RENO, Nev. - Hall of Famer

    Jimmy Schroeder of

    Tonawanda, N.Y., became the

    sixth bowler in USBC Open

    Championships history to make

    65 appearances on the tourna-

    ment lanes.

    The 83-year-old right-hander

has traveled thousands of milesand overcome health challenges,

    including three major hip sur-

    geries, to keep his consecutive

streak intact, and he made his

    65th straight appearance May

    18-19 at the National Bowling

    Stadium in Reno, Nev. He

    received a plaque, chevron and

    custom ring to commemorate

    the milestone.

    "Bowling has been great to

me, and I have met so many

    wonderful people," said

Schroeder, who made his Open Championships

debut at the 1949 event in Atlantic City, N.J., and

was inducted into the USBC Hall of Fame in 1990.

"At this time in my life, this means a lot to me, and

it gives me something to look forward to each year.

    Sometimes, just walking from

the hotel is a challenge because I

just don't have the stamina any-

more, but I'm still hoping to

make it a few more years to

    catch Joe and Bill."

Late USBC Hall of Famer Joe

Norris of San Diego and the la te

Bill Doehrman of Fort Wayne,Ind., each competed in the Open

    Championships a record 71

    times, while Sylvester Thiel of

Lake City, Minn., is the active

    part icipation leader with 68

years. USBC Hall of Famer Bill

Lillard Sr. of Houston (66) and

the late Les Berry of Wooster,

Ohio (66) are the other bowlers

    to reach 65 years.

Schroeder, who is one of just

    13 members of the tournament's

    100,000-Pin Club, shot 530 in

singles, 485 in doubles and 479 in team this year for

a 1,494 total. He has knocked down 115,397 pins

and is third on the career pinfall list. Norris tops the

list with 123,770, while Lillard is the active pinfall

    leader with 121,434.

Jeff Rovetto 776 at Montvale LanesBy Robert Balzarek

MONTVALE, NJ Jeff Rovetto was the high scorer for the Montvale

Major League with 249-258-269-776. Joe Cauwels and Bob Higgins

had the high game with a 289.Justin Hawkins bowled 268-278-773, Joe Cauwels 269-289-766, Bob

Higgins 234-234-289-757, Mike Rovetto 257-277-744, Ray Keim 257-

260-741, Joe Rizzi 245-258-718, Rich Naclerio 237-268-712, John

Rankin Jr. 238-268-710, Dave Hulsizer 254-700, Keith Krokus 693,

Mike Raab 693, Larry Toppin 689, and Kevin Conroy bowled a 687.

Montvale Majors is getting ready for the 2013-2014 Season. If you

are interested in bowling in the league, please contact either Montvale

Lanes 201-291-3400 or contact the league secretary at

    [email protected].

Many a parent worries when a

    youngster becomes too interested in

    a sport, any sport.

They feel that at times a sport

can have a distracting influence on

    youthful participants when he or

    she should be concentrating more

    on the basics of education.

If the sport is bowling, theres lit-

    tle need for concern. Bowling

    enthusiasts must learn scoring and

    the math necessary. The numbers

    always need close attention, and

when a youngster becomes involvedwith averages, high games, high

series, point systems and the many

    other statistics connected with

bowling, they learn to figure quick-

ly and accurately, just to keep

    things honest. They also are

    exposed to various computer sys-

    tems.

They want to be able to decipher

entry blanks, rule books, to under-

stand them, to read accounts of

    leagues and tournaments and the

exploits of their bowling heroes in

    newspapers, bowling publications

    and magazines. Whether they

know it or not, they read more,

become better readers, and moreacquainted with words.

They learn how to win, to lose, to

    organize, and how important team

efforts are, and how it is just as

    important to foster individual goals,

and they learn about pressure with-

    out undue pressure on them.

Boys and girls interested in bowl-

ing cant bowl all they want because

    most allowances wont stretch that

far. Many become a little more

eager to do some extra chores

around the house to earn some

extra money to bowl some extra

games. Some take on a part-time

job, and some pick up pin money

by keeping score or helping at vari-

    ous bowling tournaments. They

learn more of the value of money

when they want that new ball or

    bag or shoes.

    Youngsters interested in bowling

cant help but have their competi-

tive juices and spirit aroused. And if

theyre not good bowlers they can

    become involved with the organiza-

    tional structure, creating and con-

    ducting and publicizing events. In

all ways the sport offers a social out-

let and an education, because bowl-

ing is a mirror of lifes success and

    failure, and youngsters can relate

much of what they do in bowling to

    other experiences.

Few young bowlers get into trou-ble, a tribute to the juniors who

bowl, the people who teach and

guide them, and the bowling cen-

ters in which they bowl. Ask any

    judge. Most bowling centers wel-

come juniors with open arms, but

dont baby them, and insist upon

    proper dress and actions. Young

people learn about rules, respect for

    other peoples property and also

    about discipline. But even more

should and could be done to attract

    and keep more young bowlers.

One of the great beauties of

bowling for youngsters is that it will

always be there. Some bowl the rest

of their lives. Many go throughgaps, absences from bowling

because of schooling, jobs, and mar-

    riage or family obligations. But

most come back at one time or

another, the fun and lessons they

learned in bowling taken out of

    storage.

    Books and bowling do get

    together. Math, history, finance,

    competition, satisfaction and an

    atmosphere answering a social need

with a physical outlet are combined.

    Mothers and fathers always will

worry. Those fears are cut to a min-

imum when boys and girls from

tots to teens discover bowling as an

    outlet.

And you never have to look very

far to find a bowling center.

    Idle Bowling Thoughts.

At last count there were 2

    bowlers who had recorded 90

three game sets. It took 10

years to have the first on

    approved. An interesting invit

tional event might be to gathe

    the tri perfecto shooters togeth

er for a competition made up

    one ball rounds, only strik

shooters and ties move on t

another round if they come to

    round in which noneregisters

    tenfall

    Before it was Times Squar

the busy, busy area in New Yor

    City was known as Longacr

Square. In 1895, the same ye

    the American Bowling Congre

    was founded, Osca

    four theaters, a roof garden,

    Most sports and othe

    organized activities are havin

    difficult times for a number

    reasons. But the main ai

should be for bowling leaders t

hang together as much as poss

Oakland, NJ - Not yet five feet tall and weighing less than

a hundred pounds, ten-year-old Louis Ferrante, Bowler City

IIIs little dynamo, exploded with an 810 handicap three-some, firing a scratch triple deuce [212-201-208: 621] to

earn recognition as the Stan Niemiec Youth Travel Leagues

Bowler of the Week in the season finale at Holiday Bowl.

Louis teammates Patrick and Tiffany Sucero added 214 and

183 respectively, but BC III was held to two points in its

tightly contested match with Boonton which came away

with a 2782-2730 triumph and a second place finish. The

torrid quartet hammered out a 2491 net set, led by the

Thundering Trio: Karl Kattermann 265-217: 658, Patrick

    Teshima 233-205: 632, and Justin Puchalski 215-202: 610 in

addition to a quality outing from Erik Kattermann 216-215.

On an afternoon which saw the youth travelers finish on a

high note, scrambling the pins with fifteen 600 sets and

forty-two 200s, focus was centered on the position battle

for the championship between pacesetting Bowler City I and

Fair Lawn. The latter needed to take all three games to wrest

the title away from the leaders and started off well, outlast-

ing BC I, 874-853 behind Jake Rollins 247 and StevePlaszky 205. Predictably, the middle faceoff went down to

the tenth frame: Dumont junior Ryan Perez posted 237, Rob

Gilbert, Jr 212 and anchor John Draney finished with a fou

bagger to power BC I to a 886-859 win, thus clinching fir

place. With the pressure off, the new champions showwhy they had the top rung most of the season by obliteratin

the maples in the finale with a season best 919 net, triggere

by John Draney 266 and Rob Gilbert, Jr 258. Fair Law

which finished third, were paced by Jake Rollins trip

    deuce 658 [247-207-204], Steve Plaszkys 210-205 an

Madison Perrys +47 over average set.

In other position contests, Bowler City II finished fifth b

downing shorthanded Montvale, 2646-2588 behind Ky

    Schellberg 248-204: 632, James Kane 227-212: 620 an

JonMikal Sepero 202-201. Montvales best came fro

    twelve-year-old Matt Russell 214: 585 and ten-year-o

Michaella Raab who rolled a +39 over average scor

Holiday I rode a stellar team outing from Graham Mulliga

    223-212: 606, Nick Cilento 211-209: 601, Brian Rizzi 25

and Ana DeLeon 211 to sweep past Bowler City IV who

top effort came from anchor Alijah Jackson 235: 611.

Although shorthanded, Holiday II earned all seven poin

from the vacancy thanks to big numbers from Joe Malyac279-200: 655 and Colette Malyacks consistent triple deuc
