A Jesuit parish uniting hearts and minds in the Spirit of Jesus Christ

May 6, 2018

Pastor Steve Garnaas-Holmes, in his poem Joy, expresses it this way: You have sown seeds, planted goodness, labored for grace, often with pain, often wondering if it's worth it, if it will amount to anything,

wondering if you can keep it up. God comes into human flesh to tell you: “I am with you. I am beside you. I am here, in this world and its workings. The seed you have sown will bear fruit. You will come home to rest, home to belonging, singing songs of joy.

I recently read a book entitled The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World. It was a series of conversations between two of the world’s great spiritual leaders—Archbishop Desmond Tutu and His Holiness the Dalai Lama. In this book, the authors discuss the major obstacles to joy. They consider the major obstacles to joy are: (1) fear, stress, and anxiety; (2) frustration and anger; (3) sadness and grief; (4) despair; (5) loneliness; (6) envy; (7) suffering and adversity; and (8) illness and fear of death. Did you notice that “fear” is mentioned at least two times as an obstacle to joy? These two elderly spiritual mentors then discuss the Eight Pillars of Joy, which they identify as: (1) Acceptance, (2) Forgiveness, (3) Perspective, (4) Generosity, (5) Compassion, (6) Humility, (7) Humor, and (8) Gratitude.

Pope Francis reminds us, in The Joy of Discipleship, that joy should be one of the defining characteristics of any person who has truly encountered Jesus. Henri Nouwen, the Dutch Psychologist and Spiritual Director, once wrote about joy in his book Here and Now:

Joy is essential to the spiritual life. Whatever we may think of or say about God, when we are not joyful, our thoughts and words cannot bear fruit. Jesus re veals to us God's love so that his joy may become ours and that our joy may become complete. Joy is the experience of knowing that you are unconditionally loved and that nothing - sickness, failure, emotional distress, oppression, war, or even death - can take that love away.

Joy is not the same as happiness. We can be unhappy about many things, but joy can still be there because it comes from the knowledge of God's love for us... Joy does not simply happen to us. We have to choose joy and keep choosing it every day. It is a choice based on

the knowledge that we belong to God and have found in God our refuge and our safety and that nothing, not even death, can take God away from us.

On this Sixth Sunday of Easter, let us pray for the risen Christ’s gift of joy:

Compassionate God, you desire the fullness of life for us, abundant, overflowing. Unbind us, free us for joy, that we may be fully alive. You have held nothing back from us. Help us to hold nothing back in this life, to live it to the fullest, to drink deeply of joy – your joy which you desire to share with us forever.

Fr. Mike
