Chairman’s Comments May is Small Business

Appreciation Month, and nobody appreciates small business like your Chamber does. Small business is how big business starts out. Small business is the most effective way to re-launch the economy and re-hire workers after a recession. 90% of Chamber Partners are small businesses. This month we honor and support our small business job creators, at the

same time we accelerate our pursuit of large manufacturing enterprises to our region. These efforts go hand-in-hand. For every 100 new manufacturing jobs we recruit to our region (or retain by providing sufficient talent and trained workers), over $240,000 of sales are generated for restaurants; nearly $200,000 gets generated to buy home furnishings and clothing. At the same time, we recognize small business people are extremely busy, sometimes too busy to come out to Chamber coffee hours like the one May 31, sponsored by Stewart-Richey Construction, or even the Business After Hours on May 21, sponsored by Van Meter Insurance. That’s why the Chamber is introducing new benefits that our Partners can use to promote their business and boost sales without leaving the shop. Look for more online tools, such as SizeUp, that we rolled-out last month. And no matter how busy you are Mr. and Mrs. Small Business, you won’t want to miss getting a spot in our annual Welcome Back Western extravaganza. With 21,000 WKU students returning every fall, Welcome Back Western is an outstanding promotional opportunity for almost any small business to boost sales. Finally, speaking of young people, our Capital Campaign for The Leader in Me has reached over 70% of our $1.6 million goal. Starting this month, you’ll be getting invitations from your friends and friends-of-friends to attend casual get-togethers to support this incredibly successful investment in our schools. I urge you to say, “yes” when invited and learn more about our strategic investment in public education that benefits us all, but especially our future workforce and our future small business owners.

A Birmingham, Alabama native, Rutledge Wood learned the art of restoration at a young age. His father taught him about buying, restoring and selling new and old vehicles, and Rutledge has used that knowledge to create a very successful ca-reer. His first on-air appearance was on NAS-CAR Live on the SPEED Channel, which led to his first hosting gig on SPEED Road Tour Challenge. Next came hosting Trackside Live, being a roving reporter for NASCAR RaceDay fueled by Sunoco, and being part of NASCAR Smarts. This is Rutledge’s eighth year with SPEED and NASCAR.

Rutledge’s innate knowledge of cars, gregarious personality and passion for people land-ed him a role as co-host of Top Gear on the History Channel. The show is in its fourth season of delving deep into the history of the automobile, celebrating the art of driving with super-cars and extreme stunts, reviewing cars and conducting ce-lebrity interviews. Rutledge currently resides in Georgia and loves spending time with his girls -- his wife Rachel and his two beautiful daughters.

McNeill ElementaryThe percentage of disciplinary referrals has gone down approximately 65-70%. Two years ago I had a 2-inch binder full of referrals, but after implementation of The Leader in Me, I have a folder with only a handful of referrals. The Leader in me process allows students to take responsibility for their own actions!

Marsha Ingram, Principal, Bowling Green School

Rich Pond Elementary *** was the one student that I thought of immediately. He has come so far this school year. He stated himself at the beginning of the year, that he had to work harder at this school than he had been required to do at his previous school. He was constantly on the radar as he was not turning in work, completing work in class, and spent time in the ABC room just to catch up. He had even had a special education referral started on him. ***was given the job of helping direct students arriving late on Friday mornings for morning meeting. It became apparent that he took that job very seriously. Week after week, I would watch him and notice subtle changes in his overall behavior at school. Now he gets off the bus and greets me first with a chipper “good morning, Mrs. Clardy”. The ladies in the office also notice the change in his personality. They speak of him on a regular basis as he is charming and witty in his encounters with him. He is turning in work more often than not and it has been many weeks/months since he has spent time in the ABC room.

Anna Clardy, Teacher

Cumberland Trace ElementaryDuring the 2010-2011 school year, one of our students had severe behavior problems and a large number of discipline referrals. He spent the last quarter of school on a Level System being assigned to in-school

suspension and he spent the last 20 minutes of the day sitting in our school secretary’s office while she called for buses because he could not behave with his peers. Last summer our secretary participated in The Leader in Me training. Upon completing training, she returned with the perfect leadership job for this student - Bus Caller. He has been doing this job all year and has only had 3 office referrals. His behavior and his grades have improved significantly. His classmates and others in the school give him lots of positive attention and respect because he

does this job so well!Mary Evans, Principal

North Warren ElementaryAs students begin to use the 7 Habits at school, they also bring it back to their homes, engaging their parents, guardians and siblings. Then its impact carries over into the current workforce, benefiting the business community. These benefits continue to grow as students complete their educations and enter the workforce with skills such accountability, responsibility, creativity and effective communication. “I first noticed a few of the habits when my son was coming home and making comments like ‘win-win,’ and being ‘pro-active.’ Not only did he say them to me, but he could explain what they meant. This is when I got the buy-in.

Incorporating these habits is exactly what I feel every school should be doing. I encourage every parent and business professional to read and implement these habits to have an actively engaged school and community to assist in the leadership of our children”

Candace Elkin, Parent

Briarwood Elementary SchoolOur school started with a staff-wide book study of The Leader in Me, which was a key factor in getting everyone’s buy-in. Once we had the teachers’ buy-in we fully implemented the process with our students and were able to see signs of responsibility form the beginning. Our students now apply for jobs within their classroom and the entire school. They lead morning meetings, greet our visitors and even have lunch with Bowling Green community leaders. These things would never have happened in the past.

2013 STRATEGIC INITIATIVE: Expand entrepreneurship and small business prosperity

CHaMBER SELECTS 2013 SMaLL BUSINESS PERSON OF THE yEaR: David Holland

At a Chamber news conference April 23, David Holland was awarded one of the Chamber’s most important recognitions, the Small Business Person of the Year. Holland, who started Signature Signs & Ad Specialties in 1995 after a 19-year career with Thomas Printing, also owns and operates Suitable for Framing. Between the two establishments, Holland employs 15 people and participates in his family’s real estate holding company. Holland’s wife, Karen and their four children were kept hidden by Doug Gorman-- who had

nominated Holland-- until the announcement was made at Chamber headquarters. Besides creating jobs, Holland is perhaps best known for bringing the Kiwanis Club’s Soap Box Derby race back to Bowling Green and helping to make it the third-largest soap box race in the world. Over 1,500 young people have participated in the derby over the years, and through Holland’s efforts, the Commonwealth donated property to Warren County to establish the permanent Soap Box Derby track at Phil Moore Park.

Thank you for Renewing Your Chamber Investment...

The Chamber is in the planning stages for this year’s Washington D.C. Fly-In Event where Partners meet with Kentucky Senators and Representatives and hear about the business before Congress that affects our businesses. Our goal is to make this year’s event our best ever. But to do that, we need your input!

Jot down your answers to these very few questions in a quick email to [email protected]:

1) Do you prefer to arrange your own travel, or take the package?2) When is the best time of year for you to go to Washington?3) If your Chamber partnered with another Kentucky community Chamber,

would that affect your interest in participating?4) Does your organization visit Washington DC for a similar event?5) Are you interested in going on the 2013 DC Fly-In if it takes place in October?6) Any other thoughts or issues you would like to raise regarding the Chamber’s

DC Fly-In program.

Small Business Spotlight

Overhead Door Company of Bowling GreenOverhead Door Company of Bowling Green has been a leading provider of garage doors and related equipment for over 58 years. Locally owned and operated, President Jana Bo-swell takes pride in providing excel-lent customer service to customers throughout Kentucky and five other states from their showroom at 2717 Nashville Road in Bowling Green.

Because Overhead Door is one of the most-recognized and well-respected brands in the garage door industry, Boswell says living up to the standard takes real commitment to customers and attention to detail. “We are the leading provider of both residential and commercial Overhead and ga-rage door systems, electric operators, loading dock systems, and specialty door products. We continue to lead the way with innovative solutions and unmatched professional installation, service, and support that keeps customers coming back.”

Boswell’s operation includes 17 vehicles and over 25 employ-ees, including professionally -trained service technicians who make customer satisfaction their top priority. “We don’t use subcontract labor. We stand behind our work,” she notes.

Boswell began working at Overhead Door as a teenager in

bookkeeping and sales. She became a partner early-on, buying into the business as she worked. By the time she turned 21 in 1987, she was able to purchase the other owner’s shares and became the sole proprietor. By 2001, Overhead Door Company of Bowling Green had been recognized in national publications as one of the top 75 door dealers in the world, and one of the top Overhead Door dealer operations in the U.S.

In addition to sponsoring the Chamber’s May golf tournament, Bo-swell says that Overhead Door has also supported state and local per-forming arts communities, and many local charitable organizations and
