Now that the headlines have disappeared andthe television cameras have found other stories tocover, the parents of Trayvon Martin, the youngman who was fatally shot last February by an outof control neighborhood watchman in Florida, must be wondering just where all of the friendsand supporters have gone. It always seems to hap-pen that way in life. One day you are on the frontpage and the next you are on the last. That is thefate of the Martin family.

The alleged shooter, George Zimmerman, hasrecently appeared in photographs with a swollennose and wounds on the back of his head. Giventhe sloppiness with which the Sanford police han-dled the case, the wounds could have taken placeat any time.

In fact, Zimmerman may have inflicted thewounds on himself. He is a in a fight for a life, knowing that he was wrong in the first place andthere is nothing that he will not do to prevent him-

self from going to jail. Those of us who care about Trayvon and his

family should start a letter writing campaign to hismother. We should be sending her cards and flow-ers and gifts of money if we can afford it. Being amother, I know that there is nothing that will repairthe loss that she feels after the death of her child. But she needs to know that there are thousands ofpeople who remain on her side, even though theinternational newspaper reporters and the nationaltelevision cameras have left.

It is the least that we can do for this mother whohas suffered and will continue to suffer for yearsto come. Imagine, if you can, the tremendous painthat she feels. Imagine the depth of the hole thathas been left in her heart. While Trayvon willnever return to comfort her, she still has us. Andwe must do all that we can to be there for her andher entire family.

There is now an attempt to taint the life ofTrayvon. There are suggestions that he had illegaldrugs in his system. None of that matters. The factof the matter is that he was an innocent youngman on his way home from a store with two smallitems that he had just purchased. The man whokilled him was ordered by police to remain in hiscar but he went against their instructions, stalkedyoung Trayvon and killed him.

Trayvon’s mother must know that we will neverforget, that she is not alone and that we, like her, will continue to pursue justice and fairness in herson’s murder.

Minister of the Week Student of the Week

The Dallascommunity wasrecently blessedby the visitationof Reverend andMrs. Joseph E.Lowery from At-lanta. The vet-

eran civil rights leader is best known for hisbenediction at the inaugural of PresidentBarack Obama. At the close of the swearing inceremony, Reverend Lowery, a Methodistminister and former president of the SouthernChristian Leadership Conference, gave aprayer that was heard around the world. It wasa fitting close to the address by the firstAfrican American to head the world’s mostpowerful nation.

Reverend Lowery, one of the nation’s lead-ing members of the clergy, came to Dallas forpolitical purposes, but the throngs of peoplewho came out to see him wanted to simplytouch him or have a brief word with him. Rev-erend Lowery, who was also an assistant to Dr.Martin Luther King. He was one of the mindsbehind the genius that was Dr. King.

Reverend Lowery has never been afraid ofpower. At the funeral of Mrs. Martin LutherKing he challenged then President George W.Bush to stop the war in the Mideast and to cre-ate a nation whose major mission was thespreading of world peace. Some of those in at-tendance were somewhat caught by surprisethat Dr. Lowery would challenge PresidentBush in a public forum, but Dr. Lowery hasnever been one to hold his piece in the face ofpower.

Under his leadership the Southern Leader-ship Conference grew in membership and be-came a forceful voice in civil rights circles inthis country. While he was president the typeof bickering and infighting that has plaguedthe organization recently did not occur. Dr.Lowery was everyone’s president and every-one’s friend.

Dr. Lowery has gained global prominencebecause of his preaching and his activism. While he is long in years, his preaching equalsthat of any young preacher in America. He hasalways spoken with authority and with a depthof knowledge. Dr. Lowery has always encour-aged young people, telling them that they arethe future of the civil rights movement and thatthey had to prepare themselves for the uncer-tainties that would certainly come.

One of the reasons that Dr. Lowery has beenable to stand as strong and as long as he has isdue to the support of his wife and partner, Mrs.Evelyn Lowery, An activist in her own right, she once headed the women’s division of theSouthern Christian Leadership Conferenceand is a giant speaker in her own right.

Whenever and wherever Dr. Lowery ap-pears, Mrs. Lowery is there with him. Duringthe times that he has been down she has beenthere to encourage him. But for him, it is ques-tionable whether or not he would have had thesuccess that he has experienced. They make awonderful team who has given of themselves

Church womanof the week

Every election cycle we hear from candidates at everylevel talking about what they have done in the past orwhat they plan to do in the future. Far too often theseare exaggerations backed up by empty promises thatnever quite get filled.

In the race for Congress in the brand new 33rd Con-gressional District, our past experiences with candidateshave proven true once more--with one exception:Domingo Garcia.

The Reverend Dr. Joseph Lowery and the late Rev-erend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. talked about "contentof character" being a more important factor than the"color of one's skin." That sentiment has never beenmore fitting.

The 33rd Congressional District was created for mi-nority representation. It is imperative that the represen-tative of this district be a coalition builder and not adivider. After taking a hard look at the candidates, Elite News

and other major minority newspapers can say with100% confidence that Domingo Garcia, the front run-ner, is the ONLY choice for voters in both Dallas andTarrant Counties.

His proven record of standing up for civil rights andlegislative record of passing the James Byrd, Jr. HateCrimes Act cannot be ignored. He has been a true friendand benefactor for our community. One of his Fort Worth opponents, who is a distant sec-

ond in the congressional race, has been proudly embrac-ing the endorsement of the right wing, conservativeDallas Morning News; an outlet that has historically andtraditionally not supported the interests of the minoritycommunity or respected our minority leaders. This op-

ponent has, as a final act of desperation, resorted to in-tensely negative campaign ads and voter suppression. He has been hiding behind a conservative WashingtonD.C. PAC to attack his opponents and has placed hisown personal connections to payday lenders, who arevictimizing our community, and his financial ambitionsand connections to corporations, ahead of several issuesthat are relevant to adequately serving the minoritycommunities he seeks to represent.

This is reason enough for voters to be wary of him.Additionally, this opponent is also a little too cozy withDallas billionaire Harold Simmons who called PresidentObama "The most dangerous American alive." Whenyou couple those things with his history of voting in Re-publican Primaries and his self-serving relationshipswith the fact that he has made a concerted effort to cam-paign on such divisive points as race, economic dispar-ity, and county lines, a vote for that opponent would be

a vote against our very values and our own best inter-est.

Domingo Garcia is a major supporter of PresidentObama and has met with him on several occasions todiscuss issues critical to the minority community.Domingo was instrumental in fighting the RepublicanVoter ID bill that was designed to turn back the clockin our community and create more barriers to vote.

This bill is reminiscent of the poll tax and Jim Crowlaws that suppressed the African American vote fordecades and is one of many examples of Domingo Gar-cia’s experience as one who has always fought for equalrights and justice for all. As a coalition builder, Domingo Garcia has a history

and proven track record of uniting people and we needsomeone like him that can fight for our communities inWashington DC.

As a graduate of the Thurgood Marshall School ofLaw at Texas Southern University, Domingo has en-dowed a scholarship fund there to help make sure moreyoung minorities can afford to go to law school. During his time on the Dallas City Council, he pushed

against the establishment to pass single-member dis-tricts so that we could elect someone from our owncommunity. As a State Representative, Domingo did not "go along

to get along," he fought for all people of color and forour values. The balance of his career is impeccable.

Elite News wholeheartedly endorses Domingo Garciafor Congress. He is the most qualified, has the most im-pressive record, and he is ready to lead. We know he will be a strong voice for everyone in this

district.

As the Early Voting period of the delayedDemocratic Primary gets underway,

Domingo Garcia—the man arguably consid-ered the Congressional District 33 frontrun-ner—received some big name support in theform of the “dean of the civil rights move-ment” Reverend Joseph E. Lowery.Reverend Lowery announced his endorse-

ment of Domingo Garcia at a communityleaders luncheon held on last week. In his re-marks he stated, "Domingo is sensible andsensitive, and more than competent andcourageous. He is the same fella’ that hasmarched for causes for the betterment of ourcommunities across Texas and our country. He is the same fella’ that worked with Rev-erend Jesse Jackson Jr. on his campaign forPresident, when it wasn't the most popularthing to do. He is a bridge builder for all peo-ple, of all colors. It's the content of characterthat matters. Domingo Garcia is the best can-didate."Reverend Lowery traveled to the metro-

plex to lend hisname and reputa-tion as a civil rightspioneer to Garcia’scampaign in thenewly-created Con-gressional District33. Making appear-ances in both Tar-rant and Dallascounties, ReverendLowery’s energyand enthusiasm forGarcia was evident. In response to

Reverend Lowery’sendorsement to thecampaign, Garciaremarked, “Person-ally, it is very hum-bling. ForReverend Loweryto travel all of thisway to support me isan incredible honor.Politically, it is agame-changer forus.”A veteran of the

epic civil rightsstruggles forAfrican Americansin the 1960’s, Rev-erend Lowery andReverend Dr. Mar-tin Luther King, Jr.co-founded theSouthern ChristianLeadership Confer-ence (SCLC). Intheir many years ofstruggle, Lowery,King, and ReverendRalph Abernathywere set upon bypolice dogs, batons, fire hoses and bru-tality in their nonvi-olent pursuit ofequal rights for allAmericans.

Garcia further remarked, “I am proud to bethe only candidate running a true district-wide, coalition campaign. If we allow this tobe a Tarrant versus Dallas or Black versusHispanic campaign, we betray the legacy ofRev. Lowery and Dr. King. They fought fora colorblind society. I am committed to con-tinuing that fight.”One person apparently disgruntled by

Lowery’s endorsement of Gar-cia? Lesser-known candidateMarc Veasey dashed off an emailquestioning Rev. Lowery’s deci-sion-making ability that struckmany as insulting. With a laugh, Dr. Lowery

replied, "I understand that an-other candidate questionswhether or not I'm competent inmy decision to endorse DomingoGarcia. I may be viewed as se-nile by Marc Veasey, and I'msorry that he feels that way. I ama senior citizen but in no way se-nile...ask my wife what shethinks. I know who I am and Iknow why I'm here. I know his-tory and I know Domingo Garcia.I've been down this road before.

This is not a rash decision. I did my researchand made my calls on the race and the candi-dates. I boldly stand firm in my endorsementof Domingo Garcia."Although many of the 11 Democratic can-

didates vying for the brand new seat seem-ingly profess a commitment to civil rights,Garcia appears to be the only one who has a

proven record in that area. From his fight for single-member

districts for the Dallas City Councilto his passage of the “James Byrd, Jr.Hate Crimes Act,” Garcia’s willing-ness to stand up to the establishmentand irreverence for the status quo isapparently paying dividends in thiscampaign.A state chair for the Reverend

Jesse Jackson’s 1984 campaign forthe Presidency, Garcia has a decades-long and strong record of pursuingcivil rights and equal rights. Garciadeclined to announce any upcomingendorsements or in-district appear-ances, stating simply, “Stay tunedand get your popcorn ready. We ex-pect a few more major endorsementsto come in before May 29th.”

Dear Dr. Hollie,I am a “saved, sanctified, filled with the HolyGhost” Christian. My husband is not. He grewup in church and knows the Bible backwards andforwards. He is correcting and encouraging meall the time with Scripture. He’s a fairly goodperson. However, sometimes he does bad things. He basically makes his money from illegal activ-ities. While that is an issue within itself, it is notwhat I am looking for your help on. I know thatyou are a Pastor so I want to get your take on this. So, even though he is not an “active Christian”,he is a FAITHFUL tither. He has the one churchthat he tithes to. Whether he goes every othermonth or not for months at a time, he saves histithes for whenever he makes it back. I have seenhim on numerous occasions make a transactionthen take 10% off the top. This all drives mecrazy. I don’t whether to be proud of him fordoing that, or think he is crazy and it’s all in vainbecause the money is not coming from the rightplace. Maybe you can give me your perspectiveon this.

Driving Me insane

Dear Driving, the “Good News” is that your husband isworking on his faith and his commitment toGod by honoring the tithe offering. He, likemany of us, has areas of fault that we areworking on. with trust and belief, it is ourprayer that he will make the necessary changesin his lifestyle.Dr. Hollie is a Pastor and practicing psychotherapist in thecity. As we daily search thescriptures, the Holy Spirit

will reveal our sins to us. The word of Godspeaks to us in Joshua 1:8 and says “Thisbook of law shall not depart out of thymouth; but thou shalt meditate therein dayand night, that thou mayest observe to doaccording to all that is written therein; forthen thou shalt make thy way prosperousand then thou shalt have good success”.When sin is revealed, we must confess itspecifically to God. We must declare ourheart felt purpose not to repeat the sin norto allow it to become a habit. “if we con-fess our sins, He is faithful and just to for-give us our sins, and to cleanse us from allunrighteousness” (1 John 1:9)

During each election season, we are asked tovote on candidates and positions in local racesthat have a direct impact on our daily lives. Many times, in our hurried schedules, we donot know the individuals or much about the po-sitions they are seeking. Our paper prides itselfon endorsing and recommending individualsthat we believe are the most qualified and arein tune with the needs of our community.

In the race for the 162nd civil district courtof Dallas County, there are two individuals thatstand out above the rest and are deserving ofour endorsement and your support. Although adual endorsement has never been done by thispaper before, we believe that these two candi-dates are the best qualified candidates for theMay 29th election that will, more than likely, result in a run off. With a crowded field of sixcandidates, Judge Teresa Guerra Snelson andPhyllis Lister Brown are the two distinguishedcandidates that this paper is proud to endorse.

Judge Teresa Guerra Snelson has been li-censed for 21 years, has been board certified for14 years and is currently an associate civil courtjudge in Dallas County, a position she has heldfor the last 8 years. A first generationAmerican of Mexican descent, she hasalways given back to her communityand is the immediate past president ofthe Dallas Hispanic Bar Association.Judge Teresa Guerra Snelson has themost relevant experience as it pertainsto the 162nd civil district court.

Phyllis Lister Brown has been li-censed for 25 years, has been a litigationattorney for 12 years and most recentlyserved as a city of Dallas municipalcourt judge for the last 10 years. A Dal-las native, she too gives back to hercommunity and is the current founda-tion chair of the J.L. Turner Legal Asso-ciation. Phyllis Lister Brown’s judicialexperience, although different from acivil district court judge, should not bediscounted.

Maricela Moore, does not believe thatexperience is relevant. As an attorneythat has been licensed only ten yearswith limited trial experience, one wouldquestion the thought process of how shecame to that conclusion. Also left toquestion is the fact that this candidatehas legally changed her name, a fact thatis public record, to run for the 162ndcivil district court bench. Was her prior

name not good enough or is she trying to appealto a certain group of people? Is it deceptive ordeceitful that we do not really know this candi-date because of her personal agenda? Is shegoing to put her self-serving ambition ahead ofthe needs of our community if elected?

Although Baltasar Cruz, has been licensedfor 22 years and has a wide legal ban-width, helacks the judicial experience. Additionally, thisis his fourth attempt at elected office and manyhave viewed him has unelectable.

David Diaz, has been licensed for 13 yearsand has litigation experience, however, he toolacks the judicial experience. Not much isknown of Scot Perry, a personal injury lawyer, who has been virtually non-existent throughoutthis campaign process.

It is important to know who you are votingfor and what they stand for. Integrity matters.Experience matters. Quality matters. Your votematters. It is our responsibility to endorse can-didates whom we believe feel the same. We areproud to endorse Judge Teresa Guerra Snelsonand Phyllis Lister Brown for judge of the 162ndcivil district court.

Worth, The AIDS HealthcareFoundation’s sponsorship of Radio One’s97.9 The Beat DUB Car Show and Concertwas especially important becauseDallas cur-rently ranks as the number one city in theState of Texas for new incidence ofHIV/AIDS. The highest rates of NEW infec-tions occur in 13-24 year olds.

The key to helping end new transmissionsis prevention and access. AHF has specially-designed a 70-foot long, 18 wheel ‘CondomNation’ big rig truck currently travelingacross the country giving out 10 million con-doms to those who cannot afford retail pricedcondoms and who are not near services thatgive them out freely. In Fort Worth and Dal-las, the Condom Nation Tour distributed overa quarter million condoms to thousands ofenthusiastic recipients. One young man ex-

claimed, "Man this is great, I can't afford con-doms, and that's why I have two kids!"

Together with eight local community part-ner agencies led by John Reed of Ft. Worth'sAIDS Outreach Center and Ed "Mr. Preven-tion" Jones and Jason Gutierrez of AIDSARMS in Dallas, The AIDS HealthcareFoundation’s Condom Nation Tour testedover 800 people over 3 days, and identified 5positive individualswho will now be able toreceive access to thelife saving care, counsel-ing, and medication they need to live ahealthy life.

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation is thelargest provider of HIV Medical Services inthe country. In partnership with the AIDSOutreach Center in Ft. Worth they are open-ing a beautiful new free healthcare center lo-cated at 400 Beach Street, as well as anot-for-profit pharmacy that can fill almostany prescription and accepts most insuranceplans. 96 cents of every prescription filledgoes directly to the care and treatment of peo-ple living with HIV/AIDS right here in theDallas/Ft. Wow!! This was a greatyear of sports for our Metro-plex. This sports season theMetroplex saw first timestate champions, we sawteams repeat as state cham-pion. We saw state titles infootball, basketball, andtrack.

This year in sports wasvery exciting in everysport. We watched as SouthLake Carroll won anotherstate championship in foot-ball. Southlake held off avery good Skyline team andwent on to show that it'ssome serious football playedin DFW.

We saw Flower MoundMarcus win back to backstate championships in bas-ketball. Marcus Smart wasone of the most exciting ath-letes I've seen since ByronEaton. Smarts will to winwas something to watch andyou could tell he's a winner!!

The Kimball Knights wonback to back state champi-onships in basketball. SeniorShanno Lilly showed evey-body that basketball is notjust a big mans game. Lillyshowed everybody that hewas one of the nations topshooting guards. Lilly wonback to back MVP awardsand put Kimball on the mapas a basketball power house. The Duncanville girls bas-ketball team won the Statetitle and continued to proveto be a national power. Theselady's were fast, strong, andpowerful. This years Pantherteam just seemed to be on amission, and the missionwas accomplished.

The Lancaster track teamsgirls and boys won state ti-tles in track and field andcontinued to be the measur-ing stick for high schooltrack programs. The Tigersare second to none when itcomes to track! The boys re-

ally surprised me, theseyoung men stepped up thisgame and put together animpressive championshipseason. I have always likedto see the lady Tigers com-pete. These young ladieshave put style and flare intotrack. The lady Tigers styleis as common to track aswinning state title .

DeSoto Eagles won theirfirst ever boys state title, andthe DeSoto Lady Eagleswon back to back state titles. The DeSoto boys had one ofthe best relay teams in thehistory of track and field. The sprint relay was great towatch and this years teamwas full of great talent. Thelady Eagle's just showed theMetroplex how to win trackmeets. The Lady Eagles wonseveral meets this season byreally large point margins.

The Lady Eagles weregreat to watch and provedthat they are true champi-ons.Having this much suc-cess in sports does notsurprise me. I have alwaysenjoyed comparing talentfrom state to state. The con-versation has alwaysbeen, which state has themost talent, which state has

the most athletes? Somepeople will tell you the bestathletes come from 3 states-Texas, Florida and Califor-nia .Now some people willdisagree and some peoplewill agree. This is not a hardconcept to agree with, theseare the 3 largest states inAmerica. The bigger thestate, the more athletes youhave. I did not say this was afact, it's just an ongoing con-versation. Athletes are themain thing you want, but theone thing you need is a greatcoach! Congratulations tothe coaches of these cham-poinship programs becausewithout a great coach tocoach great players you willmiss the mark everytime Butone thing that is a fact, theMetroplex produced someunforgettable sports mo-ments and gave us a lot ofgreat kids to support, cheerfor, and really be proudof!Thank you coaches!!Thank you Student-Athletes.And Thank you Metroplexsports fans for just beingthere!!May God Bless Youan Help Us Change theWorld!!Mark A Toliver II
