MAY 31, 2020

Priest on Call – If you have an urgent need to contact a priest after hours, call (214) 232-7512. Need Prayer – Prayer Teams can pray with you during Sunday morning services.

Dear Saint Michael Church,

This coming Sunday is Pentecost Sunday, one of

the most important days of the church year. We have

special services planned at 9 A.M. and 11 A.M., so be sure to join

us online as we celebrate the conclusion of the Easter season and the coming of the Holy Spirit to the Church. Live stream worship will continue to be our primary form of corporate worship until larger groups are permitted to gather in the building.

We are very pleased to announce that beginning this Sunday afternoon between 1- 4 P.M., and continuing every Sunday afternoon until further notice, we will be distributing Holy Communion in person to parishioners in Saint Michael Chapel. If you would like to receive Communion on Sunday afternoon, please sign up ahead of time. Sign-ups will open each Wednesday morning (one week at a time) and are first-come, first-served. When you sign up, please provide your contact information and how many from your household plan to attend. This will allow us to space things out so that everyone doesn’t arrive at the same time. If you have any questions about the sign up process, please visit saintmichael.org/communion.

If you have any questions about the Communion distribution procedure, please contact the Rev. Bob Scott, Associate for Worship and Liturgy, at [email protected].

To sum things up, please join us every Sunday morning online, and then join us in person on Sunday afternoon if it is safe for you to do so. We are grateful for each one of you and remember you in our prayers.

Blessings,

WE’RE BACK!

That is a value that drives our ministry decisions, both in our Christian discipleship and in the way we show love to our most vulnerable neighbors. During this global pandemic, Saint Michael has raised $38,078 to help relief efforts, and our focus has been helping meet the needs of those with food insecurities. While this new initiative is still expanding and growing, we’re proud to be working with VNA Meals on Wheels, Jubilee Park, and Austin Street Shelter to feed those who don’t have enough food—but we can do more! Please consider joining the cause by donating to the Saint Michael Relief Fund, online at saintmichael.org/relief, or via Text-to-Give (text “Give” to  855.703.9385 to set up your account, then at any time afterwards, simple text a dollar amount and “relief”). Thank you for your help!

Processional Hymn

Hymn 225 “Hail thee, festival day!” Salve festa diesThe Pentecost Vesperal hymn Veni Creator Spiritus, in our

hymnal as #504, ranks as one of the most well-known plainsong hymns. Both de

Grigny and Duruflé’s settings of this chant rank among the

finest compositional examples of their era. Born into a

musical family, de Grigny most prominently served as

organist of the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Reims - - famous

as the cathedral in which France’s kings were crowned.

De Grigny’s only published work for organ is the Livre d’Orgue from 1699 which

includes five versets on Veni Creator of which we hear the

first and fourth today. The first presents the chant in

notes of lengthened duration on a prominent trumpet sound in the tenor voice

surrounded by majestic five-voice counterpoint. The lyrical fourth verset is an ornamented

solo line based on a portion of the chant accompanied by the

most delicate sounds of French Classic organs.

The Opening Acclamation & Collect for Purity

Celebrant Alleluia. Christ is risen.

People The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia.

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from

you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspi-

ration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily

magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hymn S 280 Gloria Robert Powell

Twentieth-century French composer Duruflé was among the first to grow up singing Gregorian chant as part of a renewed interest in chant. As a boy chorister at the Rouen Cathedral, he would have sung Veni Creator Spiritus every Pentecost for Vespers. His major organ work on this hymn was finished in 1930. A triptyque, it concludes with a hommage to the Baroque and Classic periods in French organ music, much like the de Grigny heard earlier, in a set of versets. Exactly like in the past, Duruflé’s first verset features a full statement of the chant using the organ’s shimmering principal chorus. More intimate variations follow. The concluding variation begins with a rhythmically active toccata figuration based on the chant melody whose energy swells to a glorious climax.

The Collect of the Day: Contemporary

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant Let us pray.

O God, who on this day taught the hearts of your faithful people by

sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit: Grant us by the same Spir-

it to have a right judgment in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his

holy comfort; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and

reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and

ever. Amen.

The Lesson Acts 2:1-21

When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in

one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush

of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.

Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested

on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began

Page 7: MAY 31, 2020€¦ · THE DAY OF PENTECOST MAY 31, 2020 Priest on Call – If you have an urgent need to contact a priest after hours, call (214) 232-7512. Need Prayer – Prayer Teams

to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in

Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered,

because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each.

Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking

Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native

language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia,

Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt

and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome,

both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs-- in our own languages we

hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” All were amazed and

perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others

sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.”

But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them,

“Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you,

and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose,

for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken

through the prophet Joel: `In the last days it will be, God declares, that I

will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters

shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men

shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those

days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show

portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and

fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon

to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. Then

everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ “

Deacon The Word of the Lord.

People Thanks be to God.

Psalm 104:25-35, 37 (Anglican chant) Edward C. Bairstow

O Lord, how manifold are your works! *

in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.

Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number, *

creatures both small and great.

There move the ships, and there is that Leviathan, *

which you have made for the sport of it.

All of them look to you *

to give them their food in due season.

You give it to them; they gather it; *

you open your hand, and they are filled with good things.

You hide your face, and they are terrified; *

you take away their breath, and they die and return to their dust.

You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; *

and so you renew the face of the earth.

May the glory of the Lord endure for ever; *

may the Lord rejoice in all his works.

He looks at the earth and it trembles; *

he touches the mountains and they smoke.

I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; *

I will praise my God while I have my being.

May these words of mine please him; *

I will rejoice in the Lord.

Bless the Lord, O my soul. *

Hallelujah!

The Gospel John 7:37-39

Gospeler The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing

there, he cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the

one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the be-

liever’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.’” Now he said this about

the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as yet there was no

Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

The Renewal of Baptismal Vows

Celebrant Through the Paschal mystery, dear friends, we are buried with

Christ by Baptism into his death, and raised with him to

newness of life. I call upon you, therefore, now that our Lenten

observance is ended, to renew the solemn promises and

vows of Holy Baptism, by which we once renounced Satan and

all his works, and promised to serve God faithfully in his holy

Catholic Church.

Celebrant Do you reaffirm your renunciation of evil and

renew your commitment to Jesus Christ?

People I do.

Celebrant Do you believe in God the Father?

People I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and

earth.

Celebrant Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?

People I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit

and born of the Virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again.

He ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Celebrant Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?

People I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Today’s feast day is highlighted by the first virtual anthem sung by our full adult choir! One of the greatest English composers of the 16th-century, Tallis worked in the Chapel Royal from 1543 until his death in 1585. Today’s anthem was first published in 1565,

and is a classic example of the choral music considered appropriate at the time for Anglican liturgy with its emphasis on a clear hearing of the text via one or few notes per syllable. Liturgically, its text was appointed for Pentecost in the lectionary of the 1549 Book of Common Prayer, and is hence here offered on Pentecost.

power to serve you as a royal priesthood, and to preach the Gospel

to all nations.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and

with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim

the glory of your Name:

Hymn S 129 Sanctus and Benedictus Robert Powell

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself,

and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you,

in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our

human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God

and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience

to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus

Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and

gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given

for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he

gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the

new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of

sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Sung by All

During the season of Easter, we return to the practice of the

Early Church and stand during the Prayer of Consecration and

the Post Communion Prayer.

At the following words concerning the bread, the

Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words

concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and

any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Christ has died.

Christ is risen.

Christ will come again.

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of

praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension,

we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and

Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in

him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament,

and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us

with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and

in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours,

Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy Name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,

for ever and ever. Amen.

Postlude

Komm, heiliger Geist, BWV 561 Johann Sebastian BachThe foregoing text of the worship service contained in this order of worship is taken from the Book of Common Prayer 1979.The Book of Common Prayer alone is of authority in the worship of the Episcopal Church. This program is provided for convenience of use on this occasion.

Komm, heiliger Geist is a Pentecost hymn text by Martin Luther which begins with an adaptation of the Pentecost Sequence Veni, Sancte Spiritus. One of two settings of this hymn found in Bach’s “Leipzig Chorales,” today’s prelude is an extroverted piece ideal for celebrating the Feast of Pentecost. Perpetual motion writing for the hands (perhaps depicting the Holy Spirit as rushing wind, as in today’s reading from Acts 2) presents never-ceasing excitement over a slow and fervent pedal line, which features the hymn melody.
