ONLINE HORTICULTURE CONTEST

Do you know what it takes to pick the best fruit and vegetables out at the grocery store? Or do you know what judges

are looking for when they judge your plants at the county fair? Have you ever wondered, what plant is that!?! We are

excited to offer the opportunity to learn these and other important horticulture skills through the Online Horticulture Con-

test. The contest will be available June 4-21, 2021 at: go.unl.edu/21onlinehortcontest.

Horticulture judging contest consists of three parts. The first is identification of plant material. Participants identify the

plants by common name from a plant list. Specimens may be alive or preserved plant parts like stems, twigs, leaves,

flowers, seeds, fruits, roots, bulbs, tubers, or plant products.

The second is a knowledge portion, usually in the form of a true/false or multiple choice quiz. Questions will test the con-

testant's knowledge of cultural practices for horticultural crops, plant science, pesticides, horticultural careers and other

topics related to the production, processing and consumption of horticultural crops.

The last portion is judging or placings. This is where four different plants, plates of vegetables, or containers flowers are

ranked from best to worst based on a set of criteria. Classes are judged on the basis of condition, quality, uniformity,

true-to-type, and size.

More details at: 4h.unl.edu/online-horticulture-judging-contest

More information about the Nebraska State contest can be found in the Fairbook

All Market Goats and Sheep must be weighed and tagged to be eligible for the County Fair Rate-of-Gain Contest. Plan to attend the Wayne County Weigh in on May 21 at the Wayne County Fairgrounds. Goats will be weighed beginning at 5:30 PM, sheep will begin at 6:00 PM. ROG ID’s due May 21. DNA samples can be pulled for State Fair.

Breeding Meat Goats, Breeding Sheep, Dairy Goats, Pygmy Goats, and market animals not participating in the Rate-of-Gain contest do not need to attend.

All goats being exhibited need to be individually identified with some form of USDA official Scrapie ID. Legible tattoo in the ear or tail may be used in place of a Scrapie tag for Dairy Goats. The tattoo will match registration papers if the goat is registered. Registration papers must be available at check-in. Any dairy goat not registered will need a Scrapie tag OR the family can tattoo the Scrapie tag numbers in the ear or tail if they do not want an ear tag.

All Sheep (breeding & market) must be tagged with a USDA Scrapies tag.

Completed ID sheets for those not in the Rate-of-Gain Contest are due by 5:00 p.m., June 15. Remember to mark RETURN on the ID sheet beside any breeding yearling that was exhibited in the breeding lamb class in 2020 to be eligible for increased premiums.

Cow/Calf Pairs - include ear tag number of calf as well as cow, age of cow, sex of calf, and birth date of calf. Reminder to 4-Hers 11 years of age and older: The calf must be also ID’d as either a breeding heifer or feeder calf. Reminder: Indicate if the pair is eligible for Renee Felt Herd Builder project. To be eligible for RHB, tag/tattoos must match previous year’s ID sheets.

Breeding Beef and Cow/Calf Pairs - indicate home raised, county raised and return animals on the ID form. A cow shown as a breeding heifer at the 2020 county fair is eligible for increased premiums if noted as return on the 2021 ID form. All other cows are ineligible for the increased premiums.

Bucket Calves and Feeder Calves need to be tagged with a 4-H ear tag. Tags can be purchased from the Extension Office. County tags are $1.00 each and EID tags are $3.00 each. EID tags are needed to exhibit a Feeder Calf at the State Fair. Tagging needs to be done prior to the ID deadline.

4-H Rabbits - ID on County ID form and 3 close range photos (left side, right side, front view) or tattoo. Rabbits

Horses—markings may be drawn in or photos may be used on ID sheets. If using photos, clear views of the face and both sides of the horse are needed. Horse Level testing for County Fair must be complete by June 15. This includes signed books (or sheets) along with any needed reports.

more about the Nebraska Extension 4-H Youth Development Program at 4h.unl.edu.” The tag line is included in the time limit.

All PSA’s must be the original work of the presenter. Contestants may not use the PSA’s provided by the state or national staff.

The PSA’s may be presented live at the contest or electronically. PSA’s may be recorded on a personal device or at a local radio station. Sound effects and public domain music may be used on recorded PSA’s. Copyrighted material may NOT be used.

No team PSA’s are allowed
