ern B.C., where her husband worked for BC Hydro.

“It was a very big change and a big challenge, beautiful and interest-ing. My dad told me that was the real Canada,” said Chapman, who was busy learning English and working as a cashier. Work took the couple around the province and they moved to Vernon in 2010.

“I said, ‘We’re staying here.’ I had

wanted to open a store for the longest time but we were always moving,” said Chapman.

She opened El Gusto Latino Market and found her customers in Mexican seasonal workers who wanted home food and Canadians who wanted what they had eaten in Mexico. Some of her products are imported directly from Mexico while others, like tortillas and cheese, are from Lower Mainland sup-pliers so they are fresh. Chapman does whatever it takes to get her products on the shelves. Products are often delivered to her but she has been known to drive a round trip to the Coast in one day to get what she needs.

The store is stocked with ingredi-ents to cook Mexican from scratch — queso Oaxaca, chorizo, epazote, nopalitas, cane sugar, corn husks for tamales, and sauces like mole, habanero and the popular valentina sauce which is used on everything in Mexico. There is a whole rack of every kind of dried pepper, with something for all tastes.

The Mexican workers especial-ly like the Sangria Señorial, a soft drink made with sugar cane, and the Mexican Coke in a bottle. The spice Mexican candy is also popular.

And then there’s the Mexican choc-olate. Chapman’s Ibarra hot choco-late was voted the best in the Hot Chocolate competition that was part of the Downtown Vernon holiday cel-ebrations last November.

OVER 20 CLASSES A

WEEK!

Chapman likes to mark Mexican holidays as well and recently had a Cinco de Mayo food stand at the store to the delight of customers. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the 1862 Mexican victory over a much larger French invading force.

El Gusto Latino is decorated with the colourful cut paper banners, used in different colours and designs for Mexican celebrations from national holidays to weddings and Dia de los Muertos. She also stocks Mexican pottery, paintings, tortilla warmers, small figurines and handmade tradi-tional blouses.

She helps the Mexican seasonal workers with money transfers, tarje-tas de larga distancia, and otros servi-cios as needed.

Customers love the free cooking classes held every Saturday at noon (except on long weekends or other special occasions).

“People tell me how much they enjoy it and I like to share my knowl-edge,” said Chapman.

“Of course, I have the juggling that every working mother has to do. I put my family, Fanny, 10, and Bobby, eight, first, and close the store Monday to Friday for an hour from 2:30 to 3:30 to pick them up from school. I have had a wonder-ful response to the store and want to keep on bringing in familiar and new products so people can learn about wonderful Mexican cooking and something about traditions, too, if they want.”

Hala turns hat trick in National Image Salon

The 2015 National Image Salon of the Professional Photographers of Canada was exhibited recent-ly during the Canadian Imaging Conference, the annual confer-ence of the PPOC in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

Brenda Hala MPA F/PPOC-BC, a professional photographer from Vernon had 3 images accepted and exhibited in the National Image Salon, judged prior to the con-ference by a panel of master pho-tographers from across Canada. Acceptance into the salon is an indication of the makers’ ability to produce outstanding images for their clientele. It also earns the maker merits toward several des-ignations offered to PPOC mem-

bers, including the prestigious Craftsman of Photographic Arts and Master of Photographic Arts.

The competition features entries from across Canada in twenty-one different classes, including press, portrait, archi-tecture and fashion.

Kent Wong, Chair of the National Exhibition Committee, said: “We were thrilled to see so many inspiring entries in the competition this year. The salon images clearly demonstrate the exceptional skill and quality that professionals bring to the medi-um of photography.”

Leanne TophamCelebrating 26 years of solving the learning riddle. Since 1989, Potentials Learning Centre for Vernon and area has been helping students solve that riddle successfully. Students who are years behind in reading, math, and/or spelling catch up and go on to excel at school. This unique program, directed by Ms. Leanne Topham, a specialized learning therapist, has helped students who have suspected or diagnosed learning disabilities (like dyslexia) to overcome their challenges. At Potentials Learning Centre,

the biggest reward is to see a student finally ‘get it’, and see the difference that also makes in his or her confidence and self-esteem.

The responsibility of raising a family while maintaining a career is never easy. Working moms often wish there were more time in the day to spend with their families or get

more done at the office. While there’s no way women can add a 25th hour to their days, there are ways to manage your time more effec-tively so you can get around to doing those things you never seem to have the time to do.• Get a head start. Perhaps no time of day is more hectic

for a working mother than the morning, when she must get ready for work while getting the kids ready for school and ensuring they have a good breakfast. Some moms even drop their youngsters off at school. That’s a lot of tasks to tackle before you even sit down in your office to answer the first e-mail or listen to the morning’s first voicemail. To make mornings less frantic, get a head start the night before by laying out the next day’s clothes for you and encouraging your kids to do the same. Preparing lunches, packing a gym bag and even setting the coffee maker can all be done the night before to save you time and make mornings more relaxing.• Take public transportation to work. Public trans-

portation may not be available to all working mothers, but those with access to a train, subway or bus might want to take advantage of that opportunity. If you do, you can spend your daily commute catching up with work instead of sitting in traffic behind the wheel of your car. Even if public transportation takes a little more time to get you to work than driving yourself, that extra time can be spent preparing for the day ahead.• Catch up on work over the weekend. The week-

ends are a time when many working mothers look to unwind, but spending an hour or two catching up on work on a Saturday or Sunday morning is a great way to make the week a little less hectic. As the week progresses toward the weekend, set aside certain tasks that aren’t urgent but can be easily addressed in an hour or so over the weekend. This frees up time during the week to tackle larger projects and might even allow you to leave your office earlier on weekdays.

• Prepare or even cook meals in advance. The days of yore when mom cooked all the meals are largely a thing of the past, as nowadays both parents tend to share cooking duties. Moms can cut down on the time it takes to serve up family meals on weeknights by cooking meals in advance. Think of dishes you can prepare on the weekends and then freeze until you’re ready to serve. Or purchase a slow cooker that slowly cooks your meal all day while you’re out and about. By the time you and your family arrive home at night, dinner will be ready and you will have more time to relax after a long day.• Share the work. Sharing your workload pertains to both

home and the office. At home, don’t feel like you have to be a su-perhero capable of handling all of the household tasks like cooking, cleaning and walking the dog on your own. Share these responsi-bilities with your spouse and even your children when they’re old enough. At the office, don’t be afraid to delegate tasks to your co-workers or ask for favors from coworkers who might be able to help.

Managing time effectively is of paramount importance for working mothers. Learning to do so effectively can make for a better personal as well as professional life.

Effective time management can help working moms better handle the tall task of juggling a family and a successful career.

B udgeting is important for businesses big and small. But while corporations or

larger organizations might be able to stretch their budgets when nec-essary, small businesses often don’t have the luxury of such leeway.

Because small businesses are often less financially flexible than their larger competitors and coun-terparts, small business owners tend to agonize over their budgets when starting out. Part of that struggle may stem from small business owners who specialize in their trade but have little experience at running a business. But determining a small business budget is essential to a business’ success, as it helps owners determine if they have enough mon-ey to fund the business and its poten-tial expansion while also providing owners with a steady income.

Each industry is different, and budgets that work for one business will not necessarily work for another. But the following tips can help busi-ness owners develop an effective budget for their businesses regard-less of their industries.UNDERSTAND YOUR INDUSTRY

Understanding your industry and knowing your product are two

different things. When establishing a budget for a new business, small business owners should familiarize themselves with the industry they will be joining. Calculate the cost of machinery and materials. The prices of materials can fluctuate depend-ing on supply and demand, but small business owners developing a budget can research how such costs fluctuated in the past or speak with current business owners to determine how much of their initial cash supply and future revenue will need to be allocated to production costs.

Another thing to learn about the industry is if there are certain trends that may dictate your revenue stream. For example, a surf shop likely won’t bring in as much rev-enue in the winter as it will in the summertime. Such trends are not ex-clusive to seasonal businesses, and business owners need to take them into consideration when developing a budget for their businesses. Doing so will help you stay afloat during those times of year when your industry traditionally struggles. If you fail to do so, you may be forced to lay off workers, close your doors or both.KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR REVENUE

Developing a Small Business Budget

Page 23: May 24, 2015

Women in Business Sunday, May 24, 2015 - The Morning Star Z23

Developing a budget for a start-up can be tricky, as it’s hard to know how to allocate your revenue when you don’t know how much revenue your business is going to generate. But that doesn’t mean you can’t allocate that yet-to-be-earned revenue. In fact, doing just that is entirely necessary. Determining your operating costs, which include cost of materials, labor, the rent or mortgage on the property where your business is housed and taxes among other expenses, helps you know how much revenue you’ll need to generate to make the business work. Knowing the percentage of revenue that needs to go toward your operating costs can help you develop a realistic budget that gets you through the first few months when it’s hard to determine just how much revenue the business is likely to generate.* Give your-self some breathing room. When developing a budget for your small business, it’s important to build some breathing room into that budget. This can provide some leeway should your estimated revenue fall short of your actual revenue or your business takes off and you suddenly find yourself

in need of money in order to meet customer demand and/or expand the business and its staff. In addition, factoring in some breathing room will come in handy should costs beyond your control, such as rent or the cost of materials, suddenly rise. DEVELOP A SECONDARY EMERGENCY BUDGET

Figures regarding the survival rates of new small businesses vary signifi-cantly. Conventional wisdom has long suggested such businesses fail far more often than they succeed, and many go up in flames rather quickly. However, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, roughly half of all new businesses survive five years or more, and about one-third survive a decade or more. But surviving five years is not necessarily a 50-50 proposition, as small business owners who plan ahead for emergencies are likely in better positions to make it to 10 years than those that don’t. When developing a secondary emergency budget, include cost-cutting measures, which can make it easier to make tough decisions if money becomes tight but bills still need to be paid. Adversity is to be expected, so having

a plan in place should you need to make changes makes it easier to manage that adversity.REVIEW THE BUDGET REGULARLY

Once the business has opened, owners should review their budgets to determine if money is being spent as wisely as possible. You may have overestimated certain costs,

which can free up money to grow the business. Larger businesses can afford to establish yearly budgets because they have more financial flexibility. But small businesses are more vulnerable to volatile markets or unexpected costs, so small business owners should review their budgets more frequently and make changes they feel are necessary.

Balancing work and family is a juggling act faced by many working parents. Responsibilities to work and family often overlap, and that can make solving the riddle of balancing work and family that much more difficult.

Single-income households have decreased dramatically over the last several decades, as escalating costs of living have made it difficult for many families to get by on just one income. But working parents can employ several strategies, both at the office and at home, as they attempt to make the job of juggling commitments to work and family a little less difficult.

AROUND THE OFFICEA major concern many parents have as they attempt to balance

work and family is that they are not spending enough time at home with their children or not paying enough attention to their kids or even their spouses when they are home. One way to find more time at home is to inquire about the possibility of working remotely.

Advancements in technology that have made it easier to remotely communicate with clients and coworkers has led to an influx of work-from-home employees. While working from home does not mean work-loads will diminish, it does save men and women the time they would spend commuting to and from work, and that translates to more time at home with the family. If working remotely full-time is not a possibility, men and women can ask if it’s possible to do so one or two days a week, as such a schedule will still provide more time at home.

Another avenue men and women can explore as they attempt to achieve a better balance between work and family concerns how efficiently they do their jobs. Chatting with coworkers about issues that do not pertain to work can be a great way to reduce work-related stress, but professionals who feel as if they never have enough time to get their jobs done in a typical work day should determine if they are working as efficiently as possible.Avoid too much water cooler chitchat and resist the temptation to check personal emails or text messages while at work.

Such distractions can eat up a considerable amount of time over the course of a workday, making it harder for men and women to get their jobs done in a typical workday and forcing them to stay late or bring work home.

Men and women working to achieve a greater balance between work and family also can examine how willing they are to take on additional work. While coworkers love a team player willing to pitch in, routinely accepting extra work can drastically cut into the time men and women have to do their own jobs as well as the time they have to spend with their families. Helping coworkers out in a pinch is fine, but men and women should resist any urges to take on more than they can reasonably handle.

AT HOMEMen and women also can take steps at home to create a better

balance between work and family. Working parents who want the time they have with their children each night to be more substantive can turn off their devices upon arriving home from work. Devices such as smartphones and tablets keep working professionals at-tached to their offices, and many men and women are tempted to check work emails or answer phone calls and voicemails even when they have left the office for the day. Parents should resist that tempta-tion so their families know their focus is on them and not back at the office.

Another way to create a greater balance between work and family life is to make more efficient use of time at home. For example, rather than spending an hour each night making dinner, working parents can use a slow cooker so family meals are ready the moment every-one arrives home at night. That frees up time the family can spend together and gives working parents one less thing to do when they arrive home.

Working parents looking get more quality time with their families also can cut back on the time families spend watching television each night. Limit television time to an hour or two each night, using the extra time to connect with one another.

Many working parents strive to create a greater balance between work and family. While doing so is not always easy, men and wom-en can employ strategies at work and at home to make the challenge a little less complicated.

The Morning Star is very fortunate to have a team of hard-working professional women. They bring an energetic and dynamic approach to the award-winning newspaper’s efforts to offer excellence in customer service, and a community newspaper we are all very proud of.

A Salute to the Women at The Morning Star

Networking plays an integral role in professional growth. Men and women who can nurture relationships within their fields are more likely to be in tune with what’s going on in their professions, and a network of fellow professionals can help men and women advance their careers.

But networking often falls by the wayside for today’s busy pro-fessionals, many of whom simply can’t find the time in their hectic schedules to foster relationships with professional colleagues. But the benefits of networking are numerous, and it behooves men and women to make an effort to build and maintain strong professional networks.

• Recognize the benefits of networking Networking not only benefits individuals but also the companies

those individuals own or work for. While many people view net-working as a means to one day finding a new job, networking is much more than that. When you foster a professional relationship, the other person in that relationship will be quick to think of you when they need a given service or are asked for a referral. That can benefit business owners’ bottom lines, but even men and wom-en who don’t own a business can benefit, as their bosses will no doubt recognize the role they played in bringing in new business.

• Make networking a priorityOnce professionals recognize that networking is about more

than just building a web of contacts who can help them find their next job, they can begin to prioritize networking so it can help them in their existing jobs. Make an effort to keep in touch with current and previous clients and any other contacts made over the years. Something as simple as an email to catch up or an inquiry to see if there’s anything fellow professionals need will help you stay on their minds, which can help you bring in new business or learn about new opportunities down the road. Maintaining and building a professional network does not always require a lot of work, as even seemingly small gestures can pay big dividends if men and women prioritize such efforts.

Excellence in customer service is Diana’s passion. She wanted to create a beautiful store that would make her customers feel important; getting that little extra care and attention. Diana wanted that small town atmosphere where you know your customers by name. With a vision in her head, Diana worked hard for two months and the inspiration came to life. She knew she did the store justice when her friend Jackie cried when she first saw the store.Diana’s motto for customers is “if you don`t love it, don`t buy it”. She wanted the highest quality of goods for each price point and she stocks Canadian made products because they are the standard to follow. Why not have quality instead of quantity? • Revisit your network from time to time A network is only beneficial if it remains current. Keep track of the professionals in your network so you know when and where to reach them should you need to do so. A professional networking site such as LinkedIn is a great way to stay on top of what your network is up to, and such a site also is a valuable tool when you want to update your network with any new information about your-self. Revisit your network a few times each year, updating with any new information so you aren’t left scrambling for email addresses or phone numbers when the time comes to get back in touch with your contacts.

• Avoid networking only when you need something

You can likely name a few of your fellow professionals who only seem to contact you when they want something. You don’t want to earn a similar reputation among your own contacts, so don’t forget to make periodic contact with your colleagues even when you don’t need anything. A simple email to catch up and to offer some un-solicited help if any is needed can be enough to prevent you from earning a reputation as a me-first contact and put you in a positive light that can benefit you throughout your career.

Networking can easily be seen in a negative light. But profession-als who network the right way will find that their efforts pay divi-dends for themselves, their companies and even their professional colleagues.

When done correctly, networking can benefit businesses, their employees and even those employees’ contacts.

Productivity is paramount to a company’s success. A productive staff tends to meet or even exceed its goals, strengthening a company along the way. As a result, business owners often find themselves looking for ways to increase productivity, which could be lagging for a number of reasons.

Though lack of morale is often assumed to be the reason behind a lack of productivity among staff, such an assumption is not always accu-rate. Poor productivity might be a byproduct of the office environment, which could be suffering. The following are a handful of steps business owners concerned about staff productivity can take to address those concerns and get their organizations back on the right track.

* Upgrade hardware Thanks to the prevalence of technology, men and women have grown

accustomed to getting what they need and want a lot faster than the days of yore. For example, the social networking tool Twitter has revolution-ized the way many people get their news. Top stories are now broken on Twitter, which has the ability to instantly share newsworthy items that once were relegated to nightly news broadcasts or morning news-papers. Many people have grown accustomed to that immediacy, so a lack of immediacy can be frustrating. Business owners should keep that in mind when examining their hardware. Older computers, for example, are considerably slower than newer models, and older machinery can compromise productivity and frustrate employees. Upgrading employee hardware can help business owners improve efficiency and productivity and make for a happier, less frustrated workforce.

* Look into lighting Lighting can have a significant impact on employee productivity. Ad-

equate lighting helps employees stay alert throughout the workday, while

Routine staff meetings in which employees are encouraged to offer their input on work flow can help improve productivity.

poor lighting can cause fatigue as the day progresses. If the office is dimly lit, upgrade lighting fixtures, even installing more fixtures in areas that are especially dark.

* Help employees hone their skills Employees who feel as though they have reached a plateau and oppor-

tunities to advance their careers have all but dried up are less likely to be productive than those who feel they can continue to move up within a company. In such instances, employee morale needs to be addressed, even if there are no immediate promotions to be had. Business owners may im-prove that morale by helping employees hone their skills, be it paying for coursework that allows them to improve existing skills or sending them to seminars where they can learn more about their field. Such efforts are relatively inexpensive investments for employers, but they show employ-ees that their companies are willing to invest in them. Such gestures can improve morale and productivity.

* Set targets and follow up on them A sleepy office environment or low employee morale are not always

behind lower productivity. In some instances, employees simply need to have goals set for them in order to improve their productivity. Goals should be realistic but not too simple to achieve, as poorly set goals can give employees the wrong impression. When tasked with meeting easy targets, some employees may think their employer does not have much confidence in their abilities, while others may embrace easy goals and use them as an excuse to be unproductive. So while goals should be realistic, they also should inspire employees to do their best. Once targets have been established, don’t forget to follow up and ensure progress is being made. Setting targets but failing to follow up on employee progress can produce an environment in which employees feel as though their efforts are not valued.

* Encourage employee input Determining why productivity is sagging is not always so easy. But

many times employees themselves are a business’ best resource with re-gard to identifying why things have taken a turn for the worse. Business owners can create an environment in which employees know their input is valued. If necessary, instruct department managers to conduct monthly meetings with staff to address issues such as work flow, teamwork and re-sponsibility. During these meetings, which can be valuable during periods of low or even exceptional productivity, managers can solicit suggestions from employees about improving productivity and efficiency.

As technology continues to evolve, devices are being used in ways that might have seemed impossible as recent-ly as a couple of years ago.

Several industries have be-gun to institute changes that reflect the population’s grow-ing reliance on technology. Many airlines now offer WiFi service for passengers, and retailers have worked with vendors to provide mobile applications that facilitate buying via smartphones and tablets.

Many feel the future of technology will revolve around merging the real and virtual worlds. Over the next 12 months, the following technologies figure to gain more steam.• ON-DEMAND COMPUTING

Reliance on desktop and laptop computers continues to dwindle as tablets and smart-phones grow in popularity. The Pew Research Center reports that 58 percent of Americans have a smart-phone, while 42 percent own a tablet. These gadgets allow for immediate connectivity for gaming and streaming televi-sion and video.• MOBILE CONSUMERISM Retailers are continually re-vising their offerings to con-sumers in an effort to cater to mobile users. Many business-es now boast websites that are optimized for tablet use, while others have developed apps that work in conjunction with traditional websites or as stand-alone services.

• 3D PRINTING Consumer analysts say 3D

printing will reach a tipping point in the next several

years. As the demand for 3D printing increases, the cost of 3D printing devices will fall and make them even more accessible to the mass-es. For those unfamiliar with 3D printing, the technology allows a user to make a 3D manipulated object from a digital file. The printer lays down successive levels of material, usually a polymer plastic, to form the end prod-uct. Reproducing a digital file via 3D printing can take any-where from minutes to days. • ENERGY MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS

Analysts expect companies to place a greater emphasis on energy management in coming years as a means of reducing energy consump-tion.• CLOUD COMPUTING

Cloud computing involves large groups of remote serv-ers networked together to allow centralized data stor-age. Instead of data saved to a hard disk or drive in a home or business, it is stored to a drive that runs through the Internet. People may be surprised at just how much data actually is stored in the cloud. It’s what enables a user to access a file from work at home or finish play-ing a game that began on a computer or a mobile phone. Businesses are increasingly bypassing internal servers and software in favor of cloud-based options. The cloud is prolific, but it still is expected to grow more.• THE INTERNET OF THINGS (IOT)

What to expect in technology this year

Telecommuting has made great strides over the last de-cade. As more people work from home, more people need to nd ways to be productive outside of the of ce environment. That pro-ductivity may hinge on avoiding distractions.

Many people telecommute in an attempt to make their lives

easier and more affordable. Working from home carries with it a number of bene ts, but also quite a few challenges. Some people who work from home nd it more dif cult to separate work life from home life, and distractions in the latter can sabotage the former. Recogniz-ing your biggest distractions

and remedying them can lead to more productivity and better job performance.

ChildrenOne of the more popular

reasons employees work from home is to be more available for child care. Telecommuting gives working parents a schedule that is exible enough to meet work deadlines while also being able to pick the kids up from school or to attend school-related functions and extracurricular activities. Telecommuting also allows new mothers to nurse longer or stay home with infants for a longer period of time.

However, the same reasons people work from home also can prove to be the biggest distrac-tions. Imagine being several paragraphs into a report when the baby wakes up from a nap and demands to be fed. Confer-ence calls can be disrupted by a child who needs homework help or a toddler who needs the

channel changed on the televi-sion. Some trial and error may be required to develop a system in which you can work effective-ly and be able to pull away to handle child-related issues.

Social mediaSocial media connects people

to the world around them. Smart-phones and tablets enable peo-ple to check their email, update their status and tweet messages at a moment’s notice. Working from home affords unrestricted access to social media sites and other forms of communication that may not be so readily ac-cessible in a traditional working environment. It can be tempting for you to constantly click over to Instagram or LinkedIn during the day. However, telecommuters should set speci c times of the day when they use social media and restrict usage to only these times. This way they can more fully immerse themselves in work.

I have been involved with dogs since I was a young girl at the age of 12 when my father and I bred Irish Setters. I learned to groom in Saskatoon under the guidance of Beth Hardy, which was two years of learning and hard work but well worth it. We have bred

and shown purebred registered Shih Tzu dogs for over 16 years and I am a life member of the Canadian Kennel and Vernon Kennel Clubs. Our goal is to continue our great service. I, along with husband Stewart, care for our clients and their beloved pets!

I love my career. I groom for the love of dogs.

This may involve shutting off instant messaging services or logging off personal email until the workday is through.

Friendly interruptionsFriends and family members

may not understand that telecom-muting is the same as working. Phone calls or texts answered at all hours of the day can be distracting. Working from home does not give friends or fami-ly unlimited access to you, so discourage unexpected visits or phone calls. Others should under-stand that they must respect your work hours, whether those hours are being spent at home or in an office.

Dedicated workspaceIt can be difficult to take

telecommuting seriously if your work area is a folding table and a laptop stuck in the corner of the living room. Others in the house-hold may infringe on your work-space, and daily life can produce many distractions. It is best to have an area specifically dedicat-ed to work, and this area should be closed off to others who won’t need you during the day (chil-dren should be able to reach you in case of emergency). Your work desk shouldn’t be a place that the children do their homework.

Try to set up your desk in an area that doesn’t get much foot traffic or inspire you to day-dream. If you are close to a tele-

vision or facing an open window, you may spend too many hours gazing aimlessly instead of fo-cused on the tasks at hand. Very often you can be your own worst enemy when it comes to distrac-tions. Buckling down and paying attention requires effort.

Know your limitsTaking breaks from time to time

can quell boredom and refresh your level of concentration. Periodically step away from your desk to grab a snack or drink, just like you would at the office. Go outdoors for a few minutes and breathe some fresh air. These tactics can keep your head clear.

Resolve problems before logging on

Attempt to handle any con-cerns or tasks related to your personal life before you start your work for the day. Otherwise, you may be focused on tackling one problem when your mind should be on something else. While home and work issues will inevitably cross paths, do not use work hours to pay bills, sched-ule medical appointments or run house errands.

Reducing distractions is a key to telecommuting successfully. As more companies recognize the benefits of allowing employees to work from home, workers should step up to the challenge with dedication and focus.

Corinne moved to Armstrong with her parents in 1979 and picked asparagus as a teenager on weekends and after school. Now 36 years later she is growing asparagus (across the road from where she grew up) with her husband Mark.

Their rst harvest (in 1997) lasted only 10 days and was sold on the honor system. Customers bagged and weighed their own asparagus and made change in an ice cream bucket.

Today the farm (store) is set up to take you back in time with antiques and old photos of Armstrong and Spallumcheen. Recipe ideas, Asparagus Relish and Pickled Asparagus are just a few of the extras you will nd at the farm store. There is now also a second location at 4239 Salmon River Rd.

Mark & Corinne are excited to expand their market reach with asparagus to include the Vancouver and Coquitlam Farmers Markets. “Bringing a little taste of farm to the big city.”

A night out on the town means different things to many people. Tak-ing in a movie or dining at a favorite restaurant make great nights out for many people. But men and women looking to stray from the norm are increasingly combining seemingly unrelated activities for a night out that is both social and creatively rewarding.

“Paint-and-sip” or “paint-and-snack” businesses have grown increas-ingly popular in recent years. The premise is quite simple. Patrons reserve a spot (and canvas) and work their way through a painting, all the while conversing with friends and enjoying a spirited beverage or two along the way. Painting events have helped many men and women tap into their inner artist and make a few new friends along the way. The goal of such events is to have fun and teach adults about painting, and many men and women find the relaxed atmosphere encourages them to express their individuality and artistry.

Paint-and-sip events come in various styles. One of the more pop-ular scenarios has people working at an established painting studio, which provides the necessary artistic equipment while guests provide their own drinks and appetizers.

Some bars and restaurants also host social painting evenings.

Easels and canvasses may be brought into a venue, where partic-ipants can paint as they relax with a drink. Food and beverage specials may be part of the package price, or guests may buy items a la carte. Painting events can be organized for private parties, and such parties may take place at private residences or at restaurants or bars.

Painting parties have begun to replace more traditional party themes. Some find such parties an entertaining alternative to tradi-tional bachelor or bachelorette parties, while others host birthday parties or baby showers with painting themes. Painting parties also can be a fun way to get friends together for a girls’ or guys’ night out. In addition to a fun night out, participants get to take home their own work of art, which can be gifted or displayed for years to come.

My husband William started Keshiki Gardening in the spring of 1981, I joined him shortly after. We had no idea of the great adventure that we had embarked upon.

At that time there weren’t any cell phones, computers were a rarity, the biggest screen you could get for your t.v. was 21 inches to view both channels available and business was conducted with a hand shake! (btw no one had even heard of bottled water)!! We have seen many changes over thirty four years in business but the one thing that has not changed is our commitment to our customers.

Whether it is grounds maintenance, irrigation services or snow removal we pride ourselves in keeping updated and educated so we can give our customers the best service possible. We find great joy in our work, our customers and our life in the Okanagan Valley. Many of our loyal

customers have been with us from the beginning, I believe that says something about our work ethic.

Besides work, I also have a great time at Zumba, enjoy a good book and most of all visits with our sons Jonathan and Christopher who are now off on their own adventures.

Women and men are different in many ways, but they do

share some similarities, especial-ly when it comes to their respec-tive spending habits. Perception and reality do not necessarily equate when examining the spending habits of women. Several different organizations took a closer look at what wom-en choose to purchase, and the results may just surprise you.

According to Mortgage Choice, women spend more on socializing than on fashion and beauty products. In addition, women spend roughly the same amount on socializing as men do (37.7 percent for women versus 36.2 percent for men). Men and women seem to spend similarly on entertainment as well. Having fun and enjoying time out with friends seems to be a big source of spending regardless of gen-der.

According to KBK Wealth Connection, a company dedi-cated to empowering women and the financial services profes-sionals who serve them, women tend to spend money regularly on smaller purchases while men prefer to buy big-ticket items on

occasion. In a 2010 Center on Philan-

thropy report, researchers dis-covered that women tend to give more to charity than men. Wom-en also seem to be better than men at repaying loans, accord-ing to data from The Wall Street Journal. However, men generally save more for retirement. A Save-Up.com survey found that Amer-ican men have 28.8 percent more in retirement 401(k) plans than women.

Both men and women admit to indulging in a little retail therapy when they need mood boosters. However, how they spend that money differs. According to a survey by Ebates.com, women indulge in clothing purchases for retail therapy while men tend to splurge on food and electronics.

Research also has indicat-ed that women do not appear to spend impulsively. Ladies can be patient at comparison shopping and mining for deals both in-store and through online sources. Data compiled by the coupon service 8Coupons.com says women can take up to 40 percent longer than men as they mull over their decisions and try to find a better price elsewhere.

Research also finds that wom-en enjoy spending their hard-earned salaries on making their homes warm and friendly for their families and guests.

Women also are likely to direct money toward their chil-dren’s well-being, often putting children’s needs before their own when it comes to spending disposable income.

Research into the spending habits of men and women can illuminate how members of each gender tend to allocate their disposable incomes. But drawing too many conclusions on spend-ing habits based on gender alone can be problematic, as such habits are often influenced by individual situations and expe-riences as much as gender.

How to take back your downtimeMany working professionals have hectic schedules. Perhaps

due to technology that now allows men and women to stay connected to the office no matter where they might be, a great number of men and women now exceed the traditional full-time employment standard of 40 hours per week. In fact, data from the 2013 and 2014 Gallup Work and Education polls indicates that adults employed full time work an average of 47 hours per week, almost an entire extra workday.

Some working professionals have little recourse with regard to reducing the number of hours they work each week. But those who find themselves unknowingly working extra hours, whether it’s by checking work emails at home or answering business calls even after leaving the office, can take steps to regain their downtime for themselves.

• Schedule activities during before or after office hours Men and women who want to take back their downtime may ben-

efit if they start to schedule activities during those hours that aren’t meant to be spent at the office. Rather than planning on going to the gym, plans that can easily fall apart if a particularly difficult project lands on your desk, schedule sessions with a physical trainer or sign up for classes with a friend or family member. You will be less likely to work during your downtime if you have already paid for a training session or class or have scheduled a dinner date or another activity with a loved one. Especially busy professionals can plan activities for one or two weeknights per week so they know they are leaving the office on time no less than 20 percent of the time.

• Encourage team-building activities with coworkers One way to ensure you get out of the office on time is to promote

team-building activities with your coworkers. Propose a company softball team or encourage your bosses to sponsor a company bowl-ing team. Such activities can create stronger bonds between you and your coworkers, and they also ensure all of you get out of the office on time at least once per week. While you won’t necessarily avoid talking about work, you will be out of the office and having fun while you relax rather than sitting at your desk and burning the midnight oil.

Kiley is the ‘little red hen’ behind the recipes that come to fruition from harvest to production, bottling, labelling and marketing at her farm-gate Storefront and Factory Outlet in beautiful Coldstream, BC. Like many businesses, Back to Earth Enviro Products Inc. www.getbacktoearth.com started in the kitchen. After intense research on the effects of toxins in household cleaning, face care, baby, teas, and personal care products, she was left overwhelmed and horrified with what she realized that she herself, was using in her own home. Surrounded by hundreds of healing indigenous plants and her knowledge of the benefits of 100% therapeutic grade essential oil blends, she set out to create her footprint in the world of organic, raw earth aware products. This fascination of   aromatherapy and herbarium, has led Kiley on a path to over 54 earth friendly products.

• Turn off your devices Professionals who own smartphones or tablets can now check work

emails or monitor work projects whether they’re sitting in their of-fices or lounging on the couch at home with their families. Working men and women looking to work less during their downtime should consider turning off those devices that keep them connected to their offices. This may be more difficult than you think, as a 2013 survey conducted by Opinion Matters on behalf of GFI Software found that 39 percent of participants acknowledged checking work emails outside of standard work hours, while a whopping 81 percent of the more than 500 respondents said they check their work email on weekends. Men and women who want to regain their downtime for themselves can try turning off their devices upon leaving the office, resisting the tempta-tion to check work emails on nights and weekends.

Working professionals looking to spend less of their downtime working can avoid checking work emails after leaving their offices for the day.

How to avoid unhealthy habits at the office

Professionals spend an average of 8.5 hours per day at work. Many profes-sionals spend much of their time at work sitting down in front of a comput-er, which can be detrimental to long-term health.

Staying sedentary for long periods of time can contribute to a host of health ailments, including being overweight and obese. But professionals who work in offices can take various steps to ensure all that time at work is not having an adverse affect on their overall health.

• GET OUT OF YOUR SEAT Modern workplaces are built around sitting, so workers must find some

time to stand up and stretch. Sitting too long can compromise posture and lead to craning of the neck for looking at the computer screen. Get out of your chair, walk around the office and get the blood moving in your body.

Getting up and moving around is key to good health while on the job.

Katherine Harvey• PACK YOUR LUNCH

Bringing lunch to work puts you in greater control over the foods you are eating. You can pack a healthy and diverse selection of foods. Don’t forget to also bring some snacks that offer a healthy mix of protein and carbohy-drates to keep your energy levels up. Otherwise, you may succumb to the temptation of the lunchroom snack machine.• Take frequent breaks. Stale air inside an office environment can make you feel fatigued and less productive. Also, spending too much time behind your desk may contribute to feelings of stress and tension. Use every opportu-nity possible to get up and leave your office. In-stead of sending an instant mes-sage or making a phone call to a coworker, visit him or her in person. Use your lunch hour to get outside instead of eating at your desk. Plan a brief, mid-afternoon walk outside of your office to clear your mind and get some fresh air.

• DISINFECT SURFACES OFTEN Oftentimes, when one person at the office gets sick, many others soon

follow. Colds and the flu can spread rapidly in close quarters. Keep your desk drawer stocked with some alcohol swabs or disinfecting spray and routinely clean your keyboard, mouse, touchscreen, and desk surfaces. You also can wipe off door handles and knobs around the office if you want to be proactive.

• REST YOUR EYES Close your eyes and look away from the computer monitor every 20 min-

utes. Focusing on objects of varying distances can help keep the eyes strong and reduce fatigue.

It’s not difficult to remain healthy at work. Breaks, exercise and watching what you eat can help.

As much of the world slowly recovers from the far-reaching economic down-turn that began in 2008, the International Monetary Fund has predicted a 3.2 percent growth for the global econo-my in 2015.

Some countries have already witnessed an uptick in industrial growth. But other nations are not seeing the same level of success. Slow growth and inflation is plaguing areas of South America. Trade surpluses in Germany are likely to shrink in 2015. There is still steady growth in areas of Asia, but China’s projected 7.1 percent growth, though high compared to other nations, is the country’s lowest in 15 years.

With regard to the econ-omy, job growth and more qualified people returning to the marketplace continue to benefit the economy.

But certain industries have emerged as the safest bets for employment possibilities and success in 2015. A re-cent survey from researchers at Michigan State University found certain job sectors an-ticipate strong hiring growth

of recent college graduates and others with industry experience.

Growth in information services, which includes telecommunications, pub-lishing, motion pictures, and broadcasting, is expected to surge. Finance and in-surance remain strong and safe bets for employment as banks now will make up for cutbacks during the reces-sion. Other strong employ-ment contenders include management consulting, accounting, law, computer design, and engineering services.

Health and wellness ser-vices appear recession-proof as well. IBISWorld Industry Research notes pilates and yoga studios were highly re-sistant to the recession. With a predicted annual growth of 4.8 percent, these health and wellness industries are targeted for growth and in-creased success in 2015.

Pieces of the global eco-nomic puzzle are coming together while others are falling out of the mix, and it should be interesting to see how the world economy reacts in the new year.
