COME HOLY SPIRIT

Ever notice how, at mass, the

priest prays to the Father, in the

unity of the Holy Spirit, and through

Christ our Lord?  If it sounds like a

formula. . .it is.  Jesus comes, from

the Father, born as one of us ‐ from

a mom just as we all were born from

a mom.  He lived, ate, laughed,

played soccer, listened to music,

looked at the stars, and grew up

near the water ‐ just like us.  He

gave his life ‐ which was both

human and divine‐ for us and rose

from the dead returning to the

Father.

Through the sacraments and the

power of the Holy Spirit, Jesus still

remains with us ‐ in Holy

Communion, in the Bible, and

wherever we, as Christians, gather

in his name.  It is the Holy Spirit ‐

the third person of the Trinity‐ who

is powerfully making Christ present

to us in these ways.

This is why at mass we say our

prayers ‐ "to the Father, in the unity

of the Holy Spirit, through Christ

our Lord."  Jesus is our way to the

Father, and our relationship with

Christ is in the very love and Spirit

of God ‐ the Holy Spirit.  Our

challenge and mission in this life is

to live always open and full of the

love of God.  It says in the Bible,

"the Love of God has been

poured into our hearts through the

Holy Spirit that has been given to

us"(Romans 5:5).  This happened to

your soul and mine at Baptism,

again at Confirmation, and renewed

through Christ in every Eucharist.

Why this heavy theology Fr.

Dave? (well, it is Pentecost, the

exalted solemnity in our religious

life celebrating Jesus' sending the

Holy Spirit onto the Apostles and

into the world) But I can't help but

think of Heaven and it's connection

to the events we remember today.

Frank Sheed, a good Irish Catholic

writer (akin to C.S. Lewis in my

opinion), writes: "When we come to

die there is only one question that

matters – have we sanctifying grace

in our souls? If we have, then to

heaven we shall go. If we have not,

then to heaven we cannot go b/c

our souls lack the powers that living

in heaven calls for.

It would be no advantage to find

a kind gate‐keeper if we did not

have the powers to live once we got

in. We need super‐natural life, and

we must get it here upon earth. To

die lacking it means eternal failure."

We all want to make it to

heaven; that's part of why we come

to mass.  We are given here a new

power ‐ a new, higher life is blown

into our souls, poured into our

hearts, so that we can come to the

Father, in the unity of the Holy

Spirit, through Christ our Lord.

There, with the Trinity, the angels,

our ancestors and family members

who have gone before us in faith,

the party begins. . . and I can't wait

to taste the Doritos in Heaven!

Happy Pentecost Everyone.

In Christ,

MUSIC NOTES from Lou’s Desk 732-295-3630 Ext 36

Jesus, The Bridge Over Troubled Water

We have all heard the song “Bridge Over Troubled Waters” by Simon and Garfunkel. There isn’t a person in this world who has not felt down and out when the pressures of life get the best of them. In taking a closer look at the lyr-ics, we can easily translate them into Christian principal.

“When tears are in your eyes I’ll dry them all.” Perhaps we can rephrase that by saying “When tears are in our eyes Jesus dries them all.

”I’m on your side when times get rough, and friends just can’t be found.” Christ is always on our side when the chips are down and at times we feel alone.

“Like a bridge over troubled waters I will lay me down.” True friends will go out on a limb, just as Jesus sacrificed his life for our redemption.

Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy. Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy. Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, that I may love but what is holy. Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy. Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy. Amen.

- St. Augustine

YOUTH MINISTRY

with Bob Morris All High School Youth Are Welcome!!

732-295-3630 ext. 31 [email protected]

Happy Memorial Day. Please remember to

take time from whatever you are doing this weekend to pray for the souls of those veterans that gave their lives for us.

Anna White Scholarship Update: All the can-didates were well-qualified and were very im-pressive during their interviews, making it a diffi-cult choice for those of us on the committee, but we have made our decision and we are proud to announce the winner is Tyler McKelvey. Congratulations to Tyler!

Tyler worships here every week, and is graduating from Brick Memorial High School; he currently has a 4.0 GPA. He will be attending Ocean County College next year and after completing his studies there, he plans to attend The College of New Jersey (TCNJ). He will major in Mathematics and he intends to be an actu-ary. Best of luck to Tyler!

The Holy Spirit keeps the church ever new

and ever young. The Holy Spirit fills the church with life and joy and really is the Supreme Youth Minister. Let’s all pray that the Holy Spirit revives the faith among our young people and our own youth ministries.

Prayer “Come Holy Spirit renew the hearts of your

faithful, kindle in them the fire of your love and you shall renew the face of the earth.”
