PARISH BUSINESS

Page 3

Everyday Stewardship

Nowadays I travel a good bit, which means I am away from my wife and children for periods of time, some short but some long. But what makes it easier for me, besides being able to share the good news of Jesus with people all over, is that I know I will not be gone forever. I will return and then all will be well again. I have been called by God to be away from them at times, but God always brings me back to them.

Each liturgical year we celebrate Jesus’ ascension into heaven. The feast speaks much to who Jesus is theological-ly, but in a very practical way, we also acknowledge that he has gone to be with the Father, but will return someday. Just as I return after a conference or visit with a parish to those God has entrusted to me and I love, Jesus will return to those entrusted to him and whom he loves.

But just like when I am away, there are things to be done. Life goes on for my wife and children with school, work, activities, and the basic responsibilities of family. In good stewardship, they are called to give generously to each other and devote themselves to God. Without them tending to things, upon my return I would find everything in turmoil and disarray. Then when I return, we become one again, and we are about the Lord's work together.

The Lord ascended into heaven but we are not to sit by quietly awaiting His return. Much needs to be done. He has entrusted much to us expecting us to be good stewards. If you think that you have all the time in the world to com-plete the tasks at hand, think again. His return will be when we least expect it. It is time to be about our Father's work.

Praying For Priests

If there was ever a need to pray and sacrifice for priests for their preservation and sanctity it is today. In the U.S. alone, since Vatican Council II, we have lost well over ten thousand priests and vocations have dropped almost seventy-five percent.

Praying for priests and bishops has been the practice of the Church since apostolic times. It is a matter of revealed truth. It is a divine mandate. We read in the Acts of the Apostles: “Peter therefore was kept in prison. But prayer was made without ceasing by the church unto God for him.”

Through prayer we gain graces for priests which other-wise they would not obtain. Priests need special graces because they have extraordinary responsibilities before God. Those who are responsible for Christ’s presence on earth are to be of all people, most Christ-like. They are to be patterns of what Christ wants all of us to be.

Each Monday at 7:00 #.". and on Thursday morning after the 8:15 !.". Mass (approximately 8:45) we pray for our ordained. St. Peregrine blessings are offered every Monday evening after Prayer for Priests.

St. Peregrine service will be celebrated the third Mon-day of the month, combined with Prayers for Priests at 7:00 #.". in the church. Please remember, we need our priests for Holy Mass, sacraments, and direction in the faith. Pray for them.

Thank you

Deacon Jim

Church Crying Room

People sometimes ask why our church doesn’t have a crying room. When the church was built, a decision was make not to include a crying room so as not to segregate families with babies and young children from the rest of the congregation at Mass.

When the church was renovated as part of Vision 2000, glass doors were added to the vestibule along with a better sound system to allow parents with a crying child to step out into the vestibule until the child was settled, yet still have a chance to see and hear the Mass. Having young children in the church with the parents allows families to be together during the liturgy and gives them the oppor-tunity to learn how to behave during Mass. We are blessed to have families with young children in our parish and we are happy that they come to Mass with their little ones. While babies may at times make themselves heard at Mass, they are a sign of the future of our Church and the blessing of new life that is such a tremendous gift from God Let us always be welcoming and patient with these youngest members of Visitation.

Rosary Devotion

The Rosary is prayed every day, Monday through Saturday, after the 8:15 !.". Mass in church. Please join us.

FAITH FORMATION

Faith Matt-ers

By Matt Pozen—Director of Parish Faith Formation

Page 5

Faithful Citizenship (May 8, 2016) Let’s continue our look at Part II of Faithful Citizenship. Last week we finished looking at issues under the heading of

“social justice”, so this week let’s move on to the final heading: “global solidarity”. Since the whole purpose of the bish-ops’ document, Faithful Citizenship, is to help Catholic voters to form and discern their conscience in preparation for an election, and since the November election is fast approaching, in the interest of completing our look at the document I will reduce my own commentary to a minimum.

Paragraph 90 sets out a comprehensive approach to issues of global solidarity: - “A more just world will likely be a more peaceful world, a world less vulnerable to terrorism and other violence. The

United States has the responsibility to take the lead in addressing the scandal of poverty and underdevelopment. Our nation should help to humanize globalization, addressing its negative consequences and spreading its benefits, espe-cially among the world’s poor. The United States also has a unique opportunity to use its power in partnership with oth-ers to build a more just and peaceful world.”

- “The United States should take a leading role in helping to alleviate global poverty through substantially increased development aid for the poorest countries, more equitable trade policies, and continuing efforts to relieve the crushing burdens of debt and disease.”

- “U.S. policy should promote religious liberty and other basic human rights.” - “Asylum should be afforded to refugees who hold a well-founded fear of persecution in their homelands. Our coun-

try should support protection for persons fleeing persecution through safe haven in other countries, including the United States, especially for unaccompanied children, women, victims of human trafficking, and religious minorities.”

- “Our country should be a leader—in collaboration with the international community—in addressing regional conflicts. Leadership on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is an especially urgent priority. The United States should actively pursue comprehensive negotiations leading to a just and peaceful resolution that respects the legitimate claims and aspira-tions of both Israelis and Palestinians, ensuring security for Israel, a viable state for Palestinians, respect for Lebanon’s sovereignty, and peace in the region.”

- “Defending human life, building peace, combating poverty and despair, and protecting freedom and human rights are not only moral imperatives—they are wise national priorities that will make our nation and world safer.”

In the light of our current debates over how to reduce our enormous national debt, many have argued for cutting the amount of money budgeted for foreign aid, which only accounts for about 1% of federal spending. The bishops have ar-gued just the opposite, that foreign aid should be a higher national priority, for not only are we called to solidarity with our fellow human beings all across the globe, but this is money well spent in creating a more just and peaceful world.

MINISTRIES

Love Conquers All “Whenever we are shaken by the sight of evil spreading

in the world…we should not forget that such unleashing of the forces of sin is overcome by the saving power of Christ. Whenever the words of consecration are uttered in the Mass and the Body and Blood of Christ become pre-sent in the act of the sacrifice, the triumph of love over ha-tred, of holiness over sin, is also present. Every Eucharis-tic Celebration is stronger than all the evil in the uni-verse; it means real, concrete accomplishment of the redemption.” (St. John Paul II)

Eucharistic Adoration is the natural extension of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The two go hand in hand. Re-ceive Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and then, on this Mothers’ Day, honor Mary, Mother of the Holy Eucharist by visiting her son, Jesus, in the Adoration Chapel.

Experience the “Triumph of the Two Hearts.”

The Chapel is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There is a serious need for adorers in two time slots: Sun-day, 12:00 noon to 1:00 #.".; and Saturday, 2:00-3:00 #.". For more information, call Joan Taylor 630-530-8963 or Mary Lewis 630-941-9173.

Visitation Mission Statement Visitation Parish, a Roman Catholic Community in the Diocese of Joliet-in-Illinois, seeks to draw all to Jesus Christ, revelation of the Father and font of the Holy Spirit, by celebrating the Sacraments, educating people of all ages in the Truths of the Catholic Faith, and reaching out to those who are physically, emotionally or spiritually in need.

New Parishioners, Welcome! Call or stop in the Rectory Office to register as a member of Visitation Parish.

Baptisms Most Sundays at 1:30 #.". Parents are required to take a Baptism Preparation Class beforehand. Classes are held every other month, so please plan ahead. Call the Rectory for information. Marriages Arrangements must be made at the Rectory at least six months in advance. Catholic parties must obtain a NEWLY issued certificate of their Baptism and then contact the Rectory before making any other

arrangements. Weddings scheduled at 12:00 or 2:00 #.". on Saturday. NO Sunday Weddings. Funerals It is the responsibility of the parish to bury their dead. The funeral director will contact the parish

regarding arrangements. No specific offering is required for the parish in connection with the funeral liturgy.
